Abstract:The adsorption of several organo-functional groups (-NH2, -CH3, -COOH, -CHO, and -OH) and alanine on Li decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied, based on the first-principle calculations. The calculated binding energies on Li-CNTs show obvious enhancement relative to the cases on pure CNTs, from about 0.3 eV to about 1.4 eV except -CH3, which is attributed to strong electrostatic dipole attraction between positive Li ion and polarized organo-functional groups by charge population analysis. It is interesting that the adsorption could be effectively adjusted under external electric field for the interaction with Li-group dipole. For the combinational contribution of charge redistribution and interaction of inherent electric dipole with external electric field, the adsorption of these organo-functional groups shows two discriminative variety trends. Finally, the adsorption of alanine including -NH2, -CH3, and -COOH groups is studied as an illustration to generalize above conclusions to organic macromolecule on Li decorated CNTs. Abstract:Carbon nanotubes are expected to play an important role in sensing, pollution treatment and separation techniques. This study examines the adsorption behaviors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), n-hexane, benzene, trichloroethylene and acetone on two multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), CNT1 and CNT2. Among these VOCs, acetone exhibits the highest adsorption capacity. The highest adsorption enthalpies and desorption energies of acetone were also observed. The strong chemical interactions between acetone and both MWCNTs may be the result from chemisorption on the topological defects. The adsorption heats of trichloroethylene, benzene, and n-hexane are indicative of physisorption on the surfaces of both MWCNTs. CNT2 presents a higher adsorption capacity than CNT1 due to the existence of an exterior amorphous carbon layer on CNT2. The amorphous carbon enhances the adsorption capacity of organic chemicals on carbon nanotubes. The morphological and structure order of carbon nanotubes are the primary affects on the adsorption process of organic chemicals.

Abstract:Adsorption of 22 nonpolar and polar aromatic compounds on 10 carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with various diameters, lengths and surface oxygen-containing group contents was investigated to develop predictive correlations for adsorption, using the isotherm fitting of Polanyi theory-based Dubinin-Ashtakhov (DA) model. Adsorption capacity of aromatic compounds on CNTs is negatively correlated with melting points of aromatic compounds, and surface oxygen-containing group contents and surface area ratios of mesopores to total pores of CNTs, but positively correlated with total surface area of CNTs. Adsorption affinity is positively correlated with solvatochromic parameters of aromatic compounds, independent of tube lengths and surface oxygen-containing group contents of CNTs, but negatively correlated with surface area ratios of mesopores to total pores of CNTs. The correlations of adsorption capacity and adsorption affinity with properties of both aromatic compounds and CNTs clearly have physical significance, can be used successfully with DA model to predict adsorption of aromatic compounds on CNTs from the well-known physiochemical properties of aromatic compounds (i.e., solvatochromic parameters, melting points) and CNTs (i.e., surface area and total acidic group contents), and thus can facilitate the environmental application of CNTs as sorbents and environmental risk assessment of both aromatic contaminants and CNTs.

Abstract:Understanding adsorptive interactions between organic contaminants and carbon nanotubes is critical to both the environmental application of carbon nanotubes as special adsorbents and the assessment of the potential impact of carbon nanotubes on the fate and transport of organic contaminants in the environment. The adsorption of organic compounds with varied physical-chemical properties (hydrophobicity, polarity, electron polarizability, and size) to one single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) and two multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was evaluated. For a given carbon nanotube, the adsorption affinity correlated poorly with hydrophobicity but increased in the order of nonpolar aliphatic < nonpolar aromatics < nitroaromatics, and within the group of nitroaromatics, the adsorption affinity increased with the number of nitrofunctional groups. We propose that the strong adsorptive interaction between carbon nanotubes and nitroaromatics was due to the pi - pi electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between nitroaromatic molecules (electron acceptors) and the highly polarizable graphene sheets (electron donors) of carbon nanotubes. Additionally, we attribute the stronger adsorption of nonpolar aromatics compared to that of nonpolar aliphatics to the pi-electron coupling between the flat surfaces of both aromatic molecules and carbon nanotubes. For tetra chlorobenzene, the bulkiest adsorbate, adsorption affinity (on a unit surface area basis) to the SWNT was much stronger than to the two MWNTs, indicating a probable molecular sieving effect.
Gas molecule adsorption in carbon nanotubes and nanotube bundles

