Abstract:Large lectures are commonly characterized by lacking interactivity and adaptability to individual learning processes. Flipped classroom as a more active learning design has the potential to meet this challenge. For knowledge acquisition in flipped classrooms, students’ regular and timely engagement in watching pre-class videos on new topics is critical to benefit from the learning activities in the in-class sessions. However, there is limited evidence on the relationship between engagement in pre-class video watching and later achievement and particularly in knowledge retention in flipped classroom. Thus, we developed sophisticated pre-class learning videos for a large statistics lecture and set up a flipped course design. We regressed course achievement on students’ timing of watching the pre-class videos. To contrast the relation between preclass video watching and other typically discussed predictors of achievement, we controlled for prior achievement and motivation. We found that students, who watch the videos before the corresponding in-class session perform better, both in the short-term (final exam) and in the long-term (follow-up-test four months later). Our results suggest that timing rather than quantity of video watching matters in terms of academic performance and knowledge retention. The findings highlight the important role of motivational interventions aiming at encouraging students to prepare for class in time to ensure knowledge acquisition in flipped classrooms.

The flipped classroom: A learning model to increase student engagement not academic achievement

Abstract:A decrease in student attendance at lectures both nationally and internationally, has prompted educators to re-evaluate their teaching methods and investigate strategies which promote student engagement. The flipped classroom model, grounded in active learning pedagogy, transforms the face-to-face classroom. Students prepare for the flipped classroom in their own time by watching short online videos and completing readings. Face-to-face time is used to apply learning through problem-solving with peers. To improve the engagement and learning outcomes of our second year cohort, lectures were replaced with short online videos and face-to-face time was spent in a flipped classroom. The impact of the flipped classroom was analysed through surveys, attendance records, learning analytics and exam data before and after the implementation of the flipped classroom. Results suggest an increase in student engagement and a positive attitude towards the learning method. However, there were no measurable increases in student learning outcomes.

Abstract:This article examines student engagement with video technology in a large undergraduate university subject. Drawing on a mixed methods study that included a survey and focus groups with students, we analyse students’ experiences with and perspectives on the videos to gain insights into their effectiveness in supporting student engagement and learning. By analysing engagement along three distinct, yet interconnected, dimensions – cognitive, behavioural and affective – our study highlights differences in the ways in which students engage with videos as one key form of technology enhanced learning. We find that videos can promote cognitive engagement by helping students to understand key concepts and making them more relatable, and that they can foster affective engagement, especially by creating an increased sense of teacher presence. However, while the students in our study largely perceived the videos to be engaging and beneficial to their learning, behavioural engagement was inconsistent across the cohort and often lacking. Student concerns about investing time in engaging with video resources suggest that communication from educators on their role in the curriculum is especially important. These findings contribute important insights into students’ video technology use which in turn can inform the pedagogical use of technology in teaching and learning.
Exploring University Students' Engagement with Online Video Lectures in a Blended Introductory Mechanics Course

Abstract:The advent of MOOCs has stimulated interest in using online videos to deliver content in university courses. We examined student engagement with 78 online videos that we created and were incorporated into a one-semester blended introductory mechanics course at the Georgia Institute of Technology. We found that students were more engaged with videos that supported laboratory activities than with videos that presented lecture content. In particular, the percentage of students accessing laboratory videos was consistently greater than 80 percent throughout the semester while the percentage of students accessing lecture videos dropped to less than 40 percent by the end of the term. Moreover, students were more likely to access the entirety of a laboratory video than a lecture video. Our results suggest that students may access videos based on perceived value: students appear to consider the laboratory videos as essential for successfully completing the laboratories while students appear to consider the lecture videos as something more akin to supplementary material. We found there was little correlation between student engagement with the videos and the performance in the course. In addition, an examination of the in-video content suggests that students focus more on concrete information that is explicitly required for assignment completion (e.g., actions required to complete laboratory work, or formulas/mathematical expressions needed to solve particular problems) and less on content that is considered more conceptual in nature. The results of the study suggest ways in which instructors may revise courses to better support student learning.

