Abstract:Permeability is a nonlinear and non-local function of the intimate coupling between pore fluid flow and solid deformation in porous media. A class of related problems involves the effect of fluid injection or withdrawal on the transport properties of geomaterials. This paper presents an analytical solution for the nonlinear and non-local problem of fluid flow through a disk-shaped porous elastic inclusion below the free surface of an elastic half-space. The solution accounts for the following nonlinear mechanisms: (i) variations in the permeability coefficient due to the flow-induced deformation of the inclusion; (ii) the inertial losses of the pore fluid flow. The former and latter mechanisms are formulated using the Green's function for a dilatation centre in an elastic half-space and the Darcy–Forchheimer equation for fluid flow through porous media, respectively. An analytical perturbation solution to the considered problem is developed and validated against the numerical finite element solution to the same problem. The described nonlinear mechanisms are represented by two dimensionless parameter groups. The extreme values of these dimensionless groups govern the solution asymptotic behaviours mimicking the special-case solutions in which either mechanism is forced to vanish. The applied aspects of the solution are demonstrated through the wellbore performance index parameter that quantifies the subsurface rock ability to deliver the pore fluid toward or away from a wellbore in a porous reservoir. Unlike the linear models, the presented nonlinear solution captures the observed dependence of the performance index on the wellbore flow rate.

Abstract:The work investigates a model that combines a convection-diffusion-reaction equation for solute concentration with an unsteady Darcy-Brinkman equation for the flow field, including the Kortweg stress. Additionally, the flow field experiences an external body force term while the permeability fluctuates with solute concentration. Such models are used to describe flows in porous mediums such as fractured karst reservoirs, mineral wool, industrial foam, coastal mud, etc. The system of equations has Neumann boundary conditions for the solute concentration and no-flow conditions for the velocity field, and the well-posedness of the model is discussed for a wide range of initial data. The proofing techniques remain applicable in establishing the well-posedness of non-reactive and homogeneous porous media flows under the specified simplifications.

Abstract:We study the problem of the transformation of a given reactant species into an immiscible product species, as they flow through a chemically active porous medium. We derive the equation governing the evolution of the volume fraction of the species -- in a one-dimensional macroscopic description --, identify the relevant dimensionless numbers, and provide simple models for capillary pressure and relative permeabilities, which are quantities of crucial importance when tackling multiphase flows in porous media. We set the domain of validity of our models and discuss the importance of viscous coupling terms in the extended Darcy's law. We investigate numerically the steady regime and demonstrate that the spatial transformation rate of the species along the reactor is non-monotonous, as testified by the existence of an inflection point in the volume fraction profiles. We obtain the scaling of the location of this inflection point with the dimensionless lengths of the problem. Eventually, we provide key elements for optimization of the reactor.

Abstract:Fluid flow in porous media is very important in a wide range of science and engineering applications. The entire establishment of fluid flow application in porous media is based on the use of an experimental law proposed by Darcy (1856). There are evidences in the literature that the flow of a fluid in consolidated and unconsolidated porous media does not follow Darcy law at very low fluxes, which is called pre-Darcy flow. In this paper, the unsteady flow regimes of a slightly compressible fluid under the linear and radial pre-Darcy flow conditions are modeled and the corresponding highly nonlinear diffusivity equations are solved analytically by aid of a generalized Boltzmann transformation technique. The influence of pre-Darcy flow on the pressure diffusion for homogeneous porous media is studied in terms of the nonlinear exponent and the threshold pressure gradient. In addition, the pressure gradient, flux, and cumulative production per unit area are compared with the classical solution of the diffusivity equation based on Darcy flow. The presented results advance our understanding of fluid flow in low-permeability media such as shale and tight formations, where pre-Darcy is the dominant flow regime.
Velocity-vorticity-pressure mixed formulation for the Kelvin-Voigt-Brinkman-Forchheimer equations

