Abstract:Control of single electron spins constitutes one of the most promising platforms for spintronics, quantum sensing, and quantum information processing. Utilizing single molecular magnets as their hosts establishes an interesting framework since their molecular structure is highly flexible and chemistry-based large-scale synthesis directly provides a way toward scalability. Here, we demonstrate coherent spin manipulation of single molecules on a surface, which we control individually using a scanning tunneling microscope in combination with electron spin resonance. We previously found that iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecules form a spin-1/2 system when placed on an insulating thin film of magnesium oxide (MgO). Performing Rabi oscillation and Hahn echo measurements, we show that the FePc spin can be coherently manipulated with a phase coherence time T2Echo of several hundreds of nanoseconds. Tunneling current-dependent measurements demonstrate that interaction with the tunneling electrons is the dominating source of decoherence. In addition, we perform Hahn echo measurements on small self-assembled arrays of FePc molecules. We show that, despite additional intermolecular magnetic coupling, spin resonance and T2Echo are much less perturbed by T1 spin flip events of neighboring spins than by the tunneling current. This will potentially allow for individual addressable molecular spins in self-assemblies and with application for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Preserving quantum coherence with the increase of a system's size and complexity is a major challenge. Molecules, with their diverse sizes and complexities and many degrees of freedom, are an excellent platform for studying the transition from quantum to classical behavior. While most quantum-control studies of molecules focus on vibrations and rotations, we focus here on creating a quantum superposition between two nuclear-spin isomers of the same molecule. We present a scheme that exploits an avoided crossing in the spectrum to create strong coupling between two uncoupled nuclear-spin-isomer states, hence creating an isomeric qubit. We model our scheme using a four-level Hamiltonian and explore the coherent dynamics in the different regimes and parameters of our system. Our four-level model and approach can be applied to other systems with a similar energy-level structure.

Abstract:We present a general method to realize resonant coupling between spins even though their energies are of different scales. Applying the method to the electron and nuclear spin systems such as a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center with its nearby nuclei, we show that a specific dynamical switching of the electron spin Rabi frequency achieves efficient electron-nuclear coupling, providing a much stronger quantum sensing signal and dynamic nuclear polarization than previous methods. This protocol has applications in high-field nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonances as well as low-power quantum control of nuclear spins.

Abstract:Benefiting from both molecular tunability and versatile methods for deployment, optically interfaced molecular spins are a promising platform for quantum technologies such as sensing and imaging. Room-temperature optically detected coherent spin control is a key enabler for many applications, combining sensitive readout, versatile spin manipulation, and ambient operation. Here we demonstrate such functionality in a molecular spin system. Using the photoexcited triplet state of organic chromophores (pentacene doped in a para-terphenyl host), we optically detect coherent spin manipulation with photoluminescence contrasts exceeding 10% and microsecond coherence times at room temperature. We further demonstrate how coherent control of multiple triplet sublevels can significantly enhance optical spin contrast, and extend optically detected coherent control to a thermally evaporated thin film, retaining high photoluminescence contrast and coherence times of order one microsecond. These results open opportunities for room-temperature quantum technologies that can be systematically tailored through synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:Nuclear spin isomers of molecules play a pivotal role in our understanding of quantum mechanics and can have significant implications for various fields. In this work, we report the isolation and characterization of stable nuclear spin isomers as well as conformational isomers of a reactive compound, namely carbonyl diisothiocyanate. It can exist as three rotational conformers, two of which, the syn-syn and syn-anti, were observed in a pulsed supersonic jet by chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the 2-12 GHz frequency region. The rotational spectra of two distinct nuclear spin isomers of syn-syn-carbonyl diisothiocyanate, ortho and para, were recorded and analyzed. Experimental molecular rotational parameters for the identified rotational and nuclear spin isomers were determined, including rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, and nuclear quadrupole coupling constants. The two nuclear spin isomers are distinguished by unique hyperfine splitting signatures in their rotational spectra as an outcome of their different nuclear spin states. The relative abundances of the two observed conformers in the gas phase were estimated from the intensity of their rotational transitions. Following detection of singly substituted rare isotopologues of the syn-syn conformer, a partial substitution (rs) structure was determined.

