Abstract:Objective To present a meta-analysis of high-quality case-matched studies comparing laparoscopic (LH) and open hepatectomy (OH) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods Studies published up to September 2017 comparing LH and OH for HCC were identified. Selection of high-quality, nonrandomized comparative studies (NRCTs) with case-matched design was based on a validated tool (Methodological Index for Nonrandomized Studies) since no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were published. Morbidity, mortality, operation time, blood loss, hospital stay, margin distance, recurrence, and survival outcomes were compared. Subgroup analyses were carried out according to the surgical extension (minor or major hepatectomy). Results Twenty studies with a total of 830 patients (388 in LH and 442 in OH) were identified. For short-term surgical outcomes, LH showed less morbidity (RR = 0.55; 95% CI, 0.47~0.65; P < 0.01), less mortality (RR = 0.43; 95% CI, 0.18~1.00; P = 0.05), less blood loss (WMD = −93.21 ml, 95% CI, −157.33~−29.09 ml; P < 0.01), shorter hospital stay (WMD = −2.86, 95% CI, −3.63~−2.08; P < 0.01), and comparable operation time (WMD = 9.15 min; 95% CI: −7.61~25.90, P = 0.28). As to oncological outcomes, 5-year overall survival rate was slightly better in LH than OH (HR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.52~0.84, P < 0.01), whereas the 5-year disease-free survival rate was comparable between two groups (HR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.74~1.06, P = 0.18). Conclusion This meta-analysis has highlighted that LH can be safely performed in selective patients and improves surgical outcomes as compared to OH. Given the limitations of study design, especially the limited cases of major hepatectomy, methodologically high-quality comparative studies are needed for further evaluation.
Is there a sex difference in postoperative prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma?

Abstract:BackgroundAlthough men carry a higher risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) than women, it is still controversial whether men also have a poorer postoperative prognosis. A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the postoperative prognostic predictors of HCC focusing on sex differences.MethodsWe enrolled 516 consecutive adult patients with HCC (118 women, 398 men), who received surgical resection between January 2000 and December 2007, and were followed-up for >10 years. Clinical and laboratory data together with postoperative outcomes were reviewed.ResultsAt baseline, female patients had a higher anti-hepatitis C virus antibody prevalence (P = 0.002); lower hepatitis B virus surface antigen prevalence (P = 0.006); less microvascular invasion (P = 0.019); and lower alpha-fetoprotein (P = 0.023), bilirubin (P = 0.002), and alanine transaminase (P = 0.001) levels. Overall, there were no significant sex differences in terms of intrahepatic recurrence-free survival (RFS), distant metastasis-free survival (MFS), and overall survival (OS). However, subgroup analysis showed that women had favorable RFS (P = 0.019) and MFS (P = 0.034) in patients with alpha-fetoprotein ≤ 35 ng/mL, independent of other clinical variables (adjusted P = 0.008 and 0.043, respectively). Additionally, men had favorable OS in patients with prothrombin time (international normalized ratio [INR]) <1.1 (P = 0.033), independent of other clinical variables (adjusted P = 0.042).ConclusionsFemale sex is independently associated with favorable postoperative RFS and MFS in patients with alpha-fetoprotein ≤35 ng/mL, while male sex is independently associated with favorable OS in patients with prothrombin time INR <1.1.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Mixed evidence challenges preoperative alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) as an independent prognostic factor for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after hepatectomy.RESULTS:Daily post-operative decrease of AFP by 9% as compared to the preoperative level (A09) were selected as the Cut-off. The Kaplan-Meier curve showed that A09 was significantly different for OS (P=0.043) and RFS (P=0.03). A decrease in risk by 54% was observed for OS and 32% for RFS in the at-risk population (A09>9%). A better concordance was observed after adding A09 into TNM and BCLC staging systems. Moreover, a consistent concordance was observed in the internal (FDZS5:0.63; FDZS3:0.608) and external (FDZS5:0.85; FDZS3:0.762) validation cohorts, suggesting its prognostic value in HCC population with elevated AFP.CONCLUSIONS:Decrease in perioperative serum AFP rather than preoperative AFP is an independent prognostic factor for HCC patients after hepatectomy. Cut-off A09 significantly discriminates overall and recurrence-free survival and could be interpret into TNM and BCLC staging systems to improve the stratification power for HCC patients with elevated AFP.METHODS:Kaplan-Meier curve depicted the differences of overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS). Nomogram and concordance were employed to evaluate the superiority of the current staging system.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To investigate the prognosis significance of preoperative serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and the correlation with clinicopathological factors of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who underwent hepatectomy.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Clinicopathological data of retrospective analysis were collected for 251 HCC patients undergoing hepatectomy in this study. According to preoperative AFP level, patients were categorized into AFP-negative (0-20 ng/mL) and AFP-positive (>20 ng/mL) groups for Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard regression modeling.RESULTS:The results demonstrated that increased AFP was associated with longer prothrombin time (PTs), liver capsule invasion, low grade differentiation, and late Barcelona Clinic Liver Center (BCLC) stage. Moreover, the female patients had a greater prevalence of increased preoperative AFP than male patients [284.8 (3.975-3167.5) vs (3.653-140.65); Z-2.895, p=0.004]. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were 78.1, 57.5, and 40.6 % in the AFP-negative group and 61.8, 37.7, and 31.4 %, respectively, in the AFP-positive group (log-rank test 8.312, p=0.004). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 94.4, 83.8, and 62.3% in the AFP-negative group and 87.2, 60.0, and 36.7%, respectively, in the AFP-positive group. The difference was statistically significant (log-rank test, 16.884, p=0.000). Cox proportional-hazards model identified preoperative AFP to be an independent prognostic predictor of overall survival.CONCLUSIONS:Preoperative serum AFP is an independent predictor of prognosis among HCC patients following surgical resection. Female patients have a higher preoperative AFP than their male counterparts.
Influence of sex on outcomes of liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma: a multicenter cohort study in China

