Abstract:Singlet fission (SF) is a photophysical process in which a high energy photon is absorbed by one chromophore of an adjacent electronically coupled pair and converted into two lower-energy triplet excitons, one of which resides on each chromophore. The SF rate and efficiency are determined by the energy gap between the lowest excited singlet and triplet states of the chromophores and the electronic coupling between them as controlled by the interchromophore geometry. Terrylene-3,4-dicarboximide (TMI) meets the energetic requirements for SF but has yet to be studied. TMI is particularly interesting, because its electronic asymmetry results in significant intramolecular charge transfer character. Here, we characterize the photophysics of TMI in solution, single crystals, and polycrystalline films. The absorption and emission spectra of TMI are strongly solvent dependent, indicating that the dipole moment change between the ground and excited states is 9.8 D. SF in TMI single crystals and polycrystalline films proceeds from an excited state having significant CT character at τ = 12.8 and 16.3 ps, respectively, in near quantitative yield. This work shows that intramolecular chromophore CT states may play a role in promoting SF.
