Abstract:Recently, polymer field-effect transistors have gone through rapid development. Nevertheless, charge transport mechanism and structure-property relationship are less understood. Here we use strong electron-deficient benzodifurandione-based poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (BDPPV) as polymer backbone and develop six BDPPV-based polymers (BDPPV-C1 to C6) with various side-chain branching positions to systematically study the side-chain effect on device performance. All the polymers exhibited ambient-stable n-type transporting behaviors with the highest electron mobility of up to 1.40 cm 2 V-1 s(-1). The film morphologies and microstructures of all the six polymers were systematically investigated. Our results demonstrate that the interchain pi-pi stacking distance decreases as moving the branching position away from polymer backbones, and an unprecedentedly close pi-pi stacking distance down to 3.38 angstrom is obtained for BDPPV-C4 to C6. Nonetheless, closer pi-pi stacking distance does not always correlate with higher electron mobility. Polymer crystallinity, thin film disorder, and polymer packing conformation, which all influenced by side-chain branching position, are proved to show significant influence on device performance. Our study not only reveals that pi-pi stacking distance is not the decisive factor on carrier mobility in conjugated polymers but also demonstrates that side-chain branching position engineering is a powerful strategy to modulate and balance these factors in conjugated polymers.
Unraveling the Main Chain and Side Chain Effects on Thin Film Morphology and Charge Transport in Quinoidal Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Three series of low-bandgap polymers based on a novel quinoidal para-azaquinodimethane (p-AQM) unit are devised and synthesized, enabling an in-depth study of the impact of structural factors such as polymer main chain, branching point of the side chain, and the length of the branch chains on the thin film morphologies and charge transport properties. Morphological studies reveal that the polymers composed of larger repeating units exhibit a stronger tendency to form edge-on lamella. On the other hand, altering the side chain structures of polymers with the same main chain configuration indicates that the branching point position has a more deterministic impact than the branch chain length on the interchain interactions and the crystallite orientation. These results demonstrate a compound odd-even effect of the branching point on the chain packing and morphology, which correlates well with the corresponding field effect transistor performances. The polymer with the branching point at the fourth carbon displays the highest charge carrier mobility over 1.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), concurrent with a bimodal texture. This study provides a comprehensive description of the correlations between polymer structures, thin film morphology, and device performances, providing a clear path to desirable bimodal thin film texture for charge transport.

Abstract:The aggregation behavior and solid-state microstructures of conjugated polymers play an important role in optoelectronic properties and device performances. Adaption of classical polymer theory and phenomenological discussion of the structure were commonly applied to unravel the nature of aggregation. However, the broadened molecular weight distribution and the discrepancy in interactions between polymer backbones and alkyl chains increase the difficulty in pinpointing the nature of the aggregation mechanism and behavior. Here, four conjugated polymers were developed to construct the relationship between the polymer conformation and the aggregation behavior. The effect of the interunit torsion and the flexibility differences of the conjugated chains on the aggregation behaviors in solutions was investigated in detail. On this basis, a model combined with supramolecular polymerization and classical polymer theory brought a new perspective of thermodynamics to unravel the aggregation process in solution. The aggregation equilibrium inclined toward short-range/long-range pi-stacks with planar/torsional units, and the disaggregated species inclined toward dispersed chains/coils with a rigid/flexible backbone. Furthermore, the aggregation structures were inherited to the solid phase, resulting in excellent electronic properties for the planar and rigid polymers and strong domain-regulation ability for the torsional and flexible polymers. Our investigation pioneers the introduction of supramolecular aggregation theory into the study of the aggregation behavior of conjugated polymers in solution, which sheds light on the nature of the aggregation of conjugated polymers from a thermodynamic perspective, constructs a landscape for the aggregation process, and also provides guidance for the structure design and the selection of modulation methods matching the structure and performance requirements.

Abstract:Highly ordered nanostructures assembled from conjugated polymers have great potential for probing fundamental structure-property relationships, as well as boosting the charge transport performance. To date, the effect of solution-state aggregation on crystallization and charge transport in conjugated polymers is still unclear and in need of precise description at the molecular level. In this work, we report a systematic study of solution-state aggregation on crystallization and charge transport in BDOPV-based conjugated polymers through side chain engineering. Detailed analysis of crystal packing structures of conjugated polymers reveals that intermolecular displacements are substantially modified in order to minimize steric hindrance caused by the alkyl side chains. Moreover, subtle differences in side chain chemical structures play a vital role in regulating solution-state aggregation, and thus crystalline domain sizes in both microwires and thin films. Farther branched side chain leads to larger polymer aggregates in solution and therefore larger crystalline domains in solid films. Subsequently, an increase in electron mobility is obtained with the highest mobility values surpassing 10 cm2 V−1 s−1. This work unravels that the modification of the side chains is an efficient strategy for fine-tuning the interchain organization of conjugated polymers from solution to solid state.