Abstract:Objective: Sex-specific differences are observed in various liver diseases, but the influence of sex on the outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after liver transplantation (LT) remains to be determined. This study is the first Chinese nationwide investigation of the role of sex in post-LT outcomes in patients with HCC. Methods: Data for recipients with HCC registered in the China Liver Transplant Registry between January 2015 and December 2020 were analyzed. The associations between donor, recipient, or donor-recipient transplant patterns by sex and the post-LT outcomes were studied with propensity score matching (PSM). The survival associated with different sex-based donor-recipient transplant patterns was further studied. Results: Among 3,769 patients enrolled in this study, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of patients with HCC after LT were 96.1%, 86.4%, and 78.5%, respectively, in female recipients, and 95.8%, 79.0%, and 70.7%, respectively, in male recipients after PSM (P = 0.009). However, the OS was comparable between recipients with female donors and male donors. Multivariate analysis indicated that male recipient sex was a risk factor for post-LT survival (HR = 1.381, P = 0.046). Among the donor-recipient transplant patterns, the male-male donor-recipient transplant pattern was associated with the poorest post-LT survival (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Our findings highlighted that the post-LT outcomes of female recipients were significantly superior to those of male recipients, and the male-male donor-recipient transplant pattern was associated with the poorest post-LT survival. Livers from male donors may provide the most benefit to female recipients. Our results indicate that sex should be considered as a critical factor in organ allocation.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Whether there is gender disparity in the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been not fully addressed. This study aimed to investigate the impact of gender on HCC recurrence following curative hepatectomy.PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 1087 patients with HCC (917 males, 170 females) who underwent curative hepatectomy. Cox regression models were constructed to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the risk parameters associated with HCC recurrence. In the sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis, and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis were used. Logistic regression models were used to assess the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI of the risk parameters related to early and late recurrence.RESULTS: Male patients showed significantly higher risk for HCC recurrence than females, in both multivariate Cox regression analysis (HR [95% CI] = 1.480 [1.084-2.020], P = 0.014) and PSM analysis (HR [95% CI] = 1.589 [1.093-2.312], P = 0.015). Higher risk of HCC recurrence was again found in males in the subgroup analysis, but the effect of male versus female gender on HCC recurrence did not depend on any selected subgroups (all P for interaction > 0.05). Gender was an independent risk factor for early recurrence (OR [95% CI] = 1.864 [1.215-2.936], P = 0.006), but not for late recurrence.CONCLUSIONS: There is gender disparity in the recurrence of patients with HCC after curative hepatectomy: males had a higher risk for HCC recurrence than females.

