Abstract:The applicability of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of anguillicolosis in feral eels was examined using a crude antigen preparation from the body wall of adult Anguillicola crassus. The screening consisted of samples from 100 feral European eels Anguilla anguilla. As a reference the actual status of infection was determined by dissection of the eels' swim-bladders. The ELISA results were compared with a background value calculated from the results obtained from 43 non-infected farm eels. The screened samples had a high prevalence of A. crassus (83 %); however, the specificity and the negative predictive value of the ELISA were low compared to the high positive predictive value. Nonetheless, the reproducibility (precision) of the test was satisfactory, and for the non-infected reference group specificity was 97.7 %. Although the ELISA, as used in the present study, is not applicable for diagnostic purposes, it represents a useful tool for the investigation of the specific humoral immune response of eels against A. crassus under controlled experimental conditions. Immunoblots using crude antigen preparations from different parts of adult A. crassus as well as a crude somatic third-stage (L3) antigen preparation illustrated that only antigens associated with the body wall of adult A. crassus are potentially suitable for diagnostic purposes. Despite the fact that antibodies against Raphidascaris acus cross-reacted with 3 body wall antigens of A. crassus, the most encouraging results were obtained with the antigen preparation from the outer cuticle of adult A. crassus which yielded a conspicuous, broad band at about 100 kDa.
European eel (Anguilla anguilla) survival modeling based on a 22-year capture-mark-recapture survey of a Mediterranean subpopulation

Abstract:Since the 1980s, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has declined by over 90% in recruitment across its European and North African distribution area. This diadromous fish spawns at sea and migrates into continental waters, where it grows for three to more than 30 years, depending on habitat conditions and location. During their growth, different habitat use tactics can locally influence the life-history traits of eels, including their survival rates. Thus, the spatio-temporal dimension of this species is crucial for management. Based on a rare Mediterranean long-term survey of more than 20 years (2001-2022) in an artificial drainage canal connected to a vast brackish lagoon (the Vaccarès lagoon), we aimed to study the dynamics of one subpopulation's life-history traits. We used Bayesian multistate capture-mark-recapture (CMR) models to assess the temporal variability in survival and abundance at both seasonal and inter-annual scales, considering life-stage structure. High survival rates and low detection probabilities were found for the undifferentiated and female yellow stages. In contrast, female silver eels exhibited lower survival rates and higher capture probabilities. Estimating detection probabilities and survival rates enabled accurate assessment of relative abundance across different life stages and time periods. Our findings indicated a substantial decrease in the abundance of undifferentiated and female yellow eels in the early 2000s, whereas the abundance of female silver eels remained consistently low yet stable throughout the study period. Considering the life stage seemed essential to study the dynamics of the eel during its continental growing period. The present results will provide key elements to propose and implement suitable sustainable environmental management strategies for eel conservation.

Abstract:In recent decades, the population of European eel Anguilla anguilla has strongly declined and the stock is outside safe biological limits. Freshwater habitat degradation has been cited as a key causal factor in the European eel decline, but there are limited studies assessing the responses of this species to river habitat restoration efforts. This study utilized mark-and-recapture data from annual electrofishing surveys conducted between 2009 and 2014 to describe European eel population density and size structure (length, weight) in the River Glaven − a chalk stream in eastern England. Short-term effects of river restoration on European eel were assessed via a Before-After-Control-Impact experimental design. Of the recaptured individuals, 73% were sedentary and the rest mobile. Despite re-meandering work increasing habitat heterogeneity in the restoration reach relative to the control reach, no change in European eel density or size structure was detected across treatments and time. While length and weight increased in the downstream control reach over the study period, density declined. This can be attributed to various local stressors such as barriers to European eel migration, as well as broader range-scale causes including climatic and oceanic factors. Although further research is ideally necessary to ensure adequate sample sizes, as well as to provide long-term monitoring of eel responses to river restoration, this study emphasizes the need for whole-catchment efforts in European eel conservation that combine river–floodplain restoration with greatly improved fish passage.

Silvering process of female European eel in the north Adriatic: Who is really ready to migrate?

