Abstract:CR Yamabe constant is an invariant of a compact CR manifold and can be used to distinguish CR structures. We construct a compact simply-connected 7-manifold admitting two strongly pseudoconvex CR structures with distinct signs of CR Yamabe constant.

Abstract:Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n > 2. The k-curvature, for k = 1,2,...,n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k = 1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions is known for the case k = 2, n = 4, for locally conformally flat manifolds and for the cases k > n/2. In this paper we prove the solvability of the k-Yamabe problem in the remaining cases k ≤ n/2, under the hypothesis that the problem is variational. This includes all of the cases k = 2 as well as the locally conformally flat case.

Abstract:Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are 3-dimensional closed (compact without boundary) CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.

Abstract:An explicit classification of simply connected compact homogeneous CR manifolds G/L of codimension one, with non-degenerate Levi form, is given. There are three classes of such manifolds: a) the standard CR homogeneous manifolds which are homogeneous S^1-bundles over a flag manifold F, with CR structure induced by an invariant complex structure on F; b) the Morimoto-Nagano spaces, i.e. sphere bundles $S(N)\subset TN$ of a compact rank one symmetric space N = G/H, with the CR structure induced by the natural complex structure of $TN = G^\C/H^\C$; c) the following manifolds: $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_{n-2}$, $SU_p\times SU_q/T^1 \cdot U_{p-2}\cdot U_{q-2}$, $SU_n/T^1\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_2\cdot SU_{n-4}$, $SO_{10}/T^1\cdot SO_6$, $E_6/T^1\cdot SO_8$; these manifolds admit canonical holomorphic fibrations over a flag manifold (F,J_F) with typical fiber S(S^k), where k = 2, 3, 5, 7 or 9, respectively; the CR structure is determined by the invariant complex structure J_F on F and by an invariant CR structure on the typical fiber, depending on one complex parameter.

Abstract:On a compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold ( M , θ ) , we consider the CR Yamabe constant of its infinite conformal covering. By using the maximum principles, we then prove a uniqueness theorem for the CR Yamabe flow on a complete noncompact CR manifold. Finally we obtain some properties of the CR Yamabe soliton on complete noncompact CR manifolds.

Abstract:Let X-1 and X-2 be two compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension 2n - 1 >= 5 which are boundaries of complex varieties V-1 and V-2 with only isolated normal singularities in C-N1 and C-N2, respectively. We show that any nonconstant CR morphism from X-1 to X-2 can be extended to a finite holomorphic covering map from V-1 to V-2 in the case where V-2 has only isolated complete intersection singularities. In particular, there is no nonconstant CR morphism between the links of two isolated complete intersection singularities with different embedding codimensions. Finally, using Kohn-Rossi cohomology, we obtain some sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of CR morphisms from X-1 to X-2.

Abstract:In this paper, we build a compactification by a strictly pseudoconvex CR structure for a complete and non-compact Kähler manifold whose curvature tensor is asymptotic to that of the complex hyperbolic space. To do so, we study in depth the evolution of various geometric objects that are defined on the leaves of some foliation of the complement of a suitable convex subset, called an essential subset , whose leaves are the equidistant hypersurfaces above this latter subset. With a suitable renormalization which is closely related to the anisotropic nature of the ambient geometry, the above mentioned geometric objects converge near infinity, inducing the claimed structure on the boundary at infinity.

A compactness result for the CR Yamabe problem in three dimensions

Abstract:We prove the compactness of the set of solutions to the CR Yamabe problem on a compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold of dimension three whose blow-up manifolds at every point have positive p-mass. As a corollary we deduce that compactness holds for CR-embeddable manifolds which are not CR-equivalent to $S^3$. The theorem is proved by blow-up analysis.

Abstract:Let X be a strongly pseudoconvex compact 3-dimensional CR manifolds which bounds a complex variety with isolated singularities in some C N . The weighted dual graph of the exceptional set of the minimal good resolution of V is a CR invariant of X; in case X has a tranversal holomorphic S 1 action, we show that it is a complete topological invariant of except for two special cases. When X is a rational CR manifolds, we give explicit algebraic algorithms to compute the graph invariant in terms of the ring structure of ⊕ k=0 ∞ m k /m k+1 , where m is the maximal ideal of each singularity. An example is computed explicitly to demonstrate how the algorithms work.

Abstract:In previous work (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.12067" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.12067">arXiv:2205.12067</a>), we defined a notion of a generalized Sasakian structure in the context of generalized contact geometry, the odd dimensional analogue of generalized complex geometry introduced by Hitchin and Gualtieri. We show here that k-contact manifolds are generalized Sasakian if and only if they are classically Sasakian. We show also that strictly pseudo-convex CR manifolds are always generalized Sasakian.

Abstract:The Yamabe Invariant of a smooth compact manifold is by definition the supremum of the scalar curvatures of unit-volume Yamabe metrics on the manifold. For an explicit infinite class of 4-manifolds, we show that this invariant is positive but strictly less than that of the 4-sphere. This is done by using spin^c Dirac operators to control the lowest eigenvalue of a perturbation of the Yamabe Laplacian. These results dovetail perfectly with those derived from the perturbed Seiberg-Witten equations, but the present method is much more elementary in spirit.

