Abstract:The vinyl album record cover was long one of the primary ways for bands and artists to expose themselves visually. During the 1950's, experimental design was seen particularly in jazz covers, while the early rock music had a more direct and commercial approach to cover design. As rock and popular cultures in the 1960's developed, the record package evolved as an artistic form of expression and visual representation of music. Expressions mainly associated with traditional art was absorbed by popular culture and has had a decisive effect on the current view of the record cover as an art form. In the 1970's, there was an increasing diversification of popular music and a more clear distinction between commercial mainstream music and alternative music, which is reflected in the album covers. During the 1980's, the music video played an important role in how music and the artists were presented visually. New formats as the audio cassette and CD took over the role of the LP on the disc market. During the 1990's when independent labels and artists reached a wider audience, several of their album releases were on vinyl formats. Internet and file sharing of music, has had a significant impact on the music industry in the 2000's and there is a decline in the sales of physical media such as CD's. As a consequence, opportunities for independent operators to spread their music has changed radically. At the same time there is an increasesed interest in the vinyl record as an alternative or a complement to digital music. This increased interest in vinyl albums has largely to do with the visual expression of the album cover in relation to CD's and digital files, as well as with the physical form of the LP and its characteristics as a collector's item.

Abstract:Mass culture and popular culture is one of the important phenomena that was born after the postmodern era. In a society that lives in the midst of mass culture and popular culture, will grow consumer communities that produce new cultural symbols and activities. This discourse then influenced various aspects, for example, the emergence of popular music and popular art movements which soon became a commodities that was consumed by many youth people. This study discusses the influence of popular culture on the visuals of music album covers which take several album covers of international musicians from different time periods as samples to compare the similarities or friction caused by various art developments as their response toward happening trends. This study uses qualitative method. This study of various visual images was considering the aesthetic idioms of postmodernism, including Pastiche, Parody, Kitsch, Camp and Schizophrenia, as well as the concepts of several art movements, such as Pop Art and Lowbrow Art. The final result of this study reveal that several music albums using the Pop Art and Lowbrow Art style contained postmodern aesthetic idioms. Each album cover can contain one or several aesthetic idioms simultaneously.

Abstract:O rock brasileiro nos anos 1960 foi uma música de grande sucesso e importância para a indústria fonográfica. Dentre várias mídias, as capas de discos se destacam por representarem a música, a juventude e as articulações da memória na fotografia e no design. O objetivo deste artigo é entender a construção da memória do início do rock no Brasil e da jovem guarda por meio das representações visuais nas capas dos long-playings (LPs). O corpus compreende as discografias de 35 artistas, entre 1959 e 1970. Usamos as noções de representação (HALL, 2016; LOTMAN, 1998); memória (HALBWACHS, 1990; HUYSSEN, 2001; POLLAK, 1989; BOSI, 2003; RICOUER, 2007); performance (ZUMTHOR, 2010) e design (DONDIS, 2003). O estudo destaca as representações de corpos e comportamentos, e como o design traduziu rock e juventude nas capas.

Abstract:As a precursor to acid design, the "Baby Boomers" of the post-World War II era questioned America's materialistic, conservative cultural and political norms, and psychedelic music festivals and concerts became the most prominent feature of this period, influencing to some extent the design of band posters and album covers, as well as influenced psychedelic visual design. Therefore, the characteristics of psychedelic visual design are closely related to the Art Nouveau movement, Vienna Secession, Surrealism and Pop Art, and psychedelic visual design also has implications for the development of design today.