Abstract:During the 1970s and 2010, the population of Anguilla anguilla declined significantly, and the species is now classified as a critically endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Considering its social, economic, and ecological importance, it is necessary to understand the biological mechanism that controls population dynamics, in particular the passage from the resident phase to the migratory phase. During this phase of their life cycle, the environment plays a key role in the maturation of the spawners which will eventually undertake a long spawning migration to the Sargasso Sea. An assessment of the morphological characteristics of eels during their silvering process and reproductive activity was conducted by collecting 1513 female eels from seven lagoons in the North Adriatic Sea. Morphometric analyses show that eels classified as pre-migratory according to the Silver Index are histologically (65% of eels with oocytes in the most advanced stage of development) and morphologically ready to migrate. Accordingly, pre-migrant eels treated with hormone induction performed similarly to migrant eels. They mated and spawned spontaneously in the tank with a percentage of 81.0%, and 88.2% of them produced viable eggs. The results showed how the North Adriatic lagoons could present favourable conditions that permit the fast development of females with high reproductive potential. This data can be used to develop successful strategies to conserve and manage eel populations.

Abstract:Life-history traits of eels display a high level of phenotypic plasticity in response to large-scale biogeographical drivers, as well as local conditions encountered during the continental phase. Here, we provided a biogeographical snapshot of the variability of life-history traits of eels ( Anguilla anguilla ), across a large proportion of their natural distribution range. Silver eels ( n = 99) were collected across eleven European catchments to investigate how life-history traits vary along geographical and saline habitats, as it was inferred from the Sr:Ca ratio in otoliths. Among 13 life-history traits tested, 3 of them such as total length, body or liver weight were related to geographical coordinates. Overall, eels grow faster in southern Europe and migrate earlier suggesting that the silvering process is related to the local growth conditions more than fish age. The salinity profiles revealed by the otoliths' Sr:Ca ratios indicate that eels with a brackish life-history generally grow faster, reach larger size-at-age, and have a better condition than eels living in freshwater. This observation associated with the lower abundance of the sanguivorous swimbladder nematode, Anguillicola crassus , confirms the importance of brackish areas for sustaining the eel production. A large proportion of the observed variation of life-history traits remained unexplained by the biogeographical trends and salinity condition, which suggests that other drivers act at the catchment scale.

Freshwater and coastal migration patterns in the silver-stage eel Anguilla anguilla

Abstract:The unimpeded downstream movement patterns and migration success of small female and male Anguilla anguilla through a catchment in north-west Europe were studied using an acoustic hydrophone array along the River Finn and into the Foyle Estuary in Ireland. Twenty silver-stage A. anguilla (total length, LT , range: 332-520 mm) were trapped 152 km upstream from a coastal marine sea-lough outlet and internally tagged with acoustic transmitters of which 19 initiated downstream migration. Migration speed was highly influenced by river flow within the freshwater (FW) compartment. Anguilla anguilla activity patterns were correlated with environmental influences; light, tidal direction and lunar phase all influenced the initiation of migration of tagged individuals. Migration speed varied significantly between upstream and lower river compartments. Individuals migrated at a slower speed in transitional water and sea-lough compartments compared with the FW compartment. While 88·5% survival was recorded during migration through the upper 121 km of the river and estuary, only 26% of A. anguilla which initiated downstream migration were detected at the outermost end of the acoustic array. Telemetry equipment functioned efficiently, including in the sea-lough, so this suggests high levels of mortality during sea-lough migration, or less likely, long-term sea-lough residence by silver A. anguilla emigrants. This has important implications for eel management plans.
Searching for the critically endangered European eel in oceanic islands: A pioneer study in the freshwater systems of Madeira, Macaronesia

