Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) layered materials have attracted great attention due to their unique electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. 2D layered materials have unique van der Waals gaps, thus the foreign substance, such as atoms, molecules and ions, can be inserted into the gaps to change the physical and chemical properties of 2D layered materials, which is conducive to realize their multi-functional application. Herein, we present a critical review of recent research progress of 2D intercalated materials, including the synthesizing methods, theoretical calculation, characterization and multifunctional application. Finally, we will summarize the current challenges and future opportunities in the development of 2D intercalated materials.

Abstract:Owing to unique structures and properties, 2D layered materials have exhibited great potentials for energy-related applications. Among these, 2D Bi-based layered materials which possess intriguing characteristics for energy conversion and storage systems have attracted tremendous attention. In this review, the structural and electronic properties of 2D Bi-based layered materials classified into four categories (unitary, binary, ternary and multinary) are introduced. Their promising applications in energy conversion and storage are reviewed in details, with particular emphasis on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, solar cells, thermoelectrics, optoelectronics and rechargeable batteries. Finally, based on current research progress, future perspectives for exploring and developing advanced 2D Bi-based layered energy conversion and storage materials are presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D)functional materials(2DFMs)are ma-terials with 2D features and fascinating physical properties for various applications.The large diameter-length ratio gives them unprecedented property compared to their bulky states.A free surface state,unsaturated active site,flexible light-matter inter-action and the strong quantum Hall effect make 2DFMs optimal for many emerging issues.Over the past two decades,tremen-dous work has been done on the synthesis,characterization and application of 2DFMs.Among this research,seminal work ap-peared in 2004.In a typical experiment,Geim and Novoselov ex-foliated monolayer graphene from bulky graphite,which greatly boosted the enthusiasm for research into 2DFMs[1].Since then,this subject has become a central issue in physical science and will continue to be a bustling topic in the future.Materi-als with 2D layered structures,such as hexagonal-boron nitride(h-BN),MoS2,metal halides,MXenes,MOFs and COFs,have been synthesized and investigated in a series of domains.These fields cover efficient photonics,gas sensing and separation,an-tiviral protection and detection,energy conversion and storage,and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The celebrated discovery of graphene has spurred tremendous research interest in two‐dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) with unique attributes in the quantum regime. In 2DLMs, each layer is composed of a covalently bonded lattice and is weakly coupled to its neighboring layers by van der Waals interactions. There are abundant members in this 2DLM family beyond graphene, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (MX2, M = Mo, W; X = S, Se, Te), semimetal chalcogenide (InSe), black phosphorus, etc. The 2DLMs afford rich and ideal material platforms for studying quantum effects and their corresponding applications in the two‐dimensional (2D) limit. In this review, the emerging quantum effects in 2DLMs are examined with particular focus on their band structure evolvement, valleytronics, and quantum Hall/quantum spin Hall effects. Based on the summary of quantum effects discovered in 2DLMs, the future research directions and prospective applications are also discussed. This review summarizes the emerging quantum effects in two‐dimensional (2D) materials, which are caused by quantum behaviors of the 2D electrons from three main perspectives including the evolution of electronic band structure, electronic polarization, and electronic transport. Thereby, the electronic band evolvement, valleytronics, quantum Hall/quantum spin Hall effects, along with prospective applications and future directions are introduced in succession.

Abstract:<p>2D layered materials typically feature strong in‐plane covalent chemical bonding within each atomic layer and weak out‐of‐plane van der Waals (vdW) interactions between adjacent layers. The non‐bonding nature between neighboring layers naturally results in a vdW gap, in which various foreign species may be inserted without breaking the in‐plane covalent bonds. By tailoring the composition, size, structure, and electronic properties of the intercalated guest species and the hosting layered materials, an expansive family of layered intercalation materials may be produced with highly variable compositional and structural features as well as widely tunable physical/chemical properties, invoking unprecedented opportunities in fundamental studies of property modulation and potential applications in diverse technologies, including electronics, optics, superconductors, thermoelectrics, catalysis, and energy storage. Here, the principles and protocols for various intercalation methods, including wet chemical intercalation, gas‐phase intercalation, electrochemical intercalation, and ion‐exchange intercalation, are comprehensively reviewed and how the intercalated species alter the crystal structure and the interlayer coupling of the host 2D layered materials, introducing unusual physical and chemical properties and enabling devices with superior performance or unique functions, is discussed. To conclude, a brief summary on future research opportunities and emerging challenges in the layered intercalation materials is given.</p>