Abstract:We studied various gas molecules (NO$_2$, O$_2$, NH$_3$, N$_2$, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, H$_2$O, H$_2$, Ar) on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and bundles using first principles methods. The equilibrium position, adsorption energy, charge transfer, and electronic band structures are obtained for different kinds of SWNTs. Most molecules adsorb weakly on SWNTs and can be either charge donor or acceptor to the nanotubes. We find the gas adsorption on the bundle interstitial and groove sties is stronger than that on an individual tube. The electronic properties of SWNTs are sensitive to the adsorption of certain gases such as NO$_2$ and O$_2$. Charge transfer and gas-induced charge fluctuation might significantly affect the transport properties of SWNTs. Our theoretical results are consistent with recent experiments.

Abstract:Competitive adsorption between nonpolar organic compounds and polar ionic organic compounds (IOCs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is essential for application of CNTs as superior sorbents and for environmental risk assessment of both CNTs and organic contaminants. It was observed in this study that adsorption of neutral and dissociated species of polar 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) and 4-chloroaniline (PCAN) on a multiwalled CNT sample (MWCNT15) can be suppressed by nonpolar naphthalene. Naphthalene adsorption can also be suppressed by neutral DCP/PCAN, but not dissociated DCP/PCAN. Moreover, competition of naphthalene decreased the adsorption affinity of neutral DCP/PCAN, but not their adsorption capacity because of the formation of solute bilayer on MWCNT15. For dissociated DCP/PCAN, naphthalene not only decreased their adsorption affinity but also their adsorption capacity because no solute bilayer was formed. Neutral DCP/PCAN also decreased the adsorption affinity and adsorption capacity of naphthalene. These observations indicate that competitive adsorption of naphthalene with DCP/PCAN depends on the dissociation of DCP/PCAN, as interpreted by (i) the different sites on CNTs for adsorption of organic chemicals (i.e., naphthalene, and the neutral and dissociated species of DCP/PCAN), (ii) the interactions between organic chemicals, and (iii) the interactions of organic chemicals with CNT surface.

Abstract:Heteroatoms doping brings a burgeoning class of adsorbents for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is of great importance to reveal the molecular interaction and adsorption mechanism on account of the nanoscale nature of adsorption. Herein, we combined adsorption experiments and theoretical calculations (using porous carbon as adsorbent and graphene as computational model) to reveal the influence of doping oxygen atoms on the surface heterogeneity and the VOCs adsorption performance, and to investigate the synergistic effect of oxygen-containing functional groups. The results show that oxygen doping can significantly change the charge distribution and improve the adsorption and separation of methanol and acetone (the selected representative of VOCs). Among various oxygen-containing functional groups, the carboxyl doped surface displays the largest theoretical adsorption capacity of methanol (36.74 mmol/g) and acetone (18.35 mmol/g) and the highest selectivity (16.11 at 0.1 kPa). Specifically, the doped oxygen containing groups significantly changed the charge distribution on the carbon surface (e.g., –0.50 to 0.43 e for carboxyl group), and enhanced the electrostatic interaction between the surface and VOCs molecules, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity. Moreover, the stronger binding energy between the oxygen-functionalized surface and methanol contributed to the preferential adsorption of methanol on the oxygen active sites, leading to the aggregation of methanol molecules, which is responsible for the high selectivity. Meanwhile, no obvious synergistic effect between oxygen functional groups was found. This study provides fundamental understanding of the role of oxygen-containing groups toward VOCs adsorption.

