Abstract:Recently, the multi-core technology is adopted on more and more computing platforms. As a result, the IT industry demands programmers to have solid knowledge in the whole computer system, so that they can develop highly efficient programs for various multi-core platforms. Consequently, it becomes a great challenge for undergraduate education to foster such programmers. To meet this challenge, the Software School of Fudan University builds up the current curriculum architecture to achieve effective education in the computer system. It is a progressive chain of four courses and several methods are adopted for it. We choose the most suitable textbooks and give them explanation and complement by teachers. Students are provided with full practical opportunities as well as open topics for innovative survey and analysis. The education plans are also flexibly adapted to students' career plans.

Abstract:Significance The rapid proliferation of information and communication technologies in economic, political, and social life has led to an increasing demand for computing professionals worldwide. It has also seen a corresponding expansion in undergraduate computer science (CS) programs. However, despite rapid increases in the quantity of CS graduates, little is known about their quality. In particular, little is known about the major-specific competencies, knowledge, and skills of CS graduates from different countries, types of programs, and backgrounds. Such evidence can ultimately inform employers seeking to hire qualified computing professionals within a globally competitive labor market, as well as policymakers and administrators seeking to improve the quality and diversity of CS programs in an international context.

Understanding CS Undergraduate Students' Professional Development through the Lens of Internship Experiences

Abstract:Professional development is critical for preparing undergraduate CS students for their future careers. Industry internships offer students pathways for professional development. However, little is empirically known about the impact industry-based internships have on CS students' career paths as well as the effectiveness of CS degree programs in preparing students for these professional development opportunities. In this paper, we present a thematic analysis of open-ended survey responses of 40 CS undergraduate students in the US who participated in an internship. This study aimed to understand the impact that professional internships have on: CS students' career goals, students' perceptions of the gaps between academia and industry, and students' strategies for professional success. We found four themes that describe the impact of internships on CS students. Internships (1) strengthened students' commitment to CS degrees and careers; (2) encouraged exploration of CS careers and industries; (3) promoted personal/professional growth; and (4) developed awareness of professional expectations. We also analyzed students' perception of the curriculum's effectiveness and found that students were strategically working to improve their technical skills outside of coursework to secure employment. These findings have the potential to retain students in computing and reduce the gaps between academia and industry, thereby increasing CS students' competitiveness in the workforce.
Are Computer Science and Engineering Graduates Ready for the Software Industry? Experiences from an Industrial Student Training Program

Abstract:It has been 50 years since the term software engineering was coined in 1968 at a NATO conference. The field should be relatively mature by now, with most established universities covering core software engineering topics in their Computer Science programs and others offering specialized degrees. However, still many practitioners lament a lack of skills in new software engineering hires. With the growing demand for software engineers from the industry, this apparent gap becomes more and more pronounced. One corporate strategy to address this gap is for the industry to develop supplementary training programs before the hiring process, which could also help them screen viable candidates. In this paper, we report on our experiences and lessons learned in conducting a summer school program aimed at screening new graduates, introducing them to core skills relevant to the organization and the industry, and assessing their attitudes toward mastering those skills before the hiring process begins. Our experience suggests that such initiatives can be mutually beneficial for new hires and companies. We support this insight with pre- and post-training data collected from the participants during the first edition of such a summer school and a follow-up questionnaire conducted after a year with the graduates, 50% of whom was hired by the company shortly after the summer school.

Introducing High School Students to Version Control, Continuous Integration, and Quality Assurance

Abstract:Software Engineering concepts such as version control, continuous integration, and unit testing are often not presented in college computer science curriculums until the third year of study, after completing several semesters of programming courses. Throughout the summer of 2023, two high school students volunteered in our lab at Wayne State University where I'm a graduate research assistant and Ph.D. student in computer science. The students had taken AP Computer Science but had no prior experience with software engineering or software testing. This paper documents our experience devising a group project to teach the requisite software engineering skills to implement automated tests that meaningfully contribute to open-source scientific computing projects developed in connection with our lab. We describe the concepts covered, tools used, and software tests written in this early introduction to software engineering while maintaining shared emphases on education and the deployment of our work.

