Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has gained increasing interest due to its unique and excellent properties. To improve its inherent drawbacks and perfect its catalytic performance, many convenient and facile strategies have been developed, including metal and non-metal modifications. However, the low content in nature and the leaching of toxic metals in photocorrosion have been two critical obstacles for metal-based photocatalysts in practical applications. Therefore, it is increasingly urgent to develop and design efficient and stable non-metal modified g-C3N4-based photocatalysts. Here, this review begins with a brief presentation of the unique characteristics of g-C3N4. Then, to maintain the metal-free nature of g-C3N4, the four most frequently used modification strategies are discussed, including vacancies introduction, doping with non-metal elements, modifying with non-metal quantum dots and coupling with other semiconductors. In addition, the latest developments of non-metal modified g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for energy-related and environmental applications are systematically discussed. In the end, both the current development bottlenecks and future development directions of g-C3N4-based metal-free photocatalysts are presented. Basically, we highlight the unique properties of completely non-metal modified g-C3N4, which has positive implications for the sustainable development of g-C3N4-based non-metal photocatalysts. Furthermore, we hope that it can spark new ideas and present promising directions to design metal-free photocatalysts for energy-related and environmental applications.

Abstract:Due to the excessive use of traditional fossil fuels to bring a lot of harm to the environment, this prompted us to study a new renewable and Eco-friendly energy source. Among numerous new energy sources, solar energy is currently one of the hotspots due to its environmental and renewable advantages. Therefore, photocatalytic technology using solar energy has become one of the most promising research directions. So far, a major focus of photocatalytic technology is to find a stable and efficient photocatalyst. As a metal free conjugated polymer, graphite nitride carbon has become a research hotspot in the field of photocatalysis. Now, graphitic carbon nitride has been applied in many aspects of photocatalytic, but due to the shortcomings of graphitic carbon nitride itself has led to its limitations. Thus, researchers have optimized it through doping, heterostructure construction, morphology control, and defect engineering. The optimized graphite carbon nitride has wider application value.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), with facile synthesis, unique structure, high stability, and low cost, has been the hotspot in the field of photocatalysis. However, the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 is still unsatisfactory due to insufficient capture of visible light, low surface area, poor electronic conductivity, and fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Thus, different modification strategies have been developed to improve its performance. In this review, the properties and preparation methods of g-C3N4 are systematically introduced, and various modification approaches, including morphology control, elemental doping, heterojunction construction, and modification with nanomaterials, are discussed. Moreover, photocatalytic applications in energy and environmental sustainability are summarized, such as hydrogen generation, CO2 reduction, and degradation of contaminants in recent years. Finally, concluding remarks and perspectives on the challenges, and suggestions for exploiting g-C3N4-based photocatalysts are presented. This review will deepen the understanding of the state of the art of g-C3N4, including the fabrication, modification, and application in energy and environmental sustainability.

Abstract:Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride , g-C3N4 , is a new organic photocatalyst with semiconductor property and proper band gap of 2.7eV,which possesses high thermal and chemical stability. In this paper,the structure,physicochemical properties and preparation methods of g-C3N4 are reviewed. As the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 is generally low,the methods to make it an effective photocatalyst are summarized,including texture modification,elements doping and constructing heterojunction with other materials,copolymerization and sulfur-mediated function. In addition,the applications of g-C3N4 for photocatalytic water splitting and degradation of organic water pollutants under visible light are discussed. At the end,it can be concluded that the developing tendency of g-C3N4 as a photocatalyst is exploring and further optimizing the preparation and modification methods to improve its photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Since Fujishima and Honda demonstrated the photoelectrochemical water splitting on TiO2 photoanode and Pt counter electrode, photocatalysis has been considered as one of the most promising technologies for solving both the problems of environmental pollution and energy shortage. This process can effectively use solar energy, the most abundant energy resource on the earth, to drive various catalytic reactions, such as water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic pollutant degradation, and organic synthesis, for energy generation and environmental purification. Except for the various metal-based semiconductors, such as metal oxides, metal sulfides, and metal oxynitrides, developed for photocatalysis, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has attracted significant attention in the recent years because of its earth abundancy, non-toxicity, good stability, and relatively narrow band gap (2.7 eV) for visible light response. However, g-C3N4 suffers from insufficient absorption of visible light in the solar spectrum and rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, thus resulting in low photocatalytic activity. Until now, various strategies have been developed to enhance the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4, including element doping, nanostructure and heterostructure design, and co-catalyst decoration. Among these methods, element doping has been found to be very effective for adjusting the unique electronic and molecular structures of g-C3N4, which could significantly expand the range of photoresponse under visible light and improve the charge separation. Especially, non-metal doping has been well investigated frequently to improve the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4. The non-metal dopants commonly used for the doping of g-C3N4 include oxygen (O), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), boron (B), and halogen (F, CI, Br, I) and also carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) (for self-doping), as they are easily accessible and can be introduced into the g-C3N4 framework through different physical and chemical synthetic methods. In this review article, the structural and optical properties of g-C3N4 is introduced first, followed by a brief introduction to the modification of g-C3N4 as photocatalysts. Then, the progress in the non-metal doped g-C3N4 with improved photocatalytic activity is reviewed in detail, with the photocatalytic mechanisms presented for easy understanding of the fundamentals of photocatalysis and for guiding in the design of novel g-C3N4 photocatalysts. Finally, the prospects of the modification of g-C3N4 for further advances in photocatalysis is presented.

