Abstract:Fatty acids (FAs) are an essential component of the erythrocyte membrane, and nutrition and physical exercise are two variables that affect their structure and function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the erythrocyte profile in a group of high-level endurance runners, as well as the changes in different FAs, throughout a sports season in relation to the training performed. A total of 21 high-level male endurance runners (23 ± 4 years; height: 1.76 ± 0.05) were evaluated at four different times throughout a sports season. The athletes had at least 5 years of previous experience and participated in national and international competitions. The determination of the different FAs was carried out by gas chromatography. The runners exhibited low concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and omega-3 index (IND ω-3), as well as high values of stearic acid (SA), palmitic acid (PA), and arachidonic acid (AA), compared to the values of reference throughout the study. In conclusion, training modifies the erythrocyte FA profile in high-level endurance runners, reducing the concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as DHA and AA and increasing the concentrations of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) such as SA and the PA. High-level endurance runners should pay special attention to the intake of PUFAs ω-3 in their diet or consider supplementation during training periods to avoid deficiency.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to evaluate the changes in the erythrocyte fatty acid (FAs) profile of high - level endurance runners during the sports season and explore the relationship between these changes and the training load. Specifically, the research objectives include: 1. **Evaluating the changes in the erythrocyte fatty acid profile**: By collecting samples at four different time points during the sports season, evaluate the changes in the concentrations of different fatty acids in the erythrocytes of high - level endurance runners. 2. **Analyzing the impact of training on the fatty acid profile**: Study how changes in training volume and intensity affect the fatty acid composition in erythrocytes, especially the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and saturated fatty acids (SFAs). 3. **Exploring the impact of nutritional intake**: Analyze the eating habits of athletes during the season, especially the intake of fatty acids, and how these factors affect the changes in the erythrocyte fatty acid profile. ### Research background Fatty acids are an important part of the erythrocyte membrane, and their structure and function are affected by nutrition and physical exercise. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) play a particularly important role in athletes' bodies. They are not only precursors of energy storage and certain hormones but also participate in the structure of the immune system and cell membranes. However, changes in the training load and intensity of high - level endurance runners may lead to changes in the fatty acid composition in the erythrocyte membrane, thereby affecting its function. ### Main findings 1. **Increase in saturated fatty acids (SFAs)**: The study found that as the season progresses, the concentrations of saturated fatty acids (such as palmitic acid and stearic acid) in erythrocytes increase significantly. 2. **Decrease in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)**: The concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as docosahexaenoic acid DHA and arachidonic acid AA) in erythrocytes decrease significantly. 3. **Decrease in the omega - 3 index**: The omega - 3 index (the sum of DHA and EPA) decreases significantly during the season, suggesting that high - level endurance runners should pay special attention to the intake or supplementation of omega - 3 fatty acids. 4. **Correlation analysis**: The study also found that there are significant correlations between the changes in fatty acids and training volume, intensity, and cumulative distance. For example, palmitic acid and total saturated fatty acids are positively correlated with training volume, while arachidonic acid and DHA are negatively correlated with high - intensity training distance. ### Conclusion Training has a significant impact on the erythrocyte fatty acid profile of high - level endurance runners, mainly manifested as an increase in saturated fatty acids and a decrease in polyunsaturated fatty acids. In order to maintain the health and function of the erythrocyte membrane, it is recommended that high - level endurance runners pay special attention to the intake or supplementation of omega - 3 fatty acids during training.
