Abstract:Urie Bronfenbrenner is almost certainly best known for his theoretical writings about the ecology of human development. His interest in theory was not, however, separate from his practical concerns, particularly those related to early education and care of children and the families and teachers who interact with them. From the role that he played in the development of Head Start in the United States to his final publications, we show that his theory, as it developed over the course of three phases, was both influenced by and an influencer of his practical concerns.

Abstract:The history of research on childhood socialization in the context of the family is traced through the present century. The 2 major early theories—behaviorism and psychoanalytic theory—are described. These theories declined in mid-century, under the impact of failures to find empirical support. Simple reinforcement theory was seriously weakened by work on developmental psycholinguistics, attachment, modeling, and altruism. The field turned to more domain-specific minitheories. The advent of microanalytic analyses of parent–child interaction focused attention on bidirectional processes. Views about the nature of identification and its role in socialization underwent profound change. The role of “parent as teacher” was reconceptualized (with strong influence from Vygotskian thinking). There has been increasing emphasis on the role of emotions and mutual cognitions in establishing the meaning of parent–child exchanges. The enormous asymmetry in power and competence between adults and children implies that the parent–child relationship must have a unique role in childhood socialization.

Abstract:Purpose During the past decades, China has seen a rapid urbanization which has (re)shaped not only its city landscape but also (re)created public space where children live, play, and learn. However, little research has focused on how urban public space influences young children's learning and development and how parents navigate children's development in the public space. Therefore, this research aims to study how public space influences parents’ engagement with their young children. Design/Approach/Methods This study is informed of Bronfenbrenner's Processes, Person, Context, and Time (PPCT) model which sees children's learning as complex and multilateral interactions among various stakeholders including schools, families, and environment. It employed ethnographic approach to study the interactions between children and their parents in a public playground in a Western Chinese city. Findings It found that parents realized public space had been reshaped by urbanization. While they accompanied their children to play, they actively monitored children's safety and cultivated children's physical and social development. In this process, male parents tended to contribute more than they would do in other settings. Originality/Value This study fills the gap by providing a nuanced study exploring how parents fulfill their responsibilities in an integral space of children's development which has rarely been explored.

Abstract:This investigation was an extension of Gelso's exploratory study on the relationship between Ss' attitudes toward child rearing and their perceptions of their own parents' attitudes toward them during childhood and adolescence on three dimensions (acceptance, concentration, avoidance). Ss were 188 students in introductory psychology. The general question to be studied was, “to what extent do we learn to be parents from our parents?” To an important degree, answers to this question were moderated by Ss' sex and parental status. While multiple correlational procedures vs. univariate methods tended to improve prediction, much of the variance in Ss' child rearing attitudes remained unaccounted for by their perceptions of how their parents treated them. Thus, it was concluded that to only a modest degree do people learn to be parents directly from their parents, and that relationship is a highly complex one.

Abstract:Although scholars have called for greater inclusion of children's understandings in sociological research, most studies of family roles and relationships are still adult-centered. In this paper we explore children's perceptions and evaluations of maternal and paternal roles by content-analyzing more than 3,000 essays in which children explain why their parent is the "best" mother or father. The parental qualities and activities children value and how children frame familial relationships document the salience of gender and gender processes in families. These patterns generally complement and expand upon patterns found in studies on parenthood conducted from adults' perspective. Yet some important differences exist as well, such as the relative unimportance of labor force participation in children's appraisals of their fathers and children's greater focus on mutuality when describing relations with their fathers. To assess the degree to which children Is perceptions have changed, we also compare essays from 1979-1980 with those from the early 1990s and find a clear shift in emphasis from a caretaker/provider role to a more recreational role: this shift, on closer inspection, is more applicable to fathers than to mothers. These findings underscore the need of family, gender, and social psychological research to incorporate children's perspectives.