Abstract:Undergraduates are unlikely to even consider graduate research in Computer Science if they do not know what Computer Science research is. Many programs aimed at introducing undergraduate to research are structured like graduate research programs, with a small number of undergraduates working with a faculty advisor. Further, females, under-represented minorities, and first generation students may be too intimidated or the idea of research may be too amorphous, so that they miss out on these programs. As a consequence, we lose out on opportunities for greater diversity in CS research. We have started a pilot program in our department where a larger number of students (close to two dozen) work with a single faculty member as part of a research group focused on Machine Learning and related areas. The goal of this program is not to convince students to pursue a research career but rather to enable them to make a more informed decision about what role they would like research to play in their future. In order to evaluate our approach, we elicited student experience via two anonymized exit surveys. Students report that they develop a better understanding of what research in Computer Science is. Their interest in research was increased as was their reported confidence in their ability to do research, although not all students wanted to further pursue computer science research opportunities. Given the reported experience of female students, this program can offer a starting point for greater diversity in CS research.

Abstract:Career development is a multifaceted, life-stage-dependant and discipline-specific process that is difference for every decision maker. During their time at university, students are building upon their career choice through discipline-specific activities yet many still find the transition into the workforce problematic, particularly for those in the discipline of IT. With the varied nature of the labour market in Australia, it is more important than ever before for universities to assist students in their career development through various opportunities for career education. With this in mind, this research asked: What career development model, and curriculum recommendations, can support IT students to be better prepared for life after university to achieve their graduate outcomes? To answer this, this research will present how career education has been implemented in undergraduate IT education at Deakin University in Australia. In addition, this paper demonstrates how a career development model together with appropriate curriculum resources can assist in addressing students' career needs, specifically for the IT context. The model will help educators' better support students to build their career interest and navigate the changing labour market.

Abstract:Development of Curriculum and delivery materials has undergone changes over a period of time, in undergraduate engineering degree system in Indian universities. However, there exists a gap between industry expectations in IT field and skills and knowledge that the graduating engineers possess and this continues to grow. A similar situation has been seen in the developed countries like USA, UK and Australia. Several researchers and practitioners have discussed and tried to come up with innovative approaches to teaching software engineering and IT as a whole. In India, it is of vital importance that steps be taken to address this issue seriously. This paper discusses some of the measures that have been implemented so that this gap is reduced and software engineers with better skills are produced. Changes to curriculum, industry-academia collaboration through conferences, sabbaticals etc., industry internships and live projects for final year students are some of the measures that have been discussed in this paper. The implementation of these measures may lead to fulfilling the growing requirement for skilled software engineers who can handle the industry challenges.

Abstract:Interest in computer science is growing. As a result, computer science (CS) and related departments are experiencing an explosive increase in undergraduate enrollments and unprecedented demand from other disciplines for learning computing. According to the 2014 CRA Taulbee Survey, the number of undergraduates declaring a computing major at Ph.D. granting departments in the US has increased 60% from 2011-2014 and the number of degrees granted has increased by 34% from 2008-2013. However, this growth is not limited to higher education. New York City, San Francisco and Oakland public schools will soon be offering computer science to all students at all schools from preschool to 12th grade, although it will be an elective for high school students. This unprecedented demand means that CS departments are likely to teach not only more students in the coming decades, but more diverse students, with more varied backgrounds, motivations, preparations, and abilities. This growth is an unparalleled opportunity to expand the reach of computing education. However, this growth is also a unique research challenge, as we know very little about how best to teach our current students, let alone the students soon to arrive. The burgeoning field of Computing Education Research (CER) is positioned to address this challenge by answering research questions such as, how should we teach computer science, from programming to advanced principles, to a broader and more diverse audience? We argue that computer science departments should lead the way in establishing CER as a foundational research area of computer science, discovering the best ways to teach CS, and inventing the best technologies with which to teach it. This white paper provides a snapshot of the current state of CER and makes actionable recommendations for academic leaders to grow CER as a successful research area in their departments.

