Abstract:Using metasurfaces to control the wave propagation at will has been very successful over the broad electromagnetic spectrum in recent years. By encoding specially designed abrupt changes of electromagnetic parameters into metasurfaces, such as phase and amplitude, nearly arbitrary control over the output wavefronts could be realized. Constituted by a single- or fewlayer of planar structures, metasurfaces are straightforward in design and fabrication, thus promising many realistic applications. Moreover, such control concept can be further extended to the surface wave regime. In this review, we present our recent progress on metasurfaces capable of tailoring the propagation of both free-space and surface terahertz waves. Following an introduction of the basic concept and theory, a number of unique terahertz metasurfaces are presented, showing the ability in devising ultra-thin and compact functional terahertz components.

Free‐Standing Single‐Layer Metasurface for Efficient and Broadband Tailoring of Terahertz Wavefront

Abstract:During the past decade, metasurfaces have provided a versatile platform for controlling the amplitude, phase, and polarization of electromagnetic waves, thus showing great potential for developing compact photonic devices. However, compact and broadband terahertz (THz) components are still scarce for high-speed communication and spectroscopy analysis. Here, a free-standing metasurface is designed to realize broadband and efficient wavefront manipulation in the THz regime. The proposed metasurface consists of a single patterned metallic layer on an ultra-thin flexible substrate. The full-span phase control of circularly cross-polarized waves can be achieved based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase mechanism only by spatially varying the element orientation. Besides, it can operate in a broadband range of 0.35-1.21 THz (relative bandwidth of 111%), with the efficiency approaching the theoretical limit of the ultra-thin single-layer metasurface. It is demonstrated that the free-standing metasurface can be used for numerous applications, including but not limited to THz beam steering, focusing, and vortex generation. The broadband performances allow the pulsed spectral imaging system to record the evolution process of broadband vortex beam in real-time. The proposed metasurface may trigger many exciting opportunities in THz wireless communication, medicine, and spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:In article number 1800081, Lei Zhou, Lin Chen, and co-workers propose an alternative approach to realize high-efficiency transmission-mode metasurfaces to control electromagnetic wave-fronts, based on hyperbolic metamaterial waveguides. An anomalous refracted beam is realized with a conversion efficiency of 42.9% in the microwave region and 77.9% in the near infrared region. This work may advance a new class of research to develop electromagnetic waves functional devices based on hyperbolic metamaterials, particularly at high frequencies, with the existing fabrication technology.

Abstract:We propose a novel method for high efficiency wavefront control by utilizing insulator-metal and metal insulator-metal metamaterial. Based on such method, high efficiency anomalous reflection and planar focus lens are achieved in microwave region. Moreover, we demonstrate that such wavefront control can also be used in near-field optics with realizing an almost perfect the conversion of propagating waves into surface waves.

Abstract:Catenary optics, as a new development object in the field of subwavelength optics, has been paid close attention and studied by scientists since it was proposed. As a two-dimensional planar structure, metasurface can realize the free control of electromagnetic wave in space. Traditional metasurface structures are often designed with discrete unit structures, which process is complicated and prone to error. In this paper, we introduce the catenary structure and use the principle of continuous geometric phase and the all-dielectric material silicon to design and optimize the catenary structure at 2 THz frequency, thereby realizing efficient transmission functional metasurfaces such as abnormal deflectors and focusing lenses that can generate Bessel beams. By optimizing the unit of catenary structure, the generation of parasitic transmission phase can be effectively avoided, and the working efficiency of the metasurfaces can be effectively improved. It is believed that the design in our work may pave the way for wavefront manipulation of high-performance terahertz waves and has potential for broadband terahertz devices.

Abstract:Dynamically controlling terahertz (THz) wavefronts in a designable fashion is highly desired in practice. However, available methods working at microwave frequencies do not work well in the THz regime due to lacking suitable tunable elements with submicrometer sizes. Here, instead of locally controlling individual meta-atoms in a THz metasurface, we show that rotating different layers (each exhibiting a particular phase profile) in a cascaded metadevice at different speeds can dynamically change the effective Jones-matrix property of the whole device, thus enabling extraordinary manipulations on the wavefront and polarization characteristics of a THz beam impinging on the device. After illustrating our strategy based on model calculations, we experimentally demonstrate two proof-of-concept metadevices, each consisting of two carefully designed all-silicon transmissive metasurfaces exhibiting different phase profiles. Rotating two metasurfaces inside the fabricated devices at different speeds, we experimentally demonstrate that the first metadevice can efficiently redirect a normally incident THz beam to scan over a wide solid-angle range, while the second one can dynamically manipulate both the wavefront and polarization of a THz beam. Our results pave the way to achieving dynamic control of THz beams, which is useful in many applications, such as THz radar, and bio- and chemical sensing and imaging.
Unidirectional guided-wave-driven metasurfaces for arbitrary wavefront control

