Abstract:We have read with great interest the recently published article titled “Red cell distribution width is associated with hospital mortality in unselected critically ill patients” by Zhang et al. (1). In that very well-presented article, the authors aimed to investigate the role of red cell distribution width (RDW) in prediction hospital mortality in critically ill patients. They concluded that RDW measured on ICU entry is an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients and higher RDW was associated with longer length of ICU stay, and the change of RDW in a short interval provided no additional prognostic value in critically patients. We would like to thank Zhang et al. (1) for their comprehensive contribution.

Abstract:Introduction Several biomarkers have proven prognostic value for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients. Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with several diseases and all-cause mortality and suggested as an independent predictor of Ischemic Stroke severity and outcome. This study aimed to investigate RDW as an independent predictor of functional outcome and death in the 3 months following AIS. Methods Patients with AIS were divided in four groups according to the quartile of the RDW value at admission. Baseline characteristics of patients in each RDW quartile were compared by Chi-square or Kruskal-Wallis tests, as applicable. We prospectively analyzed the patients for functional outcome in the 3 months following the event. Functional outcome (dichotomized as independent [0-2] or dependent [>2] according to the modified Rankin Scale score) and 90-day mortality was compared between the 4 groups. To conduct this evaluation, univariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis for functional independence and mortality at 3 months was conducted, considering the variables previously identified as potential confounders. Results The study's final population was of 416 patients. The patients in higher RDW quartiles were older (p<0.001), had lower blood hemoglobin (p<0.001), higher C reactive protein levels (p=0.017), higher BNP values (p<0.001) and more frequently suffered from atrial fibrillation (p=0.015) and heart failure (p=0.004). Univariate analysis showed a negative association between RDW-Q4 and independence at 3 months (p=0.024), which wasn't verified in the multivariate analysis (p=0.871). Univariate analysis also identified a positive association between RDW-Q4 and 90-day mortality (p=0.049), which was not confirmed in the multivariate analysis (p=0.289). Conclusions When adjusted to potential confounders, RDW does not predict functional outcome or death in the 90 days after acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract:The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of red blood cell (RBC) size heterogeneity, which is easily calculated by dividing the SD of erythrocyte volumes for the mean corpuscular volume. Recent reporter suggested that, besides haematological diseases and anaemia, many human disorders may be closely associated with the elevated RDW. A literature review has revealed the RDW may be closely related to the development of ischaemic stroke, carotid artery atherosclerosis and cerebral embolism. Higher RDW could independently predict adverse outcomes in patients in these conditions.

Abstract:Background RDW (red cell distribution width) has been reported to been associated with the prognosis of patients with cardiovascular diseases. However, RDW is often overlooked by clinicians in treating patients with non-cardiovascular diseases, especially in an emergency. The objective of this systematic review is to explore the prognostic value of RDW in non-cardiovascular emergencies.Methods PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were systematically searched from their inception to December 31, 2015. We included studies examining the relationship between RDW and mortality rate by adjusting important covariables in noncardiovascular emergencies. All included studies were divided into three groups. Group A: general critically ill patients; Group B: patients with infectious disease; Group C: other conditions. We extracted each study' characteristics, outcomes, covariables, and other items independently.Results A total of 32 studies were eligible for inclusion in our meta-analysis. Six studies belonged to Group A, 9 studies belonged to Group B and 17 studies belonged to Group C. Among these included studies, RDW was assessed as a continuous variable (per 1% increase) in 16 studies, as a binary variable in 8 studies, and as a categorical variable in 8 studies. In addition, AUCs (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) of RDW for predicting mortality were reported in 25 studies. All studies were published between 2011 -2015. The qualities of included 32 studies were moderate or high.Conclusion The present systematic review indicates that the increased RDW is significantly associated with a higher mortality rate in an non-cardiovascular emergency. The low cost and readily accessible of this laboratory variable may strengthen its usefulness in daily practice in the future.