Abstract:We present a general framework, treating Lipschitz domains in Riemannian manifolds, that provides conditions guaranteeing the existence of norming sets and generalized local polynomial reproduction - a powerful tool used in the analysis of various mesh-free methods and a mesh-free method in its own right. As a key application, we prove the existence of smooth local polynomial reproductions on compact subsets of algebraic manifolds in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with Lipschitz boundary. These results are then applied to derive new findings on the existence, stability, regularity, locality, and approximation properties of shape functions for a coordinate-free moving least squares approximation method on algebraic manifolds, which operates directly on point clouds without requiring tangent plane approximations.

Abstract:In this paper, convergence rate of the reproducing kernel method for solving boundary value problems is studied. The equivalence of two reproducing kernel spaces and some results of adjoint operator are proved. Based on the classical properties of piecewise linear interpolating function, we provide the convergence rate analysis of at least second order. Moreover, some numerical examples showing the accuracy of the proposed estimations are also given.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of polyanalytic functions of infinite order. First we study in details the counterpart of the Fock space and related results in this framework. In this case the kernel function is given by $\displaystyle e^{z\overline{w}+\overline{z}w}$ which can be connected to kernels of polyanalytic Fock spaces of finite order. Segal-Bargmann and Berezin type transforms are also considered in this setting. Then, we study the reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of complex-valued functions with reproducing kernel $\displaystyle\frac{1}{(1-z\overline{w})(1-\overline{z}w)}$ and $\displaystyle\frac{1}{1-2{\rm Re}\, z\overline{w}}$. The corresponding backward shift operators are introduced and investigated.

Rigidity of inverse problems for nonlinear elliptic equations on manifolds

Abstract:We consider the inverse problem of determining coefficients appearing in semilinear elliptic equations stated on Riemannian manifolds with boundary given the knowledge of the associated Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We begin with a negative answer to this problem. Owing to this obstruction, we consider a new formulation of our inverse problem in terms of a rigidity problem. Precisely, we consider cases where the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of a semilinear equation coincides with the one of a linear equation and ask whether this implies that the equation must indeed be linear. We give a positive answer to this rigidity problem under some assumptions imposed to the Riemannian manifold and to the semilinear term under consideration.

Abstract:A few novel radial basis function (RBF) discretization schemes for partial differential equations are developed in this study. For boundary-type methods, we derive the indirect and direct symmetric boundary knot methods. Based on the multiple reciprocity principle, the boundary particle method is introduced for general inhomogeneous problems without using inner nodes. For domain-type schemes, by using the Green integral we develop a novel Hermite RBF scheme called the modified Kansa method, which significantly reduces calculation errors at close-to-boundary nodes. To avoid Gibbs phenomenon, we present the least square RBF collocation scheme. Finally, five types of the kernel RBF are also briefly presented.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the approximation properties of kernel interpolants on manifolds. The kernels we consider will be obtained by the restriction of positive definite kernels on $\R^d$, such as radial basis functions (RBFs), to a smooth, compact embedded submanifold $\M\subset \R^d$. For restricted kernels having finite smoothness, we provide a complete characterization of the native space on $\M$. After this and some preliminary setup, we present Sobolev-type error estimates for the interpolation problem. Numerical results verifying the theory are also presented for a one-dimensional curve embedded in $\R^3$ and a two-dimensional torus.

Rigidity of random stationary measures and applications to point processes

Abstract:The mass rigidity of a stationary random measure $\mathsf{M}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ or $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (called number rigidity for a point process) entails that for a bounded set $A$ the knowledge of M on Ac determines $\mathsf{M}(A)$; the $k$-order rigidity for an integer $k$ means we can recover the moments of the restriction of $\mathsf{M}$ on $A^{c}$ up to order $k$. We show that the $k$-rigidity properties of a random stationary measure $\mathsf{M}$ can be characterised by the integrability properties around 0 of $s$, the continuous part of the spectral measure, by exploiting a connection with Schwartz' Paley-Wiener theorem for analytic functions of exponential type. If $1/s$ is not integrable in zero, $\mathsf{M}$ is mass rigid, and similarly if $s$ has a zero of order $2k$ in 0, then $\mathsf{M}$ is $k$-rigid. In the continuous setting, these local conditions are also necessary if $s$ has finitely many zeros, or is isotropic, or is at the opposite separable. This explains why no model seems to exhibit rigidity in dimension $d\geqslant 3$, and allows to efficiently recover many recent rigidity results about point processes. In the discrete setting, these results hold provided $\#A > 2k$. For a continuous Determinantal point process with reduced kernel $\kappa$, $k$-rigidity is equivalent to $(1-\widehat{\kappa^2})^{-1}$ having a zero of order $2k$ in 0, which answers questions on completeness and number rigidity. We also explore the consequences of these statements in the less tractable realm of Riesz gases.

Error Bounds for a Kernel-Based Constrained Optimal Smoothing Approximation

Abstract:This paper establishes error bounds for the convergence of a piecewise linear approximation of the constrained optimal smoothing problem posed in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS). This problem can be reformulated as a Bayesian estimation problem involving a Gaussian process related to the kernel of the RKHS. Consequently, error bounds can be interpreted as a quantification of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) accuracy. To our knowledge, no error bounds have been proposed for this type of problem so far. The convergence results are provided as a function of the grid size, the regularity of the kernel, and the distance from the kernel interpolant of the approximation to the set of constraints. Inspired by the MaxMod algorithm from recent literature, which sequentially allocates knots for the piecewise linear approximation, we conduct our analysis for non-equispaced knots. These knots are even allowed to be non-dense, which impacts the definition of the optimal smoothing solution and our error bound quantifiers. Finally, we illustrate our theorems through several numerical experiments involving constraints such as boundedness and monotonicity.

