Abstract:Single crystals of morpholinium 2,4,6-trinitrophenolate (M3NP) were cultivated using the slow solvent evaporation method at room temperature. These crystals underwent thorough material characterization employing a range of analytical methods like XRD, NMR, FT-IR, FT-Raman, UV–Vis, PL, dielectric, mechanical, and optical investigations. This multi-faceted approach provided detailed insights into the structural, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties of the M3NP crystals. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals the intermolecular interactions within the M3NP crystal. Additionally, a theoretical computational analysis was conducted on the developed crystal using the DFT/B3LYP/6–311 + G(d,p) basis set. The acquired structural and spectroscopic values were compared with theoretical results and found to be in coinciding with each other. Frontier molecular orbital energy gap 3.764 eV reveals the chemical reactivity of the molecule. UV–Vis studies showed that M3NP has a band gap of 2.471 eV. The optical and electrical conductivity studies were investigated. Natural Bonding Orbital analysis was used to study the energies of donors and acceptors, as well as their differences, in various interactions within M3NP. The mechanical, dielectric, and thermal nature as well as the electrical conductivity of the M3NP crystal has been studied. The nonlinear optical properties of the M3NP crystal are attributed to its first-order hyperpolarizability. The third-order susceptibility value, calculated to be 2.06 × 10 –6 e.s.u. indicates the material's nonlinear optical response. Notably, the nonlinear absorption coefficient exceeds the nonlinear refractive index. This finding suggests that the material exhibits stronger absorption of light compared to changes in refractive index under the influence of intense light. Furthermore, M3NP demonstrates an estimated laser damage threshold value of 2.5 GJcm −2 , highlighting its exceptional resilience in contrast to typical nonlinear optical materials, such as Potassium dihydrogen Phosphate and urea.
