Abstract:Because of multiple potential reaction sites and variable oxidation depths,oxidation of cyclohexene can lead to a mixture of products with different oxidation states and functional groups,such as 7-oxabicyclo[4.1.0]heptane,trans/cis-cyclohexane-1,2-diol,cyclohex-2-en-1-ol,cyclo-hex-2-en-1-one,and even adipic acid. These products are broadly and abundantly used intermedi-ates in the chemical industry; therefore,controllable oxidation reactions for cyclohexene that can selectively afford the targeted products are synthetically valuable for applications in both the academy and industry,thus becoming the aim of synthetic and catalytic chemists in the field. Many reports on selective oxidation of cyclohexene have recently appeared in the literature because of its significance. This short review summarizes the recent advances on this subject,and the contents are mainly classified based on the chosen oxidants. We hope that this review can provide a useful guide for controllable and selective catalytic oxidation of cyclohexene for interested readers from both the academy and industry.
Copper Vanadate Nanowires on G-C3n4 Toward Highly Selective Oxidation of Methanol to Dimethoxymethane

Abstract:The copper vanadate nanowires grown on g-C3N4 were fabricated with a simple impregnation approach. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials were characterized by various methods, involving XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS and N-2 adsorption-desorption technique to identify their composition, structure and growing process. The selective oxidation of methanol was employed to assess the catalytic performance of the hybrid materials. The results revealed that the copper vanadate nanowires were mainly composed of Cu0.55V2O5 crystalline with mixed valence state of Cu+, Cu2+, V4+ and V5+, which were ascribed to in situ reduction during the preparation process. The hybrid composite was active and highly selective for methanol oxidation using molecular oxygen as oxidant with about 50% conversion of methanol and >99% selectivity to dimethoxymethane. The correlation between high activity and surface structure, composition of the catalyst, as well as the relationship between chemical potentials on catalyst surface and the reactivities, was analysed. The hybrid catalyst presented excellent operating lifetime and stability.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of small organic molecules and simultaneous hydrogen evolution from water splitting over photocatalysis is a research hot spot in chemical synthesis. It is of great significance to develop a highly selective and environmentally friendly photocatalytic method for cyclohexene oxidation coupled with hydrogen evolution. In this work, Ni/NiO/CdS nanocomposites was prepared by using Ni-BTC (BTC=1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylic acid) as the precursor of Ni/NiO. The photocatalytic oxidation products of cyclohexene were cyclohx-2-en-1-ol, cyclohex-2-en-1-one, cyclohexanone and cyclohexane-1,2-diol at room temperature, under normal pressure and argon atmosphere. Under the optimal conditions, the conversion rate of cyclohexene is 14.8%, and the hydrogen production efficiency is 266.7 μmol·g-1·h-1. Moreover, the product cyclohexanone was detected which is rarely reported in other similar studies. It was confirmed that cyclohexanone is the reduction product of cyclohex-2-en-1-one by the active H2 in the reaction. The photocatalytic oxidation mechanism of cyclohexene was proposed, and the oxidation substances in the reaction were proved to be h+ and •OH. It was confirmed that the •OH radicals preferentially attack cyclohexene-allyl α-C-H bonds in photocatalytic reaction, so that the yields of cyclohex-2-en-1-one is more than cyclohexane-1,2-diol. This study provides a green strategy for photocatalytic selective oxidation of cyclohexene simultaneous hydrogen production.

Insights into the Synergistic Catalytic Effect of TiO2 Supported V-W Oxides for Selective C-H Bond Oxidation of Cyclohexane to KA Oil

Abstract:It is urgent to develop an efficient and stable non-noble metal catalyst for selective C-H bond oxidation of cyclohexane. Herein, a series of V-W oxides supported on TiO2 catalysts (V-W/TiO2) were fabricated. The V-W/TiO2 catalysts exhibited much higher catalytic activity for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to KA oil, compared to that of V/TiO2 and W/TiO2 catalysts. The good distribution of active metals and the synergistic effect were responsible for the enhanced catalytic activity. H2-TPR results disclosed that the presence of V in V-W/TiO2 affected the reducibility of W6+ species, and XPS verified that an electronic interaction was formed between them. Such results led to good catalytic reusability of V-W/TiO2 catalyst during the reactions, and no obvious activity loss was found after six runs. The reaction mechanism was investigated, and the results verified that hydroxyl radicals generated from H2O2 homolysis were the main active oxidative species. Theoretical study revealed that V dopant could regulate electronic structure of adjacent O atom, facilitating the adsorption of cyclohexane, and lower energy was needed for the rate-limiting step over V-W/TiO2 during the whole oxidation reaction. This work developed an efficient V-W/TiO2 catalyst for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane via a synergistic effect.

