Coherence in George Orwell ' s 1984 : A Linguistic Study

Abstract:The primary aim of the study is to investigate the notion of coherence in Orwell‟s Nineteen Eighty-Four from a metadiscoursal perspective. In this respect, the study adopts Hyland's (2005) interpersonal model of metadiscourse markers. The study attempts to outline metadiscourse markers contribution to the overall coherence of discourse. A secondary aim is relating the findings of the study to the implication which metadiscourse devices might have on achieving a preferred interpretation of English literary texts. The findings of this study reveal that metadiscourse devices contribute to raise the level of interaction between the writer and the reader. This enables readers to achieve a preferred interpretation of the text which in return contributes to raise the overall coherence of discourse.