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze a mixed formulation for the Kelvin-Voigt-Brinkman-Forchheimer equations for unsteady viscoelastic flows in porous media. Besides the velocity and pressure, our approach introduces the vorticity as a further unknown. Consequently, we obtain a three-field mixed variational formulation, where the aforementioned variables are the main unknowns of the system. We establish the existence and uniqueness of a solution for the weak formulation, and derive the corresponding stability bounds, employing a fixed-point strategy, along with monotone operators theory and Schauder theorem. Afterwards, we introduce a semidiscrete continuous-in-time approximation based on stable Stokes elements for the velocity and pressure, and continuous piecewise polynomial spaces for the vorticity. Additionally, employing backward Euler time discretization, we introduce a fully discrete finite element scheme. We prove well-posedness, derive stability bounds, and establish the corresponding error estimates for both schemes. We provide several numerical results verifying the theoretical rates of convergence and illustrating the performance and flexibility of the method for a range of domain configurations and model parameters.

Abstract:Abstract This paper is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of a model describing the interfacial flow-transport interaction in a porous-fluidic domain. The medium consists of a highly permeable material, where the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid is governed by Brinkman equations (written in terms of vorticity, velocity and pressure), and a porous medium where Darcy’s law describes fluid motion using filtration velocity and pressure. Gravity and the local fluctuations of a scalar field (representing for instance, the solids volume fraction or the concentration of a contaminant) are the main drivers of the fluid patterns on the whole domain, and the Brinkman-Darcy equations are coupled to a nonlinear transport equation accounting for mass balance of the scalar concentration. We introduce a mixed-primal variational formulation of the problem and establish existence and uniqueness of solution using fixed-point arguments and small-data assumptions. A family of Galerkin discretizations that produce divergence-free discrete velocities is also presented and analysed using similar tools to those employed in the continuous problem. Convergence of the resulting mixed-primal finite element method is proven, and some numerical examples confirming the theoretical error bounds and illustrating the performance of the proposed discrete scheme are reported.

Abstract:The flow of incompressible fluids through porous media plays a crucial role in many technological applications such as enhanced oil recovery and geological carbon-dioxide sequestration. The flow within numerous natural and synthetic porous materials that contain multiple scales of pores cannot be adequately described by the classical Darcy equations. It is for this reason that mathematical models for fluid flow in media with multiple scales of pores have been proposed in the literature. However, these models are analytically intractable for realistic problems. In this paper, a stabilized mixed four-field finite element formulation is presented to study the flow of an incompressible fluid in porous media exhibiting double porosity/permeability. The stabilization terms and the stabilization parameters are derived in a mathematically and thermodynamically consistent manner, and the computationally convenient equal-order interpolation of all the field variables is shown to be stable. A systematic error analysis is performed on the resulting stabilized weak formulation. Representative problems, patch tests and numerical convergence analyses are performed to illustrate the performance and convergence behavior of the proposed mixed formulation in the discrete setting. The accuracy of numerical solutions is assessed using the mathematical properties satisfied by the solutions of this double porosity/permeability model. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed framework can perform well under transient conditions and that it can capture well-known instabilities such as viscous fingering.

It is well known that the generalized Darcy law describing multiphase flow in porous media has some shortcomings. In particular, it cannot explain hysteresis effects in the capillary pressure--saturation curve which have been observed in measurements. In this work, we derive a numerically tractable micro-macro model including coupled generalized Darcy's laws that still includes the microscale dynamics which are responsible, e.g., for hysteresis effects. For this purpose, we extend the two-scale expansion approach of periodic homogenization to include different time scales which allows us to start from a fully instationary Navier--Stokes--Cahn--Hilliard model at the pore scale as microscale. Identifying and separating the time scales allows us to derive local fast scale equations describing the microscale dynamics and global slow-scale equations giving rise to the macroscopic Darcy law.