Abstract:The peculiarities of coherent spin radiation by magnetic nanomolecules is investigated by means of numerical simulation. The consideration is based on a microscopic Hamiltonian taking into account realistic dipole interactions. Superradiance can be realized only when the molecular sample is coupled to a resonant electric circuit. The feedback mechanism allows for the achievement of a fast spin reversal time and large radiation intensity. The influence on the level of radiation, caused by sample shape and orientation, is analysed. The most powerful coherent radiation is found to occur for an elongated sample directed along the resonator magnetic field.

Abstract:We suggest a technique to induce effective, controllable interactions between atoms that is based on Raman scattering into an optical mode propagating with a slow group velocity. The resulting excitation corresponds to the creation of spin-flipped atomic pairs in a way that is analogous to correlated photon emission in optical parametric amplification. The technique can be used for fast generation of entangled atomic ensembles, spin squeezing, and applications in quantum information processing.

Abstract:The coherent control of spin qubits forms the basis of many applications in quantum information processing and nanoscale sensing, imaging and spectroscopy. Such control is conventionally achieved by direct driving of the qubit transition with a resonant global field, typically at microwave frequencies. Here we introduce an approach that relies on the resonant driving of nearby environment spins, whose localised magnetic field in turn drives the qubit when the environmental spin Rabi frequency matches the qubit resonance. This concept of environmentally mediated resonance (EMR) is explored experimentally using a qubit based on a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond, with nearby electronic spins serving as the environmental mediators. We demonstrate EMR driven coherent control of the NV spin-state, including the observation of Rabi oscillations, free induction decay, and spin-echo. This technique also provides a way to probe the nanoscale environment of spin qubits, which we illustrate by acquisition of electron spin resonance spectra of single NV centres in various settings.

Abstract:We report an experimental and theoretical study of the evolution of vibrational coherence in a thermal ensemble of nitrogen molecules. Rotational dephasing and rephasing of the vibrational coherence is detected by coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering. The existence of ro-vibrational coupling and the discrete energy spectrum of the rotational bath lead to a whole new class of full and fractional ro-vibrational revivals. Following the rich ro-vibrational dynamics on a nanosecond time scale with sub-picosecond time resolution enables us to determine the second-order ro-vibrational constant $gamma_e$ and assess new possibilities of controlling decoherence.

Abstract:Spin-based quantum information processing makes extensive use of spin-state manipulation. This ranges from dynamical decoupling of nuclear spins in quantum sensing experiments to applying logical gates on qubits in a quantum processor. Here we present an antenna for strong driving in quantum sensing experiments and theoretically address challenges of the strong driving regime. First, we designed and implemented a micron-scale planar spiral RF antenna capable of delivering intense fields to a sample. The planar antenna is tailored for quantum sensing experiments using the diamond's nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center and should be applicable to other solid-state defects. The antenna has a broad bandwidth of 22 MHz, is compatible with scanning probes, and is suitable for cryogenic and ultrahigh vacuum conditions. We measure the magnetic field induced by the antenna and estimate a field-to-current ratio of $113\pm 16$ G/A, representing a x6 increase in efficiency compared to the state-of-the-art. We demonstrate the antenna by driving Rabi oscillations in $^1$H spins of an organic sample on the diamond surface and measure $^1$H Rabi frequencies of over 500 kHz, i.e., $\mathrm{\pi}$-pulses shorter than 1 $\mu s$ - faster than previously reported in NV-based nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Finally, we discuss the implications of driving spins with a field tilted from the transverse plane in a regime where the driving amplitude is comparable to the spin-state splitting, such that the rotating wave approximation does not describe the dynamics well. We present a recipe to optimize pulse fidelity in this regime based on a phase and offset-shifted sine drive, that may be optimized without numerical optimization procedures or precise modeling of the experiment. We consider this approach in a range of driving amplitudes and show that it is particularly efficient in the case of a tilted driving field.

Abstract:We demonstrate coherent quantum control of a single spin driven by the motion of a mechanical resonator. The motion of a mechanical resonator is magnetically coupled to the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. Synchronization of spin-addressing protocols to the motion of the driven oscillator is used to fully exploit the coherence of this hybrid mechanical-spin system. We demonstrate applications of this coherent mechanical spin-control technique to nanoscale scanning magnetometry.

