Abstract:Chinese art history has changed the closed painting history into the international art tide since the 20th century as we can see from the cases of Chinese art history,such as Chen Shizeng and Pan Tianshou's The History of China Painting influenced by Japanese art historians in 1920s,Li Puyuan's An Introduction to the History of Chinese Art and Teng Gu's History of the Tang and Song Painting influenced by the Western historical materialism in1930s,and the British scholar Ke Lige's Ming art research and the Chinese American scholars Fang Wen's Chinese art history studies in the late period of the 20th century.There are two primary paths as following: On the one hand,the theories and methods of the Japanese and the Western have profoundly impacted on the study of art history scholars in China;On the other hand,China's scholars like Fang Wen have created new research methods to respond to the challenge of Western art historians so as to promote the in-depth development of Chinese art history into the international world,which should be one of the countermeasures and directions of China art history research in the 21st century.
Art practices of the Chinese women diaspora: On cultural identity and gender modernity

Abstract:Since the early twentieth century, Chinese women artists have emigrated to other countries. Their works are influenced and shaped by diaspora experiences, which vary across time phases. However, the world history of diasporic women is often lost in the larger historical narrative. As such, women diaspora artists also remain an under-represented segment in art realms, both within and outside of China. This is a case study of three Chinese diaspora women artists ‐ Pan Yuliang, Shen Yuan and Pixy Liao. Their works reveal engagement in cultural identity as well as gender identity through an autobiographical approach. For cultural identity, dynamic interaction between the culture of the artist’s homeland and that of her host country play a vital role throughout their art practices. Rather than using elements of typical Chinese cultural heritage, women artists tend to engage in cultural emblems, which connect to their personal-gendered experiences. Albeit confronting the double otherness on cultural and gender identity in a foreign country, the experience of diaspora pushes women artists to pursue independence, self-awakening and broader world-views. With modern conceptions of gender, their practices, particularly the family-theme, convey reflections on the conventional ideology of the family, as well as traditional gender roles.

Abstract:During the period of the Republic of China, China was in the complex context of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Under the influence of Western women's educational thought, the artists of the Republic of China entered the modern context of the Republic of China as participants. In this article, the object of research is the "new women's painting" from 1912 to 1949. The study includes an analysis of painting practices and artistic concepts of new women artists in the Republic of China. Under the influence of internal and external factors, their participation in the modern transformation of traditional Chinese fine art and contribution to the development of new women's painting. The paper examines the formation of a new women's painting in the Republic of China from the standpoint of culture, sociology and education. Studying the background of the appearance of new women's paintings in the Republic of China, the artistic value and historical significance of new women's paintings in the Republic of China were discovered. It is demonstrated how new masters were born and developed in the clash of Chinese and Western art, new and traditional ideas and concepts. They freed themselves from the shackles of feudal female ideas and pursued an independent personality, rights and freedom. In art, he promotes the modern transformation of traditional painting with its unique emotional expression and fusion of Chinese and Western styles.

Abstract:The "Chinese fever" that has been sparked at international art exhibitions is the brilliance of the history of old shrines. The "5000 Year Civilization Exhibition of China" held by the Guggenheim Museum of Fine Arts only highlights the "ancient" and "modern" parts, canceling the "contemporary" part, in this way, it fully affirms the value of traditional culture. Therefore, avant-garde artistic creations after 1985 have all tended to destroy and subvert the spiritual value of cultural relics. The cultural relics that once symbolized power have been washed away from traditional values by artists, used as pure "materials" for expression, and extensively used as a consumable material, which to some extent aligns with the existing cognitive concepts of Western art consumers towards Chinese art. After recognizing and affirming traditional culture, Chinese female artists export works that are considered exotic, proficiently mastering the language barriers between transforming traditional culture and international aesthetics, no longer limited to graphic or decorative content. Its creation presents a chaotic state of mixed old and new, with a mixture of East and West, full of a strong vitality. They pursue a better material civilization life, break through the constraints of tradition on behavior, learn and master international ways of expression, achieve dual liberation of body and mind, and thus develop a comprehensive style. The renovation of traditional culture and the establishment of an international comprehensive style by artists are the ways for them to find uniqueness and entry in the many obstacles of "ism".