Abstract:We investigate in this article, the fully developed flow in a fluid-saturated channel filled with a Darcy–Brinkman–Forchheimer porous medium, which is conducted with an electrically varying parallel Lorentz force. The Lorentz force varies exponentially in the vertical direction due to low fluid electrical conductivity and the special arrangement of the magnetic and electric fields at the lower plate. With the homotopy analysis method (HAM), a particularly effective technique in solving nonlinear problems, analytical approximation series solutions with high accuracy are derived for fluid velocity and the results are illustrated in form of figures. All these flows are new and are presented for the first time in the literature.
Convective mixing in porous media: A review of Darcy, pore-scale and Hele-Shaw studies

Abstract:Convection-driven porous media flows are common in industrial processes and in nature. The multiscale and multiphase character of these systems and the inherent non-linear flow dynamics make convection in porous media a complex phenomenon. As a result, a combination of different complementary approaches, namely theory, simulations and experiments, have been deployed to elucidate the intricate physics of convection in porous media. In this work, we review recent findings on mixing in fluid-saturated porous media convection. We focus on the dissolution of a heavy fluid layer into a lighter one, and we consider different flow configurations. We present Darcy, pore-scale and Hele-Shaw investigations inspired by geophysical processes. While the results obtained for Darcy flows match the dissolution behaviour predicted theoretically, Hele-Shaw and pore-scale investigations reveal a different and tangled scenario in which finite-size effects play a key role. Finally, we present recent numerical and experimental developments and we highlight possible future research directions. The findings reviewed in this work will be crucial to make reliable predictions about the long-term behaviour of dissolution and mixing in engineering and natural processes, which are required to tackle societal challenges such as climate change mitigation and energy transition.

Abstract:We present a hybrid-mixed finite element method for a novel hybrid-dimensional model of single-phase Darcy flow in a fractured porous media. In this model, the fracture is treated as a (d−1)-dimensional interface within the d-dimensional fractured porous domain, for d=2,3. Two classes of fracture are distinguished based on the permeability magnitude ratio between the fracture and its surrounding medium: when the permeability in the fracture is (significantly) larger than in its surrounding medium, it is considered as a conductive fracture; when the permeability in the fracture is (significantly) smaller than in its surrounding medium, it is considered as a blocking fracture. The conductive fractures are treated using the classical hybrid-dimensional approach of the interface model where pressure is assumed to be continuous across the fracture interfaces, while the blocking fractures are treated using the recent Dirac-δ function approach where normal component of Darcy velocity is assumed to be continuous across the interface. Due to the use of Dirac-δ function approach for the blocking fractures, our numerical scheme allows for nonconforming meshes with respect to the blocking fractures. This is the major novelty of our model and numerical discretization. Moreover, our numerical scheme produces locally conservative velocity approximations and leads to a symmetric positive definite linear system involving pressure degrees of freedom on the mesh skeleton only. As an application, we extend the idea to a simple transport model. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by various benchmark test cases in both two- and three-dimensions. Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme is highly competitive with existing methods in the literature

Abstract:We study the Navier-Stokes-Darcy-Boussinesq system that models the thermal convection of a fluid overlying a saturated porous medium in a general decomposed domain. In both two and three spatial dimensions, we first prove the existence of global weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem subject to the Lions and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface conditions. The proof is based on a proper time-implicit discretization scheme combined with the Leray-Schauder principle and compactness arguments. Next, we establish a weak-strong uniqueness result such that a weak solution coincides with a strong solution emanating from the same initial data as long as the latter exists.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the formulation of the governing equations that describe flow of fluids in porous media. Various types of fluid flow, ranging from single-phase flow to compositional flow, are considered. It is shown that all the differential equations governing these types of flow can be effectively rewritten in a fractional flow formulation; i.e., in terms of a global pressure and saturation (or saturations), and that mixed finite element methods can be accurately exploited to solve the pressure equation. Numerical results are presented to see the performance of the mixed methods for the flow equations in three space dimensions.
Anisotropic flows of Forchheimer-type in porous media and their steady states

Abstract:We study the anisotropic Forchheimer-typed flows for compressible fluids in porous media. The first half of the paper is devoted to understanding the nonlinear structure of the anisotropic momentum equations. Unlike the isotropic flows, the important monotonicity properties are not automatically satisfied in this case. Therefore, various sufficient conditions for them are derived and applied to the experimental data. In the second half of the paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the steady state flows subject to a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. It is also established that these steady states, in appropriate functional spaces, have local Hölder continuous dependence on the forcing function and the boundary data.