Abstract:Abstract The globally threatened European eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) is the only freshwater fish native to Macaronesia. Despite being a keystone species to freshwater habitats, little is known about its population, environmental associations and conservation requirements in oceanic islands. The density and geographical‐related factors influencing the distribution of A. anguilla in the subtropical Archipelago of Madeira (Portugal) were examined. Data on the species occurrence was initially collected using an online survey addressed to citizens. Eels were then sampled through electrofishing in 31 sampling sites along 11 streams on Madeira Island, and eel‐habitat associations were investigated using LMMs and GLMMs. One stream was also sampled in Porto Santo Island. The presence of A. anguilla was confirmed in the two islands of the archipelago with streams (Madeira and Porto Santo). Eels are distributed throughout Madeira Island, being more abundant – particularly small size individual– at lower altitudes (mostly below 150 m). The number of weirs was an important predictor of eel density, suggesting that these flood‐control structures limit their upstream migration. This study represents a pioneer sampling effort of the European eel in Madeira and results provide much‐needed baseline information on the species distribution and related environmental factors in oceanic islands. While most eel research has historically focused on mainland habitats where dams pose a significant threat to eel habitats, our study underscores the critical importance of addressing smaller, often overlooked barriers that may also cause habitat fragmentation. The European eel is a panmictic species, thus, the conservation of the Macaronesian subpopulations can have substantial benefits for its global recovery. A comprehensive investigation of the impact of man‐made obstacles on eel habitat is still needed. Similarly, other common threats such as interactions with non‐indigenous species and infection by Anguillicola crassus should be a research priority in future studies.

Abstract:Technological advances in tracking methods enable the mapping of anguillid eel migration routes from continental habitats to their spawning sites in the ocean. However, the behaviour and orientation abilities of anguillids are still poorly understood, and have only rarely been studied on the continental shelf. Here we present the results of a study into the vertical and horizontal movement behaviour of 42 European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) tagged with electronic tags that migrated through the North Sea and English Channel towards and into the Atlantic Ocean during their spawning migration. We used actograms, periodograms and linear mixed effects models to determine the periodicity and significance of the timing and pattern of vertical movement and activity. Overall, eels had a complex behavioural repertoire that included classical diel vertical migration (DVM), reverse DVM and vertical movement behaviours that synchronized with tidal patterns. All of the eels that were tracked showed one or more of these behaviours during their time at liberty, and many exhibited all of them. We also observed that the eels had a higher horizontal migration speed when the current in the favourable direction was stronger. This, together with the vertical movement synchronized with the tides, suggests the eels adopt selective tidal stream transport. Finally, tracked eels had a higher vertical movement range at night compared to daytime. We hypothesize that these behaviours are driven by bio-energetic efficient movement, navigation and predator avoidance.

Abstract:Abstract The European eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) is critically endangered (according to the most recent IUCN assessment) and has suffered a 95% decline in recruitment since the 1980s, attributed in part to factors occurring during the marine phases of its life-cycle. As an adult, the European eel undertakes the longest spawning migration of all anguillid eels, a distance of 5000 to 10,000 km across the Atlantic Ocean to the Sargasso Sea. However, despite the passage of almost 100 years since Johannes Schmidt proposed the Sargasso Sea as the breeding place of European eels on the basis of larval surveys, no eggs or spawning adults have ever been sampled there to confirm this. Fundamental questions therefore remain about the oceanic migration of adult eels, including navigation mechanisms, the routes taken, timings of arrival, swimming speed and spawning locations. We attached satellite tags to 26 eels from rivers in the Azores archipelago and tracked them for periods between 40 and 366 days at speeds between 3 and 12 km day −1 , and provide the first direct evidence of adult European eels reaching their presumed breeding place in the Sargasso Sea.
What Goes Wrong during Early Development of Artificially Reproduced European Eel Anguilla anguilla? Clues from the Larval Transcriptome and Gene Expression Patterns

Abstract:In eels, large variations in larval mortality exist, which would impede the viable production of juvenile glass eels in captivity. The transcriptome of European eel larvae was investigated to identify physiological pathways and genes that show differential regulation between non-viable vs. viable larvae. Expression of genes involved in inflammation and host protection was higher, suggesting that non-viable larvae suffered from microbial infection. Expression of genes involved in osmoregulation was also higher, implying that non-viable larvae tried to maintain homeostasis by strong osmoregulatory adaptation. Expression of genes involved in myogenesis, neural, and sensory development was reduced in the non-viable larvae. Expression of the major histocompatibility complex class-I (mhc1) gene, M-protein (myom2), the dopamine 2B receptor (d2br), the melatonin receptor (mtr1), and heat-shock protein beta-1 (hspb1) showed strong differential regulation and was therefore studied in 1, 8, and 15 days post-hatch (dph) larvae by RT-PCR to comprehend the roles of these genes during ontogeny. Expression patterning of these genes indicated the start of active swimming (8 dph) and feed searching behavior (15 dph) and confirmed immunocompetence immediately after hatching. This study revealed useful insights for improving larval survival by microbial control and salinity reduction.
The Composition and Structure of the Intestinal Microflora of Anguilla Marmorata at Different Growth Rates: a Deep Sequencing Study.

