Abstract:We describe here a novel scheme for recognition of online handwritten basic characters of Bangla, an Indian script used by more than 200 million people. There are 50 basic characters in Bangla and we have used a database of 24,500 online handwritten isolated character samples written by 70 persons. Samples in this database are composed of one or more strokes and we have collected all the strokes obtained from the training samples of the 50 character classes. These strokes are manually grouped into 54 classes based on the shape similarity of the graphemes that constitute the ideal character shapes. Strokes are recognized by using hidden Markov models (HMM). One HMM is constructed for each stroke class. A second stage of classification is used for recognition of characters using stroke classification results along with 50 look-up-tables (for 50 character classes).

Abstract:Traditionally, the performance of ocr algorithms and systems is based on the recognition of isolated characters. When a system classifies an individual character, its output is typically a character label or a reject marker that corresponds to an unrecognized character. By comparing output labels with the correct labels, the number of correct recognition, substitution errors misrecognized characters, and rejects unrecognized characters are determined. Nowadays, although recognition of printed isolated characters is performed with high accuracy, recognition of handwritten characters still remains an open problem in the research arena. The ability to identify machine printed characters in an automated or a semi automated manner has obvious applications in numerous fields. Abstract:For automatic recognition of Bangla script, only a few studies are reported in the literature, which is in contrast to the role of Bangla as one of the world's major scripts. In this paper we present a new approach to online Bangla handwriting recognition and one of the first to consider cursively written words instead of isolated characters. Our method uses a sub-stroke level feature representation of the script and a writing model based on hidden Markov models. As for the latter an appropriate internal structure is crucial, we investigate different approaches to defining model structures for a highly compositional script like Bangla. In experimental evaluations of a writer independent Bangla word recognition task we show that the use of context-dependent sub-word units achieves quite promising results and significantly outperforms alternatively structured models.

Abstract:A novel hidden Markov model (HMM) for recognition of handwritten Oriya numerals is proposed. The novelty lies in the fact that the HMM states are not determined a priori, but are determined automatically based on a database of handwritten numeral images. A handwritten numeral is assumed to be a string of several shape primitives. These are in fact the states of the proposed HMM and are found using certain mixture distributions. One HMM is constructed for each numeral. To classify an unknown numeral image, its class conditional probability for each HMM is computed. The classification scheme has been tested on a large handwritten Oriya numeral database developed recently. The classification accuracy is 95.89% and 90.50% for training and test sets respectively.

Abstract:This paper presents a hybrid approach to recognition of handwritten basic characters of Bangla, the official script of Bangladesh and second most popular script of India. This is a 50 class recognition problem and the proposed recognition approach consists of two stages. In the first stage, a shape feature vector computed from two-directional-view-based strokes of an input character image is used by a hidden Markov model (HMM). This HMM defines its states in a data-driven or adaptive approach. The statistical distribution of the shapes of strokes present in the available training database is modelled as a mixture distribution and each component is a state of the present HMM. Abstract:This article describes a recent effort for database creation and recognition of online handwritten isolated basic characters of Bangla, the second most popular script of the Indian subcontinent. It describes a scheme for extraction of sub-strokes from the online samples of handwritten Bangla characters, which are significantly cursive in shapes. The proposed recognition scheme includes a new feature vector to be computed for each sub-stroke. The recognition performance of the test samples of the present database is evaluated separately on two classifiers -- a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based classifier and a nearest-neighbour classifier based on Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). The second classifier outperforms the HMM-based classifier for the present test set.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel approach to automatic recognition of handprinted Bangla (an Indian script) numerals. A modified Topology Adaptive Self-Organizing Neural Network is proposed to extract a vector skeleton from a binary numeral image. Simple heuristics are considered to prune artifacts, if any, in such a skeletal shape. Certain topological and structural features like loops, junctions, positions of terminal nodes, etc. are used along with a hierarchical tree classifier to classify handwritten numerals into smaller subgroups. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) networks are then employed to uniquely classify the numerals belonging to each subgroup. The system is trained using a sample data set of 1800 numerals and we have obtained 93.26% correct recognition rate and 1.71% rejection on a separate test set of another 7760 samples. In a recently published work, chain code histogram features were used for this classification task and obtained 92.14% accuracy on a test set of Bangla basic character image samples. Abstract:In this article, we describe a prototype system for recognition of online handwritten cursive words of Bangla, a script used by more than 200 million people of India and Bangladesh, two neighboring countries of Asia. To the best of our knowledge, in the literature, there does not exist any work on recognition of such online Bangla cursive words. Here, we propose an analytic recognition approach, which involves segmentation of the input Bangla word. Modified quadratic discriminant function classifier is used for recognition of segmented strokes based on a chain code histogram based feature vector. Finally, an input word is recognized by a verification module, which uses a set of rules for construction of characters from strokes. We carefully selected a set of 100 Bangla words such that each basic character and vowel modifier of this script occurs at least in two words. A total of 10000 handwritten online word samples provided by 50 native Bengali writers of different groups with respect to age, education, sex and income have been used in the present study.