Abstract:The explosion of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in the recent years creates the demand for scalable, automatic approaches to process and evaluate OERs, with the end goal of identifying and recommending the most suitable educational materials for learners. We focus on building models to find the characteristics and features involved in context-agnostic engagement (i.e. population-based), a seldom researched topic compared to other contextualised and personalised approaches that focus more on individual learner engagement. Learner engagement, is arguably a more reliable measure than popularity/number of views, is more abundant than user ratings and has also been shown to be a crucial component in achieving learning outcomes. In this work, we explore the idea of building a predictive model for population-based engagement in education. We introduce a novel, large dataset of video lectures for predicting context-agnostic engagement and propose both cross-modal and modality-specific feature sets to achieve this task. We further test different strategies for quantifying learner engagement signals. We demonstrate the use of our approach in the case of data scarcity. Additionally, we perform a sensitivity analysis of the best performing model, which shows promising performance and can be easily integrated into an educational recommender system for OERs.

Investigating Learner Engagement in Flipped English as a Foreign Language Classroom

Abstract:Flipped classroom is an innovative instructional method. Recent technological developments have given rise to the popularity of flipped classroom. This study reports the findings of a questionnaire survey that investigates learners’ perceptions of flipped EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom, with a particular focus on their self-perceived learner engagement. The results of the study indicate that the learners generally have positive and favorable attitudes toward flipped classroom. Seventy-five percent of them consider flipped classroom useful in boosting their confidence in learning English and 50.6% think that they have become more interested in the course. Yet, it is also found that only 30.1% agree that flipped method has helped them to understand the course content more clearly. In addition, as high as 71.6% of the respondents agree that the flipped method can increase their motivation to participate in classroom learning activities, but only 44.9% believe that their engagement has been raised. While the results show that the students tend to accept this new teaching method, their evaluation of the actual effects of it is not as expected, which may be due to the lack of guidance and the weak connection between online self-study and classroom activities. Future studies are needed to explore how to strengthen these areas.

Abstract:<p>Flipped learning have emerged in the last decade to make students' learning more active and to enhance learning performance and students' motivation and engagement. These new approaches have been applied to different subjects at different educational levels. Specifically, in higher education most studies have focused on STEM subjects (see Lundin et al., 2018). In this paper, we present an experience about flipped classroom in two courses related to business management in a Spanish university. Results show that students are very satisfied with the experience and with the summative-formative assessment that has been used. In addition, students consider that their learning process has been better with this new methodology. Certainly, academic results have been improved with flipping courses, compared with traditional lectures. However, this type of methodology implies several challenges for both professors and students (some of them demonstrate resistance) and some limitations must also be considered.</p>
The effects of the flipped classroom on deep learning strategies and engagement at the undergraduate level

Abstract:The flipped classroom is a popular teaching method where course content is transferred to students through online resources to implement more active learning strategies in-class time. The study aims to investigate the effects of the flipped classroom on deep learning strategies and engagement at the undergraduate level, alongside students’ perspectives toward the flipped classroom. The research involved 97 freshmen students in Turkey. During a 7-week application process, the experimental group students learned the course content with the flipped classroom method, whereas the control group students learned the course content through the traditional method. The findings of the study revealed that the flipped classroom was more effective than the traditional method in terms of using deep learning strategies and increasing the levels of cognitive and emotional engagement. However, there was no difference in behavioral engagement levels between the experimental and control groups. The findings also showed that viewing pre-recorded videos before coming to class enabled students to comprehend course content better and easier. Flipped learning enabled students to develop their research and application skills. Technical facilities were the biggest difficulty for students in flipped learning. The implications for flipped learning are also discussed, including several techniques for controlling students’ viewing lecture videos and providing alternative course materials to students.

A Quasi-experimental Study of Chinese University English Learners' Engagement in a Flipped Classroom

Abstract:The demand for improving the quality of undergraduate education in China has prompted the nation-wide implementation of blended teaching approach, including flipped classroom. However, there is a lack of studies examining the effect of flipped language classroom on students' behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement. To address this issue, this study examined the effect of a flipped English classroom on student engagement by adopting a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design with mixed methods in a Chinese university. Data from 492 participants were collected and the results of the exploratory factor analysis ( EFA) indicated that the instrument for measuring English learners' engagement was sufficiently reliable. The results of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) showed that students in the experimental group (n = 268) reported significantly higher behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social engagement than students in the control group. Students' perceptions of their before-class and in-class learning experiences and their attitudes towards the flipped approach revealed some evidence for how and why flipped classroom could benefit language learners' engagement. The findings shed some light on future course design and the implementation of blended learning approach.