Abstract:Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most serious consequences of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This study sought to investigate long-term outcomes after liver resection for HCC among patients with HBV/HCV co-infection (HBV/HCV-HCC) compared with patients with HBV infection (HBV-HCC). Methods Patients who underwent curative-intent liver resection for HCC were identified from a multicenter Chinese database. Using propensity score matching (PSM), patients with HBV/HCV-HCC were matched one-to-one to patients with HBV-HCC. Overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were compared between the two groups before and after PSM. Results Among 2,467 patients identified, 93 (3.8%) and 2,374 (96.2%) patients had HBV/HCV-HCC and HBV-HCC, respectively. Compared with patients with HBV-HCC, patients with HBV/HCV-HCC were older, have poorer liver-related characteristics but better tumor-related characteristics. PSM created 88 pairs of patients with comparable liver- and tumor-related characteristics (all P > 0.2). In the PSM cohort, the 3- and 5-year RFS rates in patients with HBV/HCV-HCC were 48.3% and 38.9%, which were significantly poorer than patients with HBV-HCC (61.8% and 49.2%, P = 0.037). Meanwhile, the 3- and 5-year OS rates in patients with HBV/HCV-HCC were also poorer than patients with HBV-HCC (65.4% and 51.1% vs. 73.7% and 63.0%), with a difference close to be significant between them ( P = 0.081). Conclusion Comparing to patients with HBV-HCC, liver resection resulted in relatively poorer long-term surgical outcomes in patients with HBV/HCV-HCC.

Estradiol is significantly associated with prognosis in non-surgical liver cancer patients: from bench to bedside

Abstract:There are rarely systematic studies to analyze the prognostic factors among non-surgical liver cancer patients. Whether there is a gender difference in the survival of non-surgical liver cancer patients and what may cause this difference is still unclear. A total of 12,312 non-surgical liver cancer patients were enrolled in this study. Age, race, sex, grade, tumor TNM stage, marital status, tumor size, and histological type were independent risk factors in liver cancer and were confirmed in the validation cohort. Before menopause, females demonstrated a better mean survival probability than males (39.4±1.4 vs. 32.7±0.8 months, respectively; p<0.001), and continued in post-menopause. The results of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and KEGG pathway analysis showed that there were significant differences in steroid hormone biosynthesis between male and female liver cancer patients. In vitro experiments revealed that estradiol inhibited the proliferation of hepatocellular cancer cell lines and increased apoptosis, but estrone exerted no effect. In conclusion, gender differences in prognosis among non-surgical liver cancer patients were confirmed and attributable primarily to estradiol.