Abstract:Clear structure characterization is the basics of performance analysis, which is difficult for the complex structure of amorphous conjugated polymers. In this work, we have given solid evidence in copolymer of fluorene and carbazole that the carbazole with racemic branched alkyl side chain tend to form chain entanglement in high concentration of solution and thin film. The single crystal structure of two racemic carbazole dimer with stronger π-π interaction, which 1HNMR peaks is well corresponding to that of racemic polymer at high concentration and proves the existence of chain entanglement in racemic polymer. The chain entanglement segment with high molecular weight and low energy level (estimated as about 3% and absent in the chiral polymer) have enriched at the interface during film fabrication, which induce strong charge trapping and excited state quenching during the working of optoelectronic devices. These chain entanglement would be well restrained by chiral substitution, which induce one order of magnitudes improvement of device brightness and efficiency. These results indicate that the chain entangle at interface and charge trapping play the key role of bad device performance, which help to explore the instability origin and performance promotion.

Abstract:Excellent progress has been made in the optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers by controlling solution-state aggregation. However, due to the wide variety and complex structures of conjugated polymers, it is still challenging to fully understand the complex aggregation process and microstructures both in solution and in the solid state. This Perspective focuses on the chain conformations and the aggregation of conjugated polymers in solution. We discuss the factors in detail which affect solution-state aggregation and microstructures from the perspective of polymer physics in solutions, including chemical structures and environmental conditions. Based on the understanding of multiple interactions of conjugated polymers in solution, strategies to regulate solid-state microstructures and obtain high-performance polymer-based devices from solution-state aggregation are summarized.

Abstract:The mesoscopic solution-state aggregation plays a dominant role in the multilevel self-assembly of conjugated polymers. However, its effect on solid-state microstructures and the electrical performance of conjugated polymers is still a puzzle due to the limitation of characterization techniques. Herein, we have developed four isoindigo-based conjugated polymers with varied alkyl chains to reveal the relationship between solution-state aggregation, molecular doping process, and charge transport properties. For the solution-state aggregation, the photophysical and microstructural characterizations were adopted to explore the solvated aggregation structures of these four polymers, where well-differentiated aggregate sizes were observed. IIDDT-C3 showed small solvated aggregate sizes but excellent aggregate connectivity in solutions. The characterization of the solid-state microstructure demonstrated that IIDDT-C3 had ideal crystalline solid-state microstructures with densely fibrillar morphology, which endowed IIDDT-C3 with the highest electrical conductivity up to 531 +/- 50 S cm(-1) after doping among these four polymers. Our work provides molecular guidance for clarifying the structure-performance relationship between aggregation structures and the electrical properties of the doped conjugated polymers with different alkyl chains. Abstract:The intrinsically rigid and limited strain of most conjugated polymers has encouraged us to optimize the extensible properties of conjugated polymers. Herein, learning from the hydrogen bonds in glucose, which were facilitated to the toughness enhancement of cellulose, we introduced interchain hydrogen bonds to polydiarylfluorene by amide-containing side chains. Through tuning the copolymerization ratio, we systematically investigated their influence on the hierarchical condensed structures, rheology behavior, tensile performances, and optoelectronic properties of conjugated polymers. Compared to the reference copolymers with a low ratio of amide units, copolymers with 30% and 40% amide units present a feature of the shear-thinning process that resembled the non-Newtonian fluid, which was enabled by the interchain dynamic hydrogen bonds. Besides, we developed a practical and universal method for measuring the intrinsic mechanical properties of conjugated polymers. We demonstrated the significant impact of hydrogen bonds in solution gelation, material crystallization, and thin film stretchability. Impressively, the breaking elongation for P4 was even up to ~30%, which confirmed the partially enhanced film ductility and toughness due to the increased amide groups. Furthermore, polymer light-emitting devices (PLEDs) based on these copolymers presented comparable performances and stable electroluminescence (EL). Thin films of these copolymers also exhibited random laser emission with the threshold as low as 0.52 μ J/cm 2 , suggesting the wide prospective application in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers came to an unprecedented epoch that the charge transport is limited only by small disorder within aggregated domains. Accurate evaluation of transport performance is thus vital to optimizing further molecule design. Yet, the routine method by means of the conventional field-effect transistors may not satisfy such a requirement. Here, it is shown that the extrinsic effects of Schottky barrier, access transport through semiconductor bulk, and concurrent ambipolar conduction seriously influence transport analysis. The planar transistors incorporating ohmic contacts free of access and ambipolar conduction afford an ideal access to charge transport. It is found, however, that only the planar transistors operating in low-field regime are reliable to explore the inherent transport properties due to the energetic disorder lowering by the lateral field induced by high drain voltage. This work opens up a robust approach to comprehend the delicate charge transport in conjugated polymers so as to develop high-performance semiconducting polymers for promising plastic electronics.

