Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have favorable characteristics such as large specific surface area, high porosity, structural diversity, and pore surface modification, giving them great potential for development and attractive prospects in the research area of modern materials electrocatalysis. However, unsatisfactory catalytic activity and poor electronic conductivity are the main challenges facing MOFs. This review focuses on MOF-based materials used in electrocatalysis, based on the types of catalytic reactions that have used MOF-based materials in recent years along with their applications, and also looks at some new electrocatalytic materials and their future development prospects.

Abstract:The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be combined with various cathodic reactions to enable the electrochemical synthesis of diverse chemicals and fuels, particularly in water electrolysis for hydrogen production. It is however exhibiting a high overpotential due to the sluggish four-electron transfer process, which is considered the decisive reaction in energy conversion systems. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as the ideal catalysts for accelerating OER. This is primarily because of their orderly porous architecture, structural tailorability, and compositional diversity. This review systematically summarizes the recent research progress in pristine MOF electrocatalysts for OER, which covers the construction strategies and electrocatalytic performance of more than eight types of MOFs. Additionally, the partial/complete structural reconstructions and their effects on MOF-based OER electrocatalysts are highlighted. In particular, the development process of “discovery, explanation, and utilization” for the structural reconstructions of MOF electrocatalysts is outlined. Furthermore, the catalytic mechanisms are elaborated in detail, aiming to provide insight into the rational design and performance optimization of MOF-based OER electrocatalysts. The challenges and future perspectives of MOF-based OER electrocatalysts for industrial applications are also discussed.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into valuable energy and chemicals is an effective way to solve environmental problems and energy crises. Compared with other CO2 conversion methods, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion can be combined with clean energy, enhancing its energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and sustainability; the process can be improved significantly. In recent years, the self-assembly of metal ions/clusters and organic ligands to form crystalline compounds, known as metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), has attracted considerable attention. These materials have gained prominence due to their diverse range of potential applications and distinctive properties. This Review briefly introduces the basic principles of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 and the composition and properties of MOF materials. It summarizes the research progress of MOFs in the field of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction from the following aspects: pristine MOF catalysts, MOF-based composites, and MOF-derived electrocatalysts. Finally, the development prospects of MOFs are discussed in combination with the current research status, providing a reference for the development of more efficient and stable MOF electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Increasing demand for sustainable and clean energy is calling for the next‐generation energy conversion and storage technologies such as fuel cells, water electrolyzers, CO2/N2 reduction electrolyzers, metal–air batteries, etc. All these electrochemical processes involve oxygen electrocatalysis. Boosting the intrinsic activity and the active‐site density through rational design of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal–organic gels (MOGs) as precursors represents a new approach toward improving oxygen electrocatalysis efficiency. MOFs/MOGs afford a broad selection of combinations between metal nodes and organic linkers and are known to produce electrocatalysts with high surface areas, variable porosity, and excellent activity after pyrolysis. Some recent studies on MOFs/MOGs for oxygen electrocatalysis and their new perspectives in synthesis, characterization, and performance are discussed. New insights on the structural and compositional design in MOF/MOG‐derived oxygen electrocatalysts are summarized. Critical challenges and future research directions are also outlined.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to high-value carbon-based chemicals provides a sustainable approach to achieving an artificial carbon cycle. In the decade, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a kind of porous crystalline porous materials featuring well-defined structures, large surface area, high porosity, diverse components, easy tailorability, and controllable morphology, have attracted considerable research attention, serving as electrocatalysts to drive CO2 reduction. In this review, the reaction mechanisms of electrochemical CO2 reduction and the structure/component advantages of MOFs meeting the requirements of electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction are analyzed. After that, the representative progress for the precise fabrication of MOF-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction, focusing on catalytic site design and microenvironment modulation, are systemically summarized. Furthermore, the emerging applications and promising research for more practical scenarios related to electrochemical CO2 conversion are specifically proposed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future outlook of MOFs for electrochemical CO2 reduction are further discussed.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with high surface area and tunable chemical structures have attracted tremendous attention. Recently, there has been increasing interest in deriving advanced materials from MOFs for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. This progress report highlights recent breakthroughs in electrocatalysis by using MOF‐based novel catalysts, such as in oxygen reduction and evolution, hydrogen evolution and carbon dioxide reduction. The advantages of preparing electrocatalysts from MOFs are introduced and discussed. Then, the development of MOF derived electrocatalysis‐active products, such as heteroatom‐doped carbon, metal oxide (MO), metal sulfide (MS), metal carbide (MC), metal phosphide (MP) and their hybrids with carbon, are summarized. The detailed functions of these materials in representative electrocatalysis systems are also reviewed. The demonstrated examples will provide understanding in preparing highly active and stable electrocatalysts. The progress report concludes with the future applications of MOF‐based materials in the field of electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging hot materials in the field of catalysis, exhibiting unique structural tunability, multifunctionality, and reproducibility, and their derivatives (also MOFs) are mostly applied in eco‐friendly energy conversion electrocatalysis. Carbon neutrality is an important goal for humanity . As an eco‐friendly technology, electrocatalytic clean energy conversion technology has emerged in the 21st century. Currently, metal‐organic framework (MOF)‐based electrocatalysis, including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), are the mainstream energy catalytic reactions, which are driven by electrocatalysis. In this paper, the current advanced characterizations for the analyses of MOF‐based electrocatalytic energy reactions have been described in details, such as density function theory (DFT), machine learning, operando/in situ characterization, which provide in‐depth analyses of the reaction mechanisms related to the above reactions reported in the past years. The practical applications that have been developed for some of the responses that are of application values, such as fuel cells, metal‐air batteries, and water splitting have also been demonstrated. This paper aims to maximize the potential of MOF‐based electrocatalysts in the field of energy catalysis, and to shed light on the development of current intense energy situations.

