Abstract:We examine the hydrodynamics of systems with spontaneously broken multipolar symmetries using a systematic effective field theory. We focus on the simplest non-trivial setting: a system with charge and dipole symmetry, but without momentum conservation. When no symmetries are broken, our formalism reproduces the quartic subdiffusion ($\omega \sim -i k^4$) characteristic of `fracton hydrodynamics' with conserved dipole moment. Our formalism also captures spontaneous breaking of charge and/or dipole symmetry. When charge symmetry is spontaneously broken, the hydrodynamic modes are quadratically propagating and quartically relaxing ($\omega \sim \pm k^2 - ik^4$). When the dipole symmetry is spontaneously broken but the charge symmetry is preserved, then we find quadratically relaxing (diffusive) transverse modes, plus another mode which depending on parameters may be either purely diffusive ($\omega \sim -i k^2$) or quadratically propagating and quadratically relaxing ($\omega \sim \pm k^2 -i k^2$). Our work provides concrete predictions that may be tested in near-term cold atom experiments, and also lays out a general framework that may be applied to study systems with spontaneously broken multipolar symmetries.

Hydrodynamics as the effective field theory of strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking

Abstract:Inspired by the hunt for new phases of matter in quantum mixed states, it has recently been proposed that the equivalence of microcanonical and canonical ensembles in statistical mechanics is a manifestation of strong-to-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking (SWSSB) in an underlying many-body quantum description. Here, we build an effective field theory for SWSSB of a global U(1) symmetry; the answer exactly reproduces the Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory of diffusion for the conserved charge. We conclude that hydrodynamics can be understood as a theory of "superfluidity" for the broken strong symmetry: a non-vanishing susceptibility is a measurable order parameter for SWSSB, the diffusion mode is the Goldstone boson of the spontaneously broken continuous symmetry, and a generalization of Goldstone's Theorem implies that the diffusion mode is always long-lived. This perspective provides a transparent physical explanation for the unusual "reparameterization" symmetries which are a necessary ingredient of Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theories for "normal fluids".

Hydrodynamics and instabilities of relativistic superfluids at finite superflow

Abstract:We study the linear response of relativistic superfluids with a non-zero superfluid velocity. For sufficiently large superflow, an instability develops via the crossing of a pole of the retarded Green's functions to the upper half complex frequency plane. We show that this is caused by a local thermodynamic instability, i.e. when an eigenvalue of the static susceptibility matrix (the second derivatives of the free energy) diverges and changes sign. The onset of the instability occurs when $\partial_{\zeta}(n_s\zeta)=0$, with $\zeta$ the norm of the superfluid velocity and $n_s$ the superfluid density. The Landau instability for non-relativistic superfluids such as Helium 4 also coincides with the non-relativistic version of this criterion. We then turn to gauge/gravity duality and show that this thermodynamic instability criterion applies equally well to strongly-coupled superfluids. In passing, we compute holographically a number of transport coefficients parametrizing deviations out-of-equilibrium in the hydrodynamic regime and demonstrate that the gapless quasinormal modes of the dual planar black hole match those predicted by superfluid hydrodynamics.

Abstract:Dipole-conserving fluids serve as examples of kinematically constrained systems that can be understood on the basis of symmetry. They are known to display various exotic features including glassylike dynamics, subdiffusive transport, and immobile excitations dubbed fractons. Unfortunately, such systems have so far escaped a complete macroscopic formulation as viscous fluids. In this work, we construct a consistent hydrodynamic description for fluids invariant under translation, rotation, and dipole shift symmetry. We use symmetry principles to formulate a thermodynamic theory for dipole-conserving systems at equilibrium and apply irreversible thermodynamics in order to elucidate dissipative effects. Remarkably, we find that the inclusion of the energy conservation not only renders the longitudinal modes diffusive rather than subdiffusive but also diffusion is present even at the lowest order in the derivative expansion. This work paves the way towards an effective description of many-body systems with constrained dynamics such as ensembles of topological defects, fracton phases of matter, and certain models of glasses.

