Abstract:We provide the complete four loop perturbative renormalization of a low temperature statistical mechanics model of flat polymerized membranes. Within a non-local effective flexural theory based on transverse elastic fluctuations, we determine analytically, at the four existing fixed points, the anomalous elasticity critical exponent $\eta$ which controls all scaling behaviors in the theory. Results are obtained as apparently convergent series, enabling precise estimates without resummations. We independently confirm and complement the results of recent four-loop work [Pikelner 2022 EPL 138 17002] carried out in a different model. We also find good agreement with non-perturbative approaches and experiments on soft materials and graphene.

Abstract:We investigate the flat phase of quantum polymerized phantom membranes by means of a nonperturbative renormalization group approach. We first implement this formalism for general quantum polymerized membranes and derive the flow equations that encompass both quantum and thermal fluctuations. We then deduce and analyze the flow equations relevant to study the flat phase and discuss their salient features : quantum to classical crossover and, in each of these regimes, strong to weak coupling crossover. We finally illustrate these features in the context of free standing graphene physics.

Abstract:Recent progresses in the understanding of the scaling behavior of self-avoiding flexible polymerized membranes (tethered manifolds) are reviewed. They rely on a new general renormalization group approach for a class of models with non-local singular interactions. This approach allows to prove the existence of a epsilon-expansion for the scaling exponents, and validates the one loop results obtained by direct renormalization methods. Applications of the method to polymerized membranes at the tricritical Theta-point are presented.

Abstract:Membranes are of great technological and biological as well as theoretical interest. Two main classes of membranes can be distinguished: Fluid membranes and polymerized, tethered membranes. Here, we review progress in the theoretical understanding of polymerized membranes, i.e. membranes with a fixed internal connectivity. We start by collecting basic physical properties, clarifying the role of bending rigidity and disorder, theoretically and experimentally as well as numerically. We then give a thorough introduction into the theory of self-avoiding membranes, or more generally non-local field theories with delta-like interactions. Based on a proof of perturbative renormalizability for non-local field-theories, renormalization group calculations can be performed up to 2-loop order, which in 3 dimensions predict a crumpled phase with fractal dimension of about 2.4. The tricritical behavior of membranes is discussed and shown to be quite different from that of polymers. Dynamical properties are studied in the same frame-work. Along the same lines, disorder can be included leading to interesting applications. We also construct a generalization of the O(N)-model, which in the limit N->0 reduces to self-avoiding membranes in analogy with the O(N)-model, which in the limit N->0 reduces to self-avoiding polymers. We also describe the instanton-contribution governing the large-order behavior of perturbation theory. Some technical details are relegated to the appendices.

Abstract:We study scaling properties of self avoiding polymer stars and networks of arbitrary given but fixed topology. We use massive field theoretical renormalization group framework to calculate critical exponents governing their universal properties (star exponents). Calculations are performed directly in three dimensions, renormalization group functions are obtained in three loop approximation. Resulting asymptotic series for star exponents are resummed with the help of Pade-Borel and conformal mapping transformation.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of quenched elastic disorder on the nature of the crumpling-to-flat transition of $D$-dimensional polymerized membranes using a two-loop computation near the upper critical dimension $D_c=4$. While the pure system undergoes fluctuation-induced first order transitions below $D_c$ and for an embedding dimension $d<d_{c,pure}\simeq 218.2$, one observes, in presence of disorder, the emergence of various regions of second order governed by a disordered stable fixed point for $d<d_{c1}\sim d_{c,pure}$. This opens the possibility of a new universality class associated with the crumpling-to-flat transition of disordered membranes in $d=3$

Abstract:The scaling properties of self-avoiding tethered membranes at the tricritical point (theta-point) are studied by perturbative renormalization group methods. To treat the 3-body repulsive interaction (known to be relevant for polymers), new analytical and numerical tools are developped and applied to 1-loop calculations. These technics are a prerequisite to higher order calculations for self-avoiding membranes. The cross-over between the 3-body interaction and the modified 2-body interaction, attractive at long range, is studied through a new double epsilon-expansion. It is shown that the latter interaction is relevant for 2-dimensional membranes at the theta-point.

