Abstract:The isomorphism problem for infinite finitely presented groups is probably the hardest among standard algorithmic problems in group theory. Classes of groups where it has been completely solved are nilpotent groups, hyperbolic groups, and limit groups. In this short paper, we address the problem of isomorphism to particular groups, including free groups. We also address the algorithmic problem of embedding a finitely presented group in a given limit group.

Abstract:We obtain an explicit description of the endomorphisms of free-abelian by free groups together with a characterization of when they are injective and surjective. As a consequence we see that free-abelian by free groups are Hopfian and not coHopfian, and we investigate the isomorphism problem and the Brinkmann Problem for this family of groups. In particular, we prove that the isomorphism problem (undecidable in general) is decidable when restricted to finite actions, and that the Brinkmann Problem is decidable both for monomorphisms and automorphisms.

Namely, we construct an example of two bi-Lipschitz equivalent finitely generated groups such that one of them is solvable and free of torsion while the other is neither virtually solvable nor virtually free of torsion.

Abstract:The Tits alternative states that a finitely generated matrix group either contains a nonabelian free subgroup $F_2$, or it is virtually solvable. This paper considers two decision problems in virtually solvable matrix groups: the Identity Problem (does a given finitely generated subsemigroup contain the identity matrix?), and the Group Problem (is a given finitely generated subsemigroup a group?). We show that both problems are decidable in virtually solvable matrix groups over the field of algebraic numbers $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. Our proof also extends the decidability result for nilpotent groups by Bodart, Ciobanu, Metcalfe and Shaffrir, and the decidability result for metabelian groups by Dong (STOC'24). Since the Identity Problem and the Group Problem are known to be undecidable in matrix groups containing $F_2 \times F_2$, our result significantly reduces the decidability gap for both decision problems.

Abstract:We deal with an unsolved problem in group theory (question 19.35 of Kourovka Notebook). It asks whether, given a finite group G and a factorization <math>|G|=a1⋯ak</math> one can always find subsets <math>A1,…,Ak</math> such that <math>|A1|=a1,…,|Ak|=ak</math> and <math>G=A1⋯Ak.</math> The case k = 2 is of special interest. We prove that the answer is positive for all finite supersolvable (and so abelian) groups. However, G. Bergman has recently given a counterexample to the question for the case k = 3. Regarding the special case k = 2, at first, we prove that the statement is true for all finite solvable groups, and groups such that for every divisor d of their order, there is a subgroup of order or index d. Thereafter, by proving an extension theorem we show that the answer is positive if it is true for all simple groups with no subgroup of prime index. Also, we give some other theorems and criteria, for checking the property and state a question about some candidates for probable counterexamples. We end by noting some related connections, questions and problems about the topic.

Abstract:We prove that the universal solenoid is the generic (in the sense of Baire category) connected compact metrizable abelian group. We also settle the dual problem in the sense of Pontryagin duality: $(\mathbb{Q},+)$, which is the dual of the universal solenoid, is the generic countably infinite torsion-free abelian group.

Abstract:We show that it is undecidable whether a system of linear equations over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$ admit solutions where a specified subset of variables take value in the set of monomials $\{X^z \mid z \in \mathbb{Z}\}$. In particular, we construct a finitely presented $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$-module, where it is undecidable whether a linear equation $X^{z_1} \boldsymbol{f}_1 + \cdots + X^{z_n} \boldsymbol{f}_n = \boldsymbol{f}_0$ has solutions $z_1, \ldots, z_n \in \mathbb{Z}$. This contrasts the decidability of the case $n = 1$, which can be deduced from Noskov's Lemma. We apply this result to settle a number of problems in computational group theory. We show that it is undecidable whether a system of equations has solutions in the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, providing a negative answer to an open problem of Kharlampovich, López and Miasnikov (2020). We show that there exists a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group in which the problem of solving a single quadratic equation is undecidable. We also construct a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group, different to that of Mishchenko and Treier (2017), in which the Knapsack Problem is undecidable. In contrast, we show that the problem of Coset Intersection is decidable in all finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic groups.

Effective equation solving, constraints and growth in virtually abelian groups

Abstract:In this paper we study the satisfiability and solutions of group equations when combinatorial, algebraic and language-theoretic constraints are imposed on the solutions. We show that the solutions to equations with length, lexicographic order, abelianisation or context-free constraints added, can be effectively produced in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. Crucially, we translate each of the constraints above into a rational set in an effective way, and so reduce each problem to solving equations with rational constraints, which is decidable and well understood in virtually abelian groups. A byproduct of our results is that the growth series of a virtually abelian group, with respect to any generating set and any weight, is effectively computable. This series is known to be rational by a result of Benson, but his proof is non-constructive.

Abstract:We show that a non-solvable, torsion-free, virtually solvable group $S$ must have Hirsch length $h(S)\geq10$. If $h(S)<14$ then $A_5$ is the only simple factor. If $S$ is virtually nilpotent and $h(S)\leq14$ then its Fitting subgroup has nilpotency class $\leq3$. (There are virtually abelian examples with $h(S)=15$, and this is known to be best possible for such groups.)

Abstract:Giving a condition for the the amenability of groups, Rosenblatt and Willis, first introduced the concept of configuration. From the beginning of the theory, the question whether the concept of configuration equivalence coincides with the concept of group isomorphism was posed. We negatively answer this open question by introducing two non-isomorphic, solvable and hence amenable groups which are configuration equivalent. Also, we will study some types of subgroups in configuration equivalent groups. In particular, we will prove this conjecture, due to Rosenblatt and Willis, that configuration equivalent groups, both include the free non-Abelian group of same rank or not. Finally, we prove that two-sided equivalent groups have same class numbers.

Abstract:It is shown that there is $N$ such that there is no algorithm to decide for identities in at most $N$ variables validity in the class of finite modular lattices. This is based on Slobodskoi's result that the Restricted Word Problem is unsolvable for the class of finite groups and relies on Freese's technique of capturing group presentations within free modular lattices.

Abstract:Motivated by the study of the conjugacy problem for outer automorphism of free groups, we develop the algorithmic theory of the free-by-cyclic group produced by unipotent linearly growing automorphisms of f.g. free groups. We compute canonical splittings of these suspensions as well as their subgroups. We compute their automorphism groups. We show that this class of suspensions is effectively coherent. We solve the mixed Whitehead problem in these suspensions and show that their subgroups all satisfy the Minkowski property, i.e. that torsion in their outer automorphism group is faithfully represented in some computable finite quotients. An application of our results is a solution to the conjugacy problem for outer automorphisms of free groups whose polynomially growing part is unipotent linear.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and $\sigma_1(G)=\frac{1}{|G|}\sum_{H\leq G}\,|H|$. Under some restrictions on the number of conjugacy classes of (non-normal) maximal subgroups of $G$, we prove that if $\sigma_1(G)<\frac{117}{20}\,$, then $G$ is solvable. This partially solves an open problem posed in \cite{9}.

Abstract:Stallings folding theory is modified, using double coset representatives, and to applied to the study of subgroups of amalgamated products of finite rank free groups. As a first application the subgroup membership problem for such groups is shown to be decidable. An algorithm for this problem is constructed and its complexity is analysed. Groups in this class are also shown to possess the Howson property.
