Abstract:In order to study the anti-penetration mechanism of the composite structures and the influence of foamed aluminum on the anti-penetration performance of the composite structures, two composite structures were designed and processed. Penetration tests were carried out on the composite structures, finite element models were established and the correctness were verified. The results show that foamed aluminum has a cushioning effect and can reduce ceramic damage. However, the foamed aluminum cannot provide support for the deformation of the Kevlar, which leads to shear damage of Kevlar and reduces penetration resistance.

Abstract:A novel composite double-arrow auxetic structure was designed and fabricated in this paper. The ballistic impact experiments were conducted using one stage gas gun to study the effects of the relative density on the impact responses and failure mechanism. The impact process of the projectile was recorded by a high-speed camera. The ballistic limit velocities, damage area and failure mechanism of composite double-arrow auxetic structure with different relative densities were compared and analyzed. The anti-penetration performances of composite double-arrow auxetic structure were evaluated and discussed based on the experimental results. In order to simulate and reveal the damage evolution process, the finite element model was used to simulate the ballistic impact process of composite double-arrow auxetic structure. The ballistic limit velocities and failure modes of the simulation results were compared with that of the experimental results. The comparison indicated that the simulated results were in agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:In present study, the foam-filled composite double-arrow auxetic structures were obtained by the mold hot pressing method, bonding technology and stirring foaming process. The ballistic impact tests of the foam-filled composite double-arrow auxetic structure were carried out, and the effect of foam filling on the ballistic impact response of the composite double-arrow auxetic structure was analyzed. The ballistic impact test results indicated that the ballistic limit velocity of the foam-filled double-arrow auxetic structure with the relative density of 16.66% was 121.30 m/s. With the increase of the incident kinetic energy of the projectile, the specific energy absorption of the foam-filled auxetic structure increased first and then decreased, and remained near the horizontal line of 550 J/kg at last. Compared to unfilled auxetic structure, the ballistic limit velocity of foam-filled auxetic structure increased by 6.12% and the energy absorption property of foam-filled auxetic structure was improved. The ballistic impact performances of foam-filled composite double-arrow auxetic structures were studied by finite element method. The simulation results of foam-filled auxetic structure with RD=16.66% were in good agreement with the experimental results. The simulation results demonstrated that the ballistic limit velocities of foam-filled composite auxetic structures with relative densities of 9.08%, 16.66% and 23.06% were 86.74 m/s, 120.60 m/s and 152.80 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, the increase of relative density had a positive effect on improving the anti-penetration performance of foam-filled composite auxetic structures.

Abstract:The gradient ceramic/high-entropy alloy (HEA) composite combines the high hardness of ceramics and the high toughness of metal alloys with a gradient spacious distribution. It is designed to improve the penetration resistance as a promising protective material with high specific stiffness and strength. In this work, the equivalent model of gradient ceramic/HEA composite material is established by adopting layered structure design, and the material properties of gradient material with different ceramic volume content are calculated. Combined with stress wave theory and numerical simulation of the separated Hopkinson pressure bar, the stress wave propagation under impact is studied for the gradient ceramic/HEA composite and the ceramic/HEA double-layered material. The anti-penetration mechanism is scrutinized. The interlaminar wave impedance increase gradually in the gradient composite but smaller than in double-layered material. The coefficient of reflected stress wave in the gradient composite is much smaller than that of the double-layered material. With the increment of ceramic volume content, the reflected wave amplitude in the gradient composites gingerly decreases. Opposed to the distinct interlayer interfaces that discontinue stress waves in the double-layered material, the internal interface of the gradient composite is much more tranquil and modulate the stress wave smoothly and synchronically with the gradient of composite. The smoothened internal interface is the key and the mechanism the better impact resistance of the gradient material. Our results might be beneficial in material design of the protective materials for impact resistance.

