Abstract:Regulation of photosynthesis rates is one of the key ways to increase crop yields. Carbon dots (CDs), which are low-toxity and biocompatible optical nanomaterials, can be easily prepared and are ideal for improving photosynthesis efficiency. In this study, nitrogen-doped CDs (CNDs) with a fluorescent quantum yield of 0.36 were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method. These CNDs can convert a part of ultraviolet light in solar energy to blue light (emission peak at 410 nm) that can be utilized in photosynthesis and that overlaps with the optical absorption spectrum of chloroplasts in the blue light zone. Consequently, chloroplasts can pick up photons excited by the CNDs and transfer them to the photosynthetic system in the form of electrons, thereby accelerating the photoelectron transport rate. These behaviors can reduce ultraviolet light stress on wheat seedlings and improve the efficiency of electron capture and transfer from chloroplasts through optical energy conversion. As a result, various photosynthetic indices and biomass of wheat seedlings are improved. Cytotoxicity experiments have showed that CNDs within a certain concentration range almost do not affect cell survival.
Effects of nitrogen application rates on antioxidant contents and antioxidative activities in Chinese cabbage

Abstract:A pot experiment was carried out to study the effects of nitrogen application rates(0,150 and 300 mg N·kg-1 soil) on antioxidant contents and antioxidative activities in two cultivars(Shuzhouqing and Dongfei) of Chinese cabbage(Brassica chinensis L.).Results show that fresh and dry weights of shoots were markedly increased by increasing nitrogen application rate from 0 mg N·kg-1 to 150 mg N·kg-1,and were significantly decreased with further increasing nitrogen application rate.Nitrate contents in leaf and petiole increased with increasing N application rate.Higher nitrate contents were observed in cultivar of Shuzhouqing than that of Dongfei.Highest contents of ascorbic acid,total phenolics,flavonoid,and DPPH(1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging rate and FRAP(ferric reducing antioxidant power) value were recorded in the control(0 mg N·kg-1).The contents of ascorbic acid,total phenolics and flavonoids and antioxidative activities were markedly decreased by the increases of nitrogen application rate,while GSH was not affected.However,the highest antioxidant accumulation were founded at the application rate of 150 mg N·kg-1 soil.Therefore,the rate of 150 mg N·kg-1 soil might be the optimal nitrogen application rate for production of both high-yield and high-quality vegetable under this experimental condition.
Effects of Multifunctional Cerium-Doped Carbon Dots on Photosynthetic Capacity and Nutritional Quality of Lettuce

Abstract:As biocompatible water-soluble nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have attracted the interest of researchers in agricultural production. In this work, cerium-doped carbon dots (Ce-CDs) have been prepared as a water-soluble carbon nano-fertilizer using a one-pot hydrothermal method. The effects on lettuce yield and quality are investigated. The application of lower concentrations of (50-150 mg·L-1) Ce-CDs all contributes to lettuce yield and quality enhancement. The 100 mg·L-1 of Ce-CDs demonstrating the most significant effect, increasing biomass by about 83.3%, promoting the accumulation of soluble sugars (87.5%) and soluble proteins (52.3%). Further investigation reveals that Ce-CDs can promote electron transfer rate (33.35%), photosynthetic activity (30.28%), photoconversion efficiency (37.90%) and Rubisco activity (37.38%), and have a promoting effect on Glutamine synthetase (GS, 3.10%) and Glutamate synthase (GOGAT, 10.09%) activities. Regarding the net photosynthetic rate (54.99%), Ce-CDs elevate about and induce stomatal opening and promoted nutrient accumulation. This work not only evaluates the effects of rare earth-doped CDs as nano-fertilizers on plants but also provides strong technical support for the application of nano-fertilizers in practical production and life science.

Promotion Effect of Nitrogen-Doped Functional Carbon Nanodots on the Early Growth Stage of Plants

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to study the effects of nitrogen-doped functional carbon nanodots (N-FCNs) on the early growth stage of plants. Hydrosoluble and biocompatible N-FCNs with high content of available N (ammonium and amino groups) and carboxyl groups are synthesized by a super green electrochemical method. N-FCNs universally express good eurytopic influence on different species of plants by inducing seeds germination, promoting root development, biomass accumulation, root cell length, chlorophyll level and transpiration of young seedlings. When functional carbon nanodots without N doping (FCNs) promote tomato and corn seeds germination rate by 92.4% and 76.2% maximally, N-FCNs could further improve the germination rate by about 17.0% and 25.5%. N-FCNs can even significantly raise the green vegetable (pakchoi) yield to 2.1 and 1.4 times on the 18th and 30th day. Leaf chlorophyll content is also increased to 1.36 and 1.55 times compared with FCNs treated group and the control group, respectively. The promotion effect of the nanodots is apparently depended on their composition, nanostructure, as well as plant species and age. Nanoscale structure and abundant hydrophilic functional groups can enable N-FCNs regulating the seed germination and plant growth by promoting the uptake and transportation of water and nutrients. The accumulation and transport of N-FCNs are investigated, which reveals N-FCNs are friendly to cells because they are absorbed and transported through nonprotoplast pathway in plant. As a result, N-FCNs have great potential for horticulture application as a biocompatible nano-medium to regulate both metabolism and early development of plants.

