Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive energy, exergy, and environmental analysis of a triple-stage cascade refrigeration system (TCRS) using four refrigerant blends: R1150/R170/R717, R1150/R170/R290, R1150/R170/R1270, and R1150/R170/RE170, aiming to achieve ultra-low temperatures. Both thermodynamic performance and environmental impact of the system are modeled considering the real gases behavior by coupling REFPROP to MATLAB. Several bio-inspired optimization algorithms including NRBO, Puma, QIO, JSOA, and HsO were tested, with HsO proving to be the most efficient in terms of convergence times and accuracy over 500 iterations. The model was validated against literature data, showing an error margin of less than 3% in COP, when condensing temperature was set at 40 °C and evaporating temperatures at − 120 °C and at − 80 °C. Further performance analysis revealed that system efficiency (COP) is inversely proportional to condensing temperature and proportional to evaporating temperature, with COP values ranging between 0.35 and 0.9. Increasing the temperature difference between condensing and evaporating stages affects significantly compressor discharge temperatures, particularly for ammonia, which can exceed 125 °C, leading to potential lubrication issues. Environmentally, the R1150/R170/RE170 blend demonstrated the lowest total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) at approximately 7.15 MTCO2, making it the recommended refrigerant blend due to its superior thermodynamic and environmental performance compared to the others.
