Abstract:Electronic skins (e-skins) with multifunctional sensing functions have attracted a lot of attention due to their promising applications in intelligent robotics, human-machine interfaces, and wearable healthcare systems. Here, we report a multifunctional e-skin based on patterned metal films for tactile sensing of pressure and temperature with a broad linear response range by implementing the single sensing mechanism of piezoresistivity, which allows for the easy signal processing and simple device configuration. The sensing pixel features serpentine metal traces and spatially distributed microprotrusions. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the fundamental aspects of the multifunctional tactile sensing mechanism of the e-skin, which exhibits excellent flexibility and wearable conformability. The fabrication approach being compatible with the well-established microfabrication processes has enabled the scalable manufacturing of a large-scale e-skin for spatial tactile sensing in various application scenarios.

Abstract:The advancement of electronic skin envisions novel multifunctional human machine interfaces. Although motion sensing by detecting contact locations is popular and widely used in state-of-the-art flexible electronics, noncontact localization exerts fascinations with unique interacting experiences. This paper presents a self-powered noncontact electronic skin capable of detecting the motion of a surface electrified object across the plane parallel to that of the electronic skin based on electrostatic induction and triboelectric effects. The displacement of the object is calculated under the system of polar coordinates, with a resolution of 1.5 mm in the lengthwise direction and 0.76 degrees in the angular direction. It can serve as a human machine interface due to its ability to sense noncontact motions. An additional self-powered feature, enabled by its physical principles, solves the problem of power supply. This electronic skin consists of trilayers of polyethyleneterephthalate-indium tin oxide-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films, and microstructured PDMS as the electrified layer, which can be achieved through simplified, low cost, and scalable fabrication. Transparency, flexibility, and less number of electrodes enable such electronic skin to be easily integrated into portable electronic devices, such as laptops, smart phones, healthcare devices, etc.

Abstract:Tactile sensations are mainly transmitted to each other by physical touch. Wireless touch perception could be a revolution for us to interact with the world. Here, we report a wireless self-sensing and haptic-reproducing electronic skin (e-skin) to realize noncontact touch communications. A flexible self-sensing actuator was developed to provide an integrated function in both tactile sensing and haptic feedback. When this e-skin was dynamically pressed, the actuator generated an induced voltage as tactile information. Via wireless communication, another e-skin could receive this tactile data and run a synchronized haptic reproduction. Thus, touch could be wirelessly conveyed in bidirections between two users as a touch intercom. Furthermore, this e-skin could be connected with various smart devices to form a touch internet of things where one-to-one and one-to-multiple touch delivery could be realized. This wireless touch presents huge potentials in remote touch video, medical care/assistance, education, and many other applications.

Abstract:A hierarchical synergistic approach is proposed to construct a programmable and robust electronic skin (PR e‐skin) with in‐sensor computing architecture, allowing it to selectively extract efficient data and differentiate touch position and pressure information at the data terminal. Combining the neural network, the PR e‐skin reaches a high recognition accuracy, which reveals the great potential in intelligent interaction and security. High‐precise, crosstalk‐free tactile perception offers an intuitive way for informative human‐machine interactions. However, the differentiation and labeling of touch position and strength require substantial computational space due to the cumbersome post‐processing of parallel data. Herein, a programmable and robust electronic skin (PR e‐skin) with event‐driven in‐sensor touch differential and perception, solving the inherent defects in the von Neumann framework is introduced. The PR e‐skin realizes feature simplification and reduction of data transmission by integrating the computing framework into sensing terminals. Furthermore, the event‐driven functional mode further greatly compresses untriggered redundant data. Benefiting from the minimal concise dataset, the PR e‐skin can directly differentiate touch position and pressure with swift response time ( 10 000 cycles) of the in‐sensor computing architectural feature. In a designable, continuous position detection with an extensive pressure range (210 kPa), which is an improvement of 5.5 times, the PR e‐skin can ultra‐sensitive extract trajectory sliding or rapping actions. Moreover, combined with customized neural network, a dual‐encryption recognition system is constructed based on slide action, reaching a high recognition accuracy of ≈98%, which reveals the great potential in intelligent interaction and security.