Abstract:Au/Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method and characterized by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol was investigated over Au/Co3O4 catalysts using molecular oxygen as oxidant. These catalysts showed higher activities as compared to the pure Co3O4 under the same reaction conditions.

Abstract:Photocatalytic selective oxidation plays an important role in developing green chemistry. However, it is challenging to design an efficient photocatalyst for controlling the selectivity of photocatalytic oxidation reaction and exploring its detailed mechanism. Here, we synthesized three conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with D-A structures, named M-SATE-CMPs (MZn, Cu and Co), with different d-band centers based on different metal centers, resulting in the discrepancy in adsorption and activation capacities for the reactants, which produces the selectivity of β-keto esters being catalyzed into α-hydroperoxide β-keto esters (ROOH) or to α-hydroxyl β-keto esters (ROH). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrate that the adsorption and activation capacities of the metal active centers in M-SATE-CMPs (MZn, Cu and Co) for ROOH are the key factors to influence the photocatalytic selective oxidation of β-keto ester. This study provides a promising strategy for designing a metallaphotoredox catalyst whose photocatalytic selectivity depends on the d-band center of metal site in the catalyst.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that crystal planes of heterogeneous catalysts could display enhanced activity, such that higher turnover or chemoselectivity could be achieved. Here we report an example where the reaction stereoselectivity was significantly affected by the catalyst crystal planes. In copper-catalyzed deoxygenation reaction of aromatic epoxides, copper cubes, wires, and plates gave the olefin products with different cis/trans selectivities, whereas homogeneous copper catalysts showed poor selectivity. Scanning tunneling microscope and density functional theory studies revealed that the different adsorption mode and higher adsorption strength of epoxide oxygen on Cu{100} plane were responsible for the observed variation of selectivity. The copper-catalyzed deoxygenation reaction provided new practical access to cis-olefins from readily available aromatic epoxides. Our work also indicated that nanocrystal catalysts may provide useful stereochemical control in organic reactions.

Abstract:Clarification and control of the active sites at the atomic/molecular level is the real deal of nanocatalysts. The catalytic performance of selective oxidation among two oxidation states of nitrate-incorporated octadecavanadates, [V18O46(NO3)]5− (V18) and [V18O46(NO3)]4− (V18ox), and copper-substituted one, [Cu2V16O44(NO3)]5− (Cu2V16) was investigated. Both V18 and V18ox possessed the same double-helical structures and one of two tetravalent vanadium sites of V18 was oxidized in V18ox. The comparison of the mobility of the incorporated nitrate reveals that tetravalent vanadium centres shows stronger interaction with the incorporated anion than pentavalent ones. The oxidation reaction with V18ox proceeded more smoothly with tert-BuOOH as an oxidant than that of V18. The reactivity and selectivity of the oxidation of 2-cyclohexen-1-ol was different among the delivertives. V18ox showed the highet reactivity with 72% selectivity to epoxide. With V18, reactivity was lower but higher selectivity to epoxide was achieved. In the presence of Cu2V16, 2-cyclohexen-1-one was selectively obtained with 81% selectivity. The order of the reactivity for the cyclooctene was V18ox, V18 and Cu2V16. These results shows that the cap part of the double-helix act as the active site. Even though vanadium-oxygen species exhibit same structures, catalytic property can be controlled by the valence of vanadium and metal substitution.

Abstract:The crystal phase of metal nanocatalysts significantly affects their catalytic performance. Cu-based nanomaterials are unique electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce high-value hydrocarbons. However, studies to date are limited to the conventional face-centered cubic (fcc) Cu. Here, we report a crystal phase-dependent catalytic behavior of Cu, after the successful synthesis of high-purity 4H Cu and heterophase 4H/fcc Cu using the 4H and 4H/fcc Au as templates, respectively. Remarkably, the obtained unconventional crystal structures of Cu exhibit enhanced overall activity and higher ethylene (C2H4) selectivity in CO2RR compared to the fcc Cu. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the 4H phase and 4H/fcc interface of Cu favor the C2H4 formation pathway compared to the fcc Cu, leading to the crystal phase-dependent C2H4 selectivity. This study demonstrates the importance of crystal phase engineering of metal nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic reactions, offering a new strategy to prepare novel catalysts with unconventional phases for various applications.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of C-H bonds in saturated hydrocarbons at low temperature with noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts is a profound challenge for the catalysis community. Here we report the facile synthesis of Ce1-xCrxO2- (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4) nanocrystals through a low-temperature hydrothermal method. The catalytic activity of the as-prepared catalysts was evaluated in the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol using H2O2 as an oxidant at room temperature and 45 degrees C. The activity results were correlated with their phase structure, composition, surface areas, and surface element states with the help of X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. It was found that these Ce0.7Cr0.3O2- nanocrystals are highly active for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol using H2O2 as an oxidant at low temperature. In the presence of H2O2 at 45 degrees C for 5h using Ce0.7Cr0.3O2- as a catalyst, the conversion of cyclohexane reaches 50.3% and the total selectivity of cyclohexanol/cyclohexanone is 94.4% with relative good reversibility for at least four cycles. Mechanistic investigation results show that the high activity can be attributed to the high Cr6+ content in the Ce1-xCrxO2- solid solutions and the formation of highly oxidative intermediates with H2O2.

