Abstract:We consider a shrinking flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_n^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_n is the n-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of an elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, provided the initial hypersuface is origin-symmetric and f is a smooth positive even function on S^n. For the case alpha>= 1+n*beta, beta>0, we prove that the flow converges smoothly after normalisation to a unique smooth solution of an elliptic equation without any constraint on the initial hypersuface and smooth positive function f. When beta=1, our argument provides a uniform proof to the existence of the solutions to the equation of L_p Minkowski problem for p belongs to (-n-1,+infty).

Abstract:This is the first of a two-parts work on the qualitative properties and large time behavior for the following quasilinear equation involving a spatially inhomogeneous absorption $$ \partial_tu=\Delta u^m-|x|^{\sigma}u^p, $$ posed for $(x,t)\in\mathbf{R}^N\times(0,\infty)$, $N\geq1$, and in the range of exponents $1<m<p<\infty$, $\sigma>0$. We give a complete classification of (singular) self-similar solutions of the form $$ u(x,t)=t^{-\alpha}f(|x|t^{-\beta}), \ \alpha=\frac{\sigma+2}{\sigma(m-1)+2(p-1)}, \ \beta=\frac{p-m}{\sigma(m-1)+2(p-1)}, $$ showing that their form and behavior strongly depends on the critical exponent $$ p_F(\sigma)=m+\frac{\sigma+2}{N}. $$ For $p\geq p_F(\sigma)$, we prove that all self-similar solutions have a tail as $\xi\to\infty$ of one of the forms $$ u(x,t)\sim C|x|^{-(\sigma+2)/(p-m)} \quad {\rm or} \quad u(x,t)\sim \left(\frac{1}{p-1}\right)^{1/(p-1)}|x|^{-\sigma/(p-1)}, $$ while for $m<p<p_F(\sigma)$ we add to the previous the \emph{existence and uniqueness} of a \emph{compactly supported very singular solution}. These solutions will be employed in describing the large time behavior of general solutions in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract:We address the two-scale homogenization of the Navier–Stokes and Cahn–Hilliard equations in the case of a weak miscibility of a two-component fluid. To this end a notion of the miscibility strength is formulated on the basis of a correlation between the upscaling parameter and the surface tension. As a result, a two-scale model is derived. Macro-equations turn out to be a generalization of the Darcy law enjoying cross-coupling permeability tensors. It implies that the Darcy velocity of each phase depends on pressure gradients of both phases. Micro-equations serve for determination both of the permeability tensors and the capillary pressure. An example is constructed by analytical tools to describe capillary displacement of oil by mixture of water with carbon dioxide in a system of hydrophobic parallel channels.

Anisotropic flows of Forchheimer-type in porous media and their steady states

Abstract:We study the anisotropic Forchheimer-typed flows for compressible fluids in porous media. The first half of the paper is devoted to understanding the nonlinear structure of the anisotropic momentum equations. Unlike the isotropic flows, the important monotonicity properties are not automatically satisfied in this case. Therefore, various sufficient conditions for them are derived and applied to the experimental data. In the second half of the paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the steady state flows subject to a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. It is also established that these steady states, in appropriate functional spaces, have local Hölder continuous dependence on the forcing function and the boundary data.

Abstract:Fluid flows under a p-Laplacian operator formulation have been considered recently in connection with the modeling of non-Newtonian fluid processes. To a certain extent, the main reason behind the interest in p-Laplacian operators is the possibility of determining experimental values for the constant p appearing in them. The goal of the present study is to introduce the analysis of solutions of a one-dimensional porous media flow arising in magnetohydrodynamics with generalized initial data under a Lebesgue integrability condition. We present a weak formulation of this problem, and we consider boundedness and uniqueness properties of solutions and also its asymptotic relation with the standard parabolic p-Laplacian equation. Then, we explore solutions arising from classical symmetries (including an explicit kink solution in the p = 3 case) along with asymptotic stationary and non-stationary solutions. The search for stationary solutions is based on a Hamiltonian approach. Finally, non-stationary solutions are obtained by using an exponential scaling resulting in a Hamilton–Jacobi type of equation.

Homogenization of some evolutionary non-Newtonian flows in porous media

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the homogenization of evolutionary incompressible purely viscous non-Newtonian flows of Carreau-Yasuda type in porous media with small perforation parameter $0< \varepsilon \ll 1$, where the small holes are periodically distributed. Darcy's law is recovered in the homogenization limit. Applying Poincaré type inequality in porous media allows us to derive the uniform estimates on velocity field, of which the gradient is small of size $\varepsilon$ in $L^{2}$ space. This indicates the nonlinear part in the viscosity coefficient does not contribute in the limit and a linear model (Darcy's law) is obtained. The estimates of the pressure rely on a proper extension from the perforated domain to the homogeneous non-perforated domain. By integrating the equations in time variable such that each term in the resulting equations has certain continuity in time, we can establish the extension of the pressure by applying the dual formula with the restriction operator.

