Abstract:Advances in direct laser writing to attain super-resolution are required to improve fabrication performance and develop potential applications for nanophotonics. In this study, a novel technique using single-color peripheral photoinhibition lithography was developed to improve the resolution of direct laser writing while preventing the chromatic aberration characteristics of conventional multicolor photoinhibition lithography, thus offering a robust tool for fabricating 2D and 3D nanophotonic structures. A minimal feature size of 36 nm and a resolution of 140 nm were achieved with a writing speed that was at least 10 times faster than existing photoinhibition lithography. Super-resolution and fast scanning enable the fabrication of spin-decoupled metasurfaces in the visible range within a printing duration of a few minutes. Finally, a subwavelength photonic crystal with a near-ultraviolet structural color was fabricated to demonstrate the potential of 3D printing. This technique is a flexible and reliable tool for fabricating ultracompact optical devices.
Laser writing of bright colours on near-percolation plasmonic reflector arrays

Abstract:Colouration by surface nanostructuring has attracted a great deal of attention by the virtue of making use of environment-friendly recyclable materials and generating non-bleaching colours [1-8]. Recently, it was found possible to delegate the task of colour printing to laser post-processing that modifies carefully designed and fabricated nanostructures [9,10]. Here we take the next crucial step in the development of structural colour printing by dispensing with preformed nanostructures and using instead near-percolation metal films atop dielectric-metal sandwiches, i.e., near-percolation plasmonic reflector arrays. Scanning rapidly (~ 20 {\mu}m/s) across 4-nm-thin island-like gold films supported by 30-nm-thin silica layers atop 100-nm-thick gold layers with a strongly focused Ti-sapphire laser beam, while adjusting the average laser power from 1 to 10 mW, we produce bright colours varying from green to red by laser-heating-induced merging and reshaping of gold islands. Selection of strongly heated islands and their reshaping, both originating from the excitation of plasmonic resonances, are strongly influenced by the polarization direction of laser illumination, so that the colours produced are well pronounced only when viewed with the same polarization. Conversely, the laser colour writing with circular polarizations results in bright polarization-independent colour images. The fabrication procedure for near-percolation reflector arrays is exceedingly simple and scalable to mass production, while the laser-induced modification occurs inherently with the subwavelength resolution. This unique combination of remarkable features makes the approach developed for laser colour writing readily amenable for practical implementation and use in diverse applications ranging from nanoscale patterning for security marking to large-scale colour printing for decoration.

Abstract:Recently, color generation in resonant nanostructures have been intensively studied. Despite of their exciting progresses, the structural colors are usually generated by the plasmonic resonances of metallic nanoparticles. Due to the inherent plasmon damping, such plasmonic nanostructures are usually hard to create very distinct color impressions. Here we utilize the concept of metasurfaces to produce all-dielectric, low-loss, and high-resolution structural colors. We have fabricated TiO2 metasurfaces with electron-beam lithography and a very simple lift-off process. The optical characterizations showed that the TiO2 metasurfaces with different unit sizes could generate high reflection peaks at designed wavelengths. The maximal reflectance was as high as 64% with full width at half-maximum (fwhm) around 30 nm. Consequently, distinct colors have been observed in bright field and the generated colors covered the entire visible spectral range. The detailed numerical analysis shows that the distinct colors were generated by the electric resonance and magnetic resonances in TiO2 metasurfaces. Based on the unique properties of magnetic resonances, distinct colors have been observed in bright field when the metasurfaces were reduced to a 4 × 4 array, giving a spatial resolution around 16000 dpi. Considering the cost, stability, and CMOS-compatibility, this research will be important for the structural colors to reach real-world industrial applications.

Abstract:Structural colorations with all-dielectric metasurfaces provide a dye-free approach for integrated sub-wavelength color generation with enhanced stability and environmental friendliness. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously tailor all the elementary color functions, hue, saturation, and brightness, in a simple platform. Here, we report a generic principle to create bright-field full-color nanoprinting with brightness control by using all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of arrays of Si elliptical nanopillars. It is demonstrated that the lower order Mie resonances in the reflection spectra redshift with the sizes of the elliptical nanopillars when the incident light polarization is fixed along the major or minor axes. By designing the structure carefully, basic colors, such as red, green, blue, and yellow, are obtained across the visible spectrum. Experimental measurements show that the fabricated colors are independent with respect to the viewing angle owing to the Mie resonance origin. Moreover, we demonstrate that, by varying the angle of either the polarizer or the analyzer, the resonant wavelengths keep invariant while the reflection intensity decreases, leading to the tuning of the brightness of colors from bright to dark without changing the hue and saturation. Our scheme provides a simple yet general approach for the full hue, saturation, brightness control of structural colors, holding great potential in diverse applications, such as anti-counterfeiting technologies, 3D displays, and information storage.