Abstract:We consider implementational aspects of the mixed finite element method for a special class of nonlinear problems. We establish the equivalence of the hybridized formulation of the mixed finite element method to a nonconforming finite element method with augmented Crouzeix-Raviart ansatz space. We discuss the reduction of unknowns by static condensation and propose Newton's method for the solution of local and global systems. Finally, we show, how such a nonlinear problem arises from the mixed formulation of Darcy-Forchheimer flow in porous media.

Homogenization of some evolutionary non-Newtonian flows in porous media

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the homogenization of evolutionary incompressible purely viscous non-Newtonian flows of Carreau-Yasuda type in porous media with small perforation parameter $0< \varepsilon \ll 1$, where the small holes are periodically distributed. Darcy's law is recovered in the homogenization limit. Applying Poincaré type inequality in porous media allows us to derive the uniform estimates on velocity field, of which the gradient is small of size $\varepsilon$ in $L^{2}$ space. This indicates the nonlinear part in the viscosity coefficient does not contribute in the limit and a linear model (Darcy's law) is obtained. The estimates of the pressure rely on a proper extension from the perforated domain to the homogeneous non-perforated domain. By integrating the equations in time variable such that each term in the resulting equations has certain continuity in time, we can establish the extension of the pressure by applying the dual formula with the restriction operator.

Abstract:We develop constitutive equations for multi-component, multi-phase, macro-scale flow in a porous medium exposed to temperature-, composition-, and pressure -gradients. The porous medium is non-deformable. We define the pressure and the composition of the representative elementary volume (REV) in terms of the volume and surface averaged pressure and the saturation, and the respective driving forces from these variables. New contributions due to varying porosity or surface tension offer explanations for non-Darcy behavior. The interaction of a thermal and mechanical driving forces give thermal osmosis. An experimental program is suggested to verify Onsager symmetry in the transport coefficients.

Abstract:The turbulent flow through a plane channel bounded by a single permeable wall is considered; this is a problem of interest since a carefully chosen distribution of grains and voids in the porous medium can result in skin friction reduction for the flow in the channel. In the homogenization approach followed here, the flow is not resolved in the porous layer, but an effective velocity boundary condition is developed (and later enforced) at a virtual interface between the porous bed and the channel flow. The condition is valid up to order two in terms of a small gauge factor, the ratio of microscopic to macroscopic length scales; it contains slip coefficients, plus surface and bulk permeability coefficients, which arise from the solution of microscale problems solved in a representative elementary volume. Using the effective boundary conditions, free of empirical parameters, direct numerical simulations are then performed in the channel, considering a few different porous substrates. The results, examined in terms of mean values and turbulence statistics, demonstrate the drag-reducing effects of porous substrates with streamwise-preferential alignment of the solid grains.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study gravity currents of a Newtonian fluid advancing in a two-dimensional, infinite and saturated porous domain over a horizontal impermeable bed. The driving force is due to the density difference between the denser flowing fluid and the lighter, immobile ambient fluid. The current is taken to be in the Darcy–Forchheimer regime, where a term quadratic in the seepage velocity accounts for inertial contributions to the resistance. The volume of fluid of the current varies as a function of time as , where the exponent parameterizes the case of constant volume subject to dam break ( ), of constant ( ), waning ( ) and waxing inflow rate ( ). The nonlinear governing equations, developed within the lubrication theory, admit self-similar solutions for some combinations of the parameters involved and for two limiting conditions of low and high local Forchheimer number, a dimensionless quantity involving the local slope of the current profile. Another parameter expresses the relative importance of the nonlinear term in Darcy–Forchheimer's law; values of in practical applications may vary in a large interval around unity, e.g. ; in our experiments, . Sixteen experiments with three different grain sizes of the porous medium and different inflow rates corroborate the theory: the experimental nose speed and current profiles are in good agreement with the theory. Moreover, the asymptotic behaviour of the self-similar solutions is in excellent agreement with the numerical results of the direct integration of the full problem, confirming the validity of a relatively simple one-dimensional model.