Abstract:As a metal-free polymer, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has spurred extensive consideration over their inorganic counterparts due to the unique physical and chemical properties. However, the low specific surface area, high charge recombination rate and insufficient light absorption limit its application in the field of photocatalysis. Sulfur doping has been demonstrated as an efficient strategy for to promote light absorption and radiative carrier separation. On the basis of sulfur-doped carbon nitride, many of its modified composites have been synthesized and applied in photocatalysis, and have achieved dazzling results. Here, we introduce the basic properties of sulfur doped carbon nitride and its preparation method, and then discuss the effective method of controlling the introduction of sulfur doped g-C 3 N 4 . In addition, the achievement of sulfur doped g-C 3 N 4 for several applications, including water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, organic compounds degradation, inorganic matter transformation, nitrogen fixation and bacteria disinfection, were comprehensively reviewed. Finally, outstanding challenges and prospective perspectives are discussed, which might provide a new idea for the photocatalysts design for photocatalytic activity improvement.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is always a research hotspot as a metal-free visible-light-responsive photocatalyst, in the field of solar energy conversion (hydrogen-production by water splitting). This critical review summarizes the recent progress in the design and syntheses of two-dimensional (2D) g-C3N4 and g-C3N4-based nanocomposites, covering (1) the modifications of organic carbon nitrogen precursors, such as by heat treatment, metal or metal-free atoms doping, and modifications with organic functional groups, (2) the influencing factors for the formation of 2D g-C3N4 process, including the calcination temperature and protective atmosphere, etc. (3) newly 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets prepared from pristine raw materials and bulk g-C3N4, and the combination of 2D g-C3N4 with other 2D semiconductors or metal atoms as a cocatalyst, and (4) the structures and characteristics of each type of 2D g-C3N4 systems, together with their optical absorption band structures and interfacial charge transfers. In addition, the first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculation of the g-C3N4 system has been summarized, and this review provides an insightful outlook on the development of 2D g-C3N4 photocatalysts. The comprehensive review is concluded with a summary and future perspective. Moreover, some exciting viewpoints on the challenges, and future directions of 2D g-C3N4 photocatalysts are discussed and highlighted in this review. This review can open a new research avenue for the preparation of 2D g-C3N4 photocatalysts with good performances.

Abstract:Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4) and various carbon materials have experienced a renaissance as viable alternates in photocatalysis due to their captivating metal‐free features, favorable photoelectric properties, and economic adaptabilities. Although numerous efforts have focused on the integration of both materials with optimized photocatalytic performance in recent years, the direct parameters for this emerging enhancement are not fully summarized yet. Fully understanding the synergistic effects between g‐C3N4 and carbon materials on photocatalytic action is vital to further development of metal‐free semiconductors in future studies. Here, recent advances of carbon/g‐C3N4 hybrids on various photocatalytic applications are reviewed. The dominant governing factors by inducing carbon into g‐C3N4 photocatalysts with involving photocatalytic mechanism are highlighted. Five typical carbon‐induced enhancement effects are mainly discussed here, i.e., local electric modification, band structure tailoring, multiple charge carrier activation, chemical group functionalization, and abundant surface‐modified engineering. Photocatalytic performance of carbon‐induced g‐C3N4 photocatalysts for addressing directly both the renewable energy storage and environmental remediation is also summarized. Finally, perspectives and ongoing challenges encountered in the development of metal‐free carbon‐induced g‐C3N4 photocatalysts are presented.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalytic technology has become one of the most important means to solve the current energy shortage and environmental pollution. Compared with the traditional photocatalysts, graphite carbon nitride has a wider range of light-harvesting and more stable physical and chemical properties. However, traditional thermally induced polymerization of nitrogen-containing precursors produces the melon-based carbon nitride solids with an amorphous or semi-crystalline structure, resulting in low conductivity and moderate photocatalytic activity. Recently, crystalline carbon nitride has attracted more and more attention in improving photocatalytic performance. Some significant progress regarding crystalline carbon nitride for the preparation of solar-fuel and environmental purification has also been made. This review describes the recent advances in the design and synthesis of crystalline carbon nitride photocatalysts. A brief description of the unique physical and chemical properties of crystalline carbon nitride was given. Later, the synthetic and modification strategies are being introduced. Then, the photocatalytic application of crystalline carbon nitride was discussed, mainly including photocatalytic H2 production, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the challenges and future directions of crystalline carbon nitride photocatalysts are briefly introduced.

