Abstract:Non-invertible symmetries of quantum field theories and many-body systems generalize the concept of symmetries by allowing non-invertible operations in addition to more ordinary invertible ones described by groups. The aim of this paper is to point out that these non-invertible symmetries act on local operators by quantum operations, i.e. completely positive maps between density matrices, which form a natural class of operations containing both unitary evolutions and measurements and play an important role in quantum information theory. This observation will be illustrated by the Kramers--Wannier duality of the one-dimensional quantum Ising chain, which is a prototypical example of non-invertible symmetry operations.

Abstract:According to a fundamental result in quantum computing, any unitary transformation on a composite system can be generated using so-called 2-local unitaries that act only on two subsystems. Beyond its importance in quantum computing, this result can also be regarded as a statement about the dynamics of systems with local Hamiltonians: although locality puts various constraints on the short-term dynamics, it does not restrict the possible unitary evolutions that a composite system with a general local Hamiltonian can experience after a sufficiently long time. Here we show that this universality does not remain valid in the presence of conservation laws and global continuous symmetries such as U(1) and SU(2). In particular, we show that generic symmetric unitaries cannot be implemented, even approximately, using local symmetric unitaries. Based on this no-go theorem, we propose a method for experimentally probing the locality of interactions in nature. In the context of quantum thermodynamics, our results mean that generic energy-conserving unitary transformations on a composite system cannot be realized solely by combining local energy-conserving unitaries on the components. We show how this can be circumvented via catalysis.

Abstract:We survey recent developments in a novel kind of generalized global symmetry, the non-invertible symmetry, in diverse spacetime dimensions. We start with several different but related constructions of the non-invertible Kramers-Wannier duality symmetry in the Ising model, and conclude with a new interpretation for the neutral pion decay and other applications. These notes are based on lectures given at the TASI 2023 summer school "Aspects of Symmetry."

On Unitary 2-Group Symmetries

Abstract:Global internal symmetries act unitarily on local observables or states of a quantum system. In this note, we aim to generalise this statement to extended observables by considering unitary actions of finite global 2-group symmetries $\mathcal{G}$ on line operators. We propose that the latter transform in unitary 2-representations of $\mathcal{G}$, which we classify up to unitary equivalence. Our results recover the known classification of ordinary 2-representations of finite 2-groups, but provide additional data interpreted as a type of reflection anomaly for $\mathcal{G}$.

Abstract:What comprises a global symmetry of a Quantum Field Theory (QFT) has been vastly expanded in the past 10 years to include not only symmetries acting on higher-dimensional defects, but also most recently symmetries which do not have an inverse. The principle that enables this generalization is the identification of symmetries with topological defects in the QFT. In these lectures, we provide an introduction to generalized symmetries, with a focus on non-invertible symmetries. We begin with a brief overview of invertible generalized symmetries, including higher-form and higher-group symmetries, and then move on to non-invertible symmetries. The main idea that underlies many constructions of non-invertible symmetries is that of stacking a QFT with topological QFTs (TQFTs) and then gauging a diagonal non-anomalous global symmetry. The TQFTs become topological defects in the gauged theory called (twisted) theta defects and comprise a large class of non-invertible symmetries including condensation defects, self-duality defects, and non-invertible symmetries of gauge theories with disconnected gauge groups. We will explain the general principle and provide numerous concrete examples. Following this extensive characterization of symmetry generators, we then discuss their action on higher-charges, i.e. extended physical operators. As we will explain, even for invertible higher-form symmetries these are not only representations of the p -form symmetry group, but more generally what are called higher-representations. Finally, we give an introduction to the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) and its utility in characterizing symmetries, their gauging and generalized charges.