Abstract:In this work, we comprehensively review Mie resonator-based and nonlocal resonant metasurfaces working in the reflection configuration for color printing applications, with particular attention to high observation angle applications. While Mie resonator-based metasurfaces are found to be simple to design and present low sensitivity to the observation angle, they present the drawback of low color saturation. By contrast, square lattice photonic crystal waveguide-based metasurfaces show very selective spectral responses, yielding pure colors but with high selectivity on the observation angle. In order to harness the exceptional color-filtering properties of photonic crystal waveguides and maintain the desired spectral response under oblique angles of observation, a rectangular lattice for the crystal structure is proposed. We provide design rules and examples in order to produce angularly robust, vivid colors at any desired wavelength within the visible spectrum. Furthermore, by exploiting the polarization of the incident light and adapting the design of the photonic crystal structures, we demonstrate color multiplexing for cryptography applications.

All-Dielectric Silicon Nanoring Metasurface for Full-Color Printing

Abstract:Structural color has been particularly attractive as it provides a highly promising approach for next-generation color printing. Plasmonic nanostructures have been intensively investigated for color printing, while suffering from intrinsic loss that degrades the quality of the coloration. Dielectric materials have emerged as an alternative because of their high refractive index that enables highly confined optical modes within the nanostructure at the diffraction limit. Here, we demonstrate an all-dielectric nanoring metasurface for coloration. By harnessing the intrinsic nanoring structure design, vivid structural color has been achieved in the visible range. The color gamut is expected to occupy 115% of the standard color space (sRGB) on the chromaticity diagram of the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) 1931 in theory. High-speed laser writing of structural colors for full-color inkless printing

Abstract:It is a formidable challenge to simultaneously achieve wide gamut, high resolution, high-speed while low-cost manufacturability, long-term stability, and viewing-angle independence in structural colors for practical applications. The conventional nanofabrication techniques fail to match the requirement in low-cost, large-scale and flexible manufacturing. Processing by ultrashort lasers can achieve extremely high throughput while suffering from a narrow gamut of 15% sRGB or angle-dependent colors. Here, we demonstrate an all-in-one solution for ultrafast laser-produced structural colors on ultrathin hybrid films that comprise an absorbent TiAlN layer coating on a metallic TiN layer. Under pulsed laser irradiation, the absorption behaviors of the TiAlN-TiN hybrid films are tailored by photothermal-induced oxidation on the topmost TiAlN. The oxidized films exhibit double-resonance absorption, which is attributed to the non-trivial phase shifts both at the oxide-TiAlN interface, and at the TiAlN-TiN interface. By varying the accumulated laser fluence to modulate the oxidation depth, an unprecedented large gamut of 90% sRGB is obtained. Our highly reproducible printing technique manifests angle-insensitive colors the variation of Hue is <0.14pi when viewing angles changing from 6 to 60. The full-color printing speed reaches to 1.4 cm2/s and the highest printing resolution exceeds 25000 dpi. The durability of the laser-printed colors is confirmed by fastness examination, including salt fog, double-85, light bleaching, and adhesion tests. These features render our technique to be competitive for high-throughput industrial applications.

Abstract:Structural color, arising from the interaction between nanostructures and light, has experienced rapid development in recent years. However, high-order Mie resonances in dielectric materials often induce unnecessary sub-peaks, particularly at shorter wavelengths, reducing the vibrancy of colors. To address this, we have developed a multilayer dielectric metasurface based on silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN), achieving expanded color gamut through precise refractive index matching and suppression of high-order resonances. This strategy introduces more design dimensions and can reduce the complexity of material deposition. It enables the generation of vibrant colors in a 3 × 3 array, with a resolution of approximately 25,400 dpi, demonstrating its potential applications in displays.