Abstract:A multi-functional electronic skin (e-skin) with high sensitivity and wide response range is crucial for intelligent human-computer interaction (HCI) system. Here, a multi-functional hybrid e-skin (TPES) integrated by a piezocapacitive pressure sensor (PCPS) and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is reported. An ion-gel electrospinning doped with MXene is combined with a micro-structured ion-gel to enrich the structural variations of the overall device, enabling TPES to achieve a high sensitivity of 616.42 kPa  1, a broad response range of 0.6 Pa-1 MPa, and a fast response time of 5.6 ms. The vast surface area of the mixed cellulose foam layer effectively enhances the electrical output of the TENG, making TPES's application scenarios become more flexible. By further integrating the different functionalities of the TPES with one-dimensional convolutional neural networks and HCI module, a gesture recognition and material perception HCI system is realized. Additionally, benefiting from the excellent performance of the PCPS and TENG, a multi-information recognition HCI system is established, capable of simultaneously recognizing the pressure and surface material of the balls and enabling realtime interaction with a virtual character. In summary, the proposed work offers a novel avenue for practical intelligent HCI system in virtual reality field.

Abstract:Self-powered electronic skin is a promising field for human-machine interfaces to the next generation of intelligent and interactive products due to its capability of including multiple physical parameters for sensing without additional energy supply. This paper reports a novel active multifunctional electronic skin capable of independently detecting contact trajectory, acceleration, velocity and pressure based on synchronized triboelectrification and piezoelectric effect. Motion trajectories in the full plane can be identified using a net-cross electrodes configuration design. Under this electrode special structure design, the motion information such as velocity and acceleration can be accurately obtained by the time difference between the peak values of the triboelectric signal. Real-time detection of dynamic pressure with only two electrodes is achieved by a spacer-grid design and a high quality piezoelectric nanofiber film. By virtue of its high sensitivity and precision, a smart anti-counterfeiting signature system (SASS) can be achieved by this self-powered multifunctional electronic skin with the capability of recognizing the writing habits of people within a hundred millisecond error for security. It is also a promising candidate in terms of human-machine interaction, cyber security, etc.

Abstract:Electronic skin (e-skin) comprises a network of tactile sensors, which has broad application prospects in prosthetics, advanced robotics and continuous health monitoring. Here, a self-powered artificial e-skin is fabricated in a simple and cost-effective method for high resolution pressure sensing. No external power supply is needed for the e-skin owing to the triboelectric mechanism. The response time of pressure sensing is approximately 68ms and the sensitivity is 0.055nAKPa−1. With excellent flexibility, the device can be adhered on most curved surfaces for pressure sensing purposes. The fabricated e-skin with resolution as high as 127×127dpi is capable of mapping the 2D tactile trajectory of a tip. The resolution can proceed to be improved with the enhancement of the pixel density. Furthermore, the unique construction brings about a significant reduction in the number of the test channels from N×N to 2×N, which greatly decreases the measurement costs. This work offers an effective step for e-skin, with superiorities of self-powered, high resolution, simple fabrication and low-cost.

Abstract:Low-power or self-powered electronic skin (e-skin) is considered an important research area, as it reduces the requirements for stable energy sources in electronic systems. However, most reported self-powered e-skins can only detect dynamic mechanical stimuli, but cannot detect ubiquitous static mechanical stimuli, resulting in a significant amount of information loss. In this paper, we report a self-powered e-skin based on electrode potential difference that can detect dynamic/static mechanical stimuli with sensitivity and response time of 399 mV/kPa and 85 ms, respectively. In this device, the mechanical stimulus is converted into a voltage signal by regulating the impedance of the electrode/electrolyte interface. In the process of preparing the device, a "green" electrode ink was prepared using a water-soluble, biodegradable polymer as the binder of the active material. Owing to the printability of the ink, a patterned electrode can be formed on a flexible substrate using low-cost screen-printing technology. Finally, we designed a co-planar shared electrode structure, which effectively reduced the complexity of the circuit layout. This new device has been successfully used for information acquisition of objects and detection of physiological signals, and we believe it has significant implications for the future development of e-skins.

Abstract:Highlights A bioinspired MXene-based user-interactive electronic skin (e-skin) for digital and visual dual-signal sensing was designed and fabricated. The MXene-based e-skin exhibited an excellent electromechanical sensing performance and realized the real-time monitoring of human activities, such as handwriting, drinking, walking, and speaking. Benefiting from the outstanding Joule-heating performance of MXene-based film, the e-skin with thermochromic pigments could realize a wider range and dynamic coloration for passive displays and visual recognition of various human motions.