Abstract:Herein, greenhouse experiments were designed to reveal the role of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) in enhancing maize drought tolerance. Two humidity conditions were created: adequate watering (soil moisture, 75%) and drought stress (soil moisture, 35%). Corn seedlings were harvested after spraying the N-CD solution (5 mg·L–1) on maize leaves for 5 days. The results indicated that foliar application of N-CDs increased the net photosynthesis rate (28.6%) of maize, and the fresh and dry weights of roots and shoots increased by 224.5, 360.0, 230.8, and 63.3% under drought stress, respectively. N-CDs showed high reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging activity, resulting in enhanced superoxide dismutase activity (26.7%) and reduced malondialdehyde enzyme activity (18.9%). Besides, N-CDs could be used as light-harvesting materials to improve the light utilization efficiency, upregulate psbA gene expression (81.7-fold), and promote fast synthesis of the D1 protein, which could repair photosystem II under drought stress. Therefore, foliar-sprayed N-CDs could improve photosynthesis through multiple pathways under drought stress: light harvesting, photoprotection, and light repairing. Then, N-CD exposure reduced the corn yield loss under drought by nearly 30% compared with those of the control groups in a full life cycle study. Therefore, this study found for the first time that N-CD-enabled nanoagriculture could ensure crop growth and yield under drought stress, which would be important for global crop cultivation and a promising alternative to deal with the global climate change.

Abstract:The application of carbon dot (CD) nanomaterials in the agricultural field has shown unique advantages, among which preparing an efficient CD material is the key to its popularization and applications. In this work, a biomass CD material (CDs-gl&al) that can be used for efficient improvement of plant photosynthesis was prepared. Compared with the control, the electron transport rate and actual photosynthetic efficiency of lettuce leaves treated with CDs-gl&al increased by 43.5 and 40.1%, respectively, and the contents of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b increased by 23.9 and 21.0%, respectively, significantly enhancing the photosynthetic capacity of lettuce. After being absorbed by leaves, CDs-gl&al was mainly transported to other parts through leaf veins. In the assay of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, CDs-gl&al was able to increase the SOD content and decrease the MDA level in the leaves, thus enhancing the lettuce resistance and improving the growth status of lettuce. In experiments with fruit trees, CDs-gl&al had a similar effect in promoting photosynthesis in fruit tree leaves. The coculture experiments with various cells such as mouse small intestine epithelial cells proved that this material had good biosafety. CDs-gl&al would help to further promote the application of CDs in the agricultural field.

Abstract:Soil salinity seriously affects the utilization of farmland and threatens the crop production. Here, a selenium-nitrogen-co-doped carbon dots was developed, which increased rice seedling growth and alleviated its inhibition by salt stress by foliar spraying. The treatment activated Ca2+ and jasmonic acid signaling pathways and increased iron homeostasis, antioxidant defense, and cell wall development of rice seedlings. It could be used to increase crop resistance to environmental stress.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is considered as an emerging effective means to augment plant photosynthesis. However, there is still a lot of work to be done in this field. Here, we applied the upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) on lettuce leaves and found that the UCNPs were able to transport into the lettuce body and colocalize with the chloroplasts. It was proved that UCNPs could harvest the near-infrared light of sunlight and increase the electron transfer rate in the photosynthesis process, thus increasing the photosynthesis rate. The gene expression analysis showed that more than 90% of gene expression in photosynthesis was upregulated. After spraying the UCNP solution on the leaves of lettuce and placing the lettuce under sunlight for 1 week, the wet/dry weight of the leaves increased by 53.33% and 45.71%, respectively. This nanoengineering of light-harvesting UCNPs may have great potential for applications in agriculture.

