Abstract:We present a short proof of Reisner's Theorem, characterizing which simplicial complexes have a Cohen-Macaulay face ring. In some cases, we can also express some homological invariants of the face ring in terms of the reduced homology of the complex.

Abstract:We investigate Cohen-Macaulay representations of quotient singularities $R:=l[[x_1,\cdots,x_d]]^G$ where $l$ is a field and $G$ is a finite group acting on $l[[x_1,\cdots,x_d]]$ as a ring, not necessarily as an $l$-algebra, with $|G|$ not divided by ${\rm char}\, l$. In fact, if we put $k:=l^G$, then we may assume that $G$ is a subgroup of $GL_d(l)\rtimes{\rm Gal}(l/k)$. We show that $R$ has a generator giving an NCCR and therefore when $d=2$, it is of finite Cohen-Macaulay type. Additionally, we completely describe its Auslander-Reiten quiver, which is often non-simply laced, as a quotient of a certain quiver. Moreover, we also prove that two-dimensional rings of finite Cohen-Macaulay type of equicharacteristic zero are precisely quotient singularities of this form, which generalizes Esnault and Auslander's result. Combining these results, we prove that the quivers that may arise as the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a two-dimensional Gorenstein ring of finite Cohen-Macaulay type of equicharacteristic zero are either doubles of extended Dynkin diagrams or ones having loops. To accomplish these, we establish two results which are of independent interest. First, we prove the existence of $(d-1)$-almost split sequences for arbitrary Cohen-Macaulay normal rings having NCCR which are not necessarily isolated singularities. Second, we make it possible to determine simple modules over skew group algebras by relating them to those over certain group algebras.

Abstract:We prove a duality theorem for Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complexes. This is a generalisation of Poincaré Duality, framed in the language of combinatorial sheaves. Our treatment is self-contained and accessible for readers with a working knowledge of simplicial complexes and (co)homology. The main motivation is a link with Bieri-Eckmann duality for discrete groups, which is explored in a companion paper.

Abstract:A simplicial complex $\Delta$ is a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex if its associated Stanley-Reisner ring $S$ has a virtual resolution, as defined by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, of length ${\rm codim}(S)$. We provide a sufficient condition on $\Delta$ to be a virtually Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex. We also introduce virtually shellable simplicial complexes, a generalization of shellable simplicial complexes. Virtually shellable complexes have the property that they are virtually Cohen-Macaulay, generalizing the well-known fact that shellable simplicial complexes are Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, $B$ a simplicial affine semigroup, and $C(B)$ the corresponding cone. We will present a decomposition of $K[B]$ into a direct sum of certain monomial ideals, which generalizes a construction by Hoa and St\"uckrad. We will use this decomposition to construct a semigroup $\tilde B$ with $B \subseteq \tilde B \subseteq C(B)$ such that $K[\tilde B]$ is Cohen-Macaulay with the property: $\tilde B \subseteq \hat B$ for every affine semigroup $\hat B$ with $B \subseteq \hat B \subseteq C(B)$ such that $K[\hat B]$ is Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:We prove that the f-vector of members in a certain class of meet semi-lattices satisfies Macaulay inequalities 0⩽∂k(fk)⩽fk−1 for all k⩾0. We construct a large family of meet semi-lattices belonging to this class, which includes all posets of multicomplexes, as well as meet semi-lattices with the “diamond property,” discussed by Wegner [G. Wegner, Kruskal–Katona's theorem in generalized complexes, in: Finite and Infinite Sets, vol. 2, in: Colloq. Math. Soc. János Bolyai, vol. 37, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1984, pp. 821–828], as special cases. Specializing the proof to the later family, one obtains the Kruskal–Katona inequalities and their proof as in [G. Wegner, Kruskal–Katona's theorem in generalized complexes, in: Finite and Infinite Sets, vol. 2, in: Colloq. Math. Soc. János Bolyai, vol. 37, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1984, pp. 821–828].For geometric meet semi-lattices we construct an analogue of the exterior face ring, generalizing the classic construction for simplicial complexes. For a more general class, which also includes multicomplexes, we construct an analogue of the Stanley–Reisner ring. These two constructions provide algebraic counterparts (and thus also algebraic proofs) of Kruskal–Katona's and Macaulay's inequalities for these classes, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

Abstract:We examine virtual resolutions of Stanley-Reisner ideals for a product of projective spaces. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for a simplicial complex to be virtually Cohen-Macaulay (to have a virtual resolution with length equal to its codimension). We also show that all balanced simplicial complexes are virtually Cohen-Macaulay.

Abstract:We present short proofs of two Tverberg-type theorems for cell complexes by S. Hasui, D. Kishimoto, M. Takeda, and M. Tsutaya. One of them states that for any prime power $r$, any simplicial sphere $X$ of dimension $(d+1)(r-1)-1$, and any continuous map $f:X\to\mathbb R^d$ there are pairwise disjoint faces $\sigma_1,\ldots,\sigma_r$ of $X$ such that $f(\sigma_1)\cap\ldots f(\sigma_r)\ne\emptyset$.