Abstract:In computer science, an expected outcome of a student's education is programming skill. This working group investigated the programming competency students have as they complete their first one or two courses in computer science. In order to explore options for assessing students, the working group developed a trial assessment of whether students can program. The underlying goal of this work was to initiate dialog in the Computer Science community on how to develop these types of assessments. Several universities participated in our trial assessment and the disappointing results suggest that many students do not know how to program at the conclusion of their introductory courses. For a combined sample of 216 students from four universities, the average score was 22.89 out of 110 points on the general evaluation criteria developed for this study. From this trial assessment we developed a framework of expectations for first-year courses and suggestions for further work to develop more comprehensive assessments.

Abstract:The education sector in India has seen a strong change in terms of professional courses. The public and private sectors have both been working toward making the students employable. The professional courses are designed at graduate and postgraduate levels to provide the skills to students that make them job ready. The colleges are teaching a predefined course curriculum in every course, and on the basis of this curriculum, exams are conducted and students are assessed. But this curriculum is not enough to make the students’ job ready. The students need to be trained on the current trends in the industry, especially for the courses related to information technology. These extra efforts that the colleges provide for the students are termed as pre-placement activities. In this paper, we have conducted an analysis of the factors that impact the placement of students after the completion of Masters in Computer Application (MCA) course. This is higher education a postgraduate university course of 3 years. In this study, we have considered the marks obtained in university examination and other pre-placement activities including technical tests, technical interviews and personal interviews. The results of the analysis indicate how these different factors influence the placement of students after the course.

Abstract:The Computer Information System (CIS) is information and communication technology in support of business processes. In this paper, we present a typical undergraduate computer information system curriculum examining the degree of lab intensity and its effect on the course efficacy. A CIS program is usually part of the school of business as it is in support of business processes. We also explore the differences between a CIS curriculum and other computer related technology courses, such as Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS), and Software Engineering (SE). The curriculum is composed of several elements such as content and sequence of subjects, classrooms equipped with computer projection, internet, and local network access, and appropriate computing and software infrastructure. We will focus on the importance and adequacy of labs for the CIS curriculum. The proposed CIS curriculum works for a 4-year as well as a 3-year program. This paper provides a recommendation for local and Federal Accreditation agencies and curriculum committees.
Curricular Complexity Versus Quality of Computer Science Programs

Abstract:In this research paper we describe a study that involves measuring the complexities of undergraduate curricula offered by computer science departments, and then comparing them to the quality of these departments, where quality is determined by a metric-based ranking system. The study objective was to determine whether or not a relationship exists between the quality of computer science departments and the complexity of the curricula they offer. The relationship between curricular complexity and program quality was previously investigated for the case of undergraduate electrical engineering programs, with surprising results. It was found that if the US News & World Report Best Undergraduate Programs ranking is used as a proxy for quality, then a statistically significant difference in curricular complexities exists between higher and lower quality electrical engineering programs. Furthermore, it was found that higher quality electrical engineering programs tend to have lower complexity curricula, and vice versa. In the study reported in this paper, a sufficient amount of data was collected in order to determine that an inverse relationship between program quality and curricular complexity also exists in undergraduate computer science departments. This brings up an interesting question regarding the extent to which this phenomenon exists across the spectrum of STEM disciplines.

Abstract:While teaching introductory programming courses for over a decade in reputed institutions we have experienced that several factors play significant role in developing problem solving skills and program development skills in students. There are certain types of difficulties that are encountered by the beginners. These difficulties vary in their nature. Beginners find difficulties with the programming language that they use, the compilers that they use and so on. These difficulties if not overcome proves detrimental to their career as professional engineers at a later stage. This paper focuses on the various types of difficulties that a novice programmer faces while learning programming and tries to find out ways to overcome them.