Abstract:Metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength electromagnetic microstructures, known as meta-atoms, are capable of reshaping the wavefronts of incident beams in desired manners, making them great candidates for revolutionizing conventional optics. However, the requirement for external light excitation and the resonant nature of meta-atoms make it difficult to fully integrate metasurfaces on-chip or to control wavefronts at deep-subwavelength scales. Here, we introduce the concept and design of a new class of metasurfaces, driven by unidirectional guided waves, and being capable of arbitrary wavefront control based on the unique dispersion properties of unidirectional guided waves rather than resonant meta-atoms. Upon experimentally demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of the unidirectional nature of our designs in the microwave regime, we numerically validate this new principle through the design of several microwave meta-devices using metal-air-gyromagnetic unidirectional surface magnetoplamons, agilely converting unidirectional guided modes into the wavefronts of 3D Bessel beams, focused waves, and controllable vortex beams. We also numerically demonstrate sub-diffraction focusing, which is currently beyond the capability of conventional metasurfaces. Furthermore, we directly show how these concepts can be transferred to the terahertz regime, and discuss their feasibility in the optical domain, too. Based on this nonresonant (that is, broadband) mechanism and on standard plasmonic platforms, our metasurfaces can be integrated on-chip, enabling the manipulation of electromagnetic waves on deep subwavelength scales and over wide frequency ranges, thereby opening up new opportunities for applications in communications, remote sensing, displays, and so forth.

Abstract:Metasurfaces offer great opportunities to control electromagnetic (EM) waves, but currently most metadevices work either in pure reflection or pure transmission mode, leaving half of the EM space completely unexplored. Here, we propose an alternative type of metasurface, composed of specifically designed meta-atoms with polarization-dependent transmission and reflection properties, to efficiently manipulate EM waves in the full space. As a proof of concept, three microwave metadevices are designed, fabricated, and experimentally characterized. The first two metadevices can bend or focus EM waves at different sides (i.e., transmission and reflection sides) of the metasurfaces, depending on the incident polarization, while the third one changes from a wave bender for the reflected wave to a focusing lens for the transmitted wave as the excitation polarization is rotated, with all of these functionalities exhibiting very high efficiencies (in the range of 85%-91%) and total thickness similar to lambda/8. Our findings significantly expand the capabilities of metasurfaces in controlling EM waves, and can stimulate high-performance multifunctional metadevices facing more challenging and diversified application demands.
Bifunctional Manipulation of Terahertz Waves with High‐Efficiency Transmissive Dielectric Metasurfaces

Abstract:Multifunctional terahertz (THz) devices in transmission mode are highly desired in integration-optics applications, but conventional devices are bulky in size and inefficient. While ultra-thin multifunctional THz devices are recently demonstrated based on reflective metasurfaces, their transmissive counterparts suffer from severe limitations in efficiency and functionality. Here, based on high aspect-ratio silicon micropillars exhibiting wide transmission-phase tuning ranges with high transmission-amplitudes, a set of dielectric metasurfaces is designed and fabricated to achieve efficient spin-multiplexed wavefront controls on THz waves. As a benchmark test, the photonic-spin-Hall-effect is experimentally demonstrated with a record high absolute efficiency of 92% using a dielectric metasurface encoded with geometric phases only. Next, spin-multiplexed controls on circularly polarized THz beams (e.g., anomalous refraction and focusing) are experimentally demonstrated with experimental efficiency reaching 88%, based on a dielectric meta-device encoded with both spin-independent resonant phases and spin-dependent geometric phases. Finally, high-efficiency spin-multiplexed dual holographic images are experimentally realized with the third meta-device encoded with both resonant and geometric phases. Both near-field and far-field measurements are performed to characterize these devices, yielding results in agreement with full-wave simulations. The study paves the way to realize multifunctional, high-performance, and ultra-compact THz devices for applications in biology sensing, communications, and so on.