Abstract:The carbon fiber reinforced composite reentrant honeycomb structures with different gradient distributions of wall thickness were manufactured by mold hot pressing and bonding technology. The dynamic responses of composite gradient reentrant honeycomb structures under local impact load were investigated. The impact process and failure behavior of composite gradient reentrant honeycomb structures under local impact load were obtained through the foam aluminum projectile impact experiment. The influence of wall thickness gradient form on the impact resistance of composite reentrant honeycomb structure was analyzed. The results showed that the wall thickness gradient setting of the reentrant honeycomb structure could reduce the maximum transverse deformation of the rear panel, and improve the anti-impact ability of the structure compared with homogeneous reentrant honeycomb structure. In addition, compared with the positive gradient reentrant honeycomb structure, the negative reentrant honeycomb structure had better impact resistance, and the impact resistance advantage became more obvious with the increase of the impact strength. The finite element model of composite gradient reentrant honeycomb structure under local impact load was presented, and the dynamic responses and failure modes of the numerical simulation results were compared with that of the experimental results.

Abstract:Double arrowhead honeycombs (DAHs) are auxetic cellular materials with negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). The quasi-static and impact behaviors of both uniform and functionally graded DAHs are explored. Analytical expressions for the in-plane Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and quasi-static yield stress of uniform DAHs are derived and are found to be consistent with finite element (FE) predictions, showing that the quasi-static yield stress of DAHs is dependent upon the geometrical parameters and NPR. Systematical simulations of uniform DAHs subject to different impact velocities reveal that there exists a critical impact velocity beyond which the dynamic plateau stress is insensitive to the effect of NPR. A semi-empirical expression of the plateau stress is obtained. For functionally graded DAHs, they are shown to only have improved energy absorption capacity under high velocity impacts. Moreover, the results of uniform DAHs are shown to be able to be adopted to interpret the simulated plateau stress of functionally graded DAHs under impact loading. The deformation mechanisms associated with the impact resistance of DAHs are also discussed.

Abstract:This research investigates the low-velocity impact behavior of a spherical rigid body on a composite shell reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLs), in which GPL have been uniformly dispersed and randomly arranged within each individual layer. The weight proportion of GPL has been altered across the thickness. The modified Halpin Tsai model is employed to analyze the Young's modulus and the effective material characteristics of a composite reinforced with graphene platelets (GPLRC). The mass density and Poisson's ratio of the viscoelastic multilayer composite are determined using the rule of mixture. The material parameters of each layer are defined according to the Kelvin–Voigt model. The governing equations have been derived by applying the first order shear deformation shell theory, Hamilton's principle, and modifying the Hertz contact law. The PDE problems have been transformed into ODE equations through the utilization of the Galerkin method. Subsequently, the ordinary equations have been solved utilizing the Newmark method. A parametric study is conducted to examine the effects of various factors, such as fraction weight, GPL distribution pattern, impactor mass, radius, viscoelastic modulus, and initial velocity, on the low velocity impact response of a composite shell reinforced with GPL.

Abstract:Composite structures are susceptible to repeated low velocity impact usually occurring at different positions, which is very common but lacks of in-depth exploration. In this paper, two impact positions with the same distance from the center of the [02/902]4S composite laminates were impacted sequentially. The impact responses for four impact distances between the double positions were compared. The mechanical curves such as the impact force-time/central displacement curves and the delamination damage projected area were recorded during the tests. Experimental results demonstrated that the interference status for mechanical curves directly corresponded to the impact-induced damage modes at different impact energy. By comparison, the maximum central displacement could characterize the interference degree of double impact positions. In addition, at high impact energy with impact-induced fiber breakage, the dominant energy dissipation mode for the second impact changed from fiber damage to delamination damage with the increase of impact distance.

Abstract:This work examines the transient nonlinear oscillations of complex composite systems under mechanical pressure utilizing Reddy's theory of higher-order shear deformation plates. The analysis entails the formulation of nonlinear equations that regulate the stress and displacement fields inside the composite structure. The dynamic behavior is defined by using Hamilton's idea. The transient response of the composite system under various loading conditions is determined by deriving analytical solutions. The work offers a full knowledge of the dynamic behavior of advanced composite structures by using Reddy's higher-order shear deformation plate theory, which takes into account the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotating inertia. The intricate interplay of material properties, shape, and external force is elucidated by the nonlinearity inherent in the equations. This provides valuable information on the temporary vibrations that occur in the composite system. The work employs rigorous mathematical analysis and closed-form solutions to clarify the intricate transient dynamics of modern composite structures, providing insights into how they react to mechanical loads over time. The results enhance the overall comprehension of composite material behavior and provide useful insights for the technical design and optimization of composite structures.