Abstract:In recent years, educational research has focused on analyzing significant differences in the academic performance of university students according to the intervention model of the traditional methodology vs. the flipped classroom. This empirical-analytical research is based on a quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent groups. The results reveal significant differences on the average grades of university students; those participating in the flipped classroom obtained higher scores than students following a traditional methodology, regardless of the specialization. Moreover, this research concludes that the flipped classroom approach offers an opportunity to transform the traditional system by improving the classroom environment, the teaching-learning process and the student’s assessment.

Abstract:One of the main problems faced by virtual or face-to-face education is the indifference, lack of motivation, and lack of interest that students show during their classes, which affects their academic performance. In this scenario, the teacher plays a determining role since he must seek and implement contextualized methodologies that capture students' attention to involve them in the learning process. Concerning the above, this research aims to identify the attributes of the flipped classroom for learning biology at the High School level. Besides, a quantitative descriptive and cross-sectional methodology took place to analyze this phenomenon. The results showed that the greater the use of tools with flipped classroom attributes, the students develop a comprehensive learning process with increased completion of activities and higher grade point averages, highlighting four main characteristics embedded in the flipped classroom: self-regulated learning, access to the content permanently, personalized teaching and active participation. Therefore, the contribution of the research lies in the innovative methodology for the biology teaching process based on independent learning with critical and reflective thinking.

Abstract:Abstract Many students are becoming increasingly disengaged in school, particularly in mathematics. This is an important problem as lack of engagement may threaten students’ achievement and performance in mathematics. A flipped learning pedagogy, which encourages students to take an active role in learning mathematics, has become a widely researched topic in recent years. However, few empirical studies to date have focused on the influence of flipped learning on student engagement in secondary mathematics classrooms. This qualitatively oriented study aimed to extend existing research on the role of flipped learning in behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement by adopting a social constructivist perspective to examine a secondary mathematics classroom. The participants were 33 high school students and their mathematics teacher, from whom data were gathered using multiple empirical methods. The results indicate that a flipped learning pedagogy has the potential to play a positive role in behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement as it provides learners with many possibilities for the learning of mathematics. However, to successfully flip learning, it is important to have a well-developed interactive design and to encourage social interaction in mathematics teaching and learning. Engagement was found to be negatively affected when the students had a negative perception of flipped learning and failed to complete the pre-class tasks. Overall, our results indicate that mathematics education can benefit from a flipped learning pedagogy as it has the potential to strengthen students’ engagement and mathematics learning in a social environment.

Abstract:The flipped learning methodology could play a key role in teacher training, as it exposes future teachers to experience this active methodology as students. With the purpose of shedding light on how students' perceptions may vary over time and how they can be related to the improvement of the flipped learning methodology, our study explores different factors in an eight-year period. Specifically, we analyse teaching performance considering data on students' perceptions from the 2015-2016 academic year to 2022-2023 of a course embedded within a master s degree in teacher training in Spain. Once future teachers had experienced flipped learning as students, a sample of 338 completed a survey regarding their perceptions of the flipped classroom approach and the instructor role. In our study, the more experienced the instructor, the better perception the students showed on both the flipped learning methodology and the performance of their teacher. In particular, we found that future teachers had (i) a good or very good opinion about flipped learning, regardless of their gender (ii) a more positive perception about flipped learning, teaching performance and course development in the last five academic years, (iii) no remarkable differences between study specialisations in those last academic years, and (iv) a better opinion about the flipped learning model when they have best grades. We discuss our findings according to six factors that affect the flipped learning experience and, thus, students' perception of flipped learning over time: "student characteristics", "teacher characteristics", "implementation", "task characteristics", "out-of-class activities" and "in-class activities"-factors already unveiled by a recent state-of-the-art review to enhance the effectiveness of flipped classroom. We can conclude that the instructor's teaching experience is a key factor that affects the implementation of flipped learning, influencing students' perception and, consequently, the success of this active methodology.
University Students’ Perception of the Usefulness of the Flipped Classroom Methodology