Abstract:Intercalation in few‐layer (2D) materials is a rapidly growing area of research to develop next‐generation energy‐storage and optoelectronic devices, including batteries, sensors, transistors, and electrically tunable displays. Identifying fundamental differences between intercalation in bulk and 2D materials will play a key role in developing functional devices. Herein, advances in few‐layer intercalation are addressed in the historical context of bulk intercalation. First, synthesis methods and structural properties are discussed, emphasizing electrochemical techniques, the mechanism of intercalation, and the formation of a solid‐electrolyte interphase. To address fundamental differences between bulk and 2D materials, scaling relationships describe how intercalation kinetics, structure, and electronic and optical properties depend on material thickness and lateral dimension. Here, diffusion rates, pseudocapacity, limits of staging, and electronic structure are compared for bulk and 2D materials. Next, the optoelectronic properties are summarized, focusing on charge transfer, conductivity, and electronic structure. For energy devices, opportunities also emerge to design van der Waals heterostructures with high capacities and excellent cycling performance. Initial studies of heterostructured electrodes are compared to state‐of‐the‐art battery materials. Finally, challenges and opportunities are presented for 2D materials in energy and optoelectronic applications, along with promising research directions in synthesis and characterization to engineer 2D materials for superior devices.

Abstract:Engineering the properties of materials is of central importance in modern science and technology. In conventional bulk materials, the property changes are realized mainly through modifying the chemical bonds and crystalline structures, or introducing dopant atoms. Recent studies in van der Waals coupled 2D layered materials have demonstrated a different way of materials engineering through modifying interlayer interactions at the material interfaces, because the interlayer interactions in these materials can be easily controlled by changing interlayer stacking configurations and/or applying external fields. In this review, recent progresses in exploring the effects of van der Waals interlayer interactions on graphene, including the discovery of van Hove singularities, Fermi velocity renormalization, and Hofstadter's butterfly pattern, are discussed. Interlayer interactions at other 2D layered material interfaces, such as transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus, are also discussed. Finally, the prospects of using the van der Waals coupled 2D layered materials for next‐generation electronics and optoelectronics are presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN), and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs, e.g., MoS2) have attracted considerable attention in the past few years because of their novel properties and versatile potential applications. These 2D layers can be integrated into a monolayer (lateral 2D heterostructure) or a multilayer stack (vertical 2D heterostructure). The resulting artificial 2D structures provide access to new properties and applications beyond their component 2D atomic crystals and hence, they are emerging as a new exciting field of research. In this article, we review recent progress on the fabrication, characterization, and applications of various 2D heterostructures.

Abstract:The intercalation of layered materials offers a flexible approach for tailoring their structures and generating unexpected properties. In this review, we provide perspectives on the chemical intercalation of layered materials, including graphite/graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and some particular materials. The characteristics of the different intercalation methods and their chemical mechanisms are discussed. The influence of intercalation on the structural changes of the host materials and the structural change how to affect the intrinsic properties of the intercalation compounds are discussed. Furthermore, we provide a perspective on the applications of intercalation compounds in fields such as energy conversion and storage, catalysis, smart devices, biomedical applications, and environmental remediation. Abstract:With the increasing interest in nanodevices based on two-dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) after the birth of graphene, the mechanical and coupling properties of these materials, which play an important role in determining the performance and life of nanodevices, have drawn increasingly more attention. In this review, both experimental and simulation methods investigating the mechanical properties and behaviour of 2DLMs have been summarized, which is followed by the discussion of their elastic properties and failure mechanisms. For further understanding and tuning of their mechanical properties and behaviour, the influence factors on the mechanical properties and behaviour have been taken into consideration. In addition, the coupling properties between mechanical properties and other physical properties are summarized to help set up the theoretical blocks for their novel applications. Thus, the understanding of the mechanical and coupling properties paves the way to their applications in flexible electronics and novel electronics, which is demonstrated in the last part. This review is expected to provide in-depth and comprehensive understanding of mechanical and coupling properties of 2DLMs as well as direct guidance for obtaining satisfactory nanodevices from the aspects of material selection, fabrication processes and device design.