Non-Universality from Conserved Superoperators in Unitary Circuits

Abstract:An important result in the theory of quantum control is the "universality" of $2$-local unitary gates, i.e. the fact that any global unitary evolution of a system of $L$ qudits can be implemented by composition of $2$-local unitary gates. Surprisingly, recent results have shown that universality can break down in the presence of symmetries: in general, not all globally symmetric unitaries can be constructed using $k$-local symmetric unitary gates. This also restricts the dynamics that can be implemented by symmetric local Hamiltonians. In this paper, we show that obstructions to universality in such settings can in general be understood in terms of superoperator symmetries associated with unitary evolution by restricted sets of gates. These superoperator symmetries lead to block decompositions of the operator Hilbert space, which dictate the connectivity of operator space, and hence the structure of the dynamical Lie algebra. We demonstrate this explicitly in several examples by systematically deriving the superoperator symmetries from the gate structure using the framework of commutant algebras, which has been used to systematically derive symmetries in other quantum many-body systems. We clearly delineate two different types of non-universality, which stem from different structures of the superoperator symmetries, and discuss its signatures in physical observables. In all, our work establishes a comprehensive framework to explore the universality of unitary circuits and derive physical consequences of its absence.

Theory of Quantum Circuits with Abelian Symmetries

Abstract:Quantum circuits with gates (local unitaries) respecting a global symmetry have broad applications in quantum information science and related fields, such as condensed matter theory and thermodynamics. However, despite their widespread use, fundamental properties of such circuits are not well-understood. Recently, it was found that generic unitaries respecting a global symmetry cannot be realized, even approximately, using gates that respect the same symmetry. This observation raises important open questions: What unitary transformations can be realized with k-local gates that respect a global symmetry? In other words, in the presence of a global symmetry, how does the locality of interactions constrain the possible time evolution of a composite system? In this work, we address these questions for the case of Abelian (commutative) symmetries and develop constructive methods for synthesizing circuits with such symmetries. Remarkably, as a corollary, we find that, while the locality of interactions still imposes additional constraints on realizable unitaries, certain restrictions observed in the case of non-Abelian symmetries do not apply to circuits with Abelian symmetries. For instance, in circuits with a general non-Abelian symmetry such as SU($d$), the unitary realized in a subspace with one irreducible representation (charge) of the symmetry dictates the realized unitaries in multiple other sectors with inequivalent representations of the symmetry. Furthermore, in certain sectors, rather than all unitaries respecting the symmetry, the realizable unitaries are the symplectic or orthogonal subgroups of this group. We prove that none of these restrictions appears in the case of Abelian symmetries. This result suggests that global non-Abelian symmetries may affect the thermalization of quantum systems in ways not possible under Abelian symmetries.

Abstract:Some quantum information processing protocols necessitate quantum operations that are invariant under complex conjugation. In this study, we analyze the non-local resources necessary for implementing conjugation-symmetric measurements on multipartite quantum networks. We derive conditions under which a given multipartite conjugation can have locally implementable symmetric measurements. In particular, a family of numbers called the ``magic-basis spectrum'' comprehensively characterizes the local measurability of a given 2-qubit conjugation, as well as any other properties that are invariant under local unitary transformations. We also explore the non-local resources required for optimal measurements on known quantum sensor networks by using their conjugation symmetries as a guide.

Diagonal unitary and orthogonal symmetries in quantum theory II: Evolution operators

Abstract:We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. Our scrutiny reveals that these operators can be used to simulate any bipartite unitary gate via stochastic local operations and classical communication. Furthermore, we establish a one-to-one connection between the set of local diagonal unitary invariant dual unitary operators with maximum entangling power and the set of complex Hadamard matrices. Finally, we discuss distinguishability of unitary operators in the setting of the stated diagonal symmetry.
Invertibility of Condensation Defects and Symmetries of 2 + 1d QFTs

Abstract:We characterize discrete (anti-)unitary symmetries and their non-invertible generalizations in $2+1$d topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) through their actions on line operators and fusion spaces. We explain all possible sources of non-invertibility that can arise in this context. Our approach gives a simple $2+1$d proof that non-invertible generalizations of unitary symmetries exist if and only if a bosonic TQFT contains condensable bosonic line operators (i.e., these non-invertible symmetries are necessarily "non-intrinsic"). Moving beyond unitary symmetries and their non-invertible cousins, we define a non-invertible generalization of time-reversal symmetries and derive various properties of TQFTs with such symmetries. Finally, using recent results on 2-categories, we extend our results to corresponding statements in $2+1$d quantum field theories that are not necessarily topological.

