Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).
Rationality of twist representation zeta functions of compact $p$-adic analytic groups

Abstract:We prove that for any twist rigid compact $p$-adic analytic group $G$, its twist representation zeta function is a finite sum of terms $n_{i}^{-s}f_{i}(p^{-s})$, where $n_{i}$ are natural numbers and $f_{i}(t)\in\mathbb{Q}(t)$ are rational functions. Meromorphic continuation and rationality of the abscissa of the zeta function follow as corollaries. If $G$ is moreover a pro-$p$ group, we prove that its twist representation zeta function is rational in $p^{-s}$. To establish these results we develop a Clifford theory for twist isoclasses of representations, including a new cohomological invariant of a twist isoclass. Abstract:We extend Thurston's combinatorial criterion for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps with bounded type Siegel disks. The combinatorial characterization of this class of Siegel rational maps plays a special role in the study of general Siegel rational maps. As one of the applications, we prove that for any quadratic rational map with a bounded type Siegel disk, the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasi-circle which passes through one or both of the critical points.

Abstract:In this paper we study properties of endomorphisms of $\p^k$ using a symmetric product construction $(\p^1)^k/\mathfrak{S}_k \cong \p^k$. Symmetric products have been used to produce examples of endomorphisms of $\p^k$ with certain characteristics, $k\geq2$. In the present note, we discuss the use of these maps to enlighten stability phenomena in parameter spaces. In particular, we study $k$-deep post-critically finite maps and characterize families of Lattès maps.

Abstract:We introduce twisted triple crossing diagram maps, collections of points in projective space associated to bipartite graphs on the cylinder, and use them to provide geometric realizations of the cluster integrable systems of Goncharov and Kenyon constructed from toric dimer models. Using this notion, we provide geometric proofs that the pentagram map and the cross-ratio dynamics integrable systems are cluster integrable systems. We show that in appropriate coordinates, cross-ratio dynamics is described by geometric R-matrices, which solves the open question of finding a cluster algebra structure describing cross-ratio dynamics.

Abstract:Let $X$ be an algebraic variety equipped with a dominant rational self-map $\phi:X\to X$. A new quantity measuring the interaction of $(X,\phi)$ with trivial dynamical systems is introduced; the stabilised algebraic dimension of $(X,\phi)$ captures the maximum number of new algebraically independent invariant rational functions on the cartesian product of $(X, \phi)$ and $(Y, \psi)$, as $(Y,\psi)$ ranges over all algebraic dynamical systems. It is shown that this birational invariant agrees with the maximum dimension of a dominant equivariant rational image $(X',\phi')$ where $\phi'$ is part of an algebraic group action on $X'$. As a consequence, it is deduced that if some cartesian power of $(X,\phi)$ admits a nonconstant invariant rational function, then already the second cartesian power does.

Abstract:The moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points has two distinguished families of maps: the forgetful maps, given by forgetting some of the markings, and the Kapranov maps, given by complete linear series of $\psi$-classes. The collection of all these maps embeds the moduli space into a product of projective spaces. We call the multidegrees of this embedding ``Kapranov degrees,'' which include as special cases the work of Witten, Silversmith, Gallet--Grasegger--Schicho, Castravet--Tevelev, Postnikov, Cavalieri--Gillespie--Monin, and Gillespie--Griffins--Levinson. We establish, in terms of a combinatorial matching condition, upper bounds for Kapranov degrees and a characterization of their positivity. The positivity characterization answers a question of Silversmith and gives a new proof of Laman's theorem characterizing generically rigid graphs in the plane. We achieve this by proving a recursive formula for Kapranov degrees and by using tools from the theory of error correcting codes.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the dynamical structure of the rational family $(f_t)$ given by $$f_t(z)=tz^{m}\Big(\frac{1-z}{1+z}\Big)^{n}\quad(m\ge 2,~t\ne 0).$$ Each map $f_t$ has two super-attracting immediate basins and two free critical points. We prove that for $0<|t|\le 1$ and $|t|\ge 1$, either of these basins is completely invariant and at least one of the free critical points is inactive. Based on this separation we draw a detailed picture the structure of the dynamical and the parameter plane.

Abstract:We develop non-Archimedean techniques to analyze the degeneration of a sequence of rational maps of the complex projective line. We provide an alternative to Luo's method which was based on ultra-limits of the hyperbolic 3-space. We build hybrid spaces using Berkovich theory which enable us to prove the convergence of equilibrium measures, and to determine the asymptotics of Lyapunov exponents.

Abstract:We prove the Bernoulli property for a class of counter-twisting linked twist maps. These compose orthogonal linear shears on the torus, orientated in the opposite sense to their co-twisting counterparts (where the shears reinforce one another). Compared to previous studies we focus on the parameter space corresponding to weak shears, near the critical parameter below which hyperbolicity is lost and the map is non-mixing. The approach developed to deal with this situation appears applicable to a broad range of non-uniformly hyperbolic examples.

Abstract:Abstract We construct a sequence of explicit blow-ups and blow-downs on an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces $X$ which transforms it into a projective space of the same dimension. Moreover, this resolves a birational map given by Landsberg and Manivel. Centers of the blow-ups for $X$ are constructed by loci of chains of minimal rational curves and centers of the blow-ups for the projective space are constructed from the variety of minimal rational tangents of $X$ and its higher secant varieties. The result was known in the special case where $X$ is of rank 2 and could be found in Zak’s monograph “Tangents and secants of algebraic varieties.”

Abstract:For an exact twist map $f$, we introduce an inherent Lipschitz dynamics $\Sigma_+$ given by the discrete forward Lax-Oleinik semigroup. We investigate several properties of $\Sigma_+$ and show that for any discrete weak K.A.M. solution $u$, the non-differentiable points of $u$ are globally propagated and forward invariant by $\Sigma_+$. In particular, such propagating dynamics possesses the same rotation number as the associated Aubry-Mather set with respect to $u$.

Abstract:Toward the understanding of bifurcation phenomena of dynamics on the Berkovich projective line over non-archimedean fields, we study the stability (or passivity) of critical points of families of rational functions parametrized by analytic curves. We construct the activity measure of a critical point of a family of rational functions, and study its properties. For a family of polynomials, we analyze the support of the activity measure, for example its relation to boundedness locus, i.e., the Mandelbrot set, and to the normality of the sequence of the forward orbit.

Abstract:Given a Hopf algebra $H$ and a counital $2$-cocycle $\mu$ on $H$, Drinfeld introduced a notion of twist which deforms an $H$-module algebra $A$ into a new algebra $A_\mu$. We show that when $A$ is a quadratic algebra, and $H$ acts on $A$ by degree-preserving endomorphisms, then the twist $A_\mu$ is also quadratic. Furthermore, if $A$ is a Koszul algebra, then $A_\mu$ is a Koszul algebra. As an application, we prove that the twist of the $q$-quantum plane by the quasitriangular structure of the quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ is a quadratic algebra equal to the $q^{-1}$-quantum plane.