Abstract:The statistical mechanics of polymer loops entangled in the two-dimensional array of randomly distributed obstacles of infinite length is discussed. The area of the loop projected to the plane perpendicular to the obstacles is used as a collective variable in order to re-express a (mean field) effective theory for the polymer conformation. It is explicitly shown that the loop undergoes a collapse transition to a randomly branched polymer with $R\propto lN^\frac{1}{4}$.

Abstract:Using self-consistent field and density-functional theories, we first investigate colloidal self-assembling of colloid/polymer films confined between two soft surfaces grafted by polymers. With the increase of colloidal concentrations, the film undergoes a series of transitions from disordered liquid $\to$ sparse square $\to$ hexagonal (or mixed square-hexagonal) $\to$ dense square $\to$ cylindric structures in plane, which results from the competition between the entropic elasticity of polymer brushes and the steric packing effect of colloidal particles. A phase diagram displays the stable regions of different in-layer ordering structures as the colloidal concentration is varied and layering transitions as the polymer-grafted density is decreased. Our results show a new control mechanism to stabilize the ordering of structures within the films.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a generalization of the diffusive motion of point-particles in a turbulent convective flow with given correlations to a polymer or membrane. In analogy to the passive scalar problem we call this the passive polymer or membrane problem. We shall focus on the expansion about the marginal limit of velocity-velocity correlations which are uncorrelated in time and grow with the distance x as |x|^epsilon, and epsilon small. This relation gets modified for polymers and membranes (the marginal advecting flow has correlations which are shorter ranged.) The construction is done in three steps: First, we reconsider the treatment of the passive scalar problem using the most convenient treatment via field theory and renormalization group. We explicitly show why IR-divergences and thus the system-size appear in physical observables. In a second step, we reformulate the problem in terms of a Langevin equation. This is not only interesting in its own, but also gives an efficient algorithm to determine S^{2n} numerically. In a third and final step, we generalize the Langevin treatment of a particle to polymers and membranes, or more generally to an elastic object of inner dimension D with 0 <= D <= 2. These objects can intersect each other. We also analyze what happens when self-intersections are no longer allowed.

A universality class for RNA-like polymers and double polymers

Abstract:We examine the statistics of conformations of a linear polymer in a solvent. The polymer is allowed to form double polymers. We closely follow a classical technique to derive a field theory for the problem from an $O\left(n\right)$ symmetric spin model. The field theory is a model for RNA or DNA with constant binding energy per monomer. It is shown that there is a stable renormalization group fixed point, at which the double polymer decouples from the single-strand polymer and becomes a branched polymer of the conventional type with a three-point interaction. To reach this fixed point, at least one parameter must be adjusted. The critical dimension is eight. Fisher-renormalization, equation of state and critical exponents are reproduced in this limit. The single-strand polymer depends on the double-strand polymer and disappears at the critical point, but has its own critical exponents.

Abstract:We study the force-induced unfolding of a homopolymer on the three dimensional Sierpinski gasket. The polymer is subject to a contact energy between nearest neighbour sites not consecutive along the chain and to a stretching force. The hierarchical nature of the lattice we consider allows for an exact treatment which yields the phase diagram and the critical behaviour. We show that for this model mean field predictions are not correct, in particular in the exact phase diagram there is {\em not} a low temperature reentrance and we find that the force induced unfolding transition below the theta temperature is second order.

Abstract:Semiflexible polymers are ubiquitous in biological systems, e.g., as building blocks of the cytoskeleton, and they also play an important role in various materials due to their ability to form liquid-crystalline order. These rigid macromolecules are characterized by numerous (hierarchical) length-scales that define their static and dynamic properties. Confinement can promote uniform order, e.g., through capillary nematization in narrow slits, but it can also introduce long-ranged disruptions of the nematic ordering field through (unavoidable) topological defects in spherical containers. This Perspective concentrates on the theoretical description and computational modeling of such confined systems, with the focus on spherical containers that play an important role in the injection/ejection of double-stranded DNA from viral capsids and the fabrication of nematic droplets. Basic principles and recent developments are reviewed, followed by a discussion of open questions and potential directions for future research in this field.

