Abstract:Gas transport under confinement exhibits a plethora of physical and chemical phenomena that differ from those observed in bulk media, owing to the deviations of continuum description at the molecular level. In biological systems, gas channels play indispensable roles in various physiological functions by regulating gas transport across cell membranes. Therefore, investigating gas transport under such confinement is crucial for comprehending cellular physiological activities. Moreover, leveraging these underlying mechanisms can enable the construction of bioinspired artificial nanofluidic devices with tailored gas transport properties akin to those found in biological channels. This review provides a comprehensive summary of confined gas transport mechanisms, focusing on the unique effects arising from nanoconfinement. Additionally, we categorize nanoconfinement spaces based on dimensionality to elucidate their control over gas transport behavior. Finally, we highlight the potential of bioinspired smart gas membranes that mimic precise modulation of transportation observed in organisms. To conclude, we present a concise outlook on the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly expanding field.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the mechanism and behavior of confined gas transport in low - dimensional materials. Specifically, the research aims to:
1. **Understand the unique effects of confined gas transport**: At the nanoscale, the behavior of gas transport is significantly different from the continuum - medium description at the macroscopic scale. These differences mainly stem from surface effects at the molecular level. Therefore, studying the mechanism of gas transport at the nanoscale is crucial for understanding cellular physiological activities.
2. **Classify nano - confined spaces**: Classify nano - confined spaces according to dimension to clarify their controlling effect on gas - transport behavior. This helps to better understand how nanostructures of different dimensions affect gas transport.
3. **Explore the potential of biomimetic intelligent gas membranes**: By imitating the mechanisms of precisely regulating gas transport in biological systems, design biomimetic artificial nanofluidic devices with specific gas - transport characteristics. These devices can be used in fields such as energy recovery, purification, chemical sensing, and medical physiology.
4. **Look forward to future research directions**: Discuss the challenges and opportunities in current research and provide guidance and suggestions for future research.
### Specific problem analysis
- **Background**: Gas transport at the nano - and angstrom - scales is a very important topic both theoretically and practically, involving multiple fields such as energy recovery, storage, purification, chemical sensing, and medical physiology. In biological systems, gas is generally considered to diffuse through cell membranes via lipid membranes, but this traditional view has been challenged by some physiological phenomena.
- **Discovery**: In 1998, Boron's research team discovered the promoting effect of AQP1 aquaporin on the permeability of carbon dioxide and first proposed the existence of gas channels. Since then, many studies have shown that Aquaporins and Rhesus proteins can serve as transport paths for NO, CO₂, and NH₃, and different types of proteins have different selectivities for gases.
- **Mechanism**: The paper discusses in detail the mechanism of confined gas transport, especially the unique effects at the nanoscale. According to the Knudsen number (\( \text{Kn}=\frac{\lambda}{l_0} \), where \( \lambda \) is the mean free path and \( l_0 \) is the characteristic size of the structure), gas transport can be divided into four main regions: continuous flow, slip flow, transition flow, and molecular flow.
- **Artificial structures**: In recent years, the development of new materials and nanofabrication technologies has enabled the preparation of many artificial nanostructures, which exhibit interesting gas - transport phenomena. According to topological features, these structures can be divided into nanopores, one - dimensional nanotubes, and two - dimensional nano - channels.
- **Biomimetic intelligent gas membranes**: By imitating the mechanisms of precisely regulating gas transport in biological systems, biomimetic intelligent gas membranes with specific gas - transport characteristics are designed, and these membranes have broad application prospects in the energy, environment, and medical fields.
### Conclusion
The paper comprehensively summarizes the mechanism of confined gas transport, with a focus on the unique effects at the nanoscale. Through the classification and analysis of nanostructures of different dimensions, the paper reveals the controlling effect of these structures on gas - transport behavior. Finally, the paper emphasizes the potential of biomimetic intelligent gas membranes and looks forward to future research directions.