Abstract:Freely controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves in desired manners are not only highly important for scientific researches, but also an urgent need in the fields of communications, energy, national defense, etc. To overcome the limitations of natural materials on controlling EM waves, people proposed to construct artificial metamaterials based on subwavelength-sized microstructures with tailored EM properties. Metamaterials have exhibited many fascinating EM effects, such as negative refraction, optical cloaking, and so on. However, after years of development, metamaterials still suffer from many challenges including complexities in structures, high losses, difficulties in optical integrations, etc. Recently, together with other scientists, we proposed the concept of metasurfaces. Utilizing the abrupt phase changes of EM wave scatterings at the meta-atoms and fully exploring the microscopic order of the meta-atoms arrangement, metasurfaces have exhibited much stronger control capabilities on EM wave amplitude, phase, polarization and wavefront distribute, overcoming the bottleneck issues faced by bulk metamaterials. In this article, we will mainly review our key research works on using metasurfaces to control EM waves, including polarization control, wavefront control and dynamic control.
Manipulating Wave Propagation with Geometric Metasurfaces: Fundamentals and Applications

Abstract:The emerging field of metasurfaces has offered unprecedented functionalities for shaping wave fronts and optical responses. Here, we realize a new class of metasurfaces with nanorod array, which can generate abrupt interfacial phase changes to control local wave front at subwavelength scale. The physical mechanism under the phase modulation is geometry phase in essence, thus can achieve broadband operation, as well as helicity-dependent property. Multiple applications have been demonstrated, such as anomalous refraction, ultrathin dual-polarity metalenses, helicity-dependent unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation, and three-dimensional (3D) holography.
Terahertz generations of transmissive deflection, focusing, and orbital angular momentum with polarization conversion

Abstract:By coding meta -atom with discrete phase, electromagnetic wavefront can be flexibly manipulated with the pre-designed coding sequence. In this work, transmissive metasurfaces are proposed to achieve wavefront reconfiguration with polarization conversion for terahertz wave. Based on composite structures of metallic resonators and polyimides, the designed meta -atoms are capable of polarization conversion and 360° phase modulation by changing notch angle and rotation angle of resonators at 2.0 THz. Then, three types of metasurfaces are designed. Firstly, transmissive wavefront of gradient metasurface is reconstructed through periodic alignment of eight meta -atoms along x axis. This metasurface realizes anomalous transmission and transforms x-polarized incidence to y-polarized wave. Secondly, two focusing lenses are implemented, and they realize single-focusing and dual-focusing under x-polarized incidence. Finally, two vortex beam generators are proposed with orbital angular momentum modes of l = 1 and l = 2 in channel of cross polarization. Our designs may be applied in the fields of terahertz communication, focusing, and encryption.

The effect of magnetostatic field on the metasurface, however, is relatively lack of study. Here, a metasurface potentially capable of manipulating the wavefront of terahertz (THz) wave with the external magnetostatic field is proposed, which consists of the doped InAs cut-wire resonator with large Hall coefficient. With the external magnetic field varying from 0Gs to 3000Gs, the simulated resonant frequency of the metasurface shifts from 2.25THz to 1.87THz, and the phase increases from -181 to -89 at 2THz. With proper distribution of the megnetostatic field, the phase of the transmitted THz wave can thus be spatially configured, leading to effective manipulation of THz wavefront. With the same illuminance of a plane wave at 2THz, the metasurface distributed with linear-like magnetic field bends the THz wave to an angle about 10, while the one with the hyperbolic-like distribution focuses the plane wave with the focal length of 0.5mm. Ultra-broadband high-efficiency cross-polarization conversion and amplitude-phase manipulable multi-functional wavefront manipulation based on terahertz metasurface

Abstract:Abstract Drawing upon the physical phenomenon of polarization transformation, this paper proposes an ultra-broadband, high-efficiency linear polarization converter composed of a metallic grating, an L-shaped metallic patch, and a dielectric substrate. The polarization conversion properties have been scrutinized using the finite element numerical simulation software CST. The computational outcomes reveal that the polarization converter operates within the frequency range of 0.5 THz to 1.8 THz, exhibiting a relative bandwidth of 113%, a transmission coefficient exceeding 0.87, a polarization conversion efficiency approaching 100%, and a phase coverage spanning 360°. Furthermore, a Fabry-Perot interference model was established utilizing Matlab to corroborate the concurrence between the theoretical analysis and the numerical findings. The polarization converter metasurface amalgamates both phase and transmission amplitude variations to accomplish not only a two-dimensional multi-channel focusing lens operating between 1.55 THz and 1.65 THz, but also a spatial imaging capability utilizing transmission amplitude variation within the 0.5 THz to 1.15 THz range. The outcomes demonstrate that the devised metasurface is impervious to the polarization direction of the incident wave, exhibiting ultra-broadband and high transmission efficacy, thus providing novel insights for the versatility of terahertz wave polarization and phase manipulation.

