Abstract:To enhance the development of massive open online course (MOOC) teaching and learning, prevalent methods and characteristics employed by college students in MOOC learning strategies must be investigated. This study employed the grounded theory approach to systematically encode and construct a learning strategy model for the use of MOOCs among college students in China. This study used data obtained from 57 college students and applied qualitative research coding procedures and NVivo software (version 12.0). The results revealed that the core learning strategies used by college students in MOOC learning could be categorized into cognitive, resource management, and metacognitive types. Five specific learning strategies were most frequently used: elaboration, interactive and cooperation, help-seeking, effort management, and information selection strategies. However, association and questioning strategies are infrequently employed by college students in their learning. Therefore, educators must actively guide students to expand their innovative thinking abilities by implementing these strategies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to explore the structure and characteristics of effective learning strategies adopted by Chinese university students in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). Specifically, the study systematically codes and constructs a MOOC learning strategy model suitable for Chinese university students through qualitative research methods. ### Background and Motivation With the rapid development of internet technology, especially the popularization of big data and artificial intelligence, a new form of education—Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)—has emerged. MOOC, with its virtual environment, digital resources, and self-directed learning features, has quickly attracted the attention of scholars and is seen as an important way to address global educational challenges. Although MOOC provides high-quality learning resources, the low completion rate and high teacher-student ratio, leading to insufficient interaction between teachers and students, have affected its application and development. Therefore, researching effective MOOC learning strategies is of great significance for improving learning outcomes and completion rates. ### Research Objectives 1. **Identify Effective Learning Strategies**: Identify commonly used cognitive, resource management, and metacognitive learning strategies among Chinese university students in MOOC learning through qualitative research methods. 2. **Analyze Strategy Characteristics**: Analyze the specific content and application characteristics of these strategies in detail, especially high-frequency strategies such as elaboration, interactive cooperation, help-seeking, effort management, and information selection. 3. **Propose Improvement Suggestions**: Based on the research results, provide guidance for educators to help students expand their innovative thinking abilities and enhance the effectiveness of MOOC learning. ### Main Findings - **Core Learning Strategy Classification**: The study found that the core strategies commonly used by university students in MOOC learning can be classified into cognitive strategies, resource management strategies, and metacognitive strategies. - **High-Frequency Strategies**: The five most frequently used learning strategies include elaboration, interactive cooperation, help-seeking, effort management, and information selection. - **Low-Frequency Strategies**: Association and questioning strategies are less frequently adopted by students. - **Strategy Application Characteristics**: Students exhibit high autonomy and critical thinking abilities in MOOC learning, but there is still a lack of deep learning and innovative thinking cultivation. ### Conclusion To improve the effectiveness and completion rate of MOOC learning, educators need to actively guide students to adopt more innovative thinking strategies, especially in terms of association and questioning. Additionally, optimizing course design and teaching methods to enhance teacher-student interaction is also an important measure to improve MOOC learning outcomes.