Abstract:AIMS:The aim of this study was to determine the intestinal microflora of Anguilla marmorata at different growth rates and to identify potential probiotic/pernicious bacteria.METHODS AND RESULTS:Bacterial communities from eight different eels' intestinal sites (including the intestinal contents and the intestinal mucosa) from three fish groups (three fast-, two medium-, and three stunted-growth samples), two water samples, and one diet sample were characterized by Illumina next-generation sequencing. The data revealed that the predominant genera (relative abundance of bacteria genera >1%) in the intestine of fast- and medium-growth groups were Cetobacterium, Edwardsiella, Clostridium, Lactococcus, Bacteroides, Plesiomonas and Akkermansia. The dominant genus in the stunted-growth group was Spiroplasma. Moreover, culture-associated (water and feed) environmental microbes were distinct from those present in fish intestines, and included Flavobacterium (the dominant bacteria in water) and Corynebacterium (the dominant bacteria in feed).CONCLUSIONS:Only minor differences in gut microbial communities were observed between the fast-growth group and the medium-growth group; however, significant differences were observed between the normal-growth group (including the fast-growth group and medium-growth group, which showed uninhibited growth during the rearing stage) and the stunted-growth group. Together, these data suggested that intestinal microbes were significantly associated with marbled eels' growth rate.SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY:In this study, we demonstrated for the first time, the intestinal bacterial communities of A. marmorata at different growth rates. Moreover, we found that the genus Spiroplasma was abundant in the guts of stunted-growth eels, which had never been noticed. Such a finding indicates that the genus Spiroplasma plays a key role associated with retardation in growth and should be controlled to recover the growth of stunted eels, which is meaningful to farmers.
First Assessment of Prebiotics, Probiotics, and Synbiotics Affecting Survival, Growth, and Gene Expression of European Eel (Anguilla anguilla) Larvae

Abstract:European eel, Anguilla anguilla, larval culture faces a bottleneck during the transition to exogenous feeding. To stimulate gut-priming, in the present study, prebiotics (AgriMOS, mannan-oligosaccharides, and β-(1,3 and 1,6)-poly-D-glucose), probiotics (Bactocell, Pediococcus acidilactici), and synbiotics (AgriMOS + Bactocell) were administered to European eel larvae during the endogenous prefeeding stage. Eel larvae were reared in 2 L incubators with an initial stocking density of ∼200 larvae/L. Each treatment (pre-, pro-, synbiotics, and control), represented by 3 replicated incubators, was connected to a separate recirculating aquaculture system. The gut-priming agents were introduced directly into the rearing water. Results revealed increased mortality when larvae were introduced to synbiotics and impaired growth in connection to probiotics and synbiotics. Larvae receiving prebiotics showed similar survival and growth to larvae reared without gut-priming agents. The immune gene expression revealed a lag phase between maternally inherited protection (c3, igm, and il10) and the gradual buildup of the larvae’s own immune system (il1β, irf7). The lack of treatment-related immune (c3, igm, il10, il1β, and irf7) and stress/repair (hsp70, hsp90) responses revealed an immature immuno-readiness. Digestion (try, ctra, ctrb, tgl, and amyl), food intake (cck), and appetite (ghrl)-related genes were expressed at basal levels already on 4 days post-hatch, which combined with phenotypic plasticity of the appetite-regulating ghrelin (ghrl), indicated a prospective adaptive capability towards earlier maturation of the larval digestive capacity. Overall, we contemplate that the application of gut-priming agents in water has merit; however, as no beneficial effect was observed, we conclude that the regimen applied is not recommendable in the present form and needs to be customized for future eel larval culture. As such, water management strategies and rearing options need to be further explored to establish prefeeding and feeding regimens, targeting optimized culture conditions, and the production of healthy eel offspring.

