Abstract:Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multibody Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degree of freedom in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.

Abstract:Applying a unified approach, we study the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the Hofstadter model with short range interactions between fermions. An effective field, that takes into account the interaction between fermions, is determined by both amplitude and phase. Its amplitude is proportional to the interaction strength, the phase corresponds to the minimum energy. In fact, the problem is reduced to the Harper equation with two different scales: the first is a magnetic scale with the cell size corresponding to a unit quantum magnetic flux, the second scale determines the inhomogeneity of the effective field, forms the steady fine structure of the Hofstadter spectrum and leads to the realization of fractional quantum Hall states. In a sample of finite size with open boundary conditions, the fine structure of the Hofstadter spectrum consists of the Dirac branches of the fermion excitations and includes the fine structure of the edge chiral modes. The Chern numbers of the topological Hofstadter bands are conserved during the formation of their fine structure. The edge modes are formed into the Hofstadter bands. They connect the nearest-neighbor subbands and determine the conductance for the fractional filling.

Quantum Hall Effects in Fast-Rotating Fermi Gases with Anisotropic Dipolar Interaction

Abstract:We investigate fast rotating quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gases in the quantum Hall regime. By tuning the direction of the dipole moments with respect to the z axis, the dipole-dipole interaction becomes anisotropic in the x-y plane. For a soft confining potential we find that, as we tilt the angle of the dipole moments, the system evolves from v = 1/3 Laughlin state with dipoles being polarized along the z axis to a series of ground states characterized by distinct mean total angular momentum, and finally to an anisotropic integer quantum Hall state. During the transition from the fractional regime to the integer regime, we find that the density profile of the system exhibits crystal-like structures. We map out the ground states as a function of the tilt angle and the confining potential, revealing the competition of the isotropic confining potential and both the isotropic and anisotropic components of the dipole-dipole interaction.

Abstract:The quantum Hall effect (QHE) is studied in the context of a conformal field theory (CFT). Winding state vertex operators for an effective field of N "spins" associated with the cyclotron motion of particles are defined. The effective field of spins may be used to define an effective Hamiltonian. This effective Hamiltonian describes the collective motion of the N particles (with coupling κ0) together with a current-current interaction (of strength κ1). Such a system gives rise to a CFT in the large-N limit when κ0=κ1. The Laughlin wave function is derived from this CFT as an N'-point correlation function of winding state vertex operators.
Anisotropy and Quench Dynamics of Quasiholes in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Abstract:We present a microscopic study of quasiholes in bosonic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids at filling factor ν = 1/2 in the lowest Landau level with anisotropic band mass tensors. We use the spatial density profile to characterize the shape of a quasihole and analyze its anisotropy. We then compare the quasihole’s anisotropy with the intrinsic geometric metric of the system that is extracted from the maximal overlap between the numerically obtained quasihole ground state and a set of model wave functions of anisotropic quasiholes. For a static system, we find the quasihole’s anisotropy, similar to the intrinsic metric, grows with the anisotropy of the band mass tensor. When the quasihole develops well, we observe a correspondence between the anisotropy of the quasihole and the intrinsic metric of the underlying anisotropic FQH state. We also drive the system out of equilibrium by suddenly changing the band mass tensor. In this case, the shape of the quasihole evolves with time and shows similar dynamics with the intrinsic metric of the post-quench state. The evolving frequency matches the energy of a spin-2 quadrupole degree of freedom in the system. Our results suggest that the density profile of a quasihole is a useful tool to estimate the intrinsic metric and capture the dynamics of an FQH system.

Abstract:Quite generally, an insulator is theoretically defined by a vanishing conductivity tensor at the absolute zero of temperature. In classical insulators, such as band insulators, vanishing conductivities lead to diverging resistivities. In other insulators, in particular when a high magnetic field (B) is added, it is possible that while the magneto-resistance diverges, the Hall resistance remains finite, which is known as a Hall insulator. In this letter we demonstrate experimentally the existence of another, more exotic, insulator. This insulator, which terminates the quantum Hall effect series in a two-dimensional electron system, is characterized by a Hall resistance which is approximately quantized in the quantum unit of resistance h/e^2. This insulator is termed a quantized Hall insulator. In addition we show that for the same sample, the insulating state preceding the QHE series, at low-B, is of the HI kind.