Abstract:Metasurfaces enable the multidimensional manipulation of light fields in a subwavelength scale. However, the low-cost preparation of large-area metasurfaces is still a challenge. In this Letter, we first, to the best of our knowledge, use the laser plasmonic nano-printing technique to efficiently manufacture metasurfaces with multidimensional manipulation capability. By utilizing a phase-polarization mapping method, we fabricated a silicon-based metasurface for color display, and indium tin oxide-based metasurfaces for decoupled near- and far-field holographic displays. This flexible and efficient laser plasmonic nano-printing method has great potential in the preparation of large-area metasurfaces, and is of great significance to promote the practical application of metasurfaces.
All-dielectric Colored Truncated Cone Metasurfaces with Silicon Mie Magnetic Resonators

Abstract:Printing technologies based on plasmonic structures have been intensively studied for their great advantages over organic colors and pigments. However, metallic nanoparticles have inherent plasmon damping and possess mainly electric-like resonances, thus there exists an urgent need for another degree of controlling the structural colors, for example the magnetic resonance modes. Here we propose truncated cone shaped silicon metasurfaces and numerically simulate their reflection characteristics. The designed metasurfaces are based mainly on magnetic Mie resonances because the strength of electric resonances is negligibly small compared with that of magnetic resonances. From numerical simulation, the intensity of the reflection peak reaches almost 90% and the full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of reflectance spectrum is 43nm. More detailed numerical analysis shows that distinct colors can be obtained giving a spatial resolution around 85000dpi. Specific colors with saturation close to 1 are available by selecting appropriate geometric dimension and period of the structure, which indicate the great application perspective of the proposed metasurfaces to produce well-defined colors covering the entire visible spectrum. The advantages of the designed metasurfaces are polarization-independence, cost-effective, stable, sustainable and CMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor)-compatible. Furthermore, the proposed structure works with a low aspect ratio of 0.46, which largely relieves the difficulty of process manufacturing.

Abstract:High-index dielectric metasurfaces featuring Mie-type electric and magnetic resonances have been of a great interest in a variety of applications such as imaging, sensing, photovoltaics and others, which led to the necessity of an efficient large-scale fabrication technique. To address this, here we demonstrate the use of single-pulse laser interference for direct patterning of an amorphous silicon film into an array of Mie resonators. The proposed technique is based on laser-interference-induced dewetting. A precise control of the laser pulse energy enables the fabrication of ordered dielectric metasurfaces in areas spanning tens of micrometers and consisting of thousands of hemispherical nanoparticles with a single laser shot. The fabricated nanoparticles exhibit a wavelength-dependent optical response with a strong electric dipole signature. Variation of the pre-deposited silicon film thickness allows tailoring of the resonances in the targeted visible and infrared spectral ranges. Such direct and high-throughput fabrication paves the way towards a simple realization of spatially invariant metasurface-based devices.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new form of nanostructures with Al film deposited on a patterned dielectric material for generating structural color, which is induced by local surface plasmonic resonant (LSPR) absorption in sub-wavelength-indented hole/ring arrays. Unlike other reported results obtained by using focus ion beam (FIB) to create metallic nanostructures, the nano-sized hole/ring arrays in Al film in this work are replicated by high resolution electron beam lithography (EBL) combined with self-aligned metallization. Clear structural color is observed and systematically studied by numerical simulations as well as optical characterizations. The central color is strongly related to the geometric size, which provides us with good opportunities to dye the colorless Al surface by controlling the hole/ring dimensions (both diameter and radius), and to open up broad applications in display, jewelry decoration, green production of packing papers, security code, and counterfeits prevention.

Abstract:Metallic micro/nano structures with special physicochemical properties have undergone rapid development owing to their broad applications in micromachines and microdevices. Ultrafast laser processing is generally accepted as an effective technology for functional structures manufacture, however, the controllable fabrication of specific metallic micro/nano structures remains a challenge. Here, this work proposes a novel strategy of laser induced transient solid-liquid transition to fabricate unique structures. Through modulating the transient state of metal from solid to liquid phase using the initial pulse excitation, the subsequent ultrafast pulse-induced recoil pressure can suppress the plasma emission and removal of liquid phase metals, resulting in the controllable fabrication of coffee-ring structures. The solid-liquid transition dynamics, which related with the transient reflectivity and plasma intensity, are revealed by established two temperature model coupled with molecular dynamics model. The coffee-ring structure exhibits tunable structure color owing to various optical response, which can be used for color printing with large scale and high resolution. This work provides a promising strategy for fabricating functional micro/nano structures, which can greatly broaden the potential applications.