Biology and Ecology of the European Eel as Revealed by an Original Sampling Technique Performed in a Deep and Large Riverine Ecosystem

Abstract:Few studies have documented the biology, demography, and ecology of eels in deep and large riverine ecosystems, which nevertheless contain important growing areas for this endangered species. Using an original eel sampling technique, this 6-year study, started in 2018, aims to characterise the bioecology and demography parameters of eels in a deep and wide riverine ecosystem, the Meuse in Belgium. It was performed over a 125.8 km stretch and included four sampling sites. This technique, never previously used in the Meuse, trapped the eels in fyke nets when they swam back upstream, swimming against the current, after an avoidance reaction generated by the screens of hydropower facilities. Results revealed a high performance in catching eels as well as their sympatric biodiversity. The inter-site growth of eels was good. Yellow eels were mostly caught in the spring and summer under the influence of rising water temperatures, and silver eels were caught during autumn in October–December when flow and turbidity were high. A down-to-upstream decreasing demographic gradient was observed, but this pattern was not found for entry rate, catchability, survival, and immigration and emigration nets. Survival was low, and net emigration was high at a site experiencing noise pollution and hydraulic disturbance due to the work of expanding the ship lock to facilitate the passage of large boats. Effective strategies for the local eel stock and habitat management have been provided for deep and large riverine ecosystems.

Three-dimensional migratory behaviour of European silver eels (Anguilla anguilla) approaching a hydropower plant

Abstract:The global population of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is rapidly declining, and migration barriers in rivers are believed to be one of several key causes. While progress has been made in the development of bypass solutions, they are often constructed based on a limited knowledge of swimming behaviour. A bypass close to the stream bed is often recommended at fish passage facilities to accommodate downstream eel migration. The results of this recommendation are poorly studied, and the few studies that exist show varying bypass efficiencies. The current study used acoustic telemetry with depth sensors to explore the three-dimensional migratory behaviour of downstream-migrating silver eels. The eels were tracked as they approached a hydropower plant with a state-of-the-art angled bar rack and full-depth bypass. Downstream and upstream swimming differed in preferred vertical and lateral positions. During periods of local downstream movement, the density of observations was largest in the upper middle section, away from the river boundaries and in higher velocities. Conversely, when moving upstream, eels tended to avoid the upper layers of the middle part of the river, swimming closer to the riverbed and using the bank areas to a greater extent. Downstream-moving fish swam higher in the water column during night and in turbid conditions (high discharge). When approaching the impassable bar rack and the full-depth bypass, the eels searched most intensely but not exclusively along the bottom third of the rack, often exploring at new depths after changing direction. The impediment passage efficiency was 100% when both bypass solutions were considered. The study provides knowledge of the swimming behaviour of silver eels, which is relevant for the design of bypass solutions for eels at migration barriers.

Abstract:The humoral immune response in the two eel species, Anguilla japonica and Anguilla anguilla against two fractions of antigens in Anguillicola crassus were studied.Within species, both eel species showed significantly elevated titres compared with controls when immunized with antigens from Anguillicola crassus.In interspecific comparison, Anguilla japonicashowed significantly elevated titres in comparison with Anguilla anguilla. Immunization of Anguilla anguillacaused a significantly decrease in the plasma levels of protein in comparison with control fish and all groups of Anguilla japonica. In contrast, Anguilla japonica showed significantly lower plasma levels of Ig in all groups compared with Anguilla anguilla.The different susceptibilities to Anguillicola crassus between the natural host, Anguilla japonica, and the naı ̈ve, Anguilla anguilla, is partly due to differences in the ability of the two eel species to mount a humoral immune response.

Abstract:Anguillid freshwater eels show remarkable life histories. In the Atlantic, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and American eel (Anguilla rostrata) undertake extensive migrations to spawn in the oceanic Sargasso Sea, and subsequently the offspring drift to foraging areas in Europe and North America, first as leaf-like leptocephali larvae that later metamorphose into glass eels. Since recruitment of European and American glass eels has declined drastically during past decades, there is a strong demand for further understanding of the early, oceanic phase of their life cycle. Consequently, during a field expedition to the eel spawning sites in the Sargasso Sea, we carried out a wide range of dedicated bio-physical studies across areas of eel larval distribution. Our findings suggest a key role of oceanic frontal processes, retaining eel larvae within a zone of enhanced feeding conditions and steering their drift. The majority of the more westerly distributed American eel larvae are likely to follow a westerly/northerly drift route entrained in the Antilles/Florida Currents. European eel larvae are generally believed to initially follow the same route, but their more easterly distribution close to the eastward flowing Subtropical Counter Current indicates that these larvae could follow a shorter, eastward route towards the Azores and Europe. The findings emphasize the significance of oceanic physical-biological linkages in the life-cycle completion of Atlantic eels.
Development and characterization of a continuous cell line (EL) from the liver of European eel Anguilla anguilla