Abstract:Considerable attention has been paid to the utilization of CO2, an abundant carbon source in nature. In this regard, porous catalysts have been eagerly explored with excellent performance for photo-/electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to high valued products. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring large surface area, high porosity, tunable composition and unique structural characteristics, have been widely exploited in catalytic CO2 reduction. This Minireview first reports the current progress of MOFs in CO2 reduction. Then, a specific interest is focused on MOFs in photo-/electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 by modifying their metal centers, organic linkers, and pores. Finally, the future directions of study are also highlighted to satisfy the requirement of practical applications.

Abstract:The reasonable design and preparation of cheap, Earth-abundant, efficient, and durable heterogeneous electrocatalytic materials are a probable solution to the key problems of energy shortages and environmental pollution. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely utilized as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), overall water splitting, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) owing to their high porosity, adjustable pore size/shape, redox characteristics, and other special structural features. This review generalizes the representative recent progress of MOFs as heterogeneous catalytic electrocatalysts for water splitting and the CO2RR and proposes strategies for devising MOF-based electrocatalytic catalysts for water splitting and the CO2RR. Finally, it summarizes the basic understanding and challenges of electrocatalysis on MOFs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Metal‐organic framework electrocatalysts are reviewed including their design, synthesis and wide uses such as electrochemical reactions, electrocatalysis, and storage. Due to the increasing global energy demands, scarce fossil fuel supplies, and environmental issues, the pursued goals of energy technologies are being sustainable, more efficient, accessible, and produce near zero greenhouse gas emissions. Electrochemical water splitting is considered as a highly viable and eco‐friendly energy technology. Further, electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a cleaner strategy for CO2 utilization and conversion to stable energy (fuels). One of the critical issues in these cleaner technologies is the development of efficient and economical electrocatalyst. Among various materials, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are becoming increasingly popular because of their structural tunability, such as pre‐ and post‐ synthetic modifications, flexibility in ligand design and its functional groups, and incorporation of different metal nodes, that allows for the design of suitable MOFs with desired quality required for each process. In this review, the design of MOF was discussed for specific process together with different synthetic methods and their effects on the MOF properties. The MOFs as electrocatalysts were highlighted with their performances from the aspects of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical CO2RR. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Abstract:The increasing demands of energy and environmental concerns have motivated researchers to cultivate renewable energy resources for replacing conventional fossil fuels. The modern energy conversion and storage devices required high efficient and stable electrocatalysts to fulfil the market demands. In previous years, we are witness for considerable developments of scientific attention in Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) and their derived nanomaterials in electrocatalysis. In current review article, we have discussed the progress of optimistic strategies and approaches for the manufacturing of MOF-derived functional materials and their presentation as electrocatalysts for significant energy related reactions. MOFs functioning as a self-sacrificing template bid different benefits for the preparation of metal nanostructures, metal oxides and carbon-abundant materials promoting through the porous structure, organic functionalities, abundance of metal sites and large surface area. Thorough study for the recent advancement in the MOF-derived materials, metal-coordinated N-doped carbons with single-atom active sites are emerging candidates for future commercial applications. However, there are some tasks that should be addressed, to attain improved, appreciative and controlled structural parameters for catalytic and chemical behavior.

Abstract:Exploiting advanced electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for the development of metal-air batteries, fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts with high specific areas, abundant expose active sites, and porous structures is an effective approach to improve the electrocatalytic performances. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous crystalline materials, which possess large surface areas, high porosities, componential and structural diversity, has shown great potential as efficient OER electrocatalysts. This review focus on the recent progress of fabrication and utilization of transition metal (e.g., Fe, Co, and Ni) based MOF materials including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and their derivatives for OER. A variety of typical strategies, including synthetic designs, compositional, and structural modifications for activity improvement of the MOF-based materials in the OER are outlined and discussed. Based on the previous achievements, the current state of the art and the perspectives for the future development of the field are summarized.

