Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.
Multistimuli-Responsive PNIPAM-Based Double Cross-Linked Conductive Hydrogel with Self-Recovery Ability for Ionic Skin and Smart Sensor.

Abstract:Multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels have been appealing candidates for multifunctional ionic skin. However, the fabrication of the multistimuli-responsive conductive hydrogels with satisfactory mechanical property to meet the practical applications is still a great challenge. In this study, a novel poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-sodium acrylate)/alginate/hectorite clay Laponite XLS (PNIPAM-SA/ALG/XLS) double cross-linked hydrogel with excellent mechanical property, self-recovery ability, temperature/pH-responsive ability, and strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity was fabricated. The PNSAX hydrogel possessed a moderate tensile strength of 290 kPa at a large elongation rate of 1120% and an excellent compression strength of 2.72 MPa at 90%. The hydrogel also possessed excellent mechanical repeatability and self-recovery ability. Thus, the hydrogel could withstand repetitive deformations for long time periods. Additionally, the hydrogel could change its transparency and volume once at a temperature of 44 °C and change its volume at different pHs. Thus, the visual temperature/pH-responsive ability allowed the hydrogel to qualitatively harvest environmental information. Moreover, the hydrogel possessed an excellent conductivity of 0.43 S/m, and the hydrogel could transform large/subtle deformation and temperature information into electrical signal change. Thus, the ultrafast strain/temperature-sensitive conductivity allowed the hydrogel to quantitatively detect large/small-scale human motions as well as environmental temperature. A cytotoxicity test confirmed the good cytocompatibility. Taken together, the hydrogel was suitable for human motion detecting and environmental information harvesting for long time periods. Therefore, the hydrogel has a great application potential as a multifunctional ionic skin and smart sensor.

Abstract:Due to their promising applications in health monitoring, wearable flexible sensors based on hydrogel have gained considerable attention as modern medicine advances. However, it is still challenging for hydrogel-based wearable flexible sensors to be integrated with high stretchability, multifunctionality, and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed novel flexible multifunctional sensors based on ionic conductive double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AAc)), sodium alginate (SA), and calcium chloride (CaCl2) by simple two-step method of copolymerization and soaking. Abundant carboxyl groups on SA and P(AM-co-AAc) chains and their capacity to bind with Ca2+ were utilized to design a double network, providing the hydrogels with high stretchability and toughness. Ca2+ endowed the hydrogels with enhanced conductivity and sensitivity, while P(AM-co-AAc) enabled the hydrogels to respond to multi-stimuli. The SA/P(AM-co-AAc)/Ca2+ hydrogels presented outstanding mechanical properties (elongation at break of 2626%, tensile strength of 372 kPa), great sensitivity (gauge factor up to 7.1), and excellent durability (1000 stretching-releasing cycles). It could detect human movements, touch, physiology (temperature and sweat), pH changes, and organic solvents. Besides, the hydrogel sensors displayed great biocompatibility. Therefore, this work extends the design and preparation of highly stretchable and multifunctional hydrogels to facilitate the applications of skin-friendly wearable sensors.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Hydrogels have emerged as fascinating material for various applications in the chemical, biomedical, and energy fields. Generally, their poor self-healing performance, mechanical properties, and bioactivity limit the application of hydrogels in bioelectronics. Herein, a self-healable, injectable, stretchable, self-adhesive, biocompatible, and conductive poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)/gallic acid (PVP/GA) composite hydrogel was fabricated via hydrogen bonding between the tertiary amide groups in PVP and hydroxyl groups in GA. The PVP/GA composite hydrogel possesses excellent self-healing properties after damage. The composite hydrogel is highly stretchable and can adhere to human skin to detect physiological activity signals precisely according to the resistance signals. The composite hydrogel has good biocompatibility with living organisms. It is envisioned that multifunctional PVP/GA composite hydrogels can be applied to the electronic skins, wearable biosensors, and body movements monitoring equipment.

Abstract:Hydrogel flexible sensors are gaining significant interest due to their distinct biocompatibility, flexibility, and unique features of being adjustable and injectable, but there are still problems of poor self‐healing performance and low conductivity in the current stage of research. In this work, a prefabricated blending method was used to construct a dual‐network system using polyacrylamide (PAM), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), and tannin acid (TA), and ferric ions (Fe3+) were introduced to apply ionically conductive organic hydrogels to flexible sensors. The PAM/CMCS‐Fe3+/TA hydrogels have good fatigue resistance and self‐healing properties, and their conductivity is as high as 6.42 S/m. This hydrogel‐based sensor for strain sensing purpose offers a lot of promise for flexible sensor applications since it can provide steady, dependable, and repeatable electrical impulses.