Abstract:Based on Haldane's spherical geometrical formalism of the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids, the relation between the noncommutative geometry of S2 and the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluids is exhibited. A finite matrix model on the two-sphere is explicitly constucted as an effective description of the fractional quantum Hall fluids of finite extent, and the complete sets of physical quantum states of this matrix model are determined. We also describe how the low-lying excitations in the model are constructed in terms of the quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations. It is shown that there exists a Haldane hierarchical structure in the two-dimensional quantum Hall fluid states of the matrix model. These hierarchical fluid states are generated by the parent fluid state by condensing the quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations level by level.
Edge-mode Velocities and Thermal Coherence of Quantum Hall Interferometers

Abstract:We present comprehensive results on the edge-mode velocities in a quantum Hall droplet with realistic interaction and confinement at various filling fractions. We demonstrate that the charge-mode velocity scales roughly with the valence Landau level filling fraction and the Coulomb energy in the corresponding Landau level. At Landau level filling fraction nu = 5/2, the stark difference between the bosonic charge-mode velocity and the fermionic neutral-mode velocity can manifest itself in the thermal smearing of the non-Abelian quasiparticle interference. We estimate the dependence of the coherence temperature on the confining potential strength, which may be tunable experimentally to enhance the non-Abelian state.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive numerical study of a microscopic model of the fractional quantum Hall system at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=5∕2$, based on the disk geometry. Our model includes Coulomb interaction and a semirealistic confining potential. We also mix in a three-body interaction in some cases to help elucidate the physics. We obtain a phase diagram, discuss the conditions under which the ground state can be described by the Moore-Read state, and study its competition with neighboring stripe phases. We also study quasihole excitations and edge excitations in the Moore-Read-like state. From the evolution of the edge spectrum, we obtain the velocities of the charge and neutral edge modes, which turn out to be very different. This separation of velocities is a source of decoherence for a non-Abelian quasihole and/or quasiparticle (with charge $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}e∕4$) when propagating at the edge; using numbers obtained from a specific set of parameters, we estimate the decoherence length to be around $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. This sets an upper bound for the separation of the two point contacts in a double point-contact interferometer, designed to detect the non-Abelian nature of such quasiparticles. We also find a state that is a potential candidate for the recently proposed anti-Pfaffian state. We find the speculated anti-Pfaffian state is favored in weak confinement (smooth edge), while the Moore-Read Pfaffian state is favored in strong confinement (sharp edge).
THE QUANTIZED HALL INSULATOR: A "QUANTUM" SIGNATURE OF A "CLASSICAL" TRANSPORT REGIME?

Abstract:Experimental studies of the transitions from a primary quantum Hall (QH) liquid at filling factor ν=1/k (with k an odd integer) to the insulator have indicated a "quantized Hall insulator" (QHI) behavior: while the longitudinal resistivity diverges with decreasing temperature and current bias, the Hall resistivity remains quantized at the value kh/e 2 . We review the experimental results and the theoretical studies addressing this phenomenon. In particular, we discuss a theoretical approach which employs a model of the insulator as a random network of weakly coupled puddles of QH liquid at fixed ν. This model is proved to exhibit a robust quantization of the Hall resistivity, provided the electron transport on the network is incoherent. Subsequent theoretical studies have focused on the controversy whether the assumption of incoherence is necessary. The emergent conclusion is that in the quantum coherent transport regime, quantum interference destroys the QHI as a consequence of localization. Once the localization length becomes much shorter than the dephasing length, the Hall resistivity diverges. We conclude by mentioning some recent experimental observations and open questions.

Abstract:We perform an exact-diagonalization study of quasihole excitations for the two-component Halperin (221) state in the lowest Landau level and for several v = 1/3 bosonic fractional Chern insulators in topological flat bands with Chern number vertical bar C vertical bar=2. Properties including the quasihole size, charge, and braiding statistics are evaluated. For the Halperin (221) model state, we observe isotropic quasiholes with a clear internal structure, and obtain the quasihole charge and statistics matching the theoretical values. Interestingly, we also extract the same quasihole size, charge, and braiding statistics for the continuum model states of vertical bar C vertical bar=2 fractional Chern insulators, although the latter possess a "color-entangled" nature that does not exist in ordinary two-component Halperin states. We also consider two real lattice models with a band having vertical bar C vertical bar=2. There we find that a quasihole can exhibit much stronger oscillations of the density profile, while having the same charge and statistics as those in the continuum models.

Abstract:The importance of discreteness of electron charge for mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. A quantization of the circuit in accord with the discreteness of electric charges is proposed, and a Schrödinger equation in ‘charge representation’ is obtained. The Schrödinger equation is turned to be Mathieu equation in ‘current representation’, the wavefunction and energy spectrum can be solved exactly. The WKB solutions of the energy levels for the ground state and the excited states are given.