Abstract:Parents are known to provide a lasting basis for their children's social development. Understanding parent-driven socialization is particularly relevant in adolescence, as an increasing social independence is developed. However, the relationship between key parenting styles of care and control and the microlevel expression of daily-life social interactions has been insufficiently studied. Adolescent and young adult twins and their nontwin siblings (N = 635; mean age = 16.6; age range = 14.2–21.9; 58.6% female; 79.5% in or having completed higher secondary/tertiary education; 2.8% speaking language other than Dutch at home) completed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) on parental care and control. Participants also completed a 6-day experience sampling period (10 daily beeps, mean compliance = 68.0%) to assess daily-life social interactions. Higher overall parental bonding quality (of both parents) related to more positive social experiences in daily life (e.g., belonging in company), but not to more social behaviors (e.g., being with others). Factor analysis indicated a three-factor structure of the PBI, with care, denial of psychological autonomy, and encouragement of behavioral freedom. Paternal care was uniquely predictive of better social experiences. These findings demonstrate how parenting styles may be uniquely associated with how adolescents experience their social world, with a potentially important role for fathers in particular. This complements the long-held idea of socialization through parenting by bringing it into the context of daily life and implies how both conceptualizations of social functioning and interventions aimed at alleviating social dysfunction might benefit from a stronger consideration of day-to-day social experiences. Abstract:The power of a mixed-methods approach combining anthropological and psychological theories and methods is demonstrated through the experiences of the International Study of Parents, Children, and Schools, a collaborative project involving teams of researchers from seven Western countries. The developmental niche framework of Super and Harkness proved useful for integrating multiple methods to understand the context of children’s early development at home and at school. Several parts of the study are presented as illustrations: the development and application of a common list of descriptors for coding parents’ discourse about their children; the construction of a derived etic form of a child temperament questionnaire; the discovery and exploration of ideas and practices related to parent-child co-sleeping; and the identification of cultural themes across various kinds of data. The authors conclude that a combination of anthropological and psychological methods can enrich understanding of children’s development in various cultural settings.

Abstract:This decade's literature on families with children and adolescents can be broadly organized around the implications for youth of family statuses (e.g., family structure) and family processes (e.g., parenting). These overlapping bodies of research built on past work by emphasizing the dynamic nature of family life and the intersection of families with other ecological settings, exploring race/ethnic diversity, identifying mechanisms connecting family and child/adolescent factors, and taking steps to address the threats to causal inference that have long been a problem for family studies. Continuing these trends in the future will be valuable, as will increasing the number of international comparisons, exploring “new” kinds of family diversity, and capturing the convergence of multiple statuses and processes over time.

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of parental identification and role-modeling on parenting in the next generation, with a special focus on fathers. Ninety-four fathers and 130 mothers of five-year-old children completed structured, standardized questionnaires that assessed the subject's child-rearing practices, quality of marriage and perceived parental care and control exerted by their father and mother. Analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that paternal nurturance was significantly affected by received paternal care, as well as by the quality of the subjects own marriage. Maternal nurturance was affected by received maternal care and quality of marriage. It was also found that for fathers, quality of marriage was negatively affected by received paternal control, while for mothers, quality of marriage was negatively affected by received maternal control. For both fathers and mothers, received maternal care affected the quality of marriage positively. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The Russian-born American psychologist Bronfenbrenner's bioecological perspective on human development is an ideal framework for understanding how individuals negotiate the dynamic environment and their own identities in international and intercultural education settings. However, a review of the current literature shows that most studies either adopted the earlier version of the theory (i.e., the ecological systems theory) or inadequately presented the most recent developments of the bioecological model (i.e., the process-person-context-time model). The construct of proximal processes—the primary mechanisms producing human development according to Bronfenbrenner—has seldom been explored in depth, which means the true value of bioecological theory is largely underrepresented in international and intercultural education research. This article first presents a review of studies that adopt Bronfenbrenner's theory and then offers future directions for the scope and design of international and intercultural education research.

The research problems were analyzed using Structural-Functional Theory and Psychoanalytic Theory. The findings in this study are divided into two parts. First, the parenting pattern, the process of implementing the parenting style, the single parent Father takes care and educates the child by instilling values and norms, applying discipline, giving appreciation, providing religious education, meeting the physical needs of the child. In the process of parenting, there are obstacles and expectations of parents towards their children. Second, discussing the psychological implications for children, which can be seen in terms of children's moral behavior, children's personality and socialization, as well as children's play activities.

