Impact of Climate Change on Hydropower Generation Case Study-Two Himalayan Projects

B. Dibrani
Abstract:Hydropower is an environmentally friendly source of renewable energy and the most extensive, accounting for nearly 20% of global electricity production. Total installed capacity worldwide has grown by 39% from 2005 to 2015, at an average annual growth rate of approximately 4% (World Energy Council, 2017). In 2016, an estimated 31.5 GW of new hydropower capacity was commissioned, with a total global capacity reaching 1,246 GW (IHA, 2017a). These figures therefore demonstrate hydropower’s importance for the world’s energy market, and that the sustainability of existing and planned projects must be ensured with respect to future climatological changes.
