Abstract:Learning and memory as the most important concepts in neuroscience are dependent on synaptic plasticity, which includes major changes in neurons and synapses. [ 1 ] Long-term synaptic plasticity is an important property of the central nervous system (CNS) and is commonly considered a primary mechanism for learning and memory. [ 2 , 3 ] This phenome is defined by a long-lasting, activity-dependent modification in synaptic efficacy, and can bidirectionally change synaptic strength–either enhancing (long-term potentiation [LTP]) or depressing (long-term depression). LTP of synaptic transmission was first discovered in hippocampus. [ 4 ] Hippocampal LTP has been commonly evaluated as biological indicator to evaluate learning and memory at a cellular level. [ 5 ] Wide-ranging impacts of androgens on cognitive functions and synaptic plasticity in vitro and in vivo have been described. Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) are a large class of synthetic derivatives of testosterone that have both androgenic and anabolic effects. [ 6 , 7 ] The actions of AASs in the brain are complex and depends on their interaction with androgen receptors (ARs) or estrogen receptor (ERs). [ 8 , 9 ]
