Abstract:This study showed that carbon capture and utilization can be realized through the industrial production of cement-free concrete products exclusively prepared from steel slag via near-ambient pressure (AP) carbonation. Concrete pipes were chosen to investigate their feasibility at a laboratory scale before applying them to the pilot level. It was found despite a lower CO 2 uptake, AP-carbonation-cured concrete slabs exhibited comparable strength of 30 MPa as high-pressure (HP)-carbonation-cured ones. The fast and intensive reactions induced by HP-carbonation could cause different microstructures as AP-carbonation consequently affecting the strength development. X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimetric analysis, and Raman spectra analysis confirmed that AP-carbonation was as effective as HP-carbonation in producing carbonates. AP tended to have more uniformly effective carbonation than HP. Therefore, concrete pipes under AP-carbonation presented comparable three-edge-bearing-test (TEBT) crushing strength (61 versus 57 kN/m) and similar resistance to internal expanding forces as those from HP-carbonation (1.1 versus 0.9 MPa). After carbonation, the concrete resistance to freeze-thaw damage and sulfuric acid attack was also significantly improved. The environmental evaluation reveals that AP-carbonation can avoid 224.7 kg of CO 2 emissions by producing one-tonne steel slag concrete. Besides, the higher emission-reduction-contribution (ERC) efficiency of 95.5 % in AP-carbonation suggests AP can be used to activate steel slag concrete in large-scale concrete production next to CO 2 resource plants. Lastly, the cost of concrete is significantly reduced from $206.3/m 3 in OPC-based pipes to $39.2/m 3 in AP-carbonated steel slag-based pipes, which will likely engage various stakeholders to further promote the industrial application of carbonation-cured steel slag products.