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Red cell distribution width (RDW) is a variability of red cell sizes and has been associated with outcomes in many clinical settings. Its prognostic value in intensive care unit (ICU) has been reported but requires confirmation. The study aimed to investigate the role of RDW in predicting hospital mortality in critically ill patients.METHODS:This is a retrospective study conducted in a 24-bed ICU of a tertiary teaching hospital. Data on demographic characteristics and laboratory measurements were collected from medical information database. Baseline variables were compared between survivors and nonsurvivors. The primary endpoint was hospital mortality; and ICU length of stays (LOS) were compared between patients with RDW >14.8% and ≤14.8%. The predictive value of RDW was also measured using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Two-sided P<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.RESULTS:A total of 1,539 patients were enrolled during study period, including 1,084 survivors and 455 nonsurvivors. In univariate analysis, variables such as age, sex, primary diagnosis, C-reactive protein (CRP), RDW and albumin were significantly associated with hospital mortality. RDW remained significantly associated with mortality after adjustment for sex, age, Charlson index albumin and CRP, with an odds ratio of 1.1 (95% CI: 1.03-1.16). Diagnostic performance of RDW in predicting mortality appeared to be suboptimal (AU-ROC: 0.62). Changes in RDW during a short follow up period were not associated with mortality.CONCLUSIONS:RDW measured on ICU entry is associated with hospital mortality. Patients with higher RDW will have longer LOS in ICU. Repeated measurements of RDW provide no additional prognostic value in critically ill patients.

Association Between Red Blood Cell Distribution width and Long-Term Mortality in Patients with Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Abstract:Background: The association between the red cell distribution width (RDW) and long-term mortality in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has not been clearly established. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with ICH admitted to two tertiary hospitals. The primary outcome was long-term mortality, and the effect of elevated RDW (RDW coefficient of variation [RDW-CV]; RDW standard deviation [RDW-SD]) on outcomes was assessed by using logistic regression analysis. Serum RDW levels was divided into four levels by quartiles (the lowest quartile [Q1]; the highest quartile [Q4]). Results: This study included 4223 patients with ICH. After adjustment for potential confounders, admission RDW-CV (Quartile 4 [Q4] vs. Quartile 1 [Q1], adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.61, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34-1.92) and median RDW-CV within the first month after admission (Q4 vs. Q1, adjusted HR 1.69, 95% CI 1.40-2.04) were both associated with 1-year mortality following ICH. Parallel results were found for RDW-SD. In the receiver operating characteristic analyses, both RDW-CV and RDW-SD outperformed some inflammatory biomarkers, such as albumin, hemoglobin, total cholesterol, platelet count, lymphocyte, and fibrinogen, in predicting long-term mortality following ICH. Additionally, compared with admission RDW, median RDW-CV and RDW-SD (areas under the curve [AUC] 0.668 and 0.652, respectively) was superior to predict long-term mortality, (P < 0.001). Furthermore, median RDW-CV level was a better predictor than RDW-SD (P = 0.03). Conclusions: In patients with ICH, RDW independently predicted long-term mortality. Median RDW levels within the first month after admission were better predictors of long-term mortality compared with RDW levels on admission. Additionally, median RDW-CV showed superior predictive capacity than median RDW-SD for long-term mortality following ICH.