Abstract:The research on terahertz wave manipulation based on metasurfaces has gradually deepened, and the number of functions or electromagnetic control dimensions in a single device is constantly increasing. For the spatial dimension of terahertz field regulation, its design degrees of freedom have been expanded from a single transverse plane to the propagation path. In this paper, we propose a novel circularly polarization multiplexed metasurface for dual channel terahertz wave transmission control. Based on the spatial integration of two heterogeneous meta-atoms, which are spin-decoupled and isotropic, respectively, there are four phase channels that can be used at the same time, thus achieving different switching between vector and scalar beams in different circularly polarization channels along the optical path. For linearly polarized wave incidence, the device exhibits conversion between different vector beams longitudinally. To control more electric field components, we combine focused wavefront design with vector or scalar fields and utilize the focusing induced spin–orbit coupling effect, then complex amplitude switching of longitudinal electric field components is obtained. This article extends the manipulation of terahertz waves along the propagation trajectory based on metasurface from single to dual channel for the first time, providing a reference for the design of multifunctional meta-device in terahertz band.

Abstract:Terahertz wave manipulations, especially the phase manipulations, through metasurfaces has attracted considerable interests. Here, we develop a terahertz beam steering device using the liquid-crystal (LC)-integrated programmable metasurface. Specifically, a reflective-type 1 bit metasurface element is designed by employing a multilayer structure composed of metallic back plate-LC-complementary split ring resonator (CSRR). Numerical simulations show that, at the optimized operation frequency of 0.675 THz, the developed metasurface element has a nearly 180° phase difference between unbiased and biased states with close reflection amplitudes. Furthermore, a one-dimensional programmable metasurface array with 32 independently controlled subarrays is designed and fabricated using the lithography technology. Both simulated and measured far-field scattering patterns of the metasurface certify the anomalous beam reflection and wide-angle beam steering performances. Nevertheless, the optimal frequency red shifts to 0.645 THz in the experiment. This work may advance the application of metasurfaces in terahertz beam manipulation devices.

Abstract:We propose a type of ultra-thin metasurfaces composed of rectangular graphene patches supporting orthogonal plasmonic resonances, which can work in transmission or reflection modes for dynamic terahertz wavefront manipulation with high polarization conversion ratio. By controlling the response of each patch via electrical biasing, the phase of the output wave can be tuned in a wide range over 180° while keeping its amplitude high and relatively stable. We demonstrate several functional devices based on such metasurfaces: a linear polarization converter with nearly 100% polarization conversion ratio, a switchable anomalous wave deflection device, and a dual-polarity focusing mirror with the focal spot tunable in both the transversal and longitudinal directions.

Such a strategy demonstrates experimentally the evolutionary trend from the homogeneous to the inhomogeneous polarization states along the propagation direction. The designed minimalist metasurface is believed to open a new window for manipulating inhomogeneous polarization states and provides a fundamental mechanism for developing ultra‐thin, compact, and high‐performance devices with pervasive applicability.

Abstract:Freely tailoring the wavefronts of surface waves (SWs) plays a vital role in on-chip photonics applications, but diffraction-optics based devices usually exhibit limited tuning functionalities and low working efficiencies. Here, we propose a new strategy to manipulate the near-field wavefronts of SWs with Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) metasurfaces exhibiting predesigned phase profiles. As a SW beam flows across such a metasurface, waves scattered by different PB meta-atoms interfere with each other, forming a new SW wavefront under appropriate wavevector matching condition. As a proof of concept, we design and fabricate a series of PB metasurfaces working in the microwave regime and experimentally demonstrate that they can efficiently realize SW manipulations, including deflection, focusing, Bessel beam, and Airy beam generations. These findings may inspire the realization of highly miniaturized on-chip devices for integrated photonics applications.

Abstract:Subwavelength-thin metasurfaces have shown great promises for the control of optical wavefronts, thus opening new pathways for the development of efficient flat optics. In particular, Huygens' metasurfaces based on all-dielectric resonant meta-atoms have already shown a huge potential for practical applications with their polarization insensitivity and high transmittance efficiency. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a polarization insensitive holographic Huygens' metasurface based on dielectric resonant meta-atoms capable of complex wavefront control at telecom wavelengths. Our metasurface produces a hologram image in the far-field with 82% transmittance efficiency and 40% imaging efficiency. Such efficient complex wavefront control shows that Huygens' metasurfaces based on resonant dielectric meta-atoms are a big step towards practical applications of metasurfaces in wavefront design related technologies, including computer-generated holograms, ultra-thin optics, security and data storage devices.