Abstract:The research progress of solid catalysts for selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone using oxygen was reviewed, emphatically precious metal catalysts, transition metal catalysts, oxide catalysts and molecular sieve catalysts. Zircon-based composite oxide catalyst and gold catalyst loaded on molecular sieve showed relatively high catalytic activity , selectivity and stability and had expected application and commercialization prospects.

Abstract:AbstractActive species regulation is a key scientific issue that essentially determines the selectivity and activity of a photocatalyst. Herein, CuI‐bridged tetrakis(4‐ethynylphenyl)ethene aggregates (T4EPE‐Cu) with photo‐regulated 1O2 and O2.− generation were demonstrated for selective photocatalytic aerobic oxidation. In this system, transient photovoltage combined with the density functional theory calculations confirmed that Cu‐alkynyl was the main oxygen activation site. The adsorbed O2 tends to produce O2.− because of the potential well effect of Cu‐alkynyl under high‐energy light excitation. But under low‐energy light, O2 tends to produce 1O2 via resonance energy transfer with Cu‐alkynyl. For α‐terpinene oxidation, the ratios of 1O2 products to O2.− products can be controlled from 1.3 (380 nm) to 10.7 (600 nm). Furthermore, T4EPE‐Cu exhibited ultrahigh photocatalytic performance for Glaser coupling and benzylamine oxidation, with a conversion and selectivity of over 99 %.

Abstract:Composite oxide catalysts have been widely studied in numerous fields. Species with different valences are responsible for different effect on activity. In this study, a battery of catalysts, of which support material are differently proportional phases of TiO2 by adjusting the amount of Sn and of which loading composition is MnCuOx, were synthesized. It is found that the doping of Sn could be in favor of the transformation from anatase TiO2 to rutile TiO2 at lower temperature, could enlarge the specific surface area and generate more oxygen vacancies, which could accelerate the oxidation of NO to NO2, beneficial for the “Fast-SCR” reaction at low temperature. In addition, Cu species prefer to exist in form of Cu0 on rutile TiO2., improving the reductive ability of catalysts and getting more monodentate nitrite species involved into the reaction. To recap, this study provides a theoretical guidance for preparation and exploration of Cu-based catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract Selective oxidation is one of the most important and challenging transformations in both academic research and chemical industry. Recently, a highly selective and efficient way to synthesize biologically active γ -hydroxy- α , β -unsaturated molecules from Cu-catalyzed vinylogous aerobic oxidation of α , β - and β , γ -unsaturated compounds has been developed. However, the detailed reaction mechanism remains elusive. Herein, we report a density functional theory study on this Cu-catalyzed vinylogous aerobic oxidation of γ , γ -disubstituted α , β - and β , γ -unsaturated isomers. Our computational study unveils detailed mechanism for each elementary step, i.e. deprotonation, O 2 activation, and reduction. Besides, the origin of regioselectivity, divergent reactivities of substrates as well as reducing agents, and the byproduct generation have also been investigated. Notably, the copper catalyst retains the + 2 oxidation state through the whole catalytic cycle and plays essential roles in multiple steps. These findings would provide hints on mechanistic studies and future development of transition metal-catalyzed aerobic oxidation reactions.

Abstract:V2O5 and MoO3 mixed oxides supported by SiO2 were studied as the catalysts in the aqueous phase allylic oxidation of cyclohexene to unsaturated alcohol 2-cyclohexene-1-ol and unsaturated ketone 2-cyclohexene-1-one. The additional layer of TiO2 deposited by atomic layer deposition significantly suppresses the epoxidation pathway and the formation of cyclohexane oxide and cyclohexane-1, 2-diol. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to study the relationship between the structure of the catalysts and their catalytic performance. The effects on the catalytic activity of different solvent, hydrogen peroxide to cyclohexene ratio, and reusability were investigated.

Abstract:A highly efficient and stable hydrotalcite-derived Cu-MgAlO catalyst was developed for the partial oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen. The physical-chemical properties of Cu-MgAlO catalysts were studied, and the results indicated that the copper component had been successfully introduced into the hydrotalcite unit layer structure. The catalytic reaction results showed that copper as the active species could activate C-H bond and effectively promote the decomposition of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide (CHHP) to KA oil. 8.3% of cyclohexane conversion and 82.9% of selectivity for KA oil were obtained over 9%Cu-MgAlO catalyst at 150 °C with 0.6 MPa of oxygen pressure for 2 h.