Unveiling the Role of Hydrophobicity on Multilayer Carbon Nanosheets Enriched in sp2-Carbon for Toluene Adsorption under Humid Conditions

Abstract:Carbon materials are regarded as a promising adsorbent for the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, their adsorption behaviors are usually compromised at ambient conditions, attributed to the competitive VOCs adsorption with water vapor. In this study, we demonstrated that the selectivity for toluene than water of carbon can be effectively enhanced by introducing more sp2-carbon with two-dimensional nanosheets stacked. The multilayer carbon nanosheets enriched with sp2-carbon (CNS-MCA) exhibit a 151° H2O-contact angle, indicating hydrophobicity. Dynamic adsorption behaviors revealed that CNS-MCA retain 71% of their toluene adsorption capacity (91 mg/g) even at 60% relative humidity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, static adsorption studies, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and time-resolved in situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy collectively indicate that toluene exhibits enhanced adsorption and selectivity due to π-π* interactions between its aromatic rings and the sp2-carbon. Conversely, water adsorption is attenuated, attributed to the reduced availability of surface-exposed hydrogen bonds associated with sp2-carbon and the inherent hydrophobic nature of multilayer graphene. This study extends a novel solution for the enhancement of VOCs adsorption under humid conditions.

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic structures and binding properties of nicotine and caffeine adsorbed on single-walled carbon nanotubes to determine whether CNTs are appropriate for filtering or sensing nicotine and caffeine molecules. We find that caffeine adsorbs more strongly than nicotine. The different binding characteristics are discussed by analyzing the modification of the electronic structure of the molecule-adsorbed CNTs. We also calculate the quantum conductance of the CNTs in the presence of nicotine or caffeine adsorbates and demonstrate that the influence of caffeine is stronger than nicotine on the conductance of the host CNT.
Mechanism simulation of polar and nonpolar organic solvent vapor adsorption on a multiwall carbon nanotubes paper gas sensor

Abstract:We investigate the adsorption behavior of polar and nonpolar molecules on carbon nanotube interfaces through computational simulations. Gaussian 16 was utilized to calculate the total energy of each possible molecular structure and analyze the adsorption mechanisms in stacked and inline configurations. The study reveals that nonpolar molecules favor stacked adsorption on two graphene interfaces, while polar molecules prefer inline adsorption. The findings suggest that inline adsorption of polar molecules results in minimal changes to the local dielectric constant, which may explain the absence of multi-step adsorption isotherms. The research examines the stability and energetics of molecular adsorption on graphene layers simulating CNT interfaces. Different types of molecules (polar and nonpolar) exhibit distinct adsorption behaviors, with nonpolar molecules aligning with the IUPAC type VI isotherm model and polar molecules following the Langmuir isotherm model (IUPAC type I). This study provides insight into how molecules are likely to adsorb on CNT surfaces and the impact on the local dielectric constant. This understanding has implications for the design and optimization of CNT-based sensors, particularly in detecting organic solvents and gases in various environments.

Abstract:Adsorption of organic contaminants on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a critical behavior in the environmental application of CNTs as sorbents and in the environmental risk assessment of both organic contaminants and CNTs. Oxidation of CNTs may introduce oxygen-containing groups on CNTs' surface and then alter the adsorption of organic contaminants. In this study, adsorption of polar and nonpolar organic compounds on four multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) containing varied amounts of surface oxygen-containing groups were investigated to examine the influence of CNTs' surface oxidation on adsorption. We observed that surface oxidation of MWCNTs reduced the surface area-normalized adsorption capacity of organic compounds significantly because of the competition of water molecules but did not alter the adsorption affinity. The interactions (i.e., hydrophobic effect, pi-pi bonds, and hydrogen bonds) and the interaction strength for adsorption of organic molecules on MWCNTs could not be altered by the surface oxidation of MWCNTs and thus were responsible for the unaltered adsorption affinity. In addition, the decrease of surface area-normalized adsorption capacity of the organic compound with more polarity and higher adsorption affinity by surface oxidation was less because of the heterogeneous nature of hydrophilic sites of MWCNTs' surface.