Abstract:Unconstrained offline handwriting recognition is a challenging task in the areas of document analysis and pattern recognition. In recent years, to sufficiently exploit the supervisory information hidden in document images, much effort has been made to integrate multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) in either a hybrid or a tandem fashion into hidden Markov models (HMMs). However, due to the weak learnability of MLPs, the learnt features are not necessarily optimal for subsequent recognition tasks. In this paper, we propose a deep architecture-based tandem approach for unconstrained offline handwriting recognition. In the proposed model, deep belief networks are adopted to learn the compact representations of sequential data, while HMMs are applied for (sub-)word recognition. We evaluate the proposed model on two publicly available datasets, i.e., RIMES and IFN/ENIT, which are based on Latin and Arabic languages respectively, and one dataset collected by ourselves called Devanagari (an Indian script). Extensive experiments show the advantage of the proposed model, especially over the MLP-HMMs tandem approaches.

Abstract:In this article, we present our recent study of offline recognition of handwritten numerals of three Indian scripts -- Devanagari, Bangla and Oriya. Here, we propose a novel approach to combination of multiple MLP classifiers with varying number of hidden nodes based on Adaboost technique. In this recognition study, we used Zernike moment features of different orders. We obtained classification results corresponding to a number of orders of this moment function and the best classification result for each script was obtained when the feature vector consists of moment values up to the order 8. Seventy five such stroke classes have been identified on the basis of the varying handwriting styles present in the character database. Abstract:A recognition system for handwritten Bangla numerals and its application to automatic letter sorting machine for Bangladesh Post is presented. The system consists of preprocessing, feature extraction, recognition and integration. Based on the theories of principal component analysis (PCA), two novel approaches are proposed for recognizing handwritten Bangla numerals. One is the image reconstruction recognition approach, and the other is the direction feature extraction approach combined with PCA and SVM. By examining the handwritten Bangla numeral data captured from real Bangladesh letters, the experimental results show that our proposed approaches are effective. To meet performance requirements of automatic letter sorting machine, we integrate the results of the two proposed approaches with one conventional PCA approach. It has been found that the recognition result achieved by the integrated system is more reliable than that by one method alone. The average recognition rate, error rate and reliability achieved by the integrated system are 95.05%, 0.93% and 99.03%, respectively. Experiments demonstrate that the integrated system also meets speed requirement.

Abstract:Handwritten digit or numeral recognition is one of the classical issues in the area of pattern recognition and has seen tremendous advancement because of the recent wide availability of computing resources. Plentiful works have already done on English, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese handwritten script. Some work on Bangla also have been done but there is space for development. From that angle, in this paper, an architecture has been implemented which achieved the validation accuracy of 99.44% on BHAND dataset and outperforms Alexnet and Inception V3 architecture. Beside digit recognition, digit generation is another field which has recently caught the attention of the researchers though not many works have been done in this field especially on Bangla. In this paper, a Semi-Supervised Generative Adversarial Network or SGAN has been applied to generate Bangla handwritten numerals and it successfully generated Bangla digits.