Abstract:In a digital and interconnected context, where educational processes are in constant change, active methodologies take on a relevant role by making students the protagonists of their learning. Among the different possibilities, the flipped classroom stands out for its time optimization, the incorporation of technological resources, and the personalization of the processes. The aim of this research is to analyze the perception of higher education students about the usefulness of the flipped classroom as a methodology. The information was collected with a validated instrument, which was applied to a sample of 123 students from the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Málaga (Spain). A positive evaluation of the usefulness of the flipped classroom as a learning methodology was reflected in the results, highlighting its instrumental dimension. Significant differences were perceived regarding the usefulness of the flipped classroom for the promotion of autonomous learning, which had a superior valuation according to women. In conclusion, the flipped classroom stands as a methodological alternative to promote learning that has a positive evaluation from the students that made up the sample.
Motivating Students to Engage in Preparation for Flipped Classrooms by Using Embedded Quizzes in Pre-class Videos

Abstract:Background: The success of flipped classrooms is dependent upon students’ preparation prior to class, the lack of which is the most common challenge associated with this teaching methodology. To mitigate this limitation, it is important to develop and assess methods of engaging learners during pre-class activities. Objective: To determine if quiz delivery method (embedded throughout versus after pre-class videos) affects students’ knowledge retention, grades, and video viewing behavior. Methods: Participating students were randomized to take quizzes, either during pre-class videos via PanoptoTM (EQV) or after pre-class videos in the traditional manner via MoodleTM (TMM). Outcomes assessed included students’ knowledge retention, scores on pre- and post-class quizzes, and pre-class video viewing behavior (total views and minutes viewed per student) during a three-week period. Having experienced both quizzing modalities during the semester, the perceptions from students in the EQV group were surveyed. Results: Baseline assessment results of both groups (n = 27 per group) were comparable with a median score of 33% (IQR: 17, 50) in both groups. Performance was also similar on knowledge retention [TMM: 67% (50, 83) vs. EQV: 83% (50, 83)], pre-class quiz scores [TMM: 90% (87, 97) vs. EQV: 93% (90, 95)], and post-class quiz scores [TMM: 93% (80, 100) vs. EQV: 87% (80, 100)], while students in the EQV group had more total views [10 (8, 12)] vs. [5 (2, 11)] and minutes viewed [71 (36, 108) vs. 35 (15, 81)]. Results from the perception survey administered to students in the EQV group (74.1% response rate) indicated a preference for embedded quizzes overall (58%) and for class preparation (75%) when compared with post-video quizzes. Conclusion: Students’ knowledge retention and performance were similar in both EQV and TMM groups, though students in the EQV group were more engaged with videos and most of them preferred this quiz delivery. Using embedded quizzes for formative rather than summative assessment might be an appropriate mechanism to encourage students’ viewing of pre-class videos and their preparation for flipped classes.

Abstract:<span>The use of recorded video in medical education is increasing. Video material may be assigned before scheduled sessions to create a flipped classroom. Here, the instructor may lead a session that is organized for discussion, interpretation, and reflection of the previewed content. We established conditions that lead to increased student participation and engagement with prerecorded content for a medical genetics section in a first-year medical school basic sciences integrated course. Preliminary analysis of an asynchronous video-based pre-professional program directed the design of video material to support a first semester medical genetics course. We compared student participation in, and opinion of, a flipped-classroom session based on written vs. video presentation of material. Student opinion was surveyed with audience response devices (clickers). Shorter videos that were created specifically for the course were preferred by students compared to recordings of previously delivered lectures. Students preferred videos to assigned reading material and consistent scheduling throughout the teaching semester increased student participation. Presentation of medical school content with previously recorded video material can be a useful teaching tool if properly implemented.</span>

Effects of embedded questions in pre-class videos on learner perceptions, video engagement, and learning performance in flipped classrooms