Abstract:Background: Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a cardiovascular biomarker. We evaluated the association between RDW and cerebral stroke risk in hemodialysis patients. Methods: A cohort of 442 adult patients on hemodialysis was studied. Strokes were defined according to ICD-10 diagnosis codes. Routine complete blood counts, evaluated every 3-6 months, were used for RDW values. Results: Among 442 hemodialysis patients, during the 50-month follow-up, there were 62 cases (14.0%) of cerebral stroke: 41 (9.3%) with cerebral infarction and 21 (4.8%) with cerebral hemorrhage. Compared with nonstroke patients, a significantly higher RDW was measured in patients with cerebral stroke and cerebral infarction. However, no significant difference was seen in RDW between patients with cerebral hemorrhage and nonstroke patients. After adjustment by age, hypertension, albumin, Charlson Comorbidity Score, and C-reactive protein in different multivariable Cox regression models, patients with the highest mean RDW quartile had a 2.55-fold (hazard ratio = 3.55; 95% confidence interval: 1.33-9.51) higher risk of developing cerebral infarction relative to those with the lowest mean RDW quartile. RDW was not an independent risk factor for cerebral hemorrhage. Conclusions: Increased RDW is an independent risk factor of cerebral infarction in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract:We investigated the relationship among red cell distribution width (RDW), to total serum calcium (TSC) ratio (RCR), and in-hospital mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This study was a retrospective analysis. The data of 2700 AIS patients was retrospectively analyzed from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care database (version IV). The main outcome of interest was in-hospital mortality. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to determine whether RCR was independently associated with in-hospital mortality. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to plot the survival curves for RCR. Subgroup analyses were performed to measure the mortality across various subgroups. The area under curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was calculated to ascertain the quality of RCR as a predictor of in-hospital mortality in patients with AIS. In the multivariate analysis, statistically significant differences were identified in age, ethnicity, length of ICU stay, mechanical ventilation, sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, RDW, hemoglobin, RCR, whether taking anticoagulants, hyperlipidemia, and atrial fibrillation (P 1.83 after adjustment for age, gender, BMI, ethnicity. The area under curve (AUC) of RCR was 0.715. A higher RCR was associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality in patients with AIS.

Abstract:Objective To explore the prognostic values of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).Methods 215 cases of patients with AMI(AMI group) and 180 cases of healthy controls(control group) were enrolled. Red blood cell count (RBC),hemoglobin (Hb),RDW and write blood cell count (WBC) were detected by using full automatic hemocyte analyzer.Creatinine(Cr),triglyceridesTG),total cholesterol(TC),high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) were detected by full automatic biochemical analyzer.Results Compared with the control group,RDW in the AMI group was significantly increased(P<0.01),and the levels of Hb,WBC,Cr and TG were significant different between the two groups(P<0.05). All patients were divided into 4 groups according to quartiles of RDW,and one-factor analysis indicated that age and rates of unfavourable prognosis were both positively correlated with RDW,but Hb was negatively correlated with RDW. There was no significant difference in sex,WBC,Cr and TG between the groups. As the deterioration of heart function became severe,the level of RDW increased.Conclusion RDW could be helpful for judging the prognosis of AMI and increase of RDW portends adverse prognosis.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe inflammatory disorder of the lungs and is associated with oxidative damage. However, red blood cell distribution width (RDW), as an indicator of body response to inflammation and oxidative stress, has not been studied for its relationship with ARDS as diagnosed by the Berlin definition.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objectives</h3><p>To examine the value of RDW in predicting the prognosis of in patients with ARDS.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>This is a retrospective study based on the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) database. Berlin-defined ARDS patients using mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours were selected using structured query language. The primary statistical methods were propensity score matching and sensitivity analysis, including an inverse probability weighting model to ensure the robustness of our findings.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>A total of 529 intensive care unit (ICU) patients with ARDS according to the Berlin definition were enrolled in the study. The adjusted OR showed an adverse effect between the higher RDW group and 30-day mortality [OR 2.33, 95% CI (1.15–4.75), P=0.019]. However, we found that length of ICU stay was not related to RDW (P=0.167), and in the anaemia group, RDW was poorly predictive of 30-day mortality (P=0.307).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>In unselected ARDS patients, higher RDW was associated with higher 30-day mortality rate. Further investigation is required to validate this relationship with prospectively collected data.</p>