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to reveal the influence of stage images of rock musicians on fashion design trends formation. Research methodology: the authors of the article use methods of source study analysis to determine the level of scientific development of the issue, comparative historical analysis to identify the characteristic features of images of musicians and catwalk models of clothing collections of famous designers, and theoretical generalization to draw conclusions. The scientific novelty of the work is to highlight the influence of stage images of musicians on the formation of modern trends in fashion design. The analysis of genre affiliation reveals stylistic differences of the stage costume of popular musicians of the USA and Europe. Some stylistic characteristics of the artists’ stage clothing could be traced in the collections of famous fashion brands of the 21st century, such as Balenciaga, Philipp Plein, Vetements, Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, and others. Conclusions. The research reveals the main stylistic features of the stage costume of hard rock and heavy metal musicians. Stage images of artists were innovative and widely used in fashion design of the 20th and early 21st century. The active influence of musicians on fashion trends began in the 60s and 70s of the twentieth century, which coincided with the development of stage costume design and the significant spread of media technology. Hard rock and heavy metal performers created and popularized such a style direction as “grunge”, which is one of the leading musical trends in 2020–2021. Designers of the 21st century borrowed many details, visual and stylistic features, and even concepts for brands from popular hard and heavy artists of the 1970s–1990s. Stage images of rock musicians have a significant impact on the development of fashion and design.

Abstract:This study investigates the positioning of emotional language imagesin popular music genres for developing textile print design ideas. Auditory and synaesthetic imagery were employed to deduct emotional language imageries from popular music genres and analyze differences in emotional language imageries according to popular music genres. Six genres of popular music were selected as stimulus and a survey was conducted to analyze emotional language imagery differences and similarities depending on popular music genres. The results of this study were: The results of the factor analysis and the reliability test on emotional language imagery showed factorial structures that include Lyrical-Feminine, Intense-Masculine, Euphoric-Active, Gloomy-Melancholy, Abstruse-Sophisticated, and Addictive-Continuous. The results of the mean scores of emotional language imagery of each popular music genre showed that respondents tended to perceive that ballad and new age music are similar and hip-hop & rap, dance, and metal-rock are similar. Based on the multidimensional scaling analysis, new age positioned Lyrical-Feminine, metal-rock positioned Intense-Masculine, dance music positioned Euphoric-Active, and ballad positioned Gloomy-Melancholy. This study provides elementary resources to inspire innovative textile prints designed through different characteristics of emotional language imagery according to each popular music genre.

Abstract:The Australian artist Martin Sharp (1942–2013) produced a series of psychedelic artworks in London between 1966 and 1968, the most famous of which were the Disraeli Gears record cover for rock group Cream and the Bob Dylan Blowin’ in the Mind poster. Sharp’s work exemplifies the connection between early twentieth century Modernist art movements, Pop art and acid-induced psychedelia of the 1960s. In addition, the poster Max Ernst: The Birdman from 1967, represents a homage to Dada and Surrealism, with special reference to anarchy, desire, and freedom of expression. In the spirit of Dada, the poster is meaningfully confrontational, exposing the darker side of the 1960s countercultural revolution in Western societies. This aspect of the youth movements of the 1960s is part of a continuum, drawing upon ideas and activities championed during the late 1910s and early 1920s by proponents of Dada and Surrealism. These resurfaced within the multifaceted counterculture of the 1960s, spurred on by Cold War tensions, rejection of 1950s conservative mores, opposition to nuclear proliferation, the conflict in Vietnam, an explosion in popular music, and the widespread use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD. Sharp’s art is part of this confrontational continuum.
Does the typeface on album cover influence expectations and perception of music?