The simplicial complex of Brauer pairs of a finite reductive group

Abstract:In this paper we study the simplicial complex induced by the poset of Brauer pairs ordered by inclusion for the family of finite reductive groups. In the defining characteristic case, the homotopy type of this simplicial complex coincides with that of the Tits building thanks to a well-known result of Quillen. On the other hand, in the non-defining characteristic case, we show that the simplicial complex of Brauer pairs is homotopy equivalent to a simplicial complex determined by generalised Harish-Chandra theory. This extends earlier results of the author on the Brown complex and makes use of the theory of connected subpairs and twisted block induction developed by Cabanes and Enguehard.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group, and let chi be a character of a reductive subgroup H of G. We construct chi-invariant linear functionals on certain cohomologically induced representations of G, and we show that these linear functionals do not vanish on the bottom layers. Applying this construction, we prove two Archimedean nonvanishing hypotheses which are vital to the arithmetic study of special values of certain L-functions via modular symbols.

Abstract:We study properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes with isolated singularities modulo two generic linear forms. Miller, Novik, and Swartz proved that if a complex has homologically isolated singularities, then its Stanley-Reisner ring modulo one generic linear form is Buchsbaum. Here we examine the case of non-homologically isolated singularities, providing many examples in which the Stanley-Reisner ring modulo two generic linear forms is a quasi-Buchsbaum but not Buchsbaum ring.

Lefschetz properties of squarefree monomial ideals via Rees algebras

Abstract:The theory of Rees algebras of monomial ideals has been extensively studied, and as a consequence, many (sometimes partial) equivalences between algebraic properties of monomial ideals, and combinatorial properties of simplicial complexes and hypergraphs are known. In this paper we show how this theory can be used to find interesting examples in the theory of Lefschetz properties. We explore the consequences of known results from Lefschetz properties to the Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals, for example in the calculation of analytic spread. In particular, we show a connection between symbolic powers and $f$-vectors of simplicial complexes. This perspective leads us to a generalization of Postnikov's "mixed Eulerian numbers". We prove the positivity of such numbers in our setting.

Abstract:We explain how Cohen--Macaulay classifying spaces are ubiquitous among discrete groups that satisfy Bieri--Eckmann duality, and compare Bieri--Eckmann duality to duality results for Cohen--Macaulay complexes. We use this comparison to give a description of the dualizing module of ${\rm{Out}}(F_N)$ in terms of the local cohomology cosheaf of the spine of Outer space.

Abstract:We study the equivariant Hilbert series of the complex Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex $\Sigma$ under the action of a finite group via simplicial automorphisms. We prove that, when $\Sigma$ is Cohen-Macaulay and the group action is translative, i.e., color-preserving for some proper coloring of $\Sigma$, the equivariant Hilbert series of $\Sigma$ admits a rational expression whose numerator is a positive integer combination of irreducible characters. We relate such a result to equivariant Ehrhart theory via an equivariant analogue of the Betke-McMullen theorem developed by Jochemko, Katthän and Reiner: namely, if a lattice polytope admits a lattice unimodular triangulation that is invariant under the action of a finite group, then the equivariant Ehrhart series of the polytope equals the equivariant Hilbert series of such a triangulation. As an application, we study the equivariant Ehrhart series of alcoved polytopes in the sense of Lam and Postnikov and derive explicit results in the case of order polytopes and of Lipschitz poset polytopes.

We discuss various results on the Macaulayfication functor, reflexive modules over simple, quotient and minimally elliptic singularities, geometric and algebraic McKay Correspondence. Finally, we describe matrix factorizations corresponding to the indecomposable Cohen-Macaulay modules over the non-isolated singularities $A_\infty$ and $D_\infty$.

Abstract:By Auslander's algebraic McKay correspondence, the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a simple singularity is equivalent to the $1$-cluster category of the path algebra of a Dynkin quiver (i.e. the orbit category of the derived category by the action of the Auslander-Reiten translation). In this paper we give a systematic method to construct a similar type of triangle equivalence between the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein isolated singularity $R$ and the generalized (higher) cluster category of a finite dimensional algebra $\Lambda$. The key role is played by a bimodule Calabi-Yau algebra, which is the higher Auslander algebra of $R$ as well as the higher preprojective algebra of an extension of $\Lambda$. As a byproduct, we give a triangle equivalence between the stable category of graded Cohen-Macaulay $R$-modules and the derived category of $\Lambda$. Our main results apply in particular to a class of cyclic quotient singularities and to certain toric affine threefolds associated with dimer models.

Abstract:Let $\Delta$ be a pure simplicial complex on $n$ vertices having dimension $d$ and codimension $c = n-d-1$ in the simplex. Terai and Yoshida proved that if the number of facets of $\Delta$ is at least $\binom{n}{c}-2c+1$, then $\Delta$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We improve this result by showing that these hypotheses imply the stronger condition that $\Delta$ is vertex decomposable. We give examples to show that this bound is optimal, and that the conclusion cannot be strengthened to the class of matroids or shifted complexes. We explore an application to Simon's Conjecture and discuss connections to other results from the literature.