Abstract:In this letter, to fit the character of solutions to impulsive boundary value problems (IBVPs), we firstly construct a piecewise continuous space using the reproducing kernel function (RKF) of smooth reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) W3. Then we present a fourth order convergent collocation approach for IBVPs by using the piecewise continuous basis functions yielded by RKFs in W3. Also, the convergence order of our approach is proved. The accuracy and convergence order are shown numerically.

Abstract:Interpolation models are critical for a wide range of applications, from numerical optimization to artificial intelligence. The reliability of the provided interpolated value is of utmost importance, and it is crucial to avoid the insurgence of spurious noise. Noise sources can be prevented using proper countermeasures when the training set is designed, but the data sparsity is inevitable in some cases. A typical example is represented by the application of an optimization algorithm: the area where the minimum or maximum of the objective function is assumed to be present is where new data is abundantly added, but other areas of design variable space are significantly neglected. In these cases, a regularization of the interpolation model becomes absolutely crucial. In this paper we are presenting an approach for the regularization of an interpolator based on the control of its kernel function via the condition number of the self-correlation matrix.

Abstract:Given the reproducing kernel $k$ of the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_k$ we study spaces $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$ whose reproducing kernel has the form $k(1-bb^*)$, where $b$ is a row-contraction on $\mathcal{H}_k$. In terms of reproducing kernels this it the most far-reaching generalization of the classical de Branges-Rovnyaks spaces, as well as their very recent generalization to several variables. This includes the so called sub-Bergman spaces in one or several variables. We study some general properties of $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$ e.g. when the inclusion map into $\mathcal{H}$ is compact. Our main result provides a model for $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$ reminiscent of the Sz.-Nagy-Foiaş model for contractions. As an application we obtain sufficient conditions for the containment and density of the linear span of $\{k_w:w\in\mathcal{X}\}$ in $\mathcal{H}_k(b)$. In the standard cases this reduces to containment and density of polynomials. These methods resolve a very recent conjecture regarding polynomial approximation in spaces with kernel $\frac{(1-b(z)b(w)^*)^m}{(1-z\overline w)^\beta}, 1\leq m<\beta, m\in\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:In this paper, by employing a class of reproducing kernel functions (RKFs), we discuss new techniques for constructing univariate splines interpolations. In the method, the basis of univariate splines are yielded by the RKFs directly. Also, the present method does not require the derivative information. The simulation results of numerical experiments demonstrate the validity of this method.

Abstract:Reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces are elucidated without assuming prior familiarity with Hilbert spaces. Compared with extant pedagogic material, greater care is placed on motivating the definition of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and explaining when and why these spaces are efficacious. The novel viewpoint is that reproducing kernel Hilbert space theory studies extrinsic geometry, associating with each geometric configuration a canonical overdetermined coordinate system. This coordinate system varies continuously with changing geometric configurations, making it well-suited for studying problems whose solutions also vary continuously with changing geometry. This primer can also serve as an introduction to infinite-dimensional linear algebra because reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces have more properties in common with Euclidean spaces than do more general Hilbert spaces.

Extending error bounds for radial basis function interpolation to measuring the error in higher order Sobolev norms

Abstract:Radial basis functions (RBFs) are prominent examples for reproducing kernels with associated reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs). The convergence theory for the kernel-based interpolation in that space is well understood and optimal rates for the whole RKHS are often known. Schaback added the doubling trick, which shows that functions having double the smoothness required by the RKHS (along with complicated, albeit complicated boundary behavior) can be approximated with higher convergence rates than the optimal rates for the whole space. Other advances allowed interpolation of target functions which are less smooth, and different norms which measure interpolation error. The current state of the art of error analysis for RBF interpolation treats target functions having smoothness up to twice that of the native space, but error measured in norms which are weaker than that required for membership in the RKHS. Motivated by the fact that the kernels and the approximants they generate are smoother than required by the native space, this article extends the doubling trick to error which measures higher smoothness. This extension holds for a family of kernels satisfying easily checked hypotheses which we describe in this article, and includes many prominent RBFs. In the course of the proof, new convergence rates are obtained for the abstract operator considered by Devore and Ron, and new Bernstein estimates are obtained relating high order smoothness norms to the native space norm.

Abstract:We show that properties of pairs of finite, positive and regular Borel measures on the complex unit circle such as domination, absolute continuity and singularity can be completely described in terms of containment and intersection of their reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of `Cauchy transforms' in the complex unit disk. This leads to a new construction of the classical Lebesgue decomposition and proof of the Radon--Nikodym theorem using reproducing kernel theory and functional analysis.

Abstract:The main purpose of our paper is a new approach to design of algorithms of Kaczmarz type in the framework of operators in Hilbert space. Our applications include a diverse list of optimization problems, new Karhunen-Loève transforms, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for digital images. A key feature of our algorithms is our use of recursive systems of projection operators. Specifically, we apply our recursive projection algorithms for new computations of PCA probabilities and of variance data. For this we also make use of specific reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, factorization for kernels, and finite-dimensional approximations. Our projection algorithms are designed with view to maximum likelihood solutions, minimization of "cost" problems, identification of principal components, and data-dimension reduction.