Abstract:The question of “why there have been no great women artists,” initiated by Linda Nochlin in 1971, elicits different responses from art domains in China. In addition, the notions of feminism or feminist art criticism, translated from English and practiced by Chinese artists, create distinct connotations reflective of different gender conditions. Zhu and Xiao, in their Feminisms with Chinese Characteristics, claim that “Chinese feminisms must remain plural because those concepts represent the changing practical consciousness in response to historical and social developments” (Zhu and Xiao, 2021: 1). Dai Jinhua, a Chinese scholar, views feminism as “the search for different worlds and alternative possibilities other than global capitalism” (Dai, 2002: 29). A historical overview of woman and art in China demonstrates a plurality of female and feminism, and this article shows how alternative responses to Nochlin’s question become possible if one views sexual difference and gender politics as a non-binary system in specific historical contexts.

Abstract:In comparison with the expression of feminist art during the second wave of the feminism movement in the United States, Chinese feminist art embodies similar development paths but with different pursuits. Immigrant countries determine that feminist art in the United States has different aims on account of artists of different races and nationalities, such as black women discussing racial discrimination and immigration; European immigrants criticize patriarchy from the perspective of Western art history; and LGBT people are oppressed by society. However, Chinese feminist art also has its own unique artistic expression objects and goals in the development and evolution of feminist theory. Aiming at the prevalent problem of preference for boys over girls and gender inequality, Chinese female artists criticize the hidden gender discrimination in society in a particular way.

Abstract:The author analyzes various aspects of the role of women in the society and culture of China of the late XX-early XXI centuries, a special place is occupied by the analysis of family relations, education and artistic creativity of women. The subject of the study is women, the transformation of their status in society and culture, in particular, in the modern pictorial art of China. It is emphasized that at the end of the XX century there is a reassessment of values, the motivation of young people in the family sphere changes, the traditional importance of the family is lost due to state regulation of family relations. Comparative historical and iconographic research methods based on culturological, philosophical and art-historical scientific materials were used. The relevance of the topic is due to the increased interest in Chinese culture and the changing attitude towards women in society and culture. The novelty of the study is an attempt to trace the impact of modernization on the status of Chinese women, taking into account the availability of higher education, gender imbalance in society and culture. It is concluded that obtaining higher education, career development, personal freedom, participation in business, in the socio-political and cultural life of society, becomes a priority for a woman, putting marriage and family values at risk. It is revealed that the negative influence of mass culture leads to the decline of morals, psychological disorders, social infantilism. In contemporary art, Chinese female artists use unconventional artistic techniques to express their "I" in painting, but innovative methods of self-expression are less recognized than those of male artists, as well as defending their point of view and philosophy. The intertwining of cultural heritage and modern values have shaped the path of development of Chinese women's art.

Abstract:In contemporary times, female art is gradually seen as an independent branch of art. Seal carving is a world intangible cultural heritage and an important part of Chinese art. Female seal-carving artists, against such a backdrop, are exhibiting their own charm with a tint of Chinese characteristics. This paper intends to give an outline of female seal carving in China and its development process. It then explores its artistic features with examples of contemporary female seal-carving artists, such as Luo Pengpeng and Yin Fenghua. In the end the problems confronting the female group will be discussed and their way out.

Abstract:It is well-known that social phenomena can be reflected in art. In the past research time, there have been some research results about the Dunhuang murals and gender equality, respectively. However, there is no such one as combining the two meaningful topics together and applying them in modern society. The aim of this study is to analyze the trend of murals painted in Dunhuang by comparing the characteristics in a different time, from the Beiliang Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty, and then compare the trend of feminization of the mural images with the changes in women's status during this 1000 years. After comparing and analyzing, the different, even contrary, results lead to deeper thoughts: from what perspective the women's status should be analyzed and described? Definitely, the four dimensions, including economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment, should not be ignored and must be treated seriously. That is meaningful for the research of Dunhuang Grottoes, the images painted in Dunhuang, the studies of ancient China, today’s gender inequality, and many other areas. It is confident that this article will fill academic gaps and provide a new idea to other researchers.