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels attracted much attention for applying as wearable sensors, but most hydrogel sensors were not strong enough to withstand repeated sensing because of their low mechanical strength. Here, xanthan gum and sodium chloride were introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel system for constructing hydrogels with high mechanical strength due to the hydrogen bonds formed between polyvinyl alcohol and gum xanthan as well as the chain entanglement of polyvinyl alcohol. Meanwhile, the hydrogel was highly sensitive to mechanical deformation because of the existence of free ions provided by sodium chloride. As a result, the hydrogel could serve as sensors for perceiving various body motions, with the advantages of fast response, reproducibility and durability for repeated stretching or compression. The strategy of xanthan gum‐enhanced hydrogel fuels an exciting new direction for hydrogel‐based wearable sensors.

Abstract:Hydrogels have received increasing interest as a flexible material. However, the integration of multiple functions into one hydrogel remains a great challenge. For the application of hydrogels in the field of biosensors, both rigidity and toughness of hydrogels are usually necessary. Herein, a kind of multifunctional hydrogel with a combination of ideal properties, including transparency, fatigue resistance, flexibility, conductivity, self-adhesive and low contact impedance is designed. The hydrogel is prepared via a one-pot method by polymerizing the monomers acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM) and [2-(Methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfo-propyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) under UV light to form a copolymer. The chemical cross-linking and hydrogen bonding jointly impart the hydrogel with good fatigue resistance and flexibility. Furthermore, the hydrogel can adhere to a wide range of substrate surfaces through intermolecular forces and give precise, stable and clear ECG signals when detecting small physical movements. It is believed that the designed hydrogel will show great prospects in wearable devices and biosensors.

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors, based on their good electrical conductivity and strain sensitivity, are widely used in wearable health monitoring, sensitive tactile information display and multi-functional robot skin. However, it is still a challenge for wearable devices to prepare conductive hydrogel with flexibility, high strain, high sensitivity and biocompatibility. Herein, we designed an interpenetrating network conductive composite hydrogel, which composed with polyaniline, double bond modified chitosan and acrylamide, has excellent strength and toughness due to its unique physically and chemically cross-linked double network. The obtained hydrogel exhibited good tensile strength (0.3 MPa), high electrical conductivity (6.97 S/m) and strain sensitivity (gauge factor 15.9). The results showed that the strain sensor could detect the movement of human joints through electrical signals, and had good stability and reproducibility, which indicated that it was expected to be used in wearable health monitoring and multi-functional robot skin.

Abstract:In recent years, conductive hydrogels, as an ideal flexible material, have quite broad application prospects in various flexible electronics fields, such as flexible supercapacitors, flexible batteries, and flexible sensors. However, mechanical stress such as stretching, fracture, and compression will affect the performance of conductive hydrogel during the application, which limits its further application. Polysaccharides, such as cellulose and chitosan, are widely distributed and easy-to-obtain biological macromolecules, which contain a large number of polar functional groups (carboxyl, amino, etc.), which can be formed with polymer hydrogel molecular chains, thereby improving the performance of the hydrogel. Herein, we prepared a kind of conductive hydrogel with high toughness, high conductivity, and self-adhesion by introducing carboxymethyl chitosan and maltose to induce a dynamic Schiff base reaction in the hydrogel. It is conceived that this study proposed a potential approach for the progress of conductive hydrogels in various flexible electronics fields.

Abstract:Flexible biosensors made from conductive hydrogels have shown tremendous potential in health management and human-machine interfaces. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to fabricate conductive hydrogels with robust resilience and long-term stability. Herein, we report a nanocomposite conductive hydrogel prepared through one-pot radical polymerization of 3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid (APBA) and acrylamide (AM) in the presence of Laponite XLG nanosheets (XLG) stabilized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Owing to the existence of various non-covalent interactions within the network (B-N coordination, hydrogen bond, and polymer chain entanglement), the hydrogels feature splendid mechanical properties with tensile strength of 252-323 kPa, fracture strain of 880-1200%, Young's modulus of 48-50 kPa and fracture energy of 911-1078 J m-2, and exhibit robust elasticity and fatigue resistance during 1000 consecutive tensile and compressive cycles. The hydrogels show remarkable sensing performances (gauge factor up to 9.43), broad sensing range of strain (1-300%) and pressure (1-80 kPa), enabling reliable and accurate monitoring of large and tiny motions in daily human life. Moreover, the conductive hydrogels could not only accelerate skin incision healing but also act as smart wearable sensors to monitor the skin wound healing process by detection of local temperature changes.