Abstract:Cultures differ with respect to parenting strategies already during infancy. Distal parenting, i.e., face-to-face context and object stimulation, is prevalent in urban educated middle-class families of Western cultures; proximal parenting, i.e., body contact and body stimulation, is prevalent in rural, low-educated farmer families. Parents from urban educated families in cultures with a more interdependent history use both strategies. Besides these cultural preferences, little is known about the relations between these styles as well as the behavioural systems constituting them. In this study therefore, the relations between the styles and the constituting behaviours were analysed in samples that differ with respect to their preferences of distal and proximal parenting. The hypothesized differences between the samples and the negative relationship between distal and proximal parenting, as well as between the respective behavioural systems can clearly be demonstrated. Furthermore, the impact of the sociodemographic variables with respect to the parenting strategies can be shown. Results were discussed as supporting two alternative parenting strategies that serve different socialization goals.

Abstract:ABSTRACT. Parents are potentially the most influential individuals in children's lives. The 21st Century parent has to compete, however, with multiple sources of information, both human and nonhuman, (e.g., children's peers, non-familial adults, TV, technology gadgets, Internet) in shaping the minds, values, and beliefs of children. In the absence of a shared purpose, these sources may offer opinions, images, and activities incongruent with the philosophy espoused by the custodial parent(s). In this paper, the author encourages 21st Century parents to create and maintain parenting communities - community networks of individuals, not necessarily confined to relatives - to support the parenting process. [Parenting involves] raising children to be healthy and competent adults who are capable of functioning independently in the world - A.J. Thomas (2000). The task of parenting can be overwhelming (Reddy, 1997, p. 321). Current family life differs from life in the 1950s in the areas of time, income and cost of living, demography, and employment of women (Duquaine, 1997). Changing attitudes, economics, and social norms have transformed how children are cared for (Farkas, Duffet & Johnson, 2000). The 21st Century parent has to contend with multiple new entities (e.g., TV, computers, Internet, Nintendo) that compete for the attention of children and contribute to a loss of family connectedness and community. Parenting, as discussed in this paper, refers to a group of people, led by the custodial parent(s), who share a common interest in contributing to the positive development of a child. A community may be defined as "a group of people who interact as a social unit and have interests, work, etc. in common". It is in that context that the terminology parenting community is used. McCaslin and Infanti (1998) suggest that parenting is a societal construction, and that construction includes multiple messages from policymakers, popular media, researchers, and educators. McCaslin and Infanti further assert that too many parents are either incompetent or unwilling to parent effectively. In previous generations when parents had a parenting question or concern, they might ask an experienced relative or respected neighbor. However, the transient nature of our society, the changing roles of men and women, and the growing base of knowledge about child development have led many parents to look for additional types of resources and support systems (Banks & Roberts, 1998), including the Internet, which allow parents of children to electronically share and discuss child-rearing experiences and advice (Littlefield, 1996). The extended family concept is not new, and is personified in the old adage "It takes a village to raise a child". Historically, parents have used the extended family and related community to assist in the rearing of children (see Forehand & Kotchick, 1996; Garcia-Coll, Meyer & Brillon, 1995; both cited in Thomas, 2000). Billingsley (1968) described four types of the extended family: (a) subfamilies - a couple or parent/child dyad, living with family members; (b) families with secondary members-families who take in other family members; (c) augmented families - unrelated persons who live in households as a family unit; and (d) "no blood relatives" - persons who are accepted as family members. These latter family members were identified by Stack (1974) as "fictive kin". The field of education is beginning to use a community paradigm to accomplish better parent-school communication and neighboring support to serve its students (Villa, 2003). School principals could benefit from developing advisory groups to share their visions and ideas for improving educational outcomes. Parents would benefit from doing the same. In his book Raising good kids in tough times: 7 crucial habits for parent success, McIntire (1999) noted that parenting today is challenging because of the dangerous examples and attitudes to which children are exposed. …