Abstract:CD and digital album covers are part of the music purchase/consumption experience; yet, very little is known about how album cover design influences people's expectations concerning, and their perception of, music. This article explores the effect of the typeface curvilinearity of album cover design on people's expectations and perception of music. Typeface curvilinearity has been shown to influence expectations across other sensory modalities, such as taste (gustation). Across 3 studies, we demonstrate how angular versus rounded typeface can impact expectations concerning how the music will sound. We also demonstrate how angular and rounded typefaces influence emotion ratings of actual music samples. In Experiment 1, typeface curvilinearity influenced people's expectations of music, with participants expecting the music to sound more angular, masculine, fast, rough, happy, evil, violent, exciting, and active when the typeface on the faux CD album cover was angular compared with when it was round. Conversely, participants expected the music to sound more round, feminine, slow, smooth, sad, good, gentle, calm, and passive when the typeface was round than when it was angular. Experiment 2 demonstrated that typeface curvilinearity influenced people's ratings of emotional valence but not arousal in neutral music (i.e., music that is considered neither round nor angular). Specifically, participants evaluated the music as sounding more pleasant when the CD cover featured round typeface. Finally, in Experiment 3, we did not find evidence that CD album cover typeface influences people's perception of arousal or valance of music when the music itself is rated as sounding highly round or angular. Abstract:With the explosion of rock music in the mid-1960s, women arrived-as performers, critics, and fans. While operating in radically different ways within rock culture, female musicians, journalists, and groupies rewrote women's roles on and off the stage in the 1960s and 1970s. Electric Ladyland is a social and cultural history of this formative era in rock and roll, examining how the changing roles of women were intertwined with the evolution of the music. Articles and reviews from Rolling Stone and the Village Voice provide a window on a time when female musicians such as Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell battled sexism from concert promoters and mainly male reviewers. Feminist rock journalists, however, were coming into their own. In particular, Ellen Willis, music critic for the New Yorker, and Lillian Roxon, author of the influential Rock Encyclopedia, transformed the way society perceived sometimes marginalized female performers. The groupie was born at the same time, and Rhodes devotes considerable attention to the rise of this phenomenon. Through journalistic accounts as well as personal interviews with groupies of the 1960s and 1970s, she explores these women's dual legacy of self-assertion and promiscuous behavior that resonates to this day through the popularity of such films as Almost Famous. Deeply informed by critical media studies and drawing on diverse and rich sources, Electric Ladyland assesses the lasting effects of cultural representations on female sexuality and gender roles.

Abstract:Research aim. The article is devoted to the review of modern clothing design projects in the context of quoting the stage images of hard rock and heavy metal musicians of the 1970s-1990s. Research methods. The source analysis method was used to find out the level of scientific development of the problem. Collecting factual material method was used to search for visual information. To describe and process the visual information of stage images of musicians and shows of leading designers’ collections, the Art history methods, aesthetic and structural-compositional analysis, as well as the comparative method, were used. The theoretical generalization method was used to formulate the conclusions. Visual material is taken from printed publications and the Internet. Scientific novelty is in identifying the main stylistic features of the stage costume of performers of the hard rock and heavy metal musical genres in the 70s and 90s of the 20th century, as well as in comparing and finding quotes of stage images of musicians in modern catwalk clothing collections. Conclusions. The development of the stage costume design of hard rock and heavy metal genres with its wide influence on street fashion, as well as “official fashion”, was due to a significant spread of media technologies popularization at the end of the 20th century. Stage images of artists were imitated and introduced into an everyday wardrobe, firstly, by their fans; secondly, its distribution was facilitated by high-profile advertising companies promoting bands and performers; thirdly, it spread through the fashion industry and the work of talented designers who sensed the mood of society and were able to predict the commercial success of the new aesthetic. In the 21st century well-known brands and designers actively quote performers’ stage costumes. Ways of quoting are very diverse: from completely copying images or borrowing a separate assortment, copying forms and details of clothes to the imitation of cut, decoration, and trimming. The most popular quoting is the use of band mascots or logos to print and design materials, various patches, and stickers. Borrowing a characteristic combination of the assortment in creating a general image has recently become the most popular. From the general trends of today, we come to the conclusion that experiments with the form itself and its material components are significantly inferior to experiments with the emotional filling of images, which are successfully provided by quoting the stage costume with its hyperbolized spectacularity and expressiveness.