Abstract:The functionally graded composite structures with viscoelastic polymers inherits the excellent performance of functionally graded composites and also possesses large damping performance, which has broad application prospects in the aerospace and mechanical engineering fields. However, due to the complexity of the structure itself, there is limited literature available on its theoretical modeling for efficient solutions. To predict its dynamic performance, a simplified dynamic model of the functionally graded composite structures with viscoelastic polymers is established. This model takes into account the displacement transfer relationship between the functional graded composite layer and the viscoelastic polymer layer. The governing differential equations are obtained by applying the Navier method and complex modulus theory. These equations are then solved using the Rayleigh–Ritz method. The validity of the theoretical model is confirmed by comparing it with existing literature and the results obtained from ANSYS software. Additionally, the model that has been developed is used to analyze how the graded index and elastic modulus of the structure, as well as its geometric parameters, affect its vibration and damping characteristics.

Abstract:<p>Dynamic failure behaviors of fully clamped and simply supported composite sandwich beams with stepwise gradient foam cores subject to low-velocity impact have been investigated experimentally. The sandwich beams with uniform foam core, positive-gradient foam core and negative-gradient foam core are designed and manufactured. The experimental results show that the mass distributions of cores have significant effect on the failure modes. The low-density foam layer at the impact end would lead to local failure mode of indentation or face fracture, while the high-density foam layer at the impact end would bring about global failure mode of combined core shear and debonding. The simply supported graded sandwich beam exhibits softening post-failure behavior, while the fully clamped graded sandwich beam displays hardening post-failure behavior. The initial strengths of fully clamped and simply supported sandwich beams with negative-gradient foam core are the highest, while the subsequent strength of the fully clamped sandwich beams with positive-gradient foam core is the highest. Among all gradient distributions of foam cores, the impact resistance of the fully clamped composite sandwich beams with negative-gradient foam cores design is the highest.</p>

On axial crushing behavior of double hat-shaped CFRP and GFRP structures

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the energy-absorbing mechanisms of composite structures subjected to quasi-static and dynamic axial crushing loads. Double hat-shaped composite tubes were prepared using carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite materials. The results indicated that these composite tubes exhibited a progressive end-crushing mode and had a comparable load-carrying capacity at a crushing velocity of 2 mm/min. When the loading rate was increased to 6.1 m/s, a 23.3% reduction in the energy absorption of the CFRP structures was observed; whereas the energy absorption of the GFRP structures remained relatively constant. A stacked-shell finite element model, which considered the effects of strain rate on intra-layer and inter-layer properties, was developed to simulate the axial crushing behavior of the CFRP and GFRP tubes. The predictions made by the finite element model were found to correlate well with the tested crushing process, force–displacement curves, and final failure mode. The mechanical properties of the composite materials were also observed to play a critical role in the energy-absorbing mechanisms, contributing to the distinct crushing responses of the CFRP and GFRP structures. The results of this study are expected to help clarify the differences in the energy-absorbing mechanisms between CFRP and GFRP tubes, thereby contributing to the crashworthiness design of composite energy-absorbing structures.

Abstract:This paper aims to evaluate the potential use of an innovative functionally graded lattice-filled composite beam composed of axial and radial graded three-dimensional lattice cores. Graded lattice filled circular beams with different graded patterns are compared with homogenous lattice filled counterparts. Graded lattice core samples are prepared using 3D printing techniques, inserted into thin-walled tubes and subjected to three-point bending loads. Then numerical models are created in Abaqus and verified against the experiments. Parametric studies find that the novel lattice-filled structure absorbs more energy but yields larger crushing force than the uniform counterpart. In addition, various parameters, like gradient parameter and filling length, thickness and yield stress of column wall, have a considerable impact on the crashworthiness of this novel structure. Finally, multi-objective optimization is performed to maximize specific energy absorption while reducing maximum impact force. Optimization results show that graded lattice-filled structures produce superior Pareto solutions than the ordinary counterparts. Especially, the specific energy absorption can be increased to 173.9% and increasing graded lattice-filled structure has the best crashworthiness, and the least decreasing graded lattice-filled structure. The functionally graded lattice core of this study provides a novel approach to design new crash-resistant energy absorber with high energy absorption capacity.