Abstract:Using extensive numerical simulation of the Navier–Stokes equations, we study the transition from the Darcy's law for slow flow of fluids through a disordered porous medium to the nonlinear flow regime in which the effect of inertia cannot be neglected. The porous medium is represented by two-dimensional slices of a three-dimensional image of a sandstone. We study the problem over wide ranges of porosity and the Reynolds number, as well as two types of boundary conditions, and compute essential features of fluid flow, namely, the strength of the vorticity, the effective permeability of the pore space, the frictional drag, and the relationship between the macroscopic pressure gradient and the fluid velocity v . The results indicate that when the Reynolds number Re is low enough that the Darcy's law holds, the magnitude of the vorticity is nearly zero. As Re increases, however, so also does , and its rise from nearly zero begins at the same Re at which the Darcy's law breaks down. We also show that a nonlinear relation between the macroscopic pressure gradient and the fluid velocity v , given by, , provides accurate representation of the numerical data, where and are the fluid's viscosity and density, is the effective Darcy permeability in the linear regime, and is a generalized nonlinear resistance. Theoretical justification for the relation is presented, and its predictions are also compared with those of the Forchheimer's equation.

Finite Element Approximation of the Fractional Porous Medium Equation

Abstract:We construct a finite element method for the numerical solution of a fractional porous medium equation on a bounded open Lipschitz polytopal domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$, where $d = 2$ or $3$. The pressure in the model is defined as the solution of a fractional Poisson equation, involving the fractional Neumann Laplacian in terms of its spectral definition. We perform a rigorous passage to the limit as the spatial and temporal discretization parameters tend to zero and show that a subsequence of the sequence of finite element approximations defined by the proposed numerical method converges to a bounded and nonnegative weak solution of the initial-boundary-value problem under consideration. This result can be therefore viewed as a constructive proof of the existence of a nonnegative, energy-dissipative, weak solution to the initial-boundary-value problem for the fractional porous medium equation under consideration, based on the Neumann Laplacian. The convergence proof relies on results concerning the finite element approximation of the spectral fractional Laplacian and compactness techniques for nonlinear partial differential equations, together with properties of the equation, which are shown to be inherited by the numerical method. We also prove that the total energy associated with the problem under consideration exhibits exponential decay in time.

Abstract:The porous media equation has been proposed as a phenomenological ``non-extensive'' generalization of classical diffusion. Here, we show that a very similar equation can be derived, in a systematic manner, for a classical fluid by assuming nonlinear response, i.e. that the diffusive flux depends on gradients of a power of the concentration. The present equation distinguishes from the porous media equation in that it describes \emph{% generalized classical} diffusion, i.e. with $r/\sqrt Dt$ scaling, but with a generalized Einstein relation, and with power-law probability distributions typical of nonextensive statistical mechanics.

Homogenization of Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations for multiple species in a porous medium

Abstract:The Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations form a coupled parabolic-elliptic system, which models the transport of charged particles under the influence of diffusion and electric force. In this paper, we rigorously derive a homogenized model for the PNP equations, for the case of multiple species, defined on a periodic porous medium in spatial dimensions two and three. This extends the previous homogenization results for the PNP equations concerning two species. Here, the main difficulty is that the microscopic concentrations remain uniformly bounded in a space with relatively weak regularity. Therefore, the standard Aubin-Lions-Simon-type compactness results for porous media, which give strong convergence of the microscopic solutions, become inapplicable in our weak setting. We overcome this problem by constructing suitable cut-off functions. The cut-off function, together with the previously known energy functional associated with the system, gives us equicontinuity of the microscopic concentrations on the part of the domain where the values of the concentrations do not exceed the height of the cut-off function. Moreover, it turns out that, on the remaining part of the domain where the concentrations are larger than the height of the cut-off function, the application of the energy functional is enough in order to obtain equicontinuity. These arguments eventually yield strong convergence of the microscopic concentrations in $L^1_t L^r_x$, for some $r>2$, enabling us to pass to the limit in the nonlinear drift term. Finally, we derive the homogenized equations by means of two-scale convergence in $L^p_t L^q_x$ setting.

Physical Similarity of Fluid Flow in Bimodal Porous Media: Part 1 -- Basic Model and Solution Characteristics

Abstract:Fluid flow through bimodal porous media, characterized by a distinct separation in pore size distribution, is critical in various scientific and engineering applications, including groundwater management, oil and gas production, and carbon sequestration. This note delves into the physical similarity of fluid flow within such media, bridging the gap between microscale phenomena and macroscale observations. We present a representative mathematical model that conceptualizes bimodal porous media as a double-continuum system, distinguishing between macroporous and microporous regions. The model captures the complex interactions between these regions, particularly focusing on the challenges of modeling fluid flow when there is significant disparity in pore sizes. By employing a heuristic approach grounded in pore-scale tomography, we derive governing equations that describe fluid flow and analyze the solution characteristics. The results reveal unique features of the fluid flow in bimodal systems, such as the occurrence of boundary discontinuities and the delayed transient response, which are not observed in conventional porous media. This work provides ground for further studies in bimodal porous media, offering insights that could enhance predictive modeling and optimization in various applications concerning porous media with similar bimodal pore size distributions.