Abstract:Intercalation of atoms, ions and molecules is a powerful tool for altering or tuning the properties — interlayer interactions, in-plane bonding configurations, Fermi-level energies, electronic band structures and spin–orbit coupling — of 2D materials. Intercalation can induce property changes in materials related to photonics, electronics, optoelectronics, thermoelectricity, magnetism, catalysis and energy storage, unlocking or improving the potential of 2D materials in present and future applications. In situ imaging and spectroscopy technologies are used to visualize and trace intercalation processes. These techniques provide the opportunity for deciphering important and often elusive intercalation dynamics, chemomechanics and mechanisms, such as the intercalation pathways, reversibility, uniformity and speed. In this Review, we discuss intercalation in 2D materials, beginning with a brief introduction of the intercalation strategies, then we look into the atomic and intrinsic effects of intercalation, followed by an overview of their in situ studies, and finally provide our outlook.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) graphene-like layered semiconductors provide a new platform for materials research because of their unique mechanical, electronic and optical attributes. Their in-plane covalent bonding and dangling-bond-free surface allow them to assemble various van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHSs) with sharply atomic interfaces that are not limited by lattice matching and material compatibility. Interlayer coupling, as a ubiquitous phenomenon residing among 2D materials (2DMs) systems, controls a thin layer exfoliation process and the assembly of vdWHSs and behaves with a unique degree of freedom for engineering the properties of 2DMs. Interlayer coupling provides an opportunity to observe new physics and provides a novel strategy to modulate the electronic and optoelectronic properties of materials for practical device applications. We herein review recent progress in the exploration of interlayer coupling in 2D semiconducting vdWHSs for potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Among 108423 unique, experimentally known 3D compounds, there exist 1825 ones that are either easily or potentially exfoliable. This increasingly broad library of 2D layered materials(2DLMs) with variable physical properties as well as the unique ability to vertical stacking or lateral stitching 2DLMs into complex heterostructures enables a new dimension for materials engineering and device design, offering novel functional electronics and optoelectronics for flexible industry. In this review, we present a comprehensive summary of the state-of-the-art scalable fabrication technologies, the unique properties as well as the potential device applications of the emerging 2D hetero-structures. Firstly, we depict an overall picture of the 2D vertical van der Waals heterostructures. Secondly, we focus on the 2D lateral heterostructures by CVD technique. For a quick access and full coverage, both the vertical and lateral 2D heterostructures are classified into several types according to their chemical compounds with different dimensions. In the end, both the challenges and potential applications of these 2D heterostructures are discussed.

Abstract:The rise of two-dimensional (2D) materials research took place following the isolation of graphene in 2004. These new 2D materials include transition metal dichalcogenides, mono-elemental 2D sheets, and several carbide- and nitride-based materials. The number of publications related to these emerging materials has been drastically increasing over the last five years. Thus, through this comprehensive review, we aim to discuss the most recent groundbreaking discoveries as well as emerging opportunities and remaining challenges. This review starts out by delving into the improved methods of producing these new 2D materials via controlled exfoliation, metal organic chemical vapor deposition, and wet chemical means. We look into recent studies of doping as well as the optical properties of 2D materials and their heterostructures. Recent advances towards applications of these materials in 2D electronics are also reviewed, and include the tunnel MOSFET and ways to reduce the contact resistance for fabricating high-quality devices. Finally, several unique and innovative applications recently explored are discussed as well as perspectives of this exciting and fast moving field.

Abstract:After the discovery of graphene in 2004, the field of atomically thin crystals has exploded with the discovery of thousands of 2-dimensional materials (2DMs) with unique electronic and optical properties, by making them very attractive for a broad range of applications, from electronics to energy storage and harvesting, and from sensing to biomedical applications. In order to integrate 2DMs into practical applications, it is crucial to develop mass scalable techniques providing crystals of high quality and in large yield. Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the most promising methods for producing 2DMs, as it enables quick and large-scale production of solution processable nanosheets with a thickness well below 10 layers and lateral size above 1 μm. Originally, this technique was developed for the production of graphene; however, in the last few years, this approach has been successfully extended to other 2DMs, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorous, hexagonal boron nitride, MXenes and many other emerging 2D materials. This review first provides an introduction to the fundamentals of electrochemical exfoliation and then it discusses the production of each class of 2DMs, by introducing their properties and giving examples of applications. Finally, a summary and perspective are given to address some of the challenges in this research area.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide powerful platforms for exploring fascinating physical phenomena and implementing intriguing applications. The recent discovery of 2D magnetic materials opens up many exciting topics in the research of 2D materials. 2D magnetic materials not only exhibit diverse properties on their own, which can be effectively controlled via external stimuli, but also can serve as a part of vdW heterostructures, creating a variety of unprecedented properties and functionalities. The field of 2D magnetism has grown rapidly in the past few years. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the emergent phenomena in this active field. We review the well-established understanding of typical 2D magnetic materials and the vdW heterostructures and introduce the manipulations of their magnetic properties. In addition, we discuss the interplay between magnetism and topology in some recently discovered 2D materials. Moreover, we also address the valley relevant physics and the topological spin textures in 2D magnetic materials. Finally, we highlight some future interests in this promising field.