Abstract:Replicating the haptic perception capability of the human hand is an indispensable goal for intelligent robots and human–machine interactions. Multifunctional electronic skin (e‐skin) sensors can be an ideal candidate to bridge the gaps among humans, robots, and the environment. Mutual interference of multistimuli and unconformable spatial distribution impedes the application of e‐skin sensors. Hence, a large‐area, hand‐covering elastomeric e‐skin sensor is proposed to imitate the human hand for multifunctional detection. Five multifunctional sensing units are designed on the fingertips, and 15 pressure‐sensing units are distributed on the finger phalanxes and palm to cover the main sensory area of the hand. A multilayer architecture is designed to improve the sensing performances and reduce the coupling interference during multifunctional detection. The e‐skin sensor exhibits similarity to the human hand not only in shape but also in functionality, possessing pressure sensitivity of 0.025 V kPa−1 in 0.1–120 kPa and temperature sensitivity of 0.38% °C−1 in 20–70 °C. The performance of the e‐skin sensor can meet the requirements of daily manipulations. Experimental studies on grasping objects with different grasping modes and object properties demonstrate the potential applications of the e‐skin sensor for grasping haptic perception and human–robot interactions.

Abstract:Haptic feedback technology represents a frontier with revolutionary potential, particularly in virtual and augmented reality. Skin, as an underexplored sensory interface, holds tremendous potential to significantly enrich our perceptual experiences while directly impacting the fields of communication, entertainment, and medicine. This article presents a programmable, ultra-lightweight, and ultra-thin wireless wearable haptic electronic skin that achieves rapid response and large mechanical feedback force and deformation displacement output. The electronic skin comprises a series of haptic electro-hydraulic actuators, each with the weight of 0.023 g and the thickness of 199 μm. Each actuator can be independently regulated and produce a maximum normal force of 150 mN and a normal displacement of 0.58 mm, simultaneously achieving the haptic presentation of textures. Relying on a portable multi-channel control circuit system designed, each electro-hydraulic actuator of the haptic electronic skin can be precisely control to achieve various haptic patterns. Showcasing its potentials, the haptic technology aids visual-impaired individuals in reading books, provides ground navigation instructions, and enhances gaming experiences, contributing to a more immersive and authentic artificial intelligence environment.

Abstract:This paper proposed a novel electronic skin, which can detect 3-D force, and estimate accurate touch position at the same time. The proposed multimodal electronic skin is designed to capacitive sensing mechanism. Through the densely covered driving electrode, the detection area is divided into a number of staggered subareas. When the contact point is transferred from one subarea to another, outputs of the adjacent subareas change regularly. Then contact position can be estimated. Pressure sensitive layer is designed to needle shaped structure to increase the range and sensitivity of tactile sensor. After measurement, pressure change and slip of touch point can be detected simultaneously.

Abstract:In the field of human-robot interaction, there is a growing demand for high-sensitivity proximity and pressure perception in sensor design. However, current sensing solutions often rely on the combination of several sensing principles, which presents challenges in signal acquisition, flexibility, and array integration. To overcome these challenges, we propose a flexible array of electronic skins, inspired by the electric field sensing mechanism in electric fish, capable of proximity and pressure sensing. The electronic skin consists of several key components, including an elastic layer, emitting electrodes, receiving electrodes, and a dielectric layer. By exploiting this simple yet effective our electronic skin is capable of generating electric fields through the emitting electrodes and detecting electric field disturbances through the receiving electrodes. This design enables simultaneous bimodal perception of proximity and pressure, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the environment. One of the main advantages of our approach is its simplicity. By leveraging the electric fields as the sensing modality, we eliminate the need for complex combinations of multiple sensors. This not only simplifies the overall system design, but also reduces manufacturing cost and enhances scalability. Additionally, the use of electric fields enables real-time and accurate detection of both object proximity and applied pressure on the robot, leading to improved environmental awareness. To demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our electronic skin, we conducted experiments on a robotic arm. The results of these experiments demonstrate the successful implementation of basic human-robot interactions using our proposed technique. This validation further emphasizes the potential and practicality of our approach.

