Abstract:The application of crop residues to increase soil fertility has been widely accepted. However, the effect of the residues on the efficiency of nitrification inhibitors (NIs) such as 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP) is not fully understood. On the other hand, the growth of nitrate-demanding plants like spinach might be negatively affected by application of NIs. The aim of the research was to investigate the impact of corn straw in the combination with different nitrogen (N) rates (N fertilizer with and without DMPP) on spinach growth and N use efficiency (NUE), the leaf nitrate concentration, the activity of nitrite reductase (NiR) and nitrate reductase (NR) of spinach shoot, and the concentration of soil ammonium and nitrate. The experimental treatments of the research included ( a ) the factor of different N rates at seven levels (un-treated soil, N 0 ; soil treated with 150 kg N ha −1 , N 150 ; soil treated with 225 kg N ha −1 , N 225 ; soil treated with 300 kg N ha −1 , N 300 ; soil treated with N 150 + DMPP; soil treated with N225 + DMPP; and soil treated with N 300 + DMPP) and ( b ) the factor of corn straw (CS) at two levels (0, 0%CS and 2% ( w/w ), 2%CS) with 6 replications during a spinach-cultivation period of 56 days. In this assay, ammonium sulfate (21% NH 4 + -N and 24% S) was used as N without DMPP and NovaTec®Solub 21 (24% S, 0.8% DMPP, and 21% NH 4 + -N) was used as N containing DMPP. Results showed that 2%CS increased the growth of spinach by 28.4% compared to 0%CS. The use of DMPP had no significant effect on the growth of spinach at 150 and 225 kg N ha −1 , but diminished the growth of this plant at the level of 300 kg N ha −1 . However, the application of 2%CS diminished the negative impact of DMPP on spinach growth, as at N 300 + DMPP compared to N 300 , a significant decrease in spinach growth was not observed. Nitrogen use efficiency at level of 2%CS was significantly higher compared to 0%CS (a 20.8% increase), and DMPP at the level of 150 kg N ha –1 increased NUE by 7.2%. The application of N containing DMPP decreased NO 3 – concentration of spinach leaf by 29.2% compared to control, thereby decreased both NR and NiR activities. Regression analysis suggested that leaf NR activity can be a more appropriate physiological indicator to the availability of soil nitrate compared to leaf NiR activity, whereas the addition of 2%CS to soil increased nitrate concentration of spinach leaf by 36.1% and NR and NiR activities by 27.8 and 48.1%, respectively. Also, the addition of 2%CS diminished the efficiency of DMPP, as ammonium concentration of soil was higher in treatments containing DMPP without CS at 56 days after plant cultivation. In general, corn straw in the combination with DMPP could improve spinach biomass at high levels of N by decreasing the efficiency of DMPP. These findings provide the useful knowledge for managing the application rate of N fertilizers containing DMPP in crop residues–amended soils.