Symmetries and conservation laws in the Lagrangian picture of quantum hydrodynamics

Abstract:Quantum hydrodynamics represents quantum mechanics through two complementary models: the Eulerian picture, a direct transcription of wave mechanics, and the Lagrangian picture, in which the quantum state is represented by the collective motion of a continuum of fluid particles, the latter being obtained by continuously varying the particle label. The Lagrangian picture thus adds variables to the quantum formalism and exhibits a corresponding new quantum symmetry viz. a continuous particle-relabelling covariance group. Using Noether's theorem, the relabelling symmetry is derived as a component of a general investigation of symmetries and conservation laws in the quantum Lagrangian picture. Relations with symmetries and conservation laws in the Eulerian picture are explored in detail. Alongside the infinite relabelling group, the 12-parameter kinematical covariance group of the Schrödinger equation is derived. It is stressed that the role of label transformations extends beyond the class corresponding to Eulerian invariance. As an example, it is shown that the linear superposition of waves, a fundamental symmetry of the quantum Eulerian picture, can be generated by a deformation-dependent label transformation in the Lagrangian picture.

Universality classes of relativistic fluid dynamics: Applications

Abstract:Using a formalism that was recently developed in a companion Letter, we rigorously prove the equivalence, in the linear regime, of a number of apparently different relativistic hydrodynamic theories proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that Hydro+ is indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory for bulk viscosity, which in turn is indistinguishable from a reacting mixture. The two-fluid model for superfluidity coincides with the Israel-Stewart theory for heat conduction in the limit of infinite conductivity, and this explains why the latter has a second sound. Also, MIS* is equivalent to the Burgers model for viscoelasticity, and this implies that the former must exhibit an elastic behavior at high frequencies. Additionally, we show that if the degrees of freedom and the conservation laws of a hydrodynamic theory have the same geometric character as those of the Israel-Stewart theory, then such theory must be indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory in the linear regime. This explains why all second-order theories turn out to be identical near equilibrium. Finally, we construct the first linearized model, to our knowledge, for a relativistic supersolid that is proven to be causal, stable, and strongly hyperbolic. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.096041 © 2024 American Physical Society

Hydrodynamics with Triangle Anomalies

Abstract:We consider the hydrodynamic regime of theories with quantum anomalies for global currents. We show that a hitherto discarded term in the conserve current is not only allowed by symmetries, but is in fact required by triangle anomalies and the second law of thermodynamics. This term leads to a number of new effects, one of which is chiral separation in a rotating fluid at nonzero chemical potential. The new kinetic coefficients can be expressed, in a unique fashion, through the anomalies coefficients and the equation of state. We briefly discuss the relevance of this new hydrodynamic term for physical situations, including heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:We investigate the linearized stability and causality properties of relativistic viscous superfluid hydrodynamics. The Landau-Lifshitz-Clark-Putterman formulation for the theory of relativistic viscous superfluids suffers from the same instability and acausality issues as the relativistic Navier-Stokes equation for normal fluids when written in the formulations of Eckart or Landau and Lifshitz. We show that conditions to ensure stability and causality can be satisfied with judicious redefinitions of the hydrodynamic variables. The conditions we obtain hold at non-zero superfluid velocity as well.

Abstract:We study topological modes in relativistic hydrodynamics by weakly breaking the conservation of energy momentum tensor. Several systems have been found to have topologically nontrivial crossing nodes in the spectrum of hydrodynamic modes and some of them are only topologically nontrivial with the protection of reflection symmetries in two directions. The nontrivial topology for all these systems is further confirmed from a calculation of the topological invariant. Associated transport properties and second order effects have also been studied for these systems. The nonconservation terms of the energy momentum tensor could come from an external effective symmetric tensor matter field or a gravitational field which could be generated by a specific noninertial reference frame transformation from the original inertial reference frame. Finally we introduce a possible holographic realization of one of these systems. We propose a new method to calculate the holographic Ward identities for the energy momentum tensor without calculating out all components of the Green functions and match the Ward identities of both sides.

Abstract:We introduce a technique to solve numerically the relativistic Euler's equations in scenarios with spherical symmetry using the standard Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics method in cartesian coordinates. This implementation allow us to increase the resolution of the simulations in order to obtain accurate results. We test our implementation studying the evolution of a perfect fluid in a blast wave configuration in a fixed space-time . The technique can be easily generalized to axial symmetric problems.