Abstract:We study the simultaneous filling and embedding problem for a CR family of compact strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds of dimension at least 5. We also derive, as a consequence, the normality of the Stein fibers of the filled-in Stein space under the constant dimensionality assumption of the first Kohn-Rossi cohomology group of the fiber CR manifolds. Two main ingredients for our approach are the work of Catlin on the solution of the ∂-equation with mixed boundary conditions and the work of Siu and Ling on the study of the Grauert direct image theory for a (1,1)-convex-concave family of complex spaces.

Abstract:In this article, we consider a complete, non-compact almost Hermitian manifold whose curvature is asymptotic to that of the complex hyperbolic plane. Under natural geometric conditions, we show that such a manifold arises as the interior of a compact almost complex manifold whose boundary is a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold. Moreover, the geometric structure of the boundary can be recovered by analysing the expansion of the metric near infinity.

Abstract:A contact Riemannian manifold, whose complex structure is not necessarily integrable, is the generalization of the notion of a pseudohermitian manifold in CR geometry. The Tanaka–Webster–Tanno connection plays the role of the Tanaka–Webster connection for a pseudohermitian manifold. Conformal transformations and the Yamabe problem are also defined naturally in this setting. By using special frames and normal coordinates on a contact Riemannian manifold, we prove that if the complex structure is not integrable, the Yamabe invariant on a contact Riemannian manifold is always less than the Yamabe invariant of the Heisenberg group. So the Yamabe problem on a contact Riemannian manifold is always solvable.

Abstract:We show that the vanishing of the higher dimensional homology groups of a manifold ensures that every almost CR structure of codimension $k$ may be homotoped to a CR structure. This result is proved by adapting a method due to Haefliger used to study foliations (and previously applied to study the relation between almost complex and complex structures on manifolds) to the case of (almost) CR structures on open manifolds.

Abstract:We study the minimality of an isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold into a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold M endowed with the Webster metric hence consider a version of the CR Yamabe problem for CR manifolds with boundary. This occurs as the Yamabe problem for the Fefferman metric (a Lorentzian metric associated to a choice of contact structure θ on M , [20]) on the total space of the canonical circle bundle S 1 →C(M) → π M (a manifold with boundary ∂C(M)= π −1 (∂M) and is shown to be a nonlinear subelliptic problem of variational origin. For any real surface N={φ=0}⊂ H 1 we show that the mean curvature vector of N⇀ H 1 is expressed by H=− 1 2 ∑ j=1 2 X j (|Xφ | −1 X j φ)ξ provided that N is tangent to the characteristic direction T of ( H 1 , θ 0 ) , thus demonstrating the relationship between the classical theory of submanifolds in Riemannian manifolds (cf. e.g.[7]) and the newer investigations in [1], [6], [8] and [16]. Given an isometric immersion Ψ:N→ H n of a Riemannian manifold into the Heisenberg group we show that ΔΨ=2J T ⊥ hence start a Weierstrass representation theory for minimal surfaces in H n .

Abstract:Let (Xn,g+) (n≥3) be a Poincaré–Einstein manifold which is C3,α conformally compact with conformal infinity (∂X,[gˆ]). On the conformal compactification (X‾,g¯=ρ2g+) via a boundary defining function ρ, there are two types of Yamabe constants: Y(X‾,∂X,[g¯]) and Q(X‾,∂X,[g¯]). (See definitions (1) and (2).) In [13], Gursky and Han obtained an inequality between Y(X‾,∂X,[g¯]) and Y(∂X,[gˆ]). In this paper, we first show that the equality holds in Gursky–Han's inequality if and only if (Xn,g+) is isometric to the standard hyperbolic space (Hn,gH). Secondly, we derive a conformal invariant inequality between Q(X‾,∂X,[g¯]) and Y(∂X,[gˆ]), and show the equality holds if and only if (Xn,g+) is isometric to (Hn,gH). Based on this, we give a simple proof of the rigidity theorem for Poincaré–Einstein manifolds with conformal infinity being conformally equivalent to the standard sphere.

Abstract:The structure of the history phase space $\cal G$ of a covariant field system and its history group (in the sense of Isham and Linden) is analyzed on an example of a bosonic string. The history space $\cal G$ includes the time map $\sf T$ from the spacetime manifold (the two-sheet) $\cal Y$ to a one-dimensional time manifold $\cal T$ as one of its configuration variables. A canonical history action is posited on $\cal G$ such that its restriction to the configuration history space yields the familiar Polyakov action. The standard Dirac-ADM action is shown to be identical with the canonical history action, the only difference being that the underlying action is expressed in two different coordinate charts on $\cal G$. The canonical history action encompasses all individual Dirac-ADM actions corresponding to different choices $\sf T$ of foliating $\cal Y$. The history Poisson brackets of spacetime fields on $\cal G$ induce the ordinary Poisson brackets of spatial fields in the instantaneous phase space ${\cal G}_{0}$ of the Dirac-ADM formalism. The canonical history action is manifestly invariant both under spacetime diffeomorphisms Diff$\cal Y$ and temporal diffeomorphisms Diff$\cal T$. Both of these diffeomorphisms are explicitly represented by symplectomorphisms on the history phase space $\cal G$. The resulting classical history phase space formalism is offered as a starting point for projection operator quantization and consistent histories interpretation of the bosonic string model.