Abstract:Predicting the prognosis of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is difficult for many frontline clinicians. The purpose of this study was to determine whether subsequent stroke in TIA patients can be predicted via red blood cell distribution width (RDW).A total of 360 consecutive patients with new-onset TIA in our stroke centre, were enrolled over the period studied. The patients were divided into three groups: 103 TIA patients, 206 ischaemic stroke (IS) patients and 51 patients with haemorrhagic stroke (HS) within 7 days after TIA. Complete blood count, biochemical parameters and brain imaging were performed on all patients.The mean RDW values of patients with IS and HS after TIA were significantly higher than patients with TIA (13.35 ± 1.59 vs 12.84 ± 1.19, 13.32 ± 1.08 vs 12.84 ± 1.19, respectively, all p ≤ .001). In a multivariate model, RDW was independently associated with stroke after TIA (IS: odds ratio (OR) = 2.52, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.46–3.35, p = .002; HS: OR = 1.511, 95% CI = 1.101–2.074, p = .011). Compared to ABCD2 scores, the diagnostic power of RDW in the differentiation of patients with IS after TIA was better (area under curve (AUC): 0.731 vs 0.613, p = .015). When an RDW cut-off value of 13.95% was accepted for differentiating patients with IS from TIA, the sensitivity and specificity were 73.7% and 74.3%, respectively. However, the AUC for the ability of the RDW to predict HS was 0.653 (95% CI = 0.589–0.716; p < .001).The early determination of RDW is a promising, rapid, easy and inexpensive biomarker to predict the subsequent stroke in TIA patients, especially for IS. The most important result of our study is to show that (1) the higher RDW, the earlier the stroke onset and (2) RDW ≥13.95% has a 2.52-fold risk of ischaemic stroke in TIA patients, and RDW ≥12.85% has a 1.51-fold risk of haemorrhagic stroke.As an economic and accessible hematological marker, baseline RDW may serve as a useful biomarker for risk stratification in TIA patients.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: Hip fractures in the elderly pose a considerable health risk and cause concern. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a valuable marker for identifying patients at high risk of age-related mortality and various disorders and diseases. However, its association with poor patient outcomes following hip fractures has yet to be fully established. Hence, the purpose of this meta-analysis was to investigate and gain a better understanding of the relationship between RDW levels and the risk of mortality after hip fractures. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and other databases were comprehensively searched until April 2023 to identify relevant studies. The meta-analysis included observational studies finding the association between RDW at admission or preoperation and short-term and long-term mortality rates following hip fractures. The results were presented in terms of odds ratios (ORs) or hazard ratios (HRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: This meta-analysis included 10 studies involving 5834 patients with hip fractures. Patients with preoperative RDW of over 14.5% had higher risks of 1-year (OR: 5.40, 95% CI: 1.89-15.48, p = 0.002) and 3-month (OR: 2.91, 95% CI: 1.42-5.95, p = 0.004) mortality. Higher admission or preoperative RDW was significantly associated with an 11% higher mortality risk after 1 year (HR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.06-1.17, p < 0.00001). Patients with higher preoperative RDW had a significantly higher risk of 6-month mortality, which was three times that of those with lower preoperative RDW (OR: 3.00, 95% CI: 1.60-5.61, p = 0.0006). Higher preoperative RDW was correlated to a higher 30-day mortality risk (OR: 6.44, 95% CI: 3.32-12.47, p < 0.00001). Conclusions: Greater RDW values at admission or before surgery were associated with a higher risk of short-term and long-term mortality following hip fractures. Because RDW can be easily measured using a routine blood test at a low cost, this parameter is promising as an indicator of mortality in elderly patients with hip fractures.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) in patients with coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A retrospective cohort study (CORFCHD-PCI, [Identifier: ChiCTR-INR-16010153]) of 6050 patients who were hospitalized with a diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) and treated with PCI from January 2008 to December 2016 were enrolled in the study. The primary outcome was long-term mortality after PCI. Clinical follow-up data of participating patients were obtained during an outpatient examination 35.9 ± 22.6 months after PCI. Demographic and clinical data and admission laboratory parameters were recorded, and patients were categorized into two groups according to RDW level (high group ≥13.1%; low group < 13.1%). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed RDW as an independent prognosis factor for cardiac death. The incidence of cardiac death increased 1.33 times in patients in the high RDW group (HR, 1.331; 95% CI, 1.009–1.755, P = 0.043). Kaplan–Meier survival analysis suggested that patients with high RDW tended to have an increased accumulated risk of cardiac death. However, we did not found significant differences in the incidence of long-term mortality (adjusted HR = 1.203[0.941–1.537], P = 0.140), MACCE (adjusted HR = 1.128[0.979–1.301], P = 0.096), MACE (adjusted HR = 1.155[0.994–1.341], P = 0.059), stroke, bleeding events or readmission between the two groups. Abstract:Aims: To examine the association between red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: Three hundred fifty six patients on HD for >3 months were enrolled and followed for 2 years. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the median RDW value. Patient survival and risk factors for mortality were investigated. Results: The 2-year survival rate was significantly lower in the high-RDW group (>14.9%; log-rank = 10.00, p = 0.0016). RDW (hazard ratio (HR) 1.34, 95% CI 1.04-1.71, p = 0.021), hemoglobin (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-1.00, p = 0.023) and albumin (HR 0.90, 95% CI 0.82-0.99, p = 0.026) were independent predictors of mortality. Receiver operating characteristic curves of RDW to predict 2-year mortality had an area under the curve of 0.6487 (95% CI 0.5714-0.7260). Abstract:Introduction: It is crucial to identify predictors of mortality in the early stage of acute ischemic stroke for the oldest old (aged >= 80 years) because of their poor overall survival outcomes. However, limited data are available as the oldest old have often been excluded from previous clinical studies. Hence, we aimed to assess the predictive effect of red blood cell distribution width on in-hospital mortality and the dose-response relationship between the red blood cell distribution width and in-hospital mortality in oldest old with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed in two tertiary hospitals. Patients aged >= 80 years admitted due to acute ischemic stroke from January 1, 2014, to January 31, 2020, were included in the study. We divided the eligible patients into 3 groups with tertiles of red blood cell distribution width. Restrictive cubic spline and robust locally weighted regression analysis were performed to test the dose-response relationship between red blood cell distribution width and the in-hospital mortality risk. All-cause in-hospital mortality was the main study outcome. Results: Overall, 606 patients were included in the final analysis. Red blood cell distribution width was categorized into 3 groups (T1: <13.7%, T2: 13.8-15.7%, and T3: >15.7%). The rationality of this categorization was then validated with restricted cubic spline and robust locally regression smoothing scatterplot, respectively. After adjusting for demographic and clinical features, a higher red blood cell distribution width was independently associated with in-hospital mortality and the hazard ratio (HR) was 3.31 (95% CI 2.47-4.45, p < 0.001). There was a positive dose-response relationship between red blood cell distribution width and mortality risk. Sensitivity analysis identified no conspicuous change in the HR. Conclusions: Red blood cell distribution width may be a valuable and simple measure for predicting in-hospital mortality in oldest old patients with acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract:Background and Purpose: Red cell distribution width (RDW) has been recognized as a prognostic marker in cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Increased RDW is predictive of poor outcome and mortality in acute ischemic stroke patients. However, the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. We aimed to explore the association between RDW, collateral flow, infarct volume growth, final infarct volume (FIV), and clinical outcomes in acute stroke patients with large artery atherosclerosis. Methods: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study based on a prospective registry of consecutive acute ischemic stroke patients within 6 hours of onset. Acute ischemic stroke identified with anterior circulation large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) with complete baseline and follow-up imaging (Non-contrast CT, CT Angiography, Perfusion CT) as well as clinical profiles were enrolled. Collaterals was assessed using the volume ratio between delay time (DT) >3s and DT>6s lesions. Baseline infarct core volume was defined by relative cerebral blood flow<30%. FIV was calculated by manually drawing regions of interest on the follow-up images. Infarct volume growth was determined from FIV minus baseline infarct core volume. A good functional outcome was defined as a 3-month modified Rankin Score of 0-2. The relationship between RDW, collaterals, infarct volume growth, FIV and clinical outcomes were evaluated using multivariate models. Results: A total number of 100 patients were included in this study. Multivariate adjusted general linear models revealed that increased RDW was associated with poorer collaterals (multivariate adjusted coefficient -0.11, 95% CI -0.20 — -0.02, p=0.02) and increased infarct volume growth (multivariate adjusted coefficient 0.06, 95% CI 0.03 — 0.08, p<0.001). No significant relationship was found between RDW and FIV (multivariate adjusted coefficient 0.08, 95% CI -0.01 — 0.13, p=0.08), RDW and clinical outcomes (multivariate adjusted OR 1.66, 95% CI 0.44 — 6.28, p=0.46) probably due to the small sample size. Conclusion: For patients with LAA stroke, high RDW was associated with poorer collateral flow and increased infarct volume growth, which may explain the predictive value of RDW and poor functional outcomes in acute stroke.