Abstract:Abstract References to native culture are frequently in the foreground of works by Chinese women artists. When they make contact with different cultures, although not necessarily connected with leaving their place of birth thanks to the transfer of information and cultural heritage that has developed extremely efficiently in the era of globalization (Gordon Mathews), they see their own entanglement in the cultural tradition. In the process of constructing their identity they try to find answers to the following question: which part of the cultural tradition is mine? Which one do I identify with? In the case of Chinese women artists, is it the legacy of literati ? Classic ink painting and calligraphy? Or perhaps women's crafts that bear no name? Or perhaps a mixture of inspirations? Such questions about material heritage might also be augmented by others that consider aspects of the immaterial heritage of China. This article explores how Chinese women artists such as Chen Qingqing, Qin Yufen, Shi Hui, Wang Xiaohui, Cheng Caroline, Lin Tianmiao, Zhang Yanzi, Man Fung-yi, Liu Liyun, Peng Wei, Chen Lingyang, Chen Qiulin, Zhang Ou and Liu Ren refer to their cultural tradition.

Abstract:The Central Academy of Fine Arts is the only higher education institution of fine arts under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. The history of the National Art School in Beiping dates back to the establishment of the National School of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1918, which was supported by the prominent pedagogue of art and its first director Cai Yuanpei. It was the first national school in the history of China, laid the foundation for the modern Chinese education in the field of fine arts. This article is dedicated to the analysis of the key events of more than a century-long history of the school, which allows tracings the evolution of the Chinese art education, and gives a better perspective on the role of modern China in the art world. The novelty of this work lies consists in description of the process of establishment of art education in China in the XX century, classification of the national traits of this period on the example of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, as well as analysis of the Soviet impact upon the Chinese education in the field of art history. The international cooperation with the Russian School of Painting, namely I. E. Repin Academy of Fine Arts had a beneficial impact. The study of Chinese students in the USSR allowed the following generations to implement such valuable experience. The ancient techniques and plotline received a new life in the works of modern artists, which are justifiably regarded as the achievement and progress in the national culture.

Abstract:The object of research of the article is the process of development of art education in the Chinese city of Shanghai at the beginning of the XX century. The subject of the study is the contribution of educational institutions to the cultural life of the city, whose activities were aimed at training masters in the field of fine arts. The purpose of the article was to identify a unique scenario for the development of art education in the Chinese metropolis, in the formation of which the creative traditions of not only the Celestial Empire, but also European countries, including Russia, were included. The article pays special attention to art societies, whose activities in the first quarter of the XX century were particularly active and focused both on the development of art education and the organizing of creative expositions. For the objectivity of the results obtained, unique documents were used in the study, including archival sources and retrospective literature, which determines the scientific novelty of the work. Shanghai in the first quarter of the XX century became a "pioneer" in the formation of the modern system of art education in the country. Under the influence of Western culture, the creative education of Shanghai has undergone profound transformations in a very short time, changing the artistic life of the country, bringing genre, thematic, technological into it.

Abstract:This article is a study of female images in modern Chinese literary works. The author analyzes the evolution of representations of women in modern Chinese literature and their important role in the democratization of society. Through an examination of the works of authors such as Lu Xun, Lao She, Chen Zhongshi, Yu Hua and others, the article reveals diverse aspects of women's experiences, including social injustice, discrimination and exploitation. In addition, the author highlights the influence of literature in shaping public opinion about the role and rights of women, and discusses possible paths towards creating a more equal and inclusive society in the future. The subjects of the study are the works of modern Chinese writers and the female images of these literary works. The main research materials are the modern Chinese literary works of various genres and movements, including novels, short stories, poems and essays. Research methods – analysis of literary sources on the research topic, comparative analysis, content analysis, interpretation of texts, historical method. The purpose of the study is to analyze and evaluate ideas about female characters in modern Chinese literary works, taking into account their influence on the processes of democratization of society. The scientific novelty of this study lies in the fact that it represents an initial research look at female images in modern Chinese literature and their influence on the processes of democratization of society. The work is based on the analysis of contemporary literary works and includes the study of various aspects of women's experience in the context of Chinese culture and society. As a result of the study, new trends and patterns in the representation of female characters will be identified, as well as new approaches to understanding and solving the problems of gender inequality and social discrimination in Chinese society will be formulated.