Abstract:This study examined parenting style dimensions as moderators of relations between family religiousness and individual religiousness and spirituality. Participants were 122 emerging adults ages 17-31 (M = 20.90, SD = 2.75). Cross-sectional data were obtained through an online survey. Participants rated the frequency with which they engaged in various religious activities with their families when they were younger, the frequency with which they personally do those behaviors currently, their current spirituality, and the parenting styles used by their parents when they were younger. Family religiousness positively predicted individual religiousness and spirituality. Rejection and autonomy-support moderated the association between family religiousness and individual religiousness, while warmth, rejection, structure, chaos, and autonomy-support moderated the relationship between family religiousness and individual spirituality. Thus, religious beliefs and practices, at whatever level, may be more readily appropriated by the next generation in families characterized by authoritative parenting.
The Child–Mother–Father–Teacher Relationship Network in Kindergarten and Its Association with Children’s Social and Academic Development: An Ecological Perspective

Abstract:This study examines how a set of the child’s proximal relationships (mother–child, father–child, and teacher–child) and parent–teacher relationships relate to the child’s prosocial and learning behaviors in kindergarten. The sample included 95 mother–father–child triads (child mean age 5.9 years) and 42 kindergarten teachers. All adults reported on their relationship with the child and on their perceptions of parent–teacher relationships. Teachers reported on the child’s behaviors. Main findings: (1) All proximal relationships and the teachers’ relationships with mothers and fathers were related to children’s outcomes; and (2) different patterns of associations were found between father–child and mother–child relationships, and teacher–child relationship, parent–teacher relationships, and children’s outcomes. These findings hint to the different roles of fathers and mothers in their children’s development and to distinguished patterns of relationships of mothers and fathers with kindergarten teachers.

Naturalistic Parent Teaching in the Home Environment During Early Childhood

Abstract:Children's sociocultural experiences in their day-to-day lives markedly play a key role in learning about the world. This study investigated parent-child teaching during early childhood as it naturally occurs in the home setting. Thirty-nine families' naturalistic interactions in the home setting were observed; 1033 teaching sequences were identified based on detailed transcriptions of verbal and non-verbal behavior. Within these sequences, three domains of learning (knowledge, skills, and dispositions) and subtopics were identified and analyzed in relation to gender, child birth order, context, teaching strategies, and learner response. Findings show knowledge, skills, and dispositions were taught equally, marked by the most prominent subtopics taught within each domain, including cognitive (skill), game rule (knowledge), and social rule (disposition). Further, mothers and fathers were found to teach their children equally, however, fathers taught knowledge more than mothers, whereas mothers taught dispositions more than fathers. Differences between domains of learning and subtopics also existed between mother's and father's teaching based on child birth order and gender. This study also assessed the contrast between teaching knowledge, skills, and dispositions by context, parent teaching strategies, and child learner response. Results support the notion that family interactions in the home setting set a stage for children's rich informal learning experiences. Vygotskian sociocultural conceptions underpin this research and findings are discussed using this central theoretical lens.

Abstract:Parents and peers play critical roles in the socialization of children and adolescents, yet investigations on the role played by parents vs. peers have been largely separate for many years. To address this problem, we invited leading scholars in the field to collectively tell a complex story of the part that parents and peers together play in the development of children and adolescents. The resulting Special Issue is a collection of papers highlighting current conceptualizations and empirical work in this area, with a focus on additive, multiplicative, and transactional mechanisms that link parent and peer relational contexts to each other and to child/adolescent social and emotional development. Two papers present new conceptual models, six illustrate empirical work in the field, and one paper that provides a comprehensive review of the literature. The stories that are conveyed in the issue are both innovative and complex.

Abstract:The sociology of consumption pays relatively little detailed and systematic theoretical attention to children, while the sociology of childhood tends to view children’s consumption through what can be called the ‘production of consumption’ approach. This is surprising given the range of empirical and theoretical debate in the sociology of consumption, where ‘mode of consumption’,‘consumption as aesthetics’ and ‘material culture’ represent a further three approaches. By bringing together the sociologies of childhood and consumption, a framework for empirical research is advanced. Four inter-related themes are suggested: learning to consume; lifestyle and identity formation; children’s engagements with material culture; and the parent-child relationship. It is argued that such a framework offers scope to further understandings of how cultures of consumption impact on children, children and parents, and construct notions of childhood. A focus on children’s consumption also represents an opportunity to clarify key processes of influential theories of social change.