Abstract:We present theoretical and experimental progress towards a new approach for the precision spectroscopy, coherent manipulation and state-to-state chemistry of single isolated molecular ions in the gas phase. Our method consists of a molecular beam for creating packets of rotationally cold neutrals from which a single molecule is state-selectively ionized and trapped inside a radiofrequency ion trap. In addition to the molecular ion, a single co-trapped atomic ion is used to cool the molecular external degrees of freedom to the ground state of the trap and to detect the molecular state using state-selective coherent motional excitation from a modulated optical-dipole force acting on the molecule. We present a detailed discussion and theoretical characterization of the present approach. We simulate the molecular signal experimentally using a single atomic ion indicating that different rovibronic molecular states can be resolved and individually detected with our method. The present approach for the coherent control and non-destructive detection of the quantum state of a single molecular ion opens up new perspectives for precision spectroscopies relevant for, e.g., tests of fundamental physical theories and the development of new types of clocks based on molecular vibrational transitions. It will also enable the observation and control of chemical reactions of single particles on the quantum level. While focusing on N$_2^+$ as a prototypical example in the present work, our method is applicable to a wide range of diatomic and polyatomic molecules.

Abstract:The possibility of coherent radiation by molecular magnets is investigated. It is shown that to realize the coherent radiation, it is necessary to couple the considered sample to a resonant electric circuit. A theory for describing this phenomenon is developed, based on a realistic microscopic Hamiltonian, including the Zeeman terms, single-site anisotropy, and dipole interactions. The role of hyperfine interactions between molecular and nuclear spins is studied. Numerical solutions of the spin evolution equations are presented.

Abstract:Recently, rotation sensors utilizing the nuclear spins of nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond have been demonstrated. However, these devices are power-intensive and challenging to integrate into small chip-based radiofrequency antennas and circuits necessary for controlling nuclear spins or producing relatively high magnetic fields. To address this issue, the coherent manipulation of nuclear spins via coherent population trapping at moderate magnetic fields using microwave fields has been successfully demonstrated in isotopically pure diamond. In this work, we demonstrate that a similar technique can be applied to a diamond plate with a natural abundance of carbon-13, which holds significant potential for practical sensing applications. Although the forbidden resonances required for coherent control were only partially observed, coherent population trapping was successfully demonstrated at both visible and invisible transitions, with an apparent contrast of up to 98 +- 11% and a true contrast of approximately 35 +-7%. This finding confirms the feasibility of coherent nuclear spin control even in diamond plates with naturally occurring carbon-13.

Probing strong coupling between a microwave cavity and a spin ensemble with Raman heterodyne spectroscopy

Abstract:Raman heterodyne spectroscopy is a powerful tool for characterizing the energy and dynamics of spins. The technique uses an optical pump to transfer coherence from a spin transition to an optical transition where the coherent emission is more easily detected. Here Raman heterodyne spectroscopy is used to probe an isotopically purified ensemble of erbium dopants in a yttrium orthosilicate (Y2SiO5) crystal coupled to a microwave cavity. Because the erbium electron spin transition is strongly coupled to the microwave cavity, we observed Raman heterodyne signals at the resonant frequencies of the hybrid spin-cavity modes (polaritons) rather than the bare erbium spin-transition frequency. Using the coupled system, we made saturation recovery measurements of the ground-state spin relaxation time T1=10±3 s and also observed Raman heterodyne signals using an excited state spin transition. Abstract:The spin activity in macromolecules such as DNA and oligopeptides, in the context of the Chiral Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) has been proposed to be due to the atomic Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) and the associated chiral symmetry of the structures. This coupling, associated with carbon, nitrogen and oxygen atoms in biological molecules, albeit small (meV), can be enhanced by the geometry, and strong local polarization effects such as hydrogen bonding (HB). A novel way to manipulate the spin degree of freedom is by modifying the spectrum using a coupling to the appropriate electromagnetic radiation field. Here we use the Floquet formalism in order to show how the half filled band Hamiltonian for DNA, can be modulated by the radiation to produce a up to a tenfold increase of the effective SOC once the intrinsic coupling is present. On the other hand, the chiral model, once incorporating the orbital angular momentum of electron motion on the helix, opens a gap for different helicity states (helicity splitting) that chooses spin polarization according to transport direction and chirality, without breaking time reversal symmetry. The observed effects are feasible in physically reasonable parameter ranges for the radiation field amplitude and frequency.