Abstract:A novel all-composite sandwich structure with S-type composite foldcore was designed and fabricated using an improved hot-press molding. Low-velocity impact tests with varying impact locations named "Node-impact" and "Base-impact" on the sandwich structure were performed via an Instron CEAST 9350 impacting machine. Experimental results showed two peaks exhibited on the histories of impact loads, where the peak value for Node-impact was larger than that of Base-impact at equal impact energy. Impact position possesses a significant influence on the impact resistance and damage mode of the composite structure. The sandwich structure achieved better impact resistance at Node-impact than Base-impact due to the strengthening of S-type composite foldcore. A user defined three-dimensional progressive damage mode was developed to predict the constitution and damage evolution of glass/epoxy fabrics, including fiber damage, matrix damage and interlaminar delamination. The predicted dynamic response and failure behavior of composite sandwich specimen agreed with experimental results.

Abstract:Journal of Sandwich Structures &Materials, Ahead of Print. This study aimed to improve the energy absorption capabilities of auxetic structures, which are used in sandwich structures in engineering. To achieve this, the study used a combination of CFRP and aluminum materials in a hybrid double arrow-head auxetic (DAHA) structure. This paper conducted experiments and simulations to analyze the mechanical properties of the hybrid DAHA structures and found that the mixture ratio of hybrid material, ply angles of CFRP laminates, and inclination angles of beams significantly influenced the energy absorption performance of the structures. Additionally, the proposed hybrid DAHA structures outperformed other control groups when the thickness ratio of CFRP was 75%. The inclination angles of beams also affected the energy absorption capacity by changing the structural void of DAHA structures. These findings offer new insights into enhancing the energy absorption capacity of hybrid auxetic structures. The proposed hybrid structures can absorb more energy by 56.4% with a lower peak crushing force comparing with the traditional metal auxetic structure. Therefore, the CFRP/Aluminum hybrid auxetic structure has a bright future in the energy absorption fields.

Abstract:Low‐velocity impact behavior of composite stiffened srructures. This paper focuses on the mechanical response and viscoelastic properties of double‐blade composite stiffened structure (DCSS) under low‐velocity impact (LVI). Firstly, the impact resistance and viscoelastic behavior of the DCSS are revealed by LVI testing at four different locations using the same initial velocity. Next, the damage morphologies at the impact locations are observed with ultrasonic A‐ and C‐scan equipment and optical microscopy. At last, the DCSS containing impact damage is implemented for axial compression and the strain values of the DCSS surface are obtained using a strain testing system to reveal its residual properties and buckling behavior. The results show that there are significant differences in the impact damage modes at the four different locations. The maximum impact resistance is observed at location D, while location A has the opposite. The DCSS has a certain viscoelastic behavior at LVI and conforms to an exponential decay model. Moreover, position B presents interface debonding damage due to stiffness discontinuities at the flange and skin bonding and severely weakens the load carrying performance of the DCSS. Highlights The impact resistance of different positions is analyzed by LVI experimental results. Viscoelastic properties exist at different impact locations and obey the exponential decay model. Impact damage alters the buckling load and residual strength of the DCSS. The damage mechanism of the triangular zone is revealed by damage morphology.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the mechanical response of double-layer aluminum foam under static and impact loading. In the first part, experimental investigations are conducted to research the static and dynamic response of aluminum foam. The mechanical response of single- and double-layer specimens is discussed. In the second part, a mesoscopic model is developed based on X-ray CT (computed tomography) images. The mesoscopic characteristics of aluminum foam cells in size, shape, and distribution are considered according to the statistical results. Simulations reveal that the presented mesoscopic model can reliably predict the mechanics of aluminum foam. At last, it conducts study on the dynamic response of the aluminum foam employing the mesoscopic model. It discusses the mesoscopic deformation mechanism of double-layer specimens under high-velocity impact. Results show that the density arrangement is critical to the dynamic crushing.