Abstract:PURPOSE: There is a striking laterality in the site of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with a strong predominance for the right side; however, the impact of primary tumor location on long-term prognosis after hepatectomy of HCC remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of primary tumor location on long-term oncological prognosis after hepatectomy for HCC.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data of consecutive patients undergoing curative hepatectomy for HCC between 2008 and 2017 were analyzed. Overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) of left-sided HCC (LS group) and right-sided HCC (RS group) were compared by using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. COX regression analysis was performed to assess the adjusted effect of tumor location on long-term oncological prognosis.RESULTS: Of the 2799 included patients, 707 (25.3%) and 2092 (74.7%) were in the LS and RS groups, respectively. Using PSM analysis, 650 matched pairs of patients were created. In the PSM cohort, median OS (66.0 vs. 72.0 months, P = 0.001) and RFS (28.0 vs. 51.0 months, P < 0.001) were worse among patients in the LS group compared to individuals in the RS group. After further adjustment for other confounders using multivariable COX regression analyses, HCC located on the left side remained independently associated with worse OS and RFS.CONCLUSION: Tumors located on the left side are associated with poorer OS and RFS after hepatectomy for HCC. Careful surgical options selection and frequent follow-up to improve long-term survival may be justified for HCC patients with left-sided primary tumors.

Abstract:BackgroundThe relationship between ABO blood group and prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. We investigated the relationship between prognosis and ABO blood group in patients with hepatitis B-associated HCC after radical hepatectomy. MethodsThe medical records of 874 patients with hepatitis B-associated HCC who underwent radical liver tumor resection were retrospectively collected. Cox proportional risk models were constructed for analysis, and the patient data were further balanced using propensity score matching (PSM) analysis to assess the impact of ABO blood group on the prognosis of patients with hepatitis B-associated HCC. ResultsIn univariate Cox regression analysis, the overall survival (OS) of non-A blood type group vs. A blood type group [hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) = 1.504 (1.003-2.255), P = 0.048], in multivariate Cox regression analysis the OS of non-A blood type group versus A blood type group [HR (95% CI) = 1.596 (1.054-2.417), P = 0.027]. After PSM, the baseline information was more balanced between the two groups, yielding the same results as above [HR (95% CI) = 1.550 (1.012-2.373), P = 0.044]. ConclusionThe difference in OS after radical hepatectomy in patients with hepatitis B-associated HCC was statistically significant in terms of ABO blood group, OS was lower in patients with non-A blood group than in patients with A blood group.
Tumour Site is a Risk Factor for Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Hepatectomy: a 1:2 Propensity Score Matching Analysis.

Abstract:Abstract Background The effect of the anatomic location of HCC on the prognosis of patients after hepatectomy is currently unclear. Methods Patients who underwent hepatectomy were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the right tumour resection group (R group) and the left tumour resection group (L group) according to the tumour anatomic location. To avoid bias, 1:2 propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was used. Based on the survival data, disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated by the Kaplan–Meier method, and long-term survival analysis was performed. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to analyse the risk factors associated with postoperative prognosis. Results A total of 700 patients were enrolled in our study. After 1:2 PSM, 354 and 177 patients were enrolled in the R group and the L group, respectively, with comparable baseline characteristics. Survival analysis showed that patients in the L group had a significantly higher recurrence rate than patients in the R group (P = 0.036), but there was no significant difference in the survival rate (P = 0.99). Long-term survival analysis showed that the survival rate of the L group was lower than that of the R group (P < 0.01). Multivariate analysis showed that tumour location in the left liver was an independent risk factor for tumour recurrence (hazard ratio, 1.263; 95% CI, 1.005–1.587) and long-term survival (hazard ratio, 3.232; 95% CI, 1.284–8.134). Conclusion For HCC patients, the recurrence rate and long-term survival rate of left liver tumours were significantly higher than those of right liver tumours, indicating that the anatomical location of the tumour has a significant effect on the survival of HCC patients. This study aimed to examine the effect of sex on HCC survival and its association with age. Methods Among 33,238 patients with HCC from 12 Chinese tertiary hospitals, 4,175 patients who underwent curative-intent hepatectomy or ablation were analyzed. Cancer-specific survival (CSS) was analyzed using Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier methods. Two propensity score methods and multiple mediation analysis were applied to mitigate confounding. To explore the effect of estrogen, a candidate sex-specific factor that changes with age, female participants' history of estrogen use and survival were analyzed. Results There were 3,321 males and 854 females included. A sex-related disparity of CSS was present and showed a typical age-dependent pattern: female survival advantage over male appeared at the perimenopausal age (years) of 45-54 (HR 0.77, 5-year CSS 85.7% vs 70.6%, p = 0.018), peaked at early postmenopausal age of 55-59 (HR 0.57, 5-year CSS 89.8% vs 73.5%, p = 0.015) and was not present in the premenopausal (<45) and late postmenopausal groups (≥60). Consistent patterns were observed in patients after either ablation or hepatectomy. These results were sustained with propensity score analyses. Confounding or mediation effects accounted for only 19.5% of sex survival disparity. Female estrogen users had significantly longer CSS than non-users (HR 0.74, 5-year CSS 79.6% vs 72.5%, p = 0.038). Conclusion Female survival advantage in HCC depends on age, and this may be associated with age-dependent sex-specific factors.