Abstract:In order to obtain a local description of the short distance physics of fractionally quantized Hall states for realistic (e.g. Coulomb) interactions, I propose to view the zeros of the ground state wave function, as seen by an individual test electron from far away, as particles. I then present evidence in support of this interpretation, and argue that the electron effectively decomposes into quark-like constituent particles of fractional charge.

A Calogero model for the non-Abelian quantum Hall effect

Abstract:A model of the non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall effect is obtained from the diagonalization of the matrix model proposed by Dorey, Tong, and Turner (DTT). The Hamiltonian is reminiscent of a spin Calogero-Moser model but involves higher-order symmetric representations of the non-Abelian symmetry. We derive the energy spectrum and show that the Hamiltonian has a triangular action on a certain class of wave functions with a free fermion expression. We deduce the expression of the ground states eigenfunctions and show that they solve a Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. Finally, we discuss the emergence of Kac-Moody symmetries in the large $N$ limit using the level-rank duality and confirm the results obtained previously by DTT.

Abstract:The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) occurs at certain magnetic field strengths B*(n) in a two-dimensional electron gas of density n at strong magnetic fields perpendicular to the plane of the electron gas. At these magnetic fields strengths, the system is incompressible, i.e., there is a finite cost in energy for creating charge density fluctuations in the bulk, while the boundary of the electron gas has gapless modes of density waves. The bulk energy gap arises because of the strong electron-electron interactions. While there are very good models for infinite homogeneous systems and for the gapless excitations of the boundary of the electron gas, computational methods to accurately model finite, inhomogeneous systems with more then about ten electrons have not been available until very recently. We will here review an ensemble density functional approach to studying the ground state of large inhomogeneous spin polarized FQHE systems.

Abstract:In recent breakthrough experiments, twisted moiré layers of transition metal dichalcogenides are found to manifest both integer (IQAHE) and fractional (FQAHE) quantum anomalous Hall effects in zero applied magnetic field because of the underlying flat band topology and spontaneous breaking of the time reversal invariance. In the current work, we critically analyze the experimental values of the quantized conductance in each case to emphasize the role of disorder in the problem, pointing out that obtaining accurate quantized conductance in future experiments would necessitate better contacts and lower disorder.

Universal Modelling of Oscillations in Fractional Quantum Hall Fluids

Abstract:Density oscillations in quantum fluids can reveal their fundamental characteristic features. In this work, we study the density oscillation of incompressible fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids created by flux insertion. For the model Laughlin state, we find that the complex oscillations seen in various density profiles in real space can be universally captured by a simple damped oscillator model in the occupation-number space. It requires only two independent fitting parameters or characteristic length scales: the decay length and the oscillation wave number. Realistic Coulomb quasiholes can be viewed as Laughlin quasiholes dressed by magnetorotons, which can be modeled by a generalized damped oscillator model. Our work reveals the fundamental connections between the oscillations seen in various aspects of FQH fluids such as in the density of quasiholes, edge, and the pair correlation function. The presented model is useful for the study of quasihole sizes for their control and braiding in experiments and large-scale numerical computation of variational energies.

Abstract:We exploit the analogy with the quantum Hall (QH) effect for electrons to study the possible atomic QH states of a rapidly-rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. Actually, there is a nearly perfect map of the present problem in the QH regime to the QH physics for electrons. The profound map enables one to give a physically appealing definitions of the filling fraction and the "atomic Hall conductance" that is quantized for atomic Laughlin states. This quantization might imply an exotic fractionalization of atomic mass. We also briefly discuss an effective Chern-Simons theory for describing the atomic QH liquids where a gravitational-like field naturally emerges.

Abstract:The quantum Hall effect is studied in a spherical geometry using the Dirac operator for non-interacting fermions in a background magnetic field, which is supplied by a Wu-Yang magnetic monopole at the centre of the sphere. Wave functions are cross-section of a non-trivial $U(1)$ bundle, the zero point energy then vanishes and no perturbations can lower the energy. The Atiyah-Singer index theorem constrains the degeneracy of the ground state. The fractional quantum Hall effect is also studied in the composite Fermion model. Vortices of the statistical gauge field are supplied by Dirac strings associated with the monopole field. A unique ground state is attained only if the vortices have an even number of flux units and act to counteract the background field, reducing the effective field seen by the composite fermions. There is a unique gapped ground state and, for large particle numbers, fractions $\nu=\frac{1}{2 k+1}$ are recovered.