Abstract:IMPORTANCE: Higher levels of red cell distribution width (RDW) are associated with adverse outcomes, especially in selected cohorts with or at risk for chronic disease. Whether higher RDW or the related parameter standard deviation of the red blood cell distribution (SD-RBC) can predict a broader range of outcomes in the general population is unknown.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of RDW and SD-RBC with the risk of adverse outcomes in people from the general population.DESIGN: Population-based retrospective cohort study.SETTING: Health care system in a Canadian province (Alberta).PARTICIPANTS: All 3,156,863 adults living in Alberta, Canada with at least one measure of RDW and SD-RBC between 2003 and 2016. Data were analyzed in September 2018.EXPOSURE: RDW and SD-RBC, classified into percentiles (<1, 1-5, 5-25, 25-75, 75-95, 95-99, >99).MAIN OUTCOMES: All-cause death, first myocardial infarction, first stroke or transient ischemic attack, placement into long-term care (LTC), progression to renal replacement therapy (initiation of chronic dialysis or pre-emptive kidney transplantation), incident solid malignancy, and first hospitalization during follow-up.RESULTS: Over median follow-up of 6.8 years, 209,991 of 3,156,863 participants (6.7%) died. The risk of death increased with increasing RDW percentile. After adjustment, and compared to RDW in the 25th to 75th percentiles, the risk of death was lower for participants in the <25th percentiles but higher for participants in the 75th-95th percentiles (HR 1.42, 95% CI 1.40,1.43), the 95th-99th percentiles (HR 1.86, 95% CI 1.83,1.89) and the >99th percentile (HR 2.18, 95% CI 2.12,2.23). Similar results were observed for MI, stroke/TIA, incident cancer, hospitalization and LTC placement, but no association was found between RDW and ESRD. Findings were generally similar for SD-RBC, except that all associations tended to be stronger than for RDW, and both lower and higher values of SD-RBC were independently associated with ESRD.CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: RDW and SD-RBC may be useful as prognostic markers for people in the general population, especially for outcomes related to chronic illness. SD-RBC may be superior to RDW.

Abstract:Background Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) reflects the heterogeneity of red blood cell volume, which reflects the variable width of red blood cell (RBC). RDW has been proved as predictor of mortality among several diseases. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between RDW and mortality of diabetic foot patients. Methods We first collect clinic data from the public database MIMIC-III. Kruskal Wallis rank sum test was used to analyze the association between RDW and DF mortality, and to evaluate the relationship between them. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used for determining the risk factors and prognosis of DF patients. Results A total of 283 patients were included in this study, with an average age of 64.0 [54.0,70.5] years, including 193 males and 90 females. We divided RDW into three groups (high, moderate and low) according to RDW tertiles and then compared the mortality of the three groups. The high RDW group (RDW > 16.8%) had significant higher mortality (P = 0.031). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, RDW, SOFA score and APS are risk factors for death in diabetic foot. After adjusting for confounding factors in model II, RDW remains a particularly strong predictor of mortality. Conclusions We confirm that RDW is an independent predictor of mortality in DF patients,and the higher the RDW, the higher the mortality of DF patients.