Abstract:Abstract Through the analysis of the meanings that are attributed to the clothes that could be classified as retro, this article will examine how young people who are drawn to this particular trend imagine the future. Being empirically rooted, the article contends with the loss of the idea of future, which is often associated with the revivals in fashion as a segment of a wider “retro scenario” (Baudrillard, 1981). According to research findings, not only does that future still exist, but in our path towards it, retro plays a double role: practical, related to the issue of sustainability, which is tightly related to the imagination of future through the lenses of global risks and deterioration; and symbolic, encompassing the entanglement of past, present and future that retro conveys, and stands for the importance of continuity though “embedding” some aspects of past into the idea of future.

Abstract:This article focuses on the emerging styles of visual digital aesthetics that have become relevant in light of technological advancements and the introduction of innovative tools for creating and processing digital images. The analysis is based on a cultural approach and aims to identify the influence of contemporary digital technologies on the shaping of cultural benchmarks and aesthetic preferences in art and design. The primary focus is on scrutinizing the defining attributes of modern styles that have taken shape within the digital sphere at the onset of the 21st century (such as vaporwave, seapunk, webpunk, psychedelia, pixel art, voxel art, and others) and delving into their artistic autonomy and cultural nuances. Style is defined here as both a guiding principle of artistic thought and a distinctive mode of communication among cultural agents. An integral component of this study involves comprehending how digital technologies impact the interpretation of contemporary culture and society at large. The study aims to uncover the peculiarities of modern transnational culture, as a mode of consciousness and worldview, through the lens of the artistic culture of the early 21st century. The research identifies overarching tendencies characteristic of contemporary network art, outlining the interrelations and differentiations among new digital styles. It meticulously examines distinct style clusters based on various criteria. The classification of contemporary visual styles is predicated on methods and techniques of creation and imitation, usage contexts, presentation specifics, and design elements. Abstract:In modern societies, cultural change seems ceaseless. The flux of fashion is especially obvious for popular music. While much has been written about the origin and evolution of pop, most claims about its history are anecdotal rather than scientific in nature. To rectify this we investigate the US Billboard Hot 100 between 1960 and 2010. Using Music Information Retrieval (MIR) and text-mining tools we analyse the musical properties of ~17,000 recordings that appeared in the charts and demonstrate quantitative trends in their harmonic and timbral properties. We then use these properties to produce an audio-based classification of musical styles and study the evolution of musical diversity and disparity, testing, and rejecting, several classical theories of cultural change. Finally, we investigate whether pop musical evolution has been gradual or punctuated. We show that, although pop music has evolved continuously, it did so with particular rapidity during three stylistic "revolutions" around 1964, 1983 and 1991. We conclude by discussing how our study points the way to a quantitative science of cultural change.

Collection of scientific works “Notes on Art Criticism”

Abstract:The purpose of the article is to develop the issues of quoting the art direction of pop art and the use of artistic techniques of its representatives in the design of clothing of the late XX - early XXI centuries. Visual material covering the history of fashion of the end of the XX - beginning of the XXI century taken from printed publications and the Internet. Methodology. Methods of literary, socio-cultural, art history, aesthetic, and structural-compositional analyzes were used. The scientific novelty of the work lies in identifying the main stages and specifics of quoting pop art in clothing design of the late XX - early XXI century. Brands and designers who turned to the motives of this art direction from 1960 to 2010 were considered. Conclusions. It is determined that the iconography of pop art in clothing design includes the following: portraits of celebrities; reproductions of famous paintings, banners and posters; covers and pages of newspapers and magazines, comics; images of letters, words, slogans and logos; different types of packaging; home appliances; plumbing; electrical appliances; means of transport; food; tobacco products and alcoholic beverages. It was found that the techniques typical of pop art, such as a combination of illusory and real, hyperbolization of objects or their individual properties, duplication of images, mixing bright contrasting colors and multi-context images, introducing quotes, and using collages of photographs were fully adapted to clothing design in the twentieth century. Since the eighties of the twentieth century. The parody approach to creativity characteristic of pop art is spreading. In the XXI century. designers focused on "combining the incompatible." Pop-art ideas for decorating things with a simple cut with various slogans and of everyday and commonly available motifs, as well as imitation materials, have become the most widespread for ready-made clothes.