Abstract:In view of the clean and sustainable energy, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based materials, including pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and their derivatives are emerging as unique electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Thanks to their tunable compositions and diverse structures, efficient MOF-based materials provide new opportunities to accelerate the sluggish ORR at the cathode in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. This Minireview first provides some introduction of ORR and MOFs, followed by the classification of MOF-based electrocatalysts towards ORR. Recent breakthroughs in engineering MOF-based ORR electrocatalysts are highlighted with an emphasis on synthesis strategy, component, morphology, structure, electrocatalytic performance, and reaction mechanism. Finally, some current challenges and future perspectives for MOF-based ORR electrocatalysts are also discussed.

Abstract:As a youthful family of crystalline porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), assembled by inorganic vertices (metal ions or clusters) and organic ligands, feature ultrahigh porosity, high surface area, and synthetic and structural tailorability, along with relatively easy synthesis, making them excellent candidates for a large number of applications. Recently, increasing research interest in the electrochemical fields with regard to the environment and energy has been received. Lots of MOFs have been designed, prepared, and used in electrochemical applications, exhibiting fascinating performances. Here, the rational fabrication of electrochemical-application-directed functional MOFs and MOF composites is appraised. The synthetic strategies for the enhancement of corres-ponding MOF electrochemical behaviors are summarized and the relationship between structure and electrochemical performance is discussed. It is expected that the summary will be helpful for the future development of related MOFs and MOF composites with an excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Excessive fossil fuel consumption has led to a rapid increase in CO 2 concentration, posing a threat to the global environment. The electrochemical conversion of CO 2 back into valuable carbon-containing products offers a promising solution; however the lack of efficient electrocatalysts remains a challenge for high-efficiency CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising electrocatalysts owing to their superior activity and well-defined active sites and are recognized as model electrocatalysts for the fundamental study of electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms. In this review, focusing on the roles of metals and the coordination environment, we have discussed the molecular engineering of MOF electrocatalysts for the CO 2 RR, including regulation of metal nodes, modulation of surrounding organic ligands, and post-modification of MOFs. In addition, stability of MOFs and transformation strategies through the wet chemistry method and pyrolysis treatment to obtain MOF derivatives are summarized. Metal centers and the coordination environment of N atoms and other heteroatoms of MOF derivatives are discussed for their performance in the CO 2 RR. Furthermore, computational simulations and advanced characterization studies are also summarized to understand the correlation between the structure and performance of MOFs and their derivatives. By overviewing the progress and current challenges of MOF electrocatalysts and their derivatives for the CO 2 RR, we are aiming to provide insights into design principles and propose future directions for high-efficiency electrocatalysts, paving the way toward carbon neutrality.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Chemically bonded MOFs on supports are desirable yet lacking in routine synthesis, as they may allow variable structural evolution and the underlying structure-activity relationship to be disclosed. Herein, direct MOF synthesis is achieved by an organic acid-etching strategy (AES). Using π-conjugated ferrocene (Fc) dicarboxylic acid as the etching agent and organic ligand, a series of MFc-MOF (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Zn) nanosheets are synthesized on the metal supports. The crystal structure is studied using X-ray diffraction and low-dose transmission electron microscopy, which is quasi-lattice-matched with that of the metal, enabling in-situ MOF growth. Operando Raman and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy disclose that the NiFc-MOF features dynamic structural rebuilding during OER. The reconstructed one showing optimized electronic structures with an upshifted total d-band center, high M-O bonding state occupancy, and localized electrons on adsorbates indicated by density functional theory calculations, exhibits outstanding OER performance with a fairly low overpotential (130 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and good stability (144 h). The newly established approach for direct MOF synthesis and structural reconstruction disclosure stimulate the development of more prudent catalysts for advancing OER.

Abstract:As emerging crystalline porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used as sacrificial precursors for the synthesis of carbon materials, metal/metal compounds, and their composites with tunable and controllable nanostructures and chemical compositions for electrochemical energy applications. Herein, recent progress of MOF-derived nanomaterials for various electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications including Li-ion batteries, Li-S batteries, Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, water splitting, and oxygen reduction reaction is reviewed. Structural and compositional design of MOF-derived nanomaterials is systematically summarized, which may hopefully offer inspirations and guidances for future development of MOF-derived nanomaterials for more efficient and more durable electrochemical energy applications.

Modulating Metal–Organic Frameworks as Advanced Oxygen Electrocatalysts

Abstract:Oxygen‐related electrocatalysis, including those used for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), play a central role in green‐energy related technologies. Rational fabrication of effective oxygen electrocatalysts is crucial for the development of oxygen related energy devices, such as fuel cells and rechargeable metal–air batteries. Recently, owing to their tunable compositions and microstructures, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) based materials have drawn extensive attention as nonprecious oxygen electrocatalysts. Various strategies have been developed to fabricate MOF‐based electrocatalysts and regulate their active sites, such as heterometal doping, defect engineering, morphology tuning, heterostructure construction, and hybridization. In this review, by focusing on various modulation strategies aiming at active sites, the recent advances of MOF‐based electrocatalysts are summarized. The synthetic methods used to synthesize various MOF‐based oxygen electrocatalysts are discussed, followed by the underlying engineering mechanisms required to allow performance enhancement, and finally some existing challenges that hinder for their practical applications are discussed alongside a perspective on their possible future.