Abstract:As the cadmium-free semiconductor quantum dots, ZnO quantum dots (ZnO QDs) have wide potential applications in agriculture. However, the effects of ZnO quantum dots on crop growth and nutritional quality have not been fully studied. In this work, the lettuce was sprayed with different concentrations of ZnO QDs from 50 to 500 mg·L-1 to evaluate their influence on lettuce antioxidant, biomass, and nutritional quality. The results showed that ZnO QDs existed in the lettuce in the form of Zn2+. Lettuce treated with 500 mg·L-1 ZnO QDs would produce a large amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which adversely affected the absorption of nutrients, soluble protein content, and chlorophyll content, thus reducing plant biomass. When the concentrations range from 50 to 200 mg·L-1, the antioxidant enzyme systems of lettuce were triggered to counteract the damage caused by excessive ROS. Moreover, ZnO QDs at this level promoted Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and B absorption and accumulation; increased soluble sugar content; and improved the lettuce biomass and nutritional quality.

Abstract:The use of nitrogen (N) fertilizers increases crop yield, but the accumulation of residual N in agricultural soils poses significant environmental risks. Improving the N use efficiency (NUE) of crops can help reduce N pollution. While nanomaterials have been shown to enhance crop agronomic traits, more research is needed to clarify the regulatory mechanisms involved. In this study, foliar spraying of carbon dots (CDs, 1 mg mL −1 ) derived from Salvia miltiorrhiza increased the activity of plasma membrane H + -ATPase in Arabidopsis thaliana roots, promoting the uptake, transport, and assimilation of NO 3 − and NH 4 + . The upregulation of N metabolism-related genes, such as AtAMTs and AtNRTs , was also observed in A. thaliana roots. Transcriptome analysis suggested that this regulatory effect is mediated by the shoot-to-root mobile polypeptide CEPD1 (C-terminally encoded peptide DOWNSTREAM 1) signaling pathway. Additionally, foliar application of CDs increased the NUE of sweetpotato ( Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) from 2.5% to 8.1%. The upregulation of genes such as CEPD1 in leaves was observed following CDs application under different N conditions. Finally, foliar spraying of CDs significantly increased field yield and enhanced tolerance to low N stress in sweetpotato. Overall, this study demonstrated that foliar application of CDs improved NUE in plants through CEPD1-dependent signaling.

Abstract:The regulation of plant growth and developmental processes by carbon dots (CDs) has been frequently reported. However, little is known about how CDs are related to the yield and nutritional quality. In this study, carbon dots, obtained by the hydrothermal method with l-cysteine and glucose, were systematically characterized and applied to lettuces and tomatoes in a hydroponic nutrient solution to comprehensively investigate the mechanism of regulation of plant development by CDs. We found that CDs could accelerate seed germination, promote root and hypocotyl elongation of seedlings by activating the expression of genes encoding aquaporin proteins, and enhance the yield and nutritional qualities of mature plants by promoting the absorption of mineral elements together with the enhancement of photosynthesis. Abstract:Improving crop yields by increasing fertilizer-use-efficiency is essential to minimizing agriculture's environmental impact. Water-dispersible carbon nanomaterials (CNM) have emerged as an innovative material to improve crop yields by increasing nutrient utilization and enhancing crop physiological processes. Abstract:Nanotechnology and biotechnology offer promising avenues for bolstering food security through the facilitation of soil nitrogen (N) sequestration and the reduction of nitrate leaching. Nonetheless, a comprehensive and mechanistic evaluation of their effectiveness and safety remains unclear. In this study, a soil remediation strategy employing nano-Fe 3 O 4 and straw in N-contaminated soil was developed to elucidate N retention mechanisms via diverse metagenomics techniques. The findings revealed that subsoil amended with straw, particularly in conjunction with nano-Fe 3 O 4 , significantly increased subsoil N content (53.2%) and decreased nitrate concentration (74.6%) in leachate. Furthermore, the enrichment of functional genes associated with N-cycling, sulfate, nitrate, and iron uptake, along with chemotaxis, and responses to environmental stimuli or microbial collaboration, effectively mitigates nitrate leaching while enhancing soil N sequestration. This study introduces a pioneering approach utilizing nanomaterials in soil remediation, thereby offering the potential for the cultivation of safe vegetables in high N input greenhouse agriculture.