Realization of exciton-mediated optical spin-orbit interaction in organic microcrystalline resonators

Abstract:The ability to control the spin-orbit interaction of light in optical microresonators is of fundamental importance for future photonics. Organic microcrystals, due to their giant optical anisotropy, play a crucial role in spin-optics and topological photonics. Here we realize controllable and wavelength-dependent Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction, attributed to the anisotropic excitonic response in an optical microcavity filled with an organic microcrystalline. We also investigate the transition of the spin-orbit interaction from dominant photonic type caused by the splitting of the transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes to spin-orbit interaction of the Rashba-Dresselhaus type. The interplay of the two allows us to engineer the spin-orbit interaction of light in organic microcavities, which besides its fundamental interest promises applications in spin-controlled on-chip integrated nanophotonic elements, towards exploiting non-magnetic and low-cost spin-photonic devices.

Coherent spin dynamics between electron and nucleus within a single atom

Abstract:The nuclear spin, being much more isolated from the environment than its electronic counterpart, enables quantum experiments with prolonged coherence times and presents a gateway towards uncovering the intricate dynamics within an atom. These qualities have been demonstrated in a variety of nuclear spin qubit architectures, albeit with limited control over the direct environment of the nuclei. As a contrasting approach, the combination of electron spin resonance (ESR) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) provides a bottom-up platform to study the fundamental properties of nuclear spins of single atoms on a surface. However, access to the time evolution of these nuclear spins, as was recently demonstrated for electron spins, remained a challenge. Here, we present an experiment resolving the nanosecond coherent dynamics of a hyperfine-driven flip-flop interaction between the spin of an individual nucleus and that of an orbiting electron. We use the unique local controllability of the magnetic field emanating from the STM probe tip to bring the electron and nuclear spins in tune, as evidenced by a set of avoided level crossings in ESR-STM. Subsequently, we polarize both spins through scattering of tunnelling electrons and measure the resulting free evolution of the coupled spin system using a DC pump-probe scheme. The latter reveals a complex pattern of multiple interfering coherent oscillations, providing unique insight into the atom's hyperfine physics. The ability to trace the coherent hyperfine dynamics with atomic-scale structural control adds a new dimension to the study of on-surface spins, offering a pathway towards dynamic quantum simulation of low-dimensional magnonics.

Abstract:We present a scheme to obtain the coherently enhanced Raman scattering in atomic vapor which is induced by a spin wave initially written by a weak write laser. The enhancement of Raman scattering is dependent on the number and the spatial distribution of the flipped atoms generated by the weak write laser. Such an enhanced Raman scattering may have practical applications in quantum information, nonlinear optics and laser spectroscopy because of its simplicity.

Abstract:Nuclear spins in the solid state are both a cause of decoherence and a valuable resource for spin qubits. In this work, we demonstrate control of isolated 29Si nuclear spins in silicon carbide (SiC) to create an entangled state between an optically active divacancy spin and a strongly coupled nuclear register. We then show how isotopic engineering of SiC unlocks control of single weakly coupled nuclear spins and present an ab initio method to predict the optimal isotopic fraction that maximizes the number of usable nuclear memories. We bolster these results by reporting high-fidelity electron spin control (F = 99.984(1)%), alongside extended coherence times (Hahn-echo T2 = 2.3 ms, dynamical decoupling T2DD > 14.5 ms), and a >40-fold increase in Ramsey spin dephasing time (T2*) from isotopic purification. Overall, this work underlines the importance of controlling the nuclear environment in solid-state systems and links single photon emitters with nuclear registers in an industrially scalable material. Isotope engineering of silicon carbide leads to control of nuclear spins associated with single divacancy centres and extended electron spin coherence.