Abstract:Background: The hepatocellular carcinoma is very common in China. Our aim in this report was to investigate clinical and pathological factors based on the current decade data that could influence prognosis of HCC patients after hepatectomy. Methods: Between 2002 and 2009, all patients undergoing hepatectomy for HCC were followed up and reviewed retrospectively. Prognostic factors were studied by univariate and multivariate analysis, with Kaplan-Meier and Cox multivariate survival analyses. Results: Complete clinicopathologic and follow-up data were available for 114 patients. The estimated cumulative survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 yr were 84.6%, 60.2% and 51.8%, respectively. On univariate analysis, key prognostic factors were AFP level, GGT level, tumor size, number of tumors, portal vein invasion, liver cirrhosis status and TNM stage. In the multivariate analysis, tumor size, GGT level, liver cirrhosis status and portal vein invasion were significantly associated with patients' prognosis. Conclusion: Through follow-up of a relatively large cohort of Chinese patients, tumor size, GGT level, liver cirrhosis status, portal vein invasion were revealed as important factors for long-term survival after hepatectomy. Early diagnosis for tumor and the improvement of liver function before surgery are important ways to improve the prognosis.
Distinguished Prognosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma with or Without Cirrhosis: A Long-term Follow-up Analysis

Abstract:Conflicting results have been often observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in prognosis analysis, but few studies attempt to explore the reasons for the conflicting results. We aimed to distinguish the prognosis of HCC with cirrhosis (HCC-C) and without (HCC-NC). Patients with HBV-associated HCC treated by curative liver resection at a single institution between 1995 and 2013 were retrospectively evaluated. Kaplan–Meier and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors including tumor-related factors, hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)-1α, hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx) expression, and HBx double mutations for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in these patients. The long-term prognosis for HCC-NC is better than HCC-C. Male, poor differentiation, preoperative serum alanine aminotransferase >80 IU/L and alpha fetoprotein >400 ng/ml were risk factors for OS among HCC-NC patients, but not HCC-C patients, and age >50 years was associated with a poor OS only in cirrhotic patients. HCC-C patients benefit more from antiviral therapy following curative hepatectomy compared with HCC-NC patients. Meanwhile, the clinical value of the biomarkers HIF-1α, HBx and HBx double mutations for predicting HCC prognosis was significantly different between these two groups. There was a difference in tumor-related prognostic factors, effect of antiviral therapy on the post-hepatectomy and biomarkers between these two subgroups, indicating that subgroup analysis of the prognostic factors may achieve better management of HCC and HCC patients especially combined with liver cirrhosis should be given antiviral therapy.

Abstract:Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with rising incidence and mortality rates observed over the past 2 decades. Previous epidemiological studies have identified possible treatment options including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, the use of oncolytic viruses, or a combination of these methods. Despite the availability of various treatment options, high mortality rates for HCC patients indicate the absence of a universally efficacious treatment. Investigating the influence of sex on the efficacy of radical surgical resection for HCC holds potential significance in understanding sex-based disparities in treatment. This study aims to describe survival rates following radical surgical resection for HCC among male and female patients to identify opportunities for tailored treatment approaches in patients.