Diffuse Interface Model for Two-Phase Flows on Evolving Surfaces with Different Densities: Global Well-Posedness

Abstract:We show existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to a Navier-Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard type system on a given two-dimensional evolving surface in the case of different densities and a singular (logarithmic) potential. The system describes a diffuse interface model for a two-phase flow of viscous incompressible fluids on an evolving surface. We also establish the validity of the instantaneous strict separation property from the pure phases. To show these results we use our previous achievements on local well-posedness together with suitable novel regularity results for the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. The latter allows to obtain higher-order energy estimates to extend the local solution globally in time. To this aim the time evolution of energy type quantities has to be calculated and estimated carefully.

Homogenization of Non-Local Navier-Stokes-Korteweg Equations for Compressible Liquid-Vapour Flow in Porous Media

Abstract:We consider a nonlocal version of the quasi-static Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a non-monotone pressure law. This system governs the low-Reynolds number dynamics of a compressible viscous fluid that may take either a liquid or a vapour state. For a porous domain that is perforated by cavities with diameter proportional to their mutual distance the homogenization limit is analyzed. We extend the results for compressible one-phase flow with polytropic pressure laws and prove that the effective motion is governed by a nonlocal version of the Cahn-Hilliard equation. Crucial for the analysis is the convolution-like structure of the nonlocal capillarity term that allows to equip the system with a generalized convex free energy. Moreover, the capillarity term accounts not only for the energetic interaction within the fluid but also for the interaction with a solid wall boundary.

Abstract:Flows in porous media appear in many fields of science and engineering applications. In this paper, the inertial effect on fluid transport in a porous medium is investigated both experimentally and numerically by employing a simplified ordered porous medium model. Transition from linear to nonlinear behavior is evaluated empirically using a friction factor-Reynolds number correlation. The numerical model is first validated by comparing computed macroscopic flow characteristics with experimental observation, and then the validated model is used to further explore localized microscopic flow patterns in detail. The results show that the high-velocity flow localized in a narrow tube dominates the bulk characteristics of the fluid transport. The dissipative pressure losses in the recirculation zones around flow separation play a significant role in the nonlinear behavior of porous media flow.

Abstract:In the present note, we show that, as a priori bounds, the vorticity dynamics derived from Leray's backward self-similarity hypothesis admits only trivial solution in viscous as well as inviscid flows. By analogy, there is no non-zero solution in the forward self-similar equation. Since the Navier-Stokes or Euler equations are invariant under space translation in the whole space, our analysis establishes that technically flawed arguments have been exploited in a number of past papers, notably in Necas, Ruzicka & Sverak (1996); Tsai (1998); and Pomeau (2016), where the presumed decays or bounds at infinity are ill-defined and non-existent. Furthermore, an effort has been made to exemplify an inappropriate application of the familiar extremum principles in the theory of linear elliptic equation. In the appendix, we give a counterexample to the Sobolev inequality and, hence illustrate the nature of self contradiction. In the totality comparison of Lp norms, its scope of application is not significant.

Abstract:We study a class of discrete models in which a collection of particles evolves in time following the gradient flow of an energy depending on the cell areas of an associated Laguerre (i.e. a weighted Voronoi) tessellation. We consider the high number of cell limit of such systems and, using a modulated energy argument, we prove convergence towards smooth solutions of nonlinear diffusion PDEs of porous medium type.

Abstract:Existence and uniqueness of solutions is shown for a class of viscoelastic flows in porous media with particular attention to problems with nonsmooth porosities. The considered models are formulated in terms of the time-dependent nonlinear interaction between porosity and effective pressure, which in certain cases leads to porosity waves. In particular, conditions for well-posedness in the presence of initial porosities with jump discontinuities are identified.

Self-consistent expansion and field-theoretic renormalization group for a singular nonlinear diffusion equation with anomalous scaling

Abstract:The method of self-consistent expansions is a powerful tool for handling strong coupling problems that might otherwise be beyond the reach of perturbation theory, providing surprisingly accurate approximations even at low order. First applied in its embryonic form to fully-developed turbulence, it has subsequently been successfully applied to a variety of problems that include polymer statistics, interface dynamics and high order perturbation theory for the anharmonic oscillator. Here we show that the self-consistent expansion can be applied to singular perturbation problems arising in the theory of partial differential equations. We demonstrate its application to Barenblatt's nonlinear diffusion equation for porous media filtration, where the long-time asymptotics exhibits anomalous dimensions which can be systematically calculated using the perturbative renormalization group. We find that even the first order self-consistent expansion improves the approximation of the anomalous dimension obtained by the first order perturbative renormalization group, especially in the strong coupling regime. We also develop a field-theoretic framework for deterministic partial differential equations to facilitate the application of self-consistent expansions to other dynamic systems, and illustrate its application using the example of Barenblatt's equation. The scope of our results on the combination of renormalization group and self-consistent expansions is limited to partial differential equations whose long-time asymptotics is controlled by incomplete similarity. However, our work suggests that these methods could be applied to a broader suite of singular perturbation problems such as boundary layer theory, multiple scales analysis and matched asymptotic expansions, for which excellent approximations using renormalization group methods alone are already available.