Multifunctional chitosan-based composite hydrogels engineered for sensing applications

Abstract:Chitosan-based hydrogels, as natural high-molecular-weight flexible materials, are widely utilized due to their outstanding properties. In this research, we developed a one-pot method for synthesizing a novel PVA/CS@PPy-PDAx% conductive hydrogel and explored the internal bonding patterns through molecular dynamics simulations. By adding PPy-PDA nanoparticles into a hydrogel matrix, an interpenetrating conductive network established successfully. The uniform distribution of PPy-PDA nanoparticles endowed the hydrogel with good electrical conductivity (0.171 S/m), significantly enhanced mechanical properties, and strain sensing (S = 5.04), as well as near-infrared photothermal responsiveness (temperature increase of 41.9 °C within 30 s). Additionally, due to the hydrogel's significant photothermal conversion efficiency under near-infrared radiation, it exhibits rapid elimination of Escherichia coli with an antibacterial efficiency exceeding 90 %. The unique hydrogen-bonded crosslinked structure provides the hydrogel with excellent re-healing properties, allowing for restoration through a freeze-thaw process after damage. The conductivity remains nearly unchanged after re-healing, maintaining the material's integrity and functionality. The flexible sensor based on this hydrogel has a response time of 100 ms and can sensitively detect large-scale deformations (e.g., joint bending at various angles), different gravitational forces, and recognize human handwriting. These characteristics make this hydrogel a promising candidate for advancing intelligent wearable technologies and human-machine interaction systems.
A Multifunctional, Self-Healing, Self-Adhesive, and Conductive Sodium Alginate/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Composite Hydrogel as a Flexible Strain Sensor.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based wearable devices have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in electronic skins, soft robotics, and sensors. However, it is still a challenge for hydrogel-based wearable devices to be integrated with high conductivity, a self-healing ability, remoldability, self-adhesiveness, good mechanical strength and high stretchability, good biocompatibility, and stimulus-responsiveness. Herein, multifunctional conductive composite hydrogels were fabricated by a simple one-pot method based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and tannic acid (TA) using borax as a cross-linker. The composite hydrogel network was built by borate ester bonds and hydrogen bonds. The obtained hydrogel exhibited pH- and sugar-responsiveness, high stretchability (780% strain), and fast self-healing performance with healing efficiency (HE) as high as 93.56% without any external stimulus. Additionally, the hydrogel displayed considerable conductive behavior and stable changes of resistance with high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 15.98 at a strain of 780%). The hydrogel was further applied as a strain sensor for monitoring large and tiny human motions with durable stability. Significantly, the healed hydrogel also showed good sensing behavior. This work broadens the avenue for the design and preparation of biocompatible polymer-based hydrogels to promote the application of hydrogel sensors with comfortable wearing feel and high sensitivity.

Abstract:The application of adhesive conductive hydrogel materials in flexible sensors has been extensively studied. However, existing adhesive hydrogel sensor materials have problems such as poor adhesion, low conductivity, and difficulty in balancing mechanical and adhesive properties, which limit their practical applications. In this study, we propose a simple and economical method to fabricate double‐network hydrogels for flexible strain sensors by dissolving acrylamide (AM), chitosan (CS), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and gelatin (Gel) in a mixed solvent of deionized water and a food‐grade phosphate. The prepared AM/CS/PEG/Gel (ACPG) hydrogel exhibits excellent toughness (maximum stress of 154 kPa, maximum elongation of 2256%), self‐adhesiveness (maximum adhesion strength to wood of 17.2 kPa), and high conductivity (2.33 S/m). Compared with similar adhesive hydrogels, the conductivity of ACPG hydrogel is significantly improved. Therefore, ACPG hydrogel can be used as an ideal material for flexible sensors, and has broad application potential in wearable devices and human‐computer interaction.

When used as a strain sensor, it demonstrates a broad strain window and shows a high sensitivity in monitoring human motions. This work provides a facile method in fabricating multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel for applications in wearable electronics and soft robotics.

Abstract:Cellulose‐based hydrogels: synthesis methods and sensor applications. Flexible sensors exhibit the properties of excellent shape adaptability and deformation ability, which have been applied for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, food safety, smart systems, and human–computer interaction. Cellulose‐based hydrogels are ideal materials for the fabrication of flexible sensors due to their unique three‐dimensional structure, renewability, ease of processing, biodegradability, modifiability, and good mechanical properties. This paper comprehensively reviews recent advances of cellulose‐based hydrogels in the construction of flexible sensor applications. The characteristics, mechanisms, and advantages of cellulose‐based hydrogels prepared by physical cross‐linking, chemical cross‐linking are respectively analyzed and summarized in detail. The focus then turns to the research and development in cellulose‐based hydrogel sensors, including physical sensing (pressure/strain, humidity/temperature, and optical sensing), chemical sensing (chromium, copper, and mercury ion sensing, toxic gas sensing, nitrite sensing), and biosensing (glucose, antibody, and cellular sensing). Additionally, the limitations of cellulose‐based hydrogels in sensors, along with key challenges and future directions, are discussed. It is anticipated that this review will furnish invaluable insight for the advancement of novel green, flexible sensors and facilitate the integration of cellulose‐based hydrogels as a fundamental component in the development of multifunctional sensing technologies, thereby expediting the design of innovative materials in the near future.
Polysaccharide-based High-Strength, Self-Healing and Ultra-Sensitive Wearable Sensors