Abstract:Effects of aggregation and surface chemistry of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the adsorption of three synthetic organic compounds (SOCs), phenanthrene (PNT), biphenyl (BP), and 2-phenylphenol (2PP), were investigated using commercially available pristine and surface functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). Theoretical calculations and nitrogen adsorption analysis results demonstrated that aggregation of CNTs led to a significant reduction in surface area (especially for the SWNTs), but a significant increase of pore volume (especially for the MWNTs) due to interstices trapped in the CNT aggregates. In contrast to the nitrogen gas adsorption, the liquid phase adsorption results indicated that the adsorption of SOCs by CNTs was controlled by available adsorption surface area rather than pore volume, and aggregation of CNTs was an unfavorable factor for the SOC adsorption. Surface functionalization of CNTs improved their dispersion in aqueous solutions, but decreased their adsorption capacities for the hydrophobic SOCs, which was attributed to the formation of water clusters around the oxygen-containing functional groups. Molecular configurations of SOCs also played a role in their adsorption. For the planar PNT, the SWNTs showed significantly higher adsorption capacities and site energies than the MWNTs, whereas for the nonplanar SOCs the adsorption capacity and site energy differences between the SWNTs and the MWNTs became smaller with increasing concentration of SOCs.

Abstract:Chemisorptions of hydrogen on 4 h carbon nanotubes are studied by first-principles pseudopotential method. The calculated hydrogen binding energies show robust chirality and diameter dependence for the interior and exterior adsorptions, respectively. The band structures of these ultrasmall diameter nanotubes are very sensitive to the hydrogen concentration and can undergo transitions between metal, semiconductor, and insulator. Our calculations also indicate that the hydrogen storage capacity can be as high as 9.8 wt% for the (5,0) tube.
First-principles study of field emission properties of gas adsorption on the carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Carbon-containing gases usually present when preparing carbon nanotubes, and can affect the field emission of carbon nanotubes. Water vapor is also an important kind of gas for field emission, concerned by both experimental and theoretical studies. Under strong electric field, the gas molecules may be decomposed to radicals. Using DMol3 code based on density-functional theory, we calculated the adsorption of the gas molecules CH4, CO and H2O and the CH3 and OH radicals under emission conditions. We found that the H2O and the methyl have advantages to field emission and the CH4, CO and the hydroxyl have disadvantages. The results of H2O and CO are consistent with experiments, and the enhancement of current by CH4 in the experiment may be due to the methyl decomposed from the CH4.