Abstract:The use of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) in agriculture to boost crop production provides alternative solutions to meet ever-increasing food demand. However, insufficient documentation of optimal application methods of CNPs present significant hurdles to its application in agriculture. To clarify how foliar spray and soil drench of CNPs affect corn growth and nutrient uptake, plant growth parameters and soil quality attributes were measured. The application of CNPs significantly increased plant height (21.4%), dry biomass of shoots (27.1%) and roots (56.6%), plant uptake of N (133%), P (41%), K (192%), Ca (209%), Mg (106%), Fe (59.6%), Mn (155%), Cu (105%), Zn (117%), and altered photosynthetic parameters and soil chemical and biochemical properties. Overall, the stimulatory effects of CNPs varied with application rates and methods, and foliar spray of CNPs at 400 mg L-1 and soil drench at 200 mg kg(-1) were most efficient in improving corn growth and soil quality. Principal component analysis (PCA) indicated corn growth parameters were positively influenced by CNPs regardless of application methods, while soil quality attributes were mainly positively affected only by soil drench. The stimulated corn growth could be attributed to enhanced nutrient uptake, elevated photosynthesis, and improved soil quality. This study provided a comparative evaluation of CNPs on plant growth and soil quality improvement and generated guidelines for optimizing utilization of CNPs for agricultural use.

Abstract:To assess the effects of N fertilizer ammonium sulphate nitrate [(NH4)2SO4 plus NH4NO3;ASN] with the new nitrification inhibitor (NI) 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP)(ASN+DMPP) on yield, nitrate accumulation, and quality of cabbage (Brassica campastrisL. ssp. pekinesis), two field trials were carried out under various soil-climatic conditions in Jinhua City and Xinchang County, Zhejiang Province of China in 2002.Results showed that DMPP could increase the mean yield by + 2.0 t ha-1 in Jinhua, +5.5 t ha-1 in Xinchang, decrease NO3--N content by -9.4% in Jinhua, -7.3% in Xinchang and improve nutritional quality by increasing vitamin C (VC), soluble sugar, K, Fe, Zn contents significantly.

Abstract:Soil nutrient loss, which leads to low plant utilization, has become an urgent issue. Graphene can improve soil fertilizer-holding properties given its small size effect, strong adsorption properties, and large specific surface area. Herein, different amounts of graphene were added to soil samples to study its effect on soil nutrient retention and growth of pepper seedlings. The colloidal double electric layer theory forms the basis for an analysis of variations in soil nutrient concentration through measurements of the zeta potential, which is affected by variations in ion concentrations in soil colloids. We measured the zeta potential of graphene and soil mixed colloids and found that graphene could increase the concentration of nutrient ions in soil colloids. In addition, graphene reduced the loss of nutrients; increased the contents of ammonium nitrogen, effective phosphorus, and fast-acting potassium in the soil after leaching; and enhanced the stability of soil aggregates after leaching. In addition, pepper seedlings grown under graphene treatment for 60 days outperformed seedlings grown without graphene treatment, in terms of plant height and nutrient content. This study demonstrates that the addition of graphene to soil can reduce nutrient loss and promote fertility and plant growth.

Abstract:Carbon dots are carbon-based nanoparticles, which have the characteristics of a simple preparation process, photoluminescence, biocompatibility, an adjustable surface function, water solubility, and low-level toxicity. They are widely used in biological applications, such as imaging, biosensing, photocatalysis, and molecular transfer. They have also aroused great interest among researchers in agriculture, and there has been significant progress in improving crop growth and production. This review presents the physiological functions of carbon dots for crop growth and development, photosynthesis, water and nutrient absorption, and abiotic stress resistance and their applications in improving the ecological environment and agriculture as biosensors, and future application prospects and research directions of carbon dots in agriculture.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) with gradient-changed quantum yield (QY) were prepared by regulating the graphitic N and hydroxyl group contents. Then, the QY effect of CDs on plant photosynthesis was studied using chloroplasts and rice plants. After incubation for 2 h in the dark, CDs entered into the chloroplasts and converted ultraviolet radiation to photosynthetically active radiation. By this mechanism, CD1:0.2 (300 μg·mL-1) with a moderate QY of 46.42% significantly increased the photosynthetic activity of chloroplast (200 μg·mL-1) to reduce DCPIP and ferricyanide by 43.77% and 25.45%, respectively. After spraying on rice seedlings, CD1:0.2 (300 μg·mL-1) was evenly distributed in the leaves and resulted in maximum increases in the electron transport rate and photosynthetic efficiency of photosystem II by 29.81% and 29.88%, respectively. Furthermore, CD1:0.2 significantly increased the chlorophyll content and RuBisCO carboxylase activity of rice by 64.53% and 23.39%, respectively. Consequently, significant increases were observed in the growth of CD1:0.2-treated rice, including 18.99%, 64.31%, and 61.79% increases in shoot length, dry weights of shoot and root. These findings contribute to the exploitation of solar energy and agricultural production using CDs in the future.