Abstract:The influence of the chemical: structure of conjugated polymers on the nanophase separation and device performance in fullerene-based solar cells has been widely studied, while this is, less investigated in non-fullerene solar cells. In this work, we design three conjugated polymers With-different length of side chains, and we find that the length of side chains has little influence on the quantum efficiencies of non-fullerene solar cells. As a comparison, the length of side chains has a significant effect on the quantum efficiencies of fullerene-based solar cells. This indicates that morphology of the blended thin films in non-fullerene solar, cells is rather independent of the length of the donor side chains; and the mechanism for morphology evolution in the non-fullerene system is completely different from that in the fullerene system. Our conclusion is confirmed by a variety of advanced characterization techniques. The studies reveal that in blended thin films based on the non-fullerene material the donor polymers with different side chains have a Similar coherence length of pi-pi stacking, crystal size and domain purity, giving rise-to similar internal quantum efficiency and power conversion efficiency of the solar cells.

Abstract:Charge transport in conjugated polymers is affected not only by the static structure but also the dynamics of backbone segments. A series of regiorandom poly(3-alkylthiophenes) (P3ATs) with 6–12 alkyl carbons per side chain are studied by the all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. By investigating the effect of temperature and side chain length on the static structure, we identify that the peak of neutron scattering at q ∼ 0.42 Å–1 is from the backbone’s edge-to-edge packing along the side-chain direction and shifts to the lower q with the increasing side chain length. The peak at q ∼ 1.35 Å–1 is contributed by both the intrachain side chain-side chain correlation and the interchain correlation on the face-to-face stacking direction. In addition, the increase in side chain length can lead to faster backbone dynamics. The farther the carbon atom is from the backbone, the faster it moves. Based on the dynamic analysis, the faster motion of the backbone is mainly attributed to the last three atoms close to the end of the alkyl side chain, which have distinct dynamics compared with the carbons in the inner part of side chains close to the rigid backbone.

Abstract:Abstract It remains challenging to understand the structural evolution of conjugated polymers from single chains to solvated aggregates and film microstructures, although it underpins the performance of optoelectrical devices fabricated via the mainstream solution processing method. With several ensemble visual measurements, here we unravel the morphological evolution process of a model system of isoindigo-based conjugated molecules, including the hidden molecular assembly pathways, the mesoscale network formation, and their unorthodox chain dependence. Short chains show rigid chain conformations forming discrete aggregates in solution, which further grow to form a highly ordered film that exhibits poor electrical performance. In contrast, long chains exhibit flexible chain conformations, creating interlinked aggregates networks in solution, which are directly imprinted into films, forming interconnective solid-state microstructure with excellent electrical performance. Visualizing multi-level assembly structures of conjugated molecules provides a deep understanding of the inheritance of assemblies from solution to solid-state, accelerating the optimization of device fabrication.

Abstract:In the past few decades, conjugated polymers have aroused extensive interest in organic electronic applications. The electrical performance of conjugated polymers has a close relationship with their backbone conformation. The conformation of the polymer backbone strongly affects the πelectron delocalization along polymer chains, the energy band gap, interchain interactions, and further affects charge transport properties. To realize a rigid coplanar backbone that usually possesses efficient intrachain charge transport properties and enhanced π–π stackings, such conformation control becomes a useful strategy to achieve high‐performance (semi)conducting polymers. This minireview summarizes the most important polymer structures through conformation control at the molecular level, and then divides these rigid coplanar conjugated polymers into three categories: 1) noncovalent interactions locked conjugated polymers; 2) double‐bond linked conjugated polymers; 3) ladder conjugated polymers. The effect of the conformation control on physical nature, optoelectronic properties, and their device performance is also discussed, as well as the challenges of chemical synthesis and structural characterization.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers have attracted extensive attention in numerous research fields because of their exceptional photoelectric properties and distinctive solution processing capabilities. The conformation of the chain and the structure of the condensed state in solution are closely related to various factors, such as concentration and solvent. Concentration, as a significant external parameter, plays a crucial role in the self‐assembly and formation of crystalline structures in conjugated polymers. It also affects the properties of the solution, the structure of the membrane, and the performance of the fabricated devices. Recently, there have been an increasing number of studies conducted from the perspective of solution concentration. Therefore, it is important to comprehensively summarize the effect of concentration on the transition process of chain structure from solution to film, as well as the impact of concentration on the performance of related devices. In this review, we summarize the effects of concentration on the chain motion, particle size, ordered structure, and photoelectric properties of conjugated polymers in solutions and thin films, as well as on device efficiency. This provides a unique perspective on the fundamental characteristics of conjugated polymers, which can assist in the development and improvement of optoelectronic devices.