Abstract:The combined effects of hydroxyl/amino functional groups of aromatics and surface O-containing groups of carbon nanotubes on adsorption were evaluated. When normalized for hydrophobicity, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2-naphthol exhibited a greater adsorptive affinity to carbon nanotubes and graphite (a model adsorbent without the surface 0 functionality) than structurally similar 1,3-dichlorobenzene and naphthalene, respectively, and 1-naphthylamine exhibited a much greater adsorptive affinity than all other compounds. Results of the pH-dependency experiments further indicated that the hydroxyl/amino functional groups of the adsorbates and the surface properties of the adsorbents played a combinational role in determining the significance of the nonhydrophobic adsorptive interactions. We propose that the strong adsorptive interaction between hydroxyl-substituted aromatics and carbon nanotubes/graphite was mainly due to the electron-donating effect of the hydroxyl group, which caused a strong electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between the adsorbates and the pi-electron-depleted regions on the graphene surfaces of carbon nanotubes or graphite. In addition to the EDA interaction, Lewis acid-base interaction was likely an extra important mechanism contributing to the strong adsorption of 1-naphthylamine, especially on the O-functionality-abundant carbon nanotubes. The findings of the present study might have significant implications for selective removal of environmental contaminants with carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:With the significant increase in the production and use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), they will be inevitably released into aquatic environments. Therefore, the fate and transport of CNTs in aqueous solutions have attracted extensive attention. In the present work, the effects of natural organic matter (NOM), solution pH and ionic strength on adsorption of three synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs) by both pristine and surface functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were investigated. The three SOCs (phenanthrene, biphenyl, and 2-phenylphenol) with different planarity, polarity, and hydrogen/electron-donor/acceptor ability, representing typical scenarios for the SOC–CNT interactions, were employed as probe molecules. Among the three background solution characteristics examined, NOM showed the most significant effect on SOC adsorption, while solution pH and ionic strength exhibited minimal or negligible impacts. The presence of NOM greatly suppressed the SOC adsorption by CNTs, and the impact on the SWNTs was higher than that on the MWNTs. The planarity and hydrophobicity of SOCs were two important factors determining the effects of NOM, solution pH and ionic strength on their adsorption by CNTs.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention due to their unique electronic structures and transport properties for the application of carbon-based sensor components. It is doubtful in experiments that if the adsorbates, such as the groups of conjugated polymers, hinder the performance of transport on CNTs. Here, we systemically studied the transport properties of common groups (-CH3, -C6H5, -NH2, -OH) adsorbed on (7, 0)-CNT by first-principles calculations. Our results show that the adsorption of surface groups will lead to different impurity states near the Fermi level. The localized electrons at the Fermi level limit the electrical transport properties of CNTs. The electron transport capacity of CNTs becomes weaker with increase in the impurity concentration and the carrier mobility becomes lower. Our research provides an instructive theoretical foundation for fabricating high-performance carbon-based sensor devices.

Abstract:Hierarchical nanoporous carbons (HNC) have been proven to be an effective adsorbent for the adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO 2 However, questions remain regarding the hierarchical structure regulation, the adsorption mechanisms of adsorbate uptake, and interactions within the HNC. We synthesize HNC from wood, using a microwave-induced heating method incorporating K 2CO 3 activation. Our HNC exhibit Murray's law multiscale structures, prompting a molecular-scale study of adsorbate adsorption via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). NMR chemical shifts are consistent with ring-current effects from the adsorbent. Our NMR technique provides a convenient way to quantitate adsorption of adsorbate in HNC. VOC vapor adsorption results show NMR chemical-shift changes with time, suggesting initial adsorption into mesopores, followed by diffusion into micropores. Schroeder's paradox is demonstrated by differences in observed shifts for adsorbed liquid vis-à-vis vapor phase in these HNC. These HNC show high CO 2 adsorption capacity, portending applications to carbon capture.

Adsorption of Hydroxyl- and Amino-Substituted Aromatics to Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:The combined effects of hydroxyl/amino functional groups of aromatics and surface O-containing groups of carbon nanotubes on adsorption were evaluated. When normalized for hydrophobicity, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2-naphthol exhibited a greater adsorptive affinity to carbon nanotubes and graphite (a model adsorbent without the surface O functionality) than structurally similar 1,3-dichlorobenzene and naphthalene, respectively, and 1-naphthylamine exhibited a much greater adsorptive affinity than all other compounds. Results of the pH-dependency experiments further indicated that the hydroxyl/amino functional groups of the adsorbates and the surface properties of the adsorbents played a combinational role in determining the significance of the nonhydrophobic adsorptive interactions. We propose that the strong adsorptive interaction between hydroxyl-substituted aromatics and carbon nanotubes/graphite was mainly due to the electron-donating effect of the hydroxyl group, which caused a strong electron-donor−acceptor (EDA) interaction between the adsorbates and the π-electron-depleted regions on the graphene surfaces of carbon nanotubes or graphite. In addition to the EDA interaction, Lewis acid−base interaction was likely an extra important mechanism contributing to the strong adsorption of 1-naphthylamine, especially on the O-functionality-abundant carbon nanotubes. The findings of the present study might have significant implications for selective removal of environmental contaminants with carbon nanotubes.