Abstract:Ideal crystalline membranes, realized by graphene and other atomic monolayers, exhibit rich physics - a universal anomalous elasticity of the critical "flat" phase characterized by a negative Poisson ratio, universally singular elastic moduli, order-from-disorder and a crumpling transition. We formulate a generalized $D$-dimensional field theory, parameterized by an $O(d)\times O(D)$ tensor field with an {\it energetic} longitudinal constraint. For a soft constraint the resulting field theory describes a new class of a fluctuating "tattered" membranes, exhibiting a nonzero density of topological connectivity defects - slits, cracks and faults at an effective medium level. For hard, infinite-coupling constraint, the model reproduces the conventional crystalline membrane and its crumpling transition, and thereby demonstrates the essence of the difference between an elastic membrane and conventional field theories. Two additional fixed points emerge within the critical manifold, (i) globally attractive, "isotropic" $O(d)\times O(D)$, and (ii) "transverse", which in $D=2$ is the exact "dual" of the elastic membrane. Their properties are obtained in general $D,d$ from the renormalization group and the self-consistent screening analyses.

Abstract:We present results of the study of the non-monotonous behavior of the Lifshitz line as a function of temperature in ternary homopolymer/diblock-copolymer mixtures. The non-monotonous behavior of the Lifshitz line is due to the wave vector dependence of fluctuational corrections, which we treat in the framework of the renormalization group method. Our results are in agreement with the experimental findings of Schwahn et al.[1,2]

Abstract:We investigate the flat phase of $D$-dimensional crystalline membranes embedded in a $d$-dimensional space and submitted to both metric and curvature quenched disorders using a nonperturbative renormalization group approach. We identify a second order phase transition controlled by a finite-temperature, finite-disorder fixed point unreachable within the leading order of $\epsilon=4-D$ and $1/d$ expansions. This critical point divides the flow diagram into two basins of attraction: that associated to the finite-temperature fixed point controlling the long distance behaviour of disorder-free membranes and that associated to the zero-temperature, finite-disorder fixed point. Our work thus strongly suggests the existence of a whole low-temperature glassy phase for quenched disordered graphene, graphene-like compounds and, more generally, crystalline membranes.

Abstract:We formulate a density functional theory that describes the phase behavior of hard rods and depleting polymers, as realized in recent experiments on suspensions of \emph{fd} virus and non-adsorbing polymer. The theory predicts the relative stability of nematic droplets, stacked smectic columns, and a recently discovered phase of isolated monolayers of rods, or colloidal membranes. We find that a minimum rod aspect ratio is required for stability of colloidal membranes and that collective protrusion undulations are the dominant effect that stabilizes this phase. The theoretical predictions are shown to be qualitatively consistent with experimental and computational results.

Abstract:We introduce a technique relying on the use of auxiliary fields in order to eliminate explicit field-derivatives that plague the high orders renormalization group treatment of shift-symmetric, derivative, theories. This technique simplifies drastically the computation of fluctuations in such theories. This is illustrated by deriving the two-loop renormalization group equations and the three-loop anomalous dimension of the $\varphi^4$ derivative theory in $D=4-\epsilon$, which is also relevant to describe the crumpled-to-flat transition of polymerized membranes. Some features of this transition are provided.

Abstract:We study a solution of interacting semiflexible polymers with curvature energy in poor-solvent conditions on the d-dimensional cubic lattice using mean-field theory and Monte Carlo computer simulations. Building upon past studies on a single chain, we construct a field-theory representation of the system and solve it within a mean-field approximation supported by Monte Carlo simulations in d=3. A gas-liquid transition is found in the temperature-density plane that is then interpreted in terms of real systems. Interestingly, we find this transition to be independent of the bending rigidity. Past classical Flory-Huggins and Flory mean-field results are shown to be particular cases of this more general framework. Perspectives in terms of guiding experimental results towards optimal conditions are also proposed.

Furthermore, we extend our analysis to higher-order physical models, incorporating techniques from quantum field theory and exploring quantum coherent states in complex systems. This comprehensive approach not only enhances the precision of calculating elastic anomalous exponents but also provides deeper insights into the topological structures underlying phase transitions and fixed-point behaviors. The methodologies developed herein pave the way for future explorations into more intricate many-body systems.This paper presents an extensive mathematical framework aimed at enhancing the complexity and extending the theory of Fermi condensates to high-temperature regimes. By incorporating a range of mathematical formulations from thermodynamics, statistical physics, and quantum field theory, we derive key equations and their high-temperature modifications. The study encompasses corrections to the Fermi-Dirac distribution, thermodynamic quantities of Fermi condensates, pairing gap equations within the BCS theory, correlation functions, modified Hamiltonians, path integral representations, and hydrodynamic equations.
