Abstract:Regulation characteristics are crucial in effectively utilizing compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology for stabilizing renewable energy generation and emerging power systems. While research on integrating CAES systems with renewables has surged recently, there remains a notable shortage of experimental verifications in this domain. This paper addresses this gap by initially disclosing the storage regulation characteristics of a piston compressor-based isochoric CAES system through experimentation. Subsequently, it experimentally explores the possibility of applying isochoric CAES as a renewable power-side energy storage device for the first time. The findings reveal that the operating pressure within the storage reservoir influences the power regulation capability of isochoric CAES, which is usually ignored in the annual performance analysis of hybrid CAES and renewable systems. Specifically, higher reservoir operating pressure corresponds to increased load-sharing capacity. Additionally, the piston compressor power consumption increases with decreasing inlet temperature, enabling modulation of the renewable energy load-sharing capacity in the energy storage system. Furthermore, the wind power tracking experimental results demonstrate that different pressure levels within the gas tank correspond to distinct adjustment limitations. Notably, within the load-sharing capacity of the storage system, the real-time tracking error of actual storage power compared to wind power remains within ±5 %, which indicates the feasibility of isochoric CAES as a power-side energy storage for renewable energy. This study provides foundational insights for operating and controlling piston compressor-based isochoric CAES systems, offering valuable guidance for grid dispatching strategies.