Abstract:This paper analyses the images of women in Dunhuang murals and their status and role in society in the context of Chinese history, culture and religion, and explores the phenomenon of cross-cultural intermingling in these murals and the influence of foreign cultures on these images in the context of foreign cultural elements and globalisation. To obtain background information about Dunhuang murals through the study of historical documents, Buddhist classics and Dunhuang research materials. Systematically analyses the murals of Guanyin Bodhisattva, the statue of the feeder, the flying nymphs and the legend of the deer maiden, and explores how these images of women incorporate elements of foreign cultures from India, Persia, and Central Asia, demonstrating the phenomenon of cross-cultural intermingling on the Silk Road. The study demonstrates that the images of women in Dunhuang murals demonstrate the status and important role of women in ancient societies, provide rich cultural and historical information for future generations, promote historical understanding and modern recognition of women's power, shed light on the rise of women in ancient societies as well as the fusion of Chinese and foreign cultures millennia ago, and provide invaluable historical experience and insights for women's empowerment and cross-cultural understanding in modern societies.

Abstract:After the defeat in the Opium War of 1840, the Chinese Qing Government realized the advanced nature of Western technologies and culture and proceeded with comprehensive examination of the Western experience. The study of the Western painting by the Chinese artists became an important part of this process. The period from 1900 to 1949 was a pivotal stage in the history of development of the Chinese painting associated with the advent of the Chinese oil painting. This article analyzes the development trends in Chinese painting by means of comparison the corresponding historical documents that resemble the five cultural phenomena emerged in this period; as well as generalizes the stages of studying the Western painting in China during this historical period. The author also analyzes the contribution and impact of the Chinese students upon the development of Chinese oil painting, changes in the painting styles, as well as integration of the Chinese artistic experience in the Western oil painting. The peculiarities of the major associations of Chinese artists of this period are reviewed. The development trends of Chinese oil painting include five aspects. The study of Western painting in China was not an approval of the Western oil painting tradition, but rather a way to improve the outdated Chinese tradition as well as build up its international status. This is precisely why the Chinese government set an implicit goal to popularize the Western art of painting in China. The political reforms that took place in China of that time were an important factor, which contributed to cultural changes. The development of painting became one of the key factors in the development of Chinese culture and art.

Abstract:Cui Xiuwen (b. 1970) and Yu Hong (b. 1966) are contemporary Chinese artists whose images of women reflect a complicated gendered perspective. This article focuses on Cui’s Ladies’ Room (2000) and Yu’s Female Writer (2004, from the series She). Both can be construed as feminist reinterpretations of Chinese works of the imperial era that represented idealized female figures from a male perspective. Ladies’ Room, a video that shows behind-the-scenes images of sex workers in a nightclub washroom, brings to mind earlier paintings that depict women in feminine space. Ladies’ Room, however, incorporates multiple female gazes: not only that of the artist but also those of the subjects, who look at each other and at their own mirror reflections. Female Writer, a diptych consisting of a photograph and painting of the writer Zhao Bo, recalls paintings from the “beautiful women” genre. Though both photograph and painting reflect Yu Hong’s point of view, Zhao Bo was permitted to select her photograph, and thus the work engages with both author’s and subject’s gaze. Ladies’ Room and Female Writer both reclaim female subjectivity as they present images of contemporary Chinese women while also grappling with problems of authenticity, the public/private dichotomy, identity, and self-expression.