Abstract:Active Learning in Higher Education, Ahead of Print. This study investigates the impact of embedded questions in pre-class instructional videos on learner perceptions (cognitive load, emotional engagement, satisfaction, judgement of learning), video engagement (total views, total viewing time), and learning performance (retention, transfer). The research occurred in a real flipped classroom environment. We designed a quasi-experiment in which 86 university students from two natural classes watched pre-class instructional videos featuring procedural knowledge with or without interpolated true or false questions. Students were asked to practice the operation steps introduced in the videos. While they practiced operations, they could either pause the videos or let the videos continue playing. Face-to-face contact time was utilised to consolidate and extend previewed content with student-centred, instructor-facilitated problem-solving activities. Results revealed no discernible effects from embedded questions in pre-class videos on cognitive load, emotional engagement, satisfaction, judgement of learning, total views, knowledge retention or knowledge transfer. We speculate that the various in-class practice activities and frequent access to procedural knowledge videos offset the cognitive benefits derived from question-embedded videos. Learners who viewed question-embedded videos presented significantly reduced total viewing time, likely because the embedded questions scaffolded them in sustaining attention and efficiently pinpointing the exact information needed. Future research should identify boundary conditions for embedding questions in instructional videos (e.g. learning mode, type of knowledge) rather than indiscriminately applying this design strategy.

Multimodal Engagement Analysis from Facial Videos in the Classroom

Abstract:Student engagement is a key construct for learning and teaching. While most of the literature explored the student engagement analysis on computer-based settings, this paper extends that focus to classroom instruction. To best examine student visual engagement in the classroom, we conducted a study utilizing the audiovisual recordings of classes at a secondary school over one and a half month's time, acquired continuous engagement labeling per student (N=15) in repeated sessions, and explored computer vision methods to classify engagement levels from faces in the classroom. We trained deep embeddings for attentional and emotional features, training Attention-Net for head pose estimation and Affect-Net for facial expression recognition. We additionally trained different engagement classifiers, consisting of Support Vector Machines, Random Forest, Multilayer Perceptron, and Long Short-Term Memory, for both features. The best performing engagement classifiers achieved AUCs of .620 and .720 in Grades 8 and 12, respectively. We further investigated fusion strategies and found score-level fusion either improves the engagement classifiers or is on par with the best performing modality. We also investigated the effect of personalization and found that using only 60-seconds of person-specific data selected by margin uncertainty of the base classifier yielded an average AUC improvement of .084. <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://4.Our" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> main aim with this work is to provide the technical means to facilitate the manual data analysis of classroom videos in research on teaching quality and in the context of teacher training.

Abstract:A cyber-flipped course was conducted with the flipped classroom pedagogy by using a wholly online approach for all learning activities in asynchronous and synchronous class sessions. Literature suggests that traditional flipped courses can effectively enhance students' learning outcomes in comparison to non-flipped courses. However, conducting all asynchronous and synchronous learning activities using a wholly online approach has not been reported. This paper aimed to investigate how student engagement in four different types of learning activities affects their learning outcomes in a cyber-flipped course. Results show that the learning activities with the flipped classroom pedagogy can be successfully implemented and conducted in a wholly online course along with time and space flexibility for learners. This study also found that students who watched more pre-recorded video lectures tended to participate in the synchronous learning activities more actively and obtained a higher semester grade; higher completion of asynchronous learning activities had benefited students' understanding of the learning concepts. Furthermore, students who had a high level of readiness by attending synchronous class sessions on time and keeping their webcams activated had more frequent and proactive interactions with their peers and instructor.
Examining Students’ Perceptions towards Video-Based and Video-Assisted Active Learning Scenarios in Journalism and Communication Courses

Abstract:Audiovisual content is highly employed in modern education curricula. This study aimed to identify students’ perceptions regarding the use of video in the courses they attend. Quantitative research was conducted among students of journalism and communication studies. Four courses were used for this study that employ video-based and video-assisted teaching strategies for active learning. Students used videos in different educational settings for flipped learning, blended learning, and autonomous self-paced learning. Their perceptions were examined through an extended form of the Technology Acceptance Model, encompassing more parameters (such as self-efficacy, perceived enjoyment, satisfaction, attitude, and intention of use) to identify causal relationships. In addition, the roles of technical parameters, such as internet connection, audio quality, and video quality, along with the duration of a video, were explored. The findings reveal students’ positive attitudes towards videos, and all factors were significantly related to the intention of use. In addition, the technical aspects of the video did not constitute a problem in the educational process, most likely due to contemporary quality in internet connections and audiovisual productions along with playback equipment. The duration of the videos was also not presented as an issue as there are flexible ways to embed videos in the learning process. Overall, videos can be used in multiple active learning scenarios to enhance students’ motivation and engagement and provide a joyful, collaborative, and hospitable learning environment. Students are familiar with digital tools and technologies and seem to enjoy audiovisual material in the learning process.