Abstract:Owing to their distinct collaboration nature, high atom usage, and high catalytic performance, single-atom catalysts have become most dynamically studied in various catalytic reactions . Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), as one of the most promising two-dimensional supports for stable immobilization of single-atom metals, has received extensive investigations. In this review, the recent developments of g-C 3 N 4 -supported single-atom photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution are summarized, with the metal-support interactions and structure regulations for stable and efficient catalysis being highlighted. Finally, the difficulties and potentials for future development of g-C 3 N 4 -supported single-atom materials in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution are proposed.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a remarkable semiconductor catalyst that has attracted widespread attention as a visible light photo-responsive, metal-free, low-cost photocatalytic material. Pristine g-C3N4 suffers fast recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, low surface area, and insufficient visible light absorption, resulting in low photocatalytic efficiency. This review presents the recent progress, perspectives, and persistent challenges in the development of g-C3N4-based photocatalytic materials. Several approaches employed to improve the visible light absorption of the materials including metal and non-metal doping, co-doping, and heterojunction engineering have been extensively discussed. These approaches, in general, were found to decrease the material’s bandgap, increase the surface area, reduce charge carrier recombination, and promote visible light absorption, thereby enhancing the overall photocatalytic performance. The material has been widely used for different applications such as photocatalytic hydrogen production, water splitting, CO2 conversion, and water purification. The work has also identified various limitations and weaknesses associated with the material that hinders its maximum utilization under visible illumination and presented state-of-the-art solutions that have been reported recently. The presented in this review would add an invaluable contribution to photocatalysis research and facilitate the development of efficient visible light-responsive semiconducting materials.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g–C3N4)–based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts have recently attracted numerous research attention for solar energy conversion and environmental remediation. Benefited from the features of highly effective separation and transfer rate of photocarriers, well visible light responsive ability and spatially separated redox reactive sites, g–C3N4–based Z-scheme heterostructure shows significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. This review summarizes and highlights recent research progress in g–C3N4–based Z-scheme photocatalysts including construction of 2D-2D coupling interfaces, fabrication of hierarchical microstructures, introduction of defects and heteroatoms, design of dual Z-scheme, as well as exploration of the plasmonic and photothermal performances. Moreover, the recent photocatalytic applications advance of g-C3N4 based Z-scheme photocatalysts in the fields of water splitting, CO2 reduction and pollutant degradation were also summarized. Finally, the existing challenges and perspectives of g–C3N4–based Z-scheme photocatalyst are discussed and further bring about new opportunities for future research.

Abstract:g-C3N4 have been widely used in the fields of photocatalytic hydrogen production, photocatalytic degradation of dyes and oxidative degradation of toxic gases due to their excellent performance. It has attracted extensive attention in recent years due to its highly efficient photocatalytic capacity of hydrogen generation, water oxidation, carbon dioxide reduction and degradation of organic pollutants. Because of the abundant carbon and nitrogen composition of the earth, large-scale production and industrial applications of this material are possible. The modification of this material makes its performance more excellent so that this new material can obtain a steady stream of vitality. These outstanding works have become important materials and milestones on the road to mankind’s photocatalytic hydrogen production. This review will begin with the basic idea of designing, synthesizing and improving g-C3N4 based photocatalytic materials, and introduce the latest development of g-C3N4 photocatalysts in hydrogen production from four aspects of controlling the carbon/nitrogen ratio, morphology, element doping and heterojunction structure of g-C3N4 materials.

Abstract:Semiconductors with visible light catalytic characteristics can realize the degradation of pollutants, CO2 reduction, and hydrogen preparation in sunlight. They have huge application value in the fields of environmental repair and green energy. Graphite phase nitride (g-C3N4, CN) is widely used in various fields such as photocatalytic degradation of pollutants due to its suitable gap width, easy preparation, low cost, fast visible light response, and rich surface activity sites. However, the absorption rate of ordinary CN on visible light is low, and the carriers are easy to recombination, making the lower optical catalytic activity. Therefore, in order to improve the photocatalytic characteristics of the CN, it is necessary to make the surface modification. This article first introduces several main methods for the current surface modification of CN, including size regulation, catalyst embedding, defect introduction, heterostructure construction, etc., and then summarizes the optical catalytic application and related mechanisms of CN. Finally, some challenges and development prospects of CN in preparation and photocatalytic applications are proposed.

Abstract:With the acceleration of industrialization, energy shortage and environmental pollution are becoming more and more serious. It is urgent to develop green and sustainable new energy. Photocatalytic technology, especially the use of solar energy to convert chemical energy, has attracted much attention due to its environmental friendliness and sustainability. As an excellent photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) has emerged rapidly in the field of photocatalysis due to its low cost, simple preparation and nontoxicity. However, g-C3 N4 has some limitations in practical applications, such as small specific surface area, weak photogenerated carrier transport capacity and narrow visible light response range. To overcome these challenges, researchers have modified g-C3 N4 through various strategies to improve its photocatalytic performance. In this paper, the synthesis methods and modification strategies of g-C3 N4 are summarized from the structural characteristics of g-C3 N4 , and its research focus and application prospect in the field of photocatalysis are prospected.