Abstract:We show that, in principle, N-partite unitary transformations can be perfectly discriminated under local operations and classical communication despite their nonlocal properties. Based on this result, some related topics, including the construction of the appropriate quantum circuit together with the extension to general completely positive trace preserving operations, are discussed.

Abstract:We consider the problem of building non-invertible quantum symmetries (as characterized by actions of unitary fusion categories) on noncommutative tori. We introduce a general method to construct actions of fusion categories on inductive limit C*-algberas using finite dimenionsal data, and then apply it to obtain AT-actions of arbitrary Haagerup-Izumi categories on noncommutative 2-tori, of the even part of the $E_{8}$ subfactor on a noncommutative 3-torus, and of $\text{PSU}(2)_{15}$ on a noncommutative 4-torus.

Abstract:Over the past decade, classical optical systems with gain or loss, modeled by non-Hermitian parity-time symmetric Hamiltonians, have been deeply investigated. Yet, their applicability to the quantum domain with number-resolved photonic states is fundamentally voided by quantum-limited amplifier noise. Here, we show that second-quantized Hermitian Hamiltonians on the Fock space give rise to non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonians that generate the dynamics of corresponding creation and annihilation operators. Using this equivalence between PT-symmetry and symplectic Bogoliubov transformations, we create a quantum optical scheme comprising squeezing, phase-shifters, and beam-splitters for simulating arbitrary non-unitary processes by way of singular value decomposition. In contrast to the post-selection scheme for non-Hermitian quantum simulation, the success probability in this approach is independent of the system size or simulation time and can be efficiently Trotterised similar to a unitary transformation.

Abstract:We show that quantum circuits restricted by a symmetry inherit the properties of the whole special unitary group $SU(2^n)$, in particular composition, algebraic and topological closedness and connectedness. It extends prior work on symmetric states to the operators and shows that the operator space follows the same structure as the state space. The well-behavedness is independent of the symmetry requirement imposed on the subgroup. We provide an example of a permutation invariance across all qubits.

Anomalies of Non-Invertible Symmetries in (3+1)d

Abstract:Anomalies of global symmetries are important tools for understanding the dynamics of quantum systems. We investigate anomalies of non-invertible symmetries in 3+1d using 4+1d bulk topological quantum field theories given by Abelian two-form gauge theories, with a 0-form permutation symmetry. Gauging the 0-form symmetry gives the 4+1d "inflow" symmetry topological field theory for the non-invertible symmetry. We find a two levels of anomalies: (1) the bulk may fail to have an appropriate set of loop excitations which can condense to trivialize the boundary dynamics, and (2) the "Frobenius-Schur indicator" of the non-invertible symmetry (generalizing the Frobenius-Schur indicator of 1+1d fusion categories) may be incompatible with trivial boundary dynamics. As a consequence we derive conditions for non-invertible symmetries in 3+1d to be compatible with symmetric gapped phases, and invertible gapped phases. Along the way, we see that the defects characterizing $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ ordinary symmetry host worldvolume theories with time-reversal symmetry $\mathsf{T}$ obeying the algebra $\mathsf{T}^{2}=C$ or $\mathsf{T}^{2}=(-1)^{F}C,$ with $C$ a unitary charge conjugation symmetry. We classify the anomalies of this symmetry algebra in 2+1d and further use these ideas to construct 2+1d topological orders with non-invertible time-reversal symmetry that permutes anyons. As a concrete realization of our general discussion, we construct new lattice Hamiltonian models in 3+1d with non-invertible symmetry, and constrain their dynamics.

Abstract:In the past year several constructions of non-invertible symmetries in Quantum Field Theory in $d\geq 3$ have appeared. In this paper we provide a unified perspective on these constructions. Central to this framework are so-called theta defects, which generalize the notion of theta-angles, and allow the construction of universal and non-universal topological symmetry defects. We complement this physical analysis by proposing a mathematical framework (based on higher-fusion categories) that converts the physical construction of non-invertible symmetries into a concrete computational scheme.