Abstract:Background. There have been progressive increases in both the incidence and death rates of female patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our objective was to investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and prognostic factors influencing the recurrence and survival of female patients with HCC.Methods. We performed a retrospective analysis of 459 consecutive female and 2,936 male patients with HCC who underwent curative resection. Multivariate competing risks analyses with Bonferroni correction were used to evaluate independent prognostic factors.Results. Female patients had a better overall survival rate (P = .001) than male patients, but a survival benefit was only observed in female patients with tumor-node-metastasis stage I diseases compared with male patients of the same stage (P = 023). Female patients less often had multiple tumors, vascular invasion, and larger tumors. Although female patients had a greater prevalence of increased serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), AFP and tumor number had prognostic significance only for male but not for female patients. The incidence of recurrence in female patients was not different than male patients (P = .130). Vascular invasion and serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase level were independent risk factors for early recurrence of female patients, whereas AFP and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase level were independent risk factors for late recurrence. After curative treatment for recurrence, female patients still had a better overall survival than male patients (P = .025).Conclusion. Female patients had a less invasive tumor phenotype and different prognostic factors from. male patients. AFP had no prognostic value in female patients. Estrogen may have a protective effect against early- but not late-stage HCC. Female patients have a better outcome after curative resection of recurrent HCC.

Abstract:Objectives This study aimed to explore the impact of sex on clinical features and survival among hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Methods HCC case data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for the period 2010 to 2015 were selected for analysis. Kaplan–Meier curves displayed overall survival. Univariate cox regression examined the prognostic characteristics of individual features, and multivariate Cox regression assessed hazard ratios. Results This study comprised 3486 HCC patients, with 2682 males and 804 females. Across all age groups, there was a higher prevalence of males compared to females. Survival curves among female patients showed no significant differences across various age groups. However, among male patients, those under 60 demonstrated notably higher survival rates compared to those aged 60 and above. Regarding various ethnicities, TNM staging systems, tumor sizes, the presence of lung/bone/brain metastases, location in Purchased/Referred Care Delivery Areas, SEER historic stages, tumor grades, and individuals receiving chemotherapy, the proportion of male patients consistently exceeded that of female patients. Within the female patient group, individuals receiving chemotherapy exhibited significantly higher survival rates compared to those who did not. However, the administration of chemotherapy showed no significant impact on the survival rate of male patients. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed age, gender, and the administration of chemotherapy key factors influencing the overall survival prognosis. Conclusion Age, gender, and the administration of chemotherapy are influential factors in the prognosis of both male and female HCC patients.

Abstract:Background and purpose: We evaluated the postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) effects on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis and recurrence in patients who underwent narrow-margin (<1.0 cm) hepate-ctomy (NH).Materials and methods: This two-arm cohort study based on the phase II study compared NH with or without PORT in patients with HCC. All patients underwent NH; 76 patients who received PORT following NH in the phase II study were assigned to the NH + RT group, and 171 who underwent NH alone were assigned to the NH group. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance clinicopathological char-acteristic differences between groups.Results: Before PSM, the 5-year overall survival (OS) rates between groups differed significantly (72.2 % vs 60.7 %, P = 0.017). Moreover, the 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was significantly higher in the NH + RT group (51.4 % vs 35.7 %, P = 0.002). After PSM, the between-group difference in OS rates remained high (P = 0.045); the 5-year OS rates were 74.7 % and 63.6 % in the NH + RT and NH groups, respectively. Similarly, the DFS rate remained significantly higher in the NH + RT group (P = 0.001); the 5-year DFS rates were 56.3 % and 31.6 %, respectively. Furthermore, both before and after PSM, patients in the NH + RT group showed significantly lower early, intrahepatic, and extrahepatic recurrence rates than those in the NH group.Conclusions: PORT may have significant OS and DFS benefits in patients with HCC undergoing NH.(c) 2023 The Author(s).
