Abstract:A frequency-domain finite element method (FEM) with the low-storage matrix-free feature is proposed for efficient analysis of electromagnetic fields. As opposed to conventional frequency-domain FEM which requires the matrix assembly before solving, the proposed matrix-free algorithm avoids the assembly and storage of the global matrix. In this approach, the global sparse matrix-vector (SpMV) multiplication is decomposed into element-wise matrix-vector (MV) multiplications. Additionally, the sum factorization technique is applied on tensorial basis functions to reduce the complexities of local MV multiplications. The numerical results demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm over traditional FEM in terms of both memory and time consumption. Besides, the improvement is more profound when higher-order basis functions are considered. A speedup of more than 10 against matrix-assembled solvers is observed. Given that memory transfer is bounded more than computation resources in modern supercomputer architectures, our algorithm is more friendly to high-performance computing platforms.

Abstract:Computation electromagnetic is an important research field of electromagnetic fields and microwave technology subjects. In this paper, the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is extended to solve one type of electromagnetic field problems-electrostatic field problems. Based on Laplace equation of electrostatic field, the derivations and solutions of SBFEM equations for both bounded and unbounded domain problems are expressed in details, and the solution for the inclusion of prescribed potential along the side-faces of bounded domain is also presented in details, then the total charges on the side-faces can be semi-analytically solved. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are illustrated by numerical examples of electromagnetic field problems with complicated field domains, potential singularities, inhomogeneous media and open boundaries. In comparison with analytic solution method and other numerical methods, the results show that the present method has strong ability to resolve potential field singularities analytically by choosing the scaling centre at the singular point, has the inherent advantage of solving the open boundary problems without truncation boundary condition, has efficient application to the problems with inhomogeneous media by placing the scaling centre in the bi-material interfaces, and produces more accurate solution than conventional numerical methods with far less number of degrees of freedom. The method in electromagnetic field calculation can have broad application prospects.

A Novel Pseudospectral Time Domain Method for Complex EM Simulations

Abstract:A novel pseudospectral time-domain algorithm, combined with the discontinuous Galerkin method, is presented to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation in large-scale complex media. Compared with the edge-/curl-conforming-based finite element method, arbitrary high-order basis function is easily achieved by utilizing the nodal basis functions; compared with the conventional pseudospectral time-domain algorithm, this new algorithm is strictly long-time stable (>300 central periods) for non-orthogonal elements, in terms of both mathematical analysis and numerical experiments. In addition, both h- and p-adaptivity are supported by using the nonconformal-mesh-based domain decomposition method. Numerical examples include 3D full-waveform modeling of 5G electromagnetic pulse propagation in a bedroom (hundreds of wavelengths in each direction) and fully anisotropic heterogenous head-electromagnetics interaction.

Abstract:This paper presents a development of the boundary contour method (BCM) for magneto-electro-elastic media. Firstly, the divergence-free of the integrand of the magneto-electro-elastic boundary element is proved. Secondly, the boundary contour method formulations are obtained by introducing linear shape functions and Green's functions (Computers & Structures, 82(2004):1599-1607) for magneto-electro-elastic media and using the rigid body motion solution to regularize the BCM and avoid computation of the corner tensor. The BCM is applied to the problem of magneto-electro-elastic media. Finally, numerical solutions for illustrative examples are compared with exact ones and those of the conventional boundary element method (BEM). The numerical results of the BCM coincide very well with the exact solution, and the feasibility and efficiency of the method are verified.

Abstract:The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) is a semi-analytical numerical method, which models an analysis domain by a small number of large-sized subdomains and discretises subdomain boundaries only. In a subdomain, all fields of state variables including displacement, stress, velocity and acceleration are semi-analytical, and the kinetic energy, strain energy and energy error are all integrated semi-analytically. These advantages are taken in this study to develop a posteriori h -hierarchical adaptive SBFEM for transient elastodynamic problems using a mesh refinement procedure which subdivides subdomains. Because only a small number of subdomains are subdivided, mesh refinement is very simple and efficient, and mesh mapping to transfer state variables from an old mesh to a new one is also very simple but accurate. Two 2D examples with stress wave propagation were modelled. The results show that the developed method is capable of capturing propagation of steep stress regions and calculating accurate dynamic responses, using only a fraction of degrees of freedom required by adaptive finite element method.