Abstract:In the present study, a new hepatic tissue‐origin cell line from European eel Anguilla anguilla has been developed and characterized. This cell line designated EL has been maintained in Leibovitz L‐15 supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum over 72 months, and subcultured more than 90 times. The EL cell line consisted predominantly of fibroblast‐like cells, which could survive over 100 days in vitro, and could grow at 15‐32°C. The optimum temperature for growth was 27°C. The chromosome analysis revealed a modal diploid karyotype of 2n = 38. The origin of this cell line was confirmed by the 18s recombinant (r)RNA sequencing. The susceptibility test indicated significant cytopathic effects in the EL cells with regard to the Rana grylio virus and the Herpesvirus Anguillae. Viral replication was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and PCR analysis. Following poly (I: C) exposure, the expression levels of the immune‐related molecules interferon regulatory factor‐7 (irf7) and transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β) were downregulated in EL cells, whereas the expression levels of the interferon regulatory factor‐3(irf3) and the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) were upregulated. All four genes were significantly upregulated following inflammation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). These data suggested the application of EL cell line for viral identification, as well as for immunodiagnosis and pharmacological targeting.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Diadromous fish such as the European eel ( Anguilla anguilla L.) are hampered by a high density of barriers in estuaries and freshwater systems. Modified and fragmented waterbodies lack tidal flows, and habitat may be less accessible and underutilized compared to free-flowing rivers and estuaries. With rising sea levels and increased occurrence of droughts, the number of barriers may further increase, implying that the need to study migration in such areas may even become more urgent worldwide. To study glass eel migration and behaviour in such highly modified water systems, a mark-recapture study was carried out in the North Sea Canal (NSC) basin, which drains into the North Sea via a large sluice complex. In total, eight uniquely tagged groups (3,797 glass eels) were released near the sluice complex, and 11 groups (2,663 glass eels) were released at inland barriers upstream over a 28 km long stretch in the NSC in spring 2018. The sluice complex attracted 10.3 million glass eel and did not block or delay their immigration. The large and diurnally intensively used coastal ship locks and allowings some saltwater intrusion, efficiently facilitated glass eel migration. Once in the NSC, water outlets from adjacent polders attracted glass eels relative proportional to the discharge of pumping stations. In the NSC, average migration speeds of 0.7 km/day (max. 1.8 km/day) were measured, and this increased with higher temperatures. Redistribution of glass eel from accumulations at inland barriers to other outlet locations was observed in both upstream and downstream directions in the NSC. Passage success and residence time ('delays' of 4.1–13.7 days) varied between the different inland barriers. Most of the glass eel, however, appears to settle in the easily accessible habitats within the brackish NSC catchment. This study combined an integral assessment of successive bottlenecks in a modified inland water system.

Abstract:Aberrations in the otolith can harmfully influence the imperative actions of the fish species. The chief drive of the current investigation is to describe the deformities in the otoliths of the European eel Anguilla anguilla. Out of 76 Anguilla anguilla individuals collected from Bafa Lake in Western Anatolia, Türkiye, four female specimens exhibited abnormal otoliths. Scanning electron microscope was used to determine the deformed otoliths examined. The outcomes of the abnormality analyses in A. anguilla otoliths, deformities were noticed such as numerous prominence structures and bumps of different sizes on the surface of the otolith produced by buildup of the different crystal structures in some parts of the otolith. These deformities were found in the left and/or right otoliths of the female individuals of different total lengths. The percentage of individuals with abnormal otoliths of A. anguilla is calculated as 5.3%. The current study presents for the first‐time abnormal otolith information on left and right otoliths in female A. anguilla. Deformities in the otoliths of European eels are believed to result from a combination of genetic predisposition and stress caused by various environmental factors, such as water pollution, changes in salinity, temperature fluctuations and nutritional imbalances.