Abstract:Electronic skins (E-Skins) are crucial for future robotics and wearable devices to interact with and perceive the real world. Prior research faces challenges in achieving comprehensive tactile perception and versatile functionality while keeping system simplicity for lack of multimodal sensing capability in a single sensor. Two kinds of tactile sensors, transient voltage artificial neuron (TVAN) and sustained potential artificial neuron (SPAN), featuring self-generated zero-biased signals are developed to realize synergistic sensing of multimodal information (vibration, material, texture, pressure, and temperature) in a single device instead of complex sensor arrays. Simultaneously, machine learning with feature fusion is applied to fully decode their output information and compensate for the inevitable instability of applied force, speed, etc, in real applications. Integrating TVAN and SPAN, the formed E-Skin achieves holistic touch awareness in only a single unit. It can thoroughly perceive an object through a simple touch without strictly controlled testing conditions, realize the capability to discern surface roughness from 0.8 to 1600 µm, hardness from 6HA to 85HD, and correctly distinguish 16 objects with temperature variance from 0 to 80 °C. The E-skin also features a simple and scalable fabrication process, which can be integrated into various devices for broad applications.

Abstract:User-interactive interfaces, converting tactile stimuli into readable signals to users and devices simultaneously, improve the communication and interaction between human and machines and therefore greatly contribute to the safety and dexterity during the interactions. However, the concomitant challenges of current user-interactive interfaces such as complex architecture, massive electrodes and fussy cable connections, bulky and unhandy power supply, and deficiency in multistimuli responses have yet to be solved. Herein, an all-optical tactile sensing platform consisting of heterogeneous mechanoluminescent materials and polymer matrix is proposed for the conversion of multiple tactile stimuli into heterochromatic lights in an untethered and self-powered manner. The all-optical tactile sensing platform can respond to tiny shear force such as fingertip slipping with a low limit of 2 N and wide range of strains ranging from 30% to 70% with appropriate discrimination. Most importantly, the visualization of tactile stimuli with human- and machine-readability and vividness permit remote and wireless user-interactive applications such as videogames and RC car control, assisted with the developed method of active optical signal recognition. This work presents a paradigm shift to user-interactive interfaces, boosting their implementation in multitudinous areas such as artificial intelligences and the Internet of Things.

Abstract:As wearable devices to mimic the sensing capabilities of human skin, electronic skins with practical concerns of functionality and comfort start to take center stage. The heavy and bulky batteries in early designs pose flexibility and miniaturization issues. It is therefore highly desirable to develop a battery-free flexible electronic skin for multiple motion sensing. To that end, we have designed a self-powered hybrid electronic skin (HES) combining triboelectric (TB) and piezoelectric (PZ) effects to realize a wearable multi-sensing. Pressure sensitivity approaches 54.37 mV kPa−1 and 9.80 mV kPa−1 in the pressure range of 0–80 kPa and 80–240 kPa, respectively. The fabricated HES demonstrates excellent durability even after 14,000 periodic operation cycles. Additionally, it can measure and differentiate contact and non-contact sensing, such as click sensing, distance distinguishing, respiration detection, head motion sensing, and vocal cord vibration recognition, along with some physiological signals monitoring. As an assembled sensor array, the HES distinguishes multi-point pressure distribution and realize single-point touch trajectory visualization in real-time. In the near future, this HES could represent a critical component in smart robots, intelligent prostheses, and healthcare monitoring.

Flexible Electronic Skin with Multisensory Integration

Abstract:Flexible electronic skins (E-skins) with human-like multiple sensing capabilities of perceiving various stimuli, have attracted more and more attentions for their wide applications in wearable electronics, health monitoring, humanoid robotics and smart prosthesis. However, to meet the rigorous requirements for these complicated applications, challenges still exist in multifunctional integration, high performance, simple structure, low-cost fabrication and easy signal processing. This review focuses on the significant sensing capabilities that are necessarily required in E-skins, including perceiving stimuli of pressure, temperature, humidity, flow and materials. Various mechanisms are utilized in multiple kinds of sensors in current study, such as piezoresistivity, thermoelectricity, electrical impedance, convective heat transfer, etc. Multisensory integration is the basic characteristics of E-skins that various stimuli are perceived simultaneously. There are mainly three mechanisms applied in multisensory integration, that is, direct-integration method, functional-materials based method and uniform sensing method. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are analyzed. Finally, the challenges and future development on multisensory integration of E-skins are summarized.