Abstract:To alleviate the requirement on excessive computational resources using numerical methods such as finite element analysis in solving large high frequency 3-D eddy current problems, a novel iterative methodology to deal with periodic boundary conditions is proposed. Its implementation in finite element method is also explained in details. Numerical results on the computations of 3-D eddy current fields of a cold crucible are used to demonstrate the robustness and feasibility as well as the advantages of the proposed methodology in solving practical 3-D eddy current field problems.

Abstract:This paper proposes an application of the boundary-element method to two-dimensional electromagnetic field problems. By this method, calculations can be performed using far fewer nodes than by the finite-element method, and unbounded field problems are easily treated without special additional consideration. In addition, the results obtained have fairly good accuracy. In this paper, analyzing procedures of electromagnetic field problems by the boundary-element method, under special conditions, are proposed and several examples are investigated.

Abstract:A refinement algorithm for electromagnetic field computations using a combination of finite element and meshless methods is introduced. Bridging scales are used to separate the finite element and meshless shape functions to make the refinement hierarchical and to uphold the mathematical properties such as consistency and linear independence for all the bases. To facilitate the application of the proposed algorithm, details about the node addition, requirements for the node distribution, and relationships between the finite element and meshless shape functions, as well as the determination of the stop criterion are also fully addressed. Primary numerical results are reported to demonstrate and validate the applicability and advantages of the proposed algorithm over traditional ones.

Abstract:Electromagnetic field problems are often formulated as boundary value problems in unbounded regions. For this reason, the application of conventional numerical methods, such as the finite element method, is difficult. The paper describes a new technique to circumvent this difficulty. The technique is based on the reduction of the field equations in unbounded space to equivalent boundary Galerkin's criterion. Such criterion can be combined with the volume Galerkin's criterion for regions occupied by conductors. A new quasi-finite-element discretization based on the coupled boundary/volume Galerkin's criterion is presented.

Abstract:The scaled boundary finite element method (FEM) is a recently developed semi-analytical numerical approach combining advantages of the FEM and the boundary element method. Although for elastostatics, the governing homogeneous differential equations in the radial co-ordinate can be solved analytically without much effort, an analytical solution to the non-homogeneous differential equations in frequency domain for elastodynamics has so far only been obtained by a rather tedious series-expansion procedure. This paper develops a much simpler procedure to obtain such an analytical solution by increasing the number of power series in the solution until the required accuracy is achieved. The procedure is applied to an extensive study of the steady-state frequency response of a square plate subjected to harmonic excitation. Comparison of the results with those obtained using ABAQUS shows that the new method is as accurate as a detailed finite element model in calculating steady-state responses for a wide range of frequencies using only a fraction of the degrees of freedom required in the latter. A Novel Conversion Technique from Nodal to Edge Finite Element Data Structure for Electromagnetic Analysis

Abstract:Standard nodal finite elements in electromagnetic analysis have well-known limitation of occurrence of spurious solution. In order to circumvent the problem, a penalty function method or a regularization method is used with potential formulation. These methods solve the problem partially by pushing the spurious mode to the higher end of the spectrum. But it fails to capture singular eigenvalues in case of the problem domains with sharp edges and corners. To circumvent this limitation, edge elements have been developed for electromagnetic analysis where degree of freedoms are along the edges. But most of the preprocessors develop complex meshes in nodal framework. In this work, we have developed a novel technique to convert nodal data structure to edge data structure for electromagnetic analysis. We have explained the conversion algorithm in details, mentioning associated complexities with relevant examples. The performance of the developed algorithm has been demonstrated extensively with several examples.