Abstract:The ubiquity of technology in our daily lives and the economic stability of the technology sector in recent years, especially in areas with a computer science footing, has led to an increase in computer science enrollment in many parts of the world. To keep up with this trend, the undergraduate computer science curriculum has undergone many revisions, analysis, and discussion. Unfortunately, the graduate level curriculum is lagging far behind in computer science education literature and research. To remedy this, we present the blueprint and execution of a graduate level course in programming, designed specifically to cater to the needs of graduate students with a diverse background both in CS and other fields. To this end, the course is divided into two halves. In the first half, students are introduced to different programming concepts, such as multi-paradigm programming, data structures, concurrency, and security to bring them up to speed and provide a level playing field. In the second half, all of these concepts are employed as building blocks to solve real-world problems from data mining, natural language processing, computer vision, and other fields. In addition, the paper also discusses in detail the evaluation instruments employed for the course. Moreover, we also share anecdotal information around student feedback, course design, and grading that may be useful for others who wish to replicate our curriculum or sketch a similar course.

Abstract:Unemployment is a major obstacle for developing countries, and the skill gap between graduating students and industry expectations is a significant reason which leads to unemployment. Various businesses, industries, and companies in developing countries spend a lot of resources in training the recruited graduates, which causes a loss of revenue for these organizations. However, Universities sustained the loss of reputation when graduates are not finding the intended job even after completing the guided course work. The current effect of COVID has revolutionized the education sector. The universities are under tremendous pressure to reduce the gap in providing the skills through webinars or online interactive classes, which prepare the students for the corporate world. The current system in developing countries like India, to conceive job-ready graduates is less engaging and not easily accessible to every pupil. To overcome these challenges, we are proposing a skill-based interactive online system for skill development. This system would be guiding the students to attain the skills for a career based on their interests and talents with the help of a reinforcement learning agent trained with the requirement of the industrial and academic expert. This system uses a Q-learning algorithm to feed the students with skills in a particular order and guide them to achieve their goals.

Abstract:Joint ACM/IEEE Computer Society undergraduate computer engineering curriculum guidelines are slated for release in 2016. These update the 2004 guidelines commonly known as CE2004. The presenters are part of the task group leading the revisions and will give an overview of the latest draft. Participants will engage in discussions on potential improvements to the guidelines to ensure that they are useful to programs as they work to ensure their curricula reflect the state-of-the-art in computer engineering education and practice and are relevant for the coming decade.

Training the next generation of computational scientists through a new undergraduate course

Abstract:We introduce a newly designed undergraduate-level interdisciplinary course in scientific computing that aims to prepare students as the next generation of research-oriented computational scientists and engineers. The course offers students opportunities to explore a diverse set of projects and develop the necessary programming skills to implement ideas and algorithms within high performance computing environments. The training includes how to think about, formulate, organize, and implement programs in scientific computing. The emphasis of the course is on problem solving within a wide range of applications in science and engineering.

Forecasting Success of Computer Science Professors and Students Based on Their Academic and Personal Backgrounds

Abstract:After completing their undergraduate studies, many computer science (CS) students apply for competitive graduate programs in North America. Their long-term goal is often to be hired by one of the big five tech companies or to become a faculty member. Therefore, being aware of the role of admission criteria may help them choose the best path towards their goals. In this paper, we analyze the influence of students' previous universities on their chances of being accepted to prestigious North American universities and returning to academia as professors in the future. Our findings demonstrate that the ranking of their prior universities is a significant factor in achieving their goals. We then illustrate that there is a bias in the undergraduate institutions of students admitted to the top 25 computer science programs. Finally, we employ machine learning models to forecast the success of professors at these universities. We achieved an RMSE of 7.85 for this prediction task.