Abstract:Fractonic superfluids are exotic phases of matter in which bosons are subject to mobility constraints, resulting in features beyond those of conventional superfluids. These exotic phases arise from the spontaneous breaking of higher-rank symmetry (HRS) in many-body systems with higher-moment conservation, such as dipoles, quadrupoles, and angular moments. The aim of this paper is to introduce exciting developments on the theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking in such systems, which we refer to as ``many-fracton systems''. More specifically, we introduce exciting progress on general aspects of HRS, minimal model construction, realization of symmetry-breaking ground states, order parameter, off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), Noether currents with continuity equations, Gross-Pitaevskii equations, quantum fluctuations, Goldstone modes, specific heat, generalized Mermin-Wagner theorem, critical current, Landau criterion, symmetry defects, and Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT)-like physics, hydrodynamics, and dipolar Hubbard model realization. This paper is concluded with several future directions.

Abstract:We show how causal relativistic Navier-Stokes equations arise from the relativistic Boltzmann equation: the causality is preserved via a judicious choice of the zero modes of the collision operator. A completely analogous procedure may be used to extract causal hydrodynamics from the fluid-gravity correspondence: again, causality of the hydrodynamic equations is preserved by a suitable choice of zero modes of the corresponding differential operators in the bulk. We give examples of zero modes which give rise to causal hydrodynamic equations for non-conformal fluids with a conserved U(1) global symmetry current.

Revealing Noncanonical Hamiltonian Structures in Relativistic Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:We present the noncanonical Hamiltonian structure of the relativistic Euler equations for a perfect fluid in Minkowski spacetime. By identifying the system's noncanonical Poisson bracket and Hamiltonian, we show that relativistic fluid flows preserve helicity and enstrophy as conserved quantities in three-dimensional and two-dimensional cases, respectively. This holds when the fluid follows a relativistic $\gamma$-barotropic equation of state, which generalizes the classical barotropic condition. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these conserved quantities are Casimir invariants associated with the noncanonical Poisson structure. These findings open new avenues for applying Hamiltonian theory to the study of astrophysical fluids and relativistic plasmas.

Abstract:We show that volume-preserving diffeomorphisms and the chemical shift symmetry defining relativistic Lagrangian ideal fluid dynamics can be derived as an emerging symmetry when ergodicity is assumed to apply locally in a way that is invariant under smooth spacetime foliations. This can be used as a way to derive the ideal hydrodynamic limit in a strongly coupled but strongly fluctuating medium. The Hydrohedron: Bootstrapping Relativistic Hydrodynamics

Abstract:As an effective theory, relativistic hydrodynamics is fixed by symmetries up to a set of transport coefficients. A lot of effort has been devoted to explicit calculations of these coefficients. Here we propose a shift in perspective: we deploy bootstrap techniques to rule out theories that are inconsistent with microscopic causality. What remains is a universal convex geometry in the space of transport coefficients, which we call the hydrohedron. The landscape of all consistent theories necessarily lie inside or on the edges of the hydrohedron. We analytically construct cross-sections of the hydrohedron corresponding to bounds on transport coefficients that appear in sound and diffusion modes for theories without stochastic fluctuations.

Dissipative fracton superfluids

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of hydrodynamic theories for superfluids with dipole symmetry. Taking diffusion as an example, we systematically construct a hydrodynamic framework that incorporates an intrinsic dipole degree of freedom in analogy to spin density in micropolar (spinful) fluids. Subsequently, we study a dipole condensed phase and propose a model that captures the spontaneous breaking of the $U(1)$ charge. The theory explains the role of the inverse Higgs constraint for this class of theories, and naturally generates the gapless field. Next, we introduce finite temperature theory using the Hamiltonian formalism and study the hydrodynamics of ideal fracton superfluids. Finally, we postulate a derivative counting scheme and incorporate dissipative effects using the method of irreversible thermodynamics. We verify the consistency of the dispersion relations and argue that our counting is systematic.

Abstract:The conventional theory of hydrodynamics describes the evolution in time of chaotic many-particle systems from local to global equilibrium. In a quantum integrable system, local equilibrium is characterized by a local generalized Gibbs ensemble or equivalently a local distribution of pseudomomenta. We study time evolution from local equilibria in such models by solving a certain kinetic equation, the "Bethe-Boltzmann" equation satisfied by the local pseudomomentum density. Explicit comparison with density matrix renormalization group time evolution of a thermal expansion in the XXZ model shows that hydrodynamical predictions from smooth initial conditions can be remarkably accurate, even for small system sizes. Solutions are also obtained in the Lieb-Liniger model for free expansion into vacuum and collisions between clouds of particles, which model experiments on ultracold one-dimensional Bose gases.