Abstract:As abundant, biodegradable, and biocompatible materials, polysaccharides have received great attention in many fields. Ionic conductive hydrogels based on sodium alginate and its derivatives have been extensively studied in the field of wearable sensors due to their low cost, non-toxic and biocompatible. However, the inherent low mechanical strength of hydrogels leads to poor accuracy and durability of electrical signals under high loads. Herein, the intelligent ionic hydrogels based on oxide sodium alginate (OSA), poly (acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) (PACA), and FeCl3 were synthesized by a simple one-pot method. Reversible imine and hydrogen bonds between OSA and PACA, and coordination interactions among PACA, OSA, and Fe3+ were successfully designed to provide hydrogels with excellent elongation at break (830%), strong tensile strength (370 kPa), and high self-healing efficiency (90%). They also show controlled conductivity and high tensile sensitivity (Gauge factor, GF=7.8) for accurate and stable detection of human movement and physiological stimuli. Given these findings, the developed polysaccharide-based hydrogels represent a great application prospect in strain sensors for wearable electronic devices, soft robotics, and human-machine interfaces.
Tough, self-healing, adhesive double network conductive hydrogel based on gelatin-polyacrylamide covalently bridged by oxidized sodium alginate for durable wearable sensors

Abstract:Pursuing high-performance conductive hydrogels is still hot topic in development of advanced flexible wearable devices. Herein, a tough, self-healing, adhesive double network (DN) conductive hydrogel (named as OSA-(Gelatin/PAM)-Ca, O-(G/P)-Ca) was prepared by bridging gelatin and polyacrylamide network with functionalized polysaccharide (oxidized sodium alginate, OSA) through Schiff base reaction. Thanks to the presence of multiple interactions (Schiff base bond, hydrogen bond, and metal coordination) within the network, the prepared hydrogel showed outstanding mechanical properties (tensile strain of 2800 % and stress of 630 kPa), high conductivity (0.72 S/m), repeatable adhesion performance and excellent self-healing ability (83.6 %/79.0 % of the original tensile strain/stress after self-healing). Moreover, the hydrogel-based sensor exhibited high strain sensitivity (GF = 3.66) and fast response time (<0.5 s), which can be used to monitor a wide range of human physiological signals. Based on this, excellent compression sensitivity (GF = 0.41 kPa-1 in the range of 90-120 kPa), a three-dimensional (3D) array of flexible sensor was designed to monitor the intensity of pressure and spatial force distribution. In addition, a gel-based wearable sensor was accurately classified and recognized ten types of gestures, achieving an accuracy rate of >96.33 % both before and after self-healing under three machine learning models (the decision tree, SVM, and KNN). This paper provides a simple method to prepare tough and self-healing conductive hydrogel as flexible multifunctional sensor devices for versatile applications in fields such as healthcare monitoring, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The application of wearable sensors is becoming increasingly widespread, among which hydrogels, with their excellent biocompatibility, multifunctionality and modulus similar to human skin, are considered one of the most promising wearable sensors. However, when using hydrogel flexible sensors adhering to human skin, unnecessary adhesion often occurs, resulting in operational difficulties and unstable signal collection. Moreover, the hydrogel polymerization process is time-consuming and difficult to perform. Based on this, we have prepared an asymmetric adhesive dual-layer conductive hydrogel that can be rapidly prepared to address the above issues. Introducing ZnCl 2 into a solution of tannic acid (TA) coated diatomaceous earth (DE) forms a self-catalytic system, allowing the hydrogel to be prepared within 15 seconds. The components ZnCl 2 and TA endow the system with lower freezing temperature and strong adhesion properties. By adjusting the ratio accordingly, a dual-layer hydrogel consisting of an asymmetrical structure could be prepared facilely. The adhesive side can firmly adhere to human skin and can be removed easily without leaving any residue, while the non-adhesive side can prevent it from sticking to fingers or clothing and contamination, facilitating stable signal transmission. The dual-layer hydrogel developed in this study possesses many advantages such as rapid gelation, asymmetric adhesion, strong interfacial force, mechanical reinforcement and anti-freezing properties. It can stably monitor a wide range of strains and daily human movements, with broad application prospects, providing a new approach for the development of functional flexible devices.