Abstract:In this work, we derived the three-dimensional scaled boundary finite element formulation for thermal conduction problems. By introducing Wachspress shape functions, we proposed a novel polyhedral scaled boundary finite element method (PSBFEM) to address thermal conduction problems. The proposed method effectively addresses the challenges associated with complex geometries by integrating the polyhedral mesh and the octree mesh. The presented formulation handles both steady-state and transient thermal conduction analyses. Through a series of numerical examples, the accuracy and convergence of the proposed method were validated. The results demonstrate that mesh refinement leads to superior accuracy for the PSBFEM compared to the FEM. Moreover, Polyhedral elements provide an effective and efficient approach for complex simulations that substantially reduces computational costs.

Abstract:In nodal based finite element method (FEM), degrees of freedom are associated with the nodes of the element whereas, for edge FEM, degrees of freedom are assigned to the edges of the element. Edge element is constructed based on Whitney spaces. Nodal elements impose both tangential and normal continuity of vector or scalar fields across interface boundaries. But in edge elements only tangential continuity is imposed across interface boundaries, which is consistent with electromagnetic field problems. Therefore, the required continuities in the electromagnetic analysis are directly obtained with edge elements, whereas in nodal elements they are attained through potential formulations. Hence, while using edge elements, field variables are directly calculated, but with nodal elements, post-processing is required to obtain the field variables from the potentials. Here, we present the finite element formulations with the edge element as well as with nodal elements. Thereafter, we have demonstrated the relative performances of different nodal and edge elements through a series of examples. All possible complexities like curved boundaries, non-convex domains, sharp corners, non-homogeneous domains have been addressed in those examples. The robustness of edge elements in predicting the singular eigen values for the domains with sharp edges and corners is evident in the analysis. A better coarse mesh accuracy has been observed for all the edge elements as compared to the respective nodal elements. Edge elements are also not susceptible to mesh distortion.

Abstract:The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a widely recognized technique for solving boundary value problems in the design and analysis of RF (Radio Frequency) components, such as waveguides. In the process of analyzing such structures using FEM, the traditionally infinite analysis domain is required to be truncated to a finite domain. This necessitates the incorporation of appropriate artificial boundaries to truncate the analysis domain, which should ideally occupy the smallest possible region. Renowned boundary conditions in this context include ABC (Absorbing Boundary Conditions), WPBC (Wave Port Boundary Conditions), and PML (Perfectly Matched Layers), each presenting its own set of advantages and drawbacks. This paper applies these boundary conditions in the analysis of a rectangular waveguide containing inhomogeneity, leveraging a tailored FEM solution implemented in MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory). The accuracy of the FEM solutions is meticulously compared and validated against results from the commercial electromagnetic software HFSS, affirming the robustness and reliability of the findings. Additionally, the proficiencies of the CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) MATH library and kernel function within the CUDA Toolkit are harnessed to execute parallel analysis of the linear systems formulated by the FEM. A detailed performance comparison between MATLAB’s backslash operator and the CUDA-accelerated approach is conducted.

Abstract:The scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) developed by Wolf and Song has shown certain parallels to the finite element method (FEM) and boundary element method (BEM). Because of its semi‐analytical nature, SBFEM is particularly suitable for the analysis of wave propagation in unbounded domains. This paper makes a certain modification of the standard SBFEM. A new idea of scaling surface instead of a scaling center is introduced to formulate the governing SBFE equations for the analysis of wave propagation in multilayered half‐space, which leads to simplifying the modeling and saving considerably the computational effort. In addition, by employing the proposed approach, some problems encountered in engineering practice, which are difficult to deal with by the conventional SBFEM, for example, 3D foundation impedance on half‐space with irregular geographical features, can be effectively solved. The proposed approach also helps to simplify the solution of shell structures. Numerical examples are provided to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach.