Abstract:Plasmonic structural colors have plenty of advantages over traditional colors based on colorants. The pulsed laser provides an important method generating plasmonic structural colors with high efficiency and low cost. Here, we present plasmonic color printing Al nanodisc structures through curvature-driven shape transition. We systematically study the mechanism of morphologic evolution of the Al nanodisc below the thermal melting threshold. A multi-pulse-induced accumulated photo thermal effect and subsequent curvature-driven surface atom diffusion model are adopted to explain the controllable shape transition. The shape transition and corresponding plasmonic resonances of the nanodisc can be independently and precisely modulated by controlled irradiations. This method opens new ways towards high-fidelity color prints in a highly efficient and facile laser writing fashion.

Abstract:A laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS), which can be easily produced by femtosecond laser ablation, is a unique nanostructure with a visible refractive color that can be controlled by altering its orientation and uniformity, making it suitable for use in colorful marking, camouflage, and anti-counterfeiting measures. However, single-mode information camouflage can no longer meet increasingly higher-level security requirements. Therefore, metasurfaces offer revolutionary solutions. In this study, conceptual metasurfaces of pure tungsten are theoretically proposed and verified using hierarchical LIPSS/nanoparticle (NP) nanostructures as meta-atoms. The anisotropy of the LIPSS nanostructure enables polarization-sensitive optical modulation, whereas the spatial configuration, particle size, and period of LIPSS in the LIPSS/NP meta-atoms provide flexibility for tailoring broadband optical responses. In x-polarization, the LIPSS/NP meta-atom system provides more visible colors and divergent infrared absorbance (emission) than in y-polarized and unpolarized modes, paving the way for vividly colorful polarization-sensitive displays and information camouflage in infrared bands. A simplified rendition of the world-famous painting “The Starry Night” by Van Gogh is used as a proof-of-concept. Preliminary experimental results are presented, based on which the feasibility and challenges for laser nanomanufacturing of the proposed conceptual metasurfaces are discussed, aiming to provide inspiration for the development of novel metasurfaces through interdisciplinary studies.

Abstract:Structural color is a vibrant color produced by optical effects such as interference, diffraction, or scattering of incident light interacting with the nanostructure, which has the advantages of environmental protection, high saturation, and high resolution. High saturation and dynamic tunability are the current research hotspots for structural color. We achieve full-color wide gamut structural colors and anti-counterfeit functions by an all-dielectric chiral metasurface consisting of half-gammadion-shaped resonators embedded in PMMA and a top TiO2 layer on quartz coated with an ITO layer. This research has significant implications in micro-display, nano-printing, anti-counterfeiting, and information encryption. Structural color is anticipated to replace pigmented or chemical color due to its superior saturation, resolution, environmental friendliness, and longevity. We achieve a full-color gamut of structural colors and anti-counterfeit functions by an all-dielectric chiral metasurface consisting of half-gammadion-shaped resonators embedded in PMMA and a top TiO2 layer on quartz coated with an ITO layer. The prominent resonance peaks of this embedded chiral metasurface under the cross-polarization condition, which are provided by the polarization conversion features of the chiral structure, lead to extremely saturated structural colors. The color phase mainly depends on the structure's period, opening up a full-color range well beyond sRGB. Especially, we demonstrate a star with hidden information of the letter "A" and the Chinese word " " by taking advantage of the difference in the color phase change under different polarization conditions to decode the information, thus realizing the anti-counterfeiting function. Our proposed embedded chiral metasurface provides dual-function structural colors and is highly promising for micro-display, nanoprinting, anti-counterfeiting, data storage, and information encryption.

Abstract:An anisotropic plasmonic surface of nanoellipsoid arrays is successfully fabricated on an Au film using slit-shaping-based femtosecond laser nanoprinting. The size and orientation of the nanoellipsoid can be exquisitely and flexibly controlled by adjusting the width and direction of the slit and the laser pulse energy. By dark-field optical micro-spectroscopy, anisotropic plasmonic color rendering as well as resonant light scattering from the lateral and vertical modes are experimentally and theoretically investigated in the visible spectral range. In addition, prospective use in the fields of steganographic encryption and multidimensional optical multiplexing is also proposed.

Abstract:Structural colors engineering as a promising research area provides a high-resolution and environmental-friendly sustainable colors implementation. Here, metasurface-based concept was used to design waveguides and gratings of Si3N4 material on silicon dioxide substrates. The shift of reflection peaks can be controlled by structural parameters and efficiencies exceeded 90% with half height and width less than 10 nm. This induced structural color with superior saturation. Moreover, such nanostructures showed good sensitivity to polarization angle and incident angle of incident light. The proposed coloring devices look promising for applications in active color displays, imaging devices, and anti-counterfeiting and so on.