Design Rules to Maximize Charge-Carrier Mobility along Conjugated Polymer Chains

Abstract:The emergence of polymeric materials displaying high charge-carrier mobility values despite poor interchain structural order has spawned a renewal of interest in the identification of structure-property relationships pertaining to the transport of charges along conjugated polymer chains and the subsequent design of optimized architectures. Here, we present the results of intrachain charge transport simulations obtained by applying a robust surface hopping algorithm to a phenomenological Hamiltonian parametrized against first-principles simulations. Conformational effects are shown to provide a clear signature in the temperature-dependent charge-carrier mobility that complies with recent experimental observations. We further contrast against molecular crystals the evolution with electronic bandwidth and electron-phonon interactions of the room-temperature mobility in polymers, showing that intrachain charge-carrier mobility values in excess of 100 cm(2)/(V s) can be achieved through a proper chemical engineering of the backbones.
Chain-Assisted Charge Transport in Semicrystalline Conjugated Polymers

Abstract:Charge-carrier transport in a paradigmatic semicrystalline polymer semiconductor (P3HT) is important for both fundamental understanding and applications. In samples with enhanced structural disorder due to ad-hoc point defects, the mobility displays rich behavior as a function of electric field (F) and temperature (T). At low T, the mobility increases with the applied field, but upon further increasing T, the field-dependence becomes shallower. Eventually, at the highest T considered, the slope changes sign and the mobility then decreases with the field. This phenomenon can be interpreted with our model as a result of the competition between intrachain conductive-like transport (which slows on increasing F) and interchain activated transport (which is faster at higher F). The former is controlling at high T where interchain hops are strictly limited to nearest-neighbor monomers on adjacent chains. At low T, instead, interchain hops to distant sites are allowed and control the positive correlation of the mobility with the field.

Abstract:Side chains of conjugated polymers (CPs) have played a vital role in the regulation of solution processibility and semiconducting performance. Herein, carbosilane side chains, which manifest the advantages of low-cost and facile synthesis as compared to the common alkyl ones, were employed to regulate the aggregation behaviors and charge transport properties of isoindigo-based polymers. Three polymers, IIDSiC 12 , IIDSiC 8 , and IIDC 12 , with carbosilane side chains of varying bulkiness and alkyls as the control were synthesized via direct arylation polymerization. Anisotropic one-dimensional pre-aggregates of different aspect ratios were developed in solution, as disclosed by solution small-angle neutron scattering, which further determined the order of the microstructure in bar-coated films for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). It is noteworthy that the relatively large radius (20.5 Å) and moderate aspect ratio (∼20) of IIDSiC 12 solution aggregates ensured a solid-state microstructure of the highest order, as evidenced by well-aligned fiber-like morphology and the largest range of packing order. As a result, OTFTs based on IIDSiC 12 achieved the maximum saturation electron mobility up to 4.10 cm2 V–1 s–1 with a reliability factor of 81%, which is among the highest mobilities of n-type CPs. The results reported here may encourage the easier synthesis of high mobility CPs using the carbosilane side chain engineering.

Abstract:The nature of interchain π-system contacts, and their relationship to hole transport, are elucidated for the high-mobility, noncrystalline conjugated polymer C16-IDTBT by the application of scanning tunneling microscopy, molecular dynamics, and quantum chemical calculations. The microstructure is shown to favor an unusual packing motif in which paired chains cross-over one another at near-perpendicular angles. By linking to mesoscale microstructural features, revealed by coarse-grained molecular dynamics and previous studies, and performing simulations of charge transport, it is demonstrated that the high mobility of C16-IDTBT can be explained by the promotion of a highly interconnected transport network, stemming from the adoption of perpendicular contacts at the nanoscale, in combination with fast intrachain transport.

Abstract:The multi-level microstructure of conjugated polymers is the most critical parameter determining the charge transport property in field-effect transistors (FETs). However, controlling the hierarchical microstructures and the structural evolution remains a significant challenge. In this perspective, we discuss the key aspects of multi-level microstructures of conjugated polymers towards high-performance FETs. We highlight the recent progress in the molecular structures, solution-state aggregation, and polymer crystal structures, representing the multi-level microstructures of conjugated polymers. By tuning polymer hierarchical microstructures, we attempt to provide several guidelines for developing high-performance polymer FETs and polymer electronics.
