Abstract:Translating Mao Zedong’s poetry into English has been a significant cause since the founding of New China and aroused great academic attention in China and other countries. In 1975, Eugene Eoyang, a Chinese American scholar, translated eight poems of Mao and published them later in the remarkable poetry anthology Sunflower Splendor, which has made a considerable contribution to the promotion and canonization of Mao’s poetry as well as traditional Chinese poetry in the English world. Eoyang is a scholar translator who knows well about both cultures, the identity, cultural concepts, translation strategies, and other aspects that he demonstrated in his translation are of great reference value compared with other versions home and abroad. By analyzing the textual and cultural features and specific cases in his translation, the translator’s valuable first-hand experience, along with the profound literary and cultural attainments reflected in the translation process, can be learned to guide future translation and promotion of Mao’s poetry in foreign cultures.

Abstract:Mao Han is not only a poet with distinctive personalities,but also a distinctive poetic critic and editor.Featuring elegant emotions and beautiful dictions and favorable allusions,his poems,different from those in the tide,are fit for both reading and chanting.His criticisms target not only at those once-popular vacant political lyrics,but also the so-called obscure and eccentric pioneering which enjoy the current popularity with scant readers.In this sense,his and criticisms highlight each other.His advocating of moderate poems should be based on the re-establishment of our subjectivity in literature.
The Rhetorical Application of Ancient Chinese Poetry and Idiom in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

Abstract:Facing the rapid development of Chinese comprehensive strength and overseas Confucius Institute, teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress needs further study of rhetoric. The spread of Chinese splendid culture needs rhetoric as a support. An excellent Chinese teacher needs more in-depth understanding of rhetoric. This article from two aspects of ancient poetry and idioms illustrates the importance of rhetoric in teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress. The main rhetorical devices are metaphor, personification, allusion, exaggeration, repeated and intertextuality, which explore the secrets and greatness of the Chinese rhetorical applications. At the same time, the paper has made some analyses and put forward some suggestions for the problems which may occur to the application of ancient poetry and idoms in the teaching Chinese as a foreign language progress.

Abstract:Mao Zedong's poetry significantly influenced Chinese vocal music in the 20th century and has been reflected in the creation of many Chinese Art songs. These songs are highly regarded in the Chinese music industry and are considered great works of Chinese literature and art. However, there is a lack of discussions on Chinese Art Songs based on Mao Zedong's poetry. This research aims to interpret and perform the musical styles of selected Chinese art songs based on Mao Zedong's poetry. This study encompasses three research objectives. The first is to identify the characteristics inherent in Chinese Art Songs based on Mao Zedong's poetry. The second objective involves the interpretation of the technical aspects of Mao Zedong's poetry in the context of Chinese art songs. Lastly, the third objective aims to perform selected Chinese art songs based on Mao Zedong's poetry in the form of recitals. This study will be conducted through the practice-based research framework, wherein textual and non-textual documentation will be utilized to report on the practice. By exploring the integration of Mao Zedong's poetry into art songs, this study provides a distinct approach to interpreting and conveying his poetry's emotions, themes, and ideas.

On the English Translation of Mao Zedong's Poems from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

Abstract:Skopos theory holds that translation is a purposeful intercultural communication behavior, whose aim is to produce translated texts that will satisfy the needs of target language readers. The different English versions of Mao Zedong's Poems meet different needs of various readers and fulfill diverse translation purposes, which "coincidentally" accord with Skopos theory. Skopos theory, having all kinds of connections with Mao Zedong's poetry translation, has a profound impact on it, which can be well represented in the translation of its tune, the reproduction of its verse and its rhythm. Influenced by different translation purposes, different communicative intentions and different background of the recipients, the translated texts will be different with their own merits. The author tries to make a comparison between various English translations versions of the same poem and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each version due to the diversity of purposes so that proper translation methods and strategies will be obtained.

Abstract:A renaissance in literature and art took place in the People's Republic of China from the late 1970s through the 1980s. In poetry, the outburst of vitality first showed itself in 1978–80 in the underground Today (Jintian) group, which included cofounders and editors Bei Dao (b. 1949) and Mang Ke (b. 1951), and such contributors as Jiang He (b. 1949), Shu Ting (b. 1952), Gu Cheng (1956–93), and Yang Lian (b. 1955), to name only a few of the best-known in the West. Today lent momentum to the flourish of Menglongshi , commonly translated as “Obscure Poetry” or “Misty Poetry,” in the early 1980s and became the major source of inspiration—no less than the target of criticism and revolt—to post- Menglong poetry in the second half of the decade. Like Menglongsbi , post- Menglong poetry is a term of inevitable, even misleading, simplification, since it refers to a wide range of varying styles and modes of writing. Rather than being unified by a set of formal and stylistic characteristics, it is marked by a radical openness to experimentation. The multiplicity of experiments in poetry since the mid-1980s may be more broadly and appropriately referred to as avant-garde poetry or experimental poetry (Yeh 1992). This paper will focus on an interesting—and unique in today's world—phenomenon that I call the “cult of poetry.” I will first examine the “cult” by defining its salient features and then present a critical analysis of the diverse historical and psychological forces that contribute to such a literary phenomenon.

Abstract:Mao Zedong's technological thought, as an important component of Mao Zedong's Thoughts, possesses some specific and historical features which were developed in the process of its formation and practice. The first seven years after the founding of the People's Republic of China, both gains and losses were found in the industrial construction that was carried out under the guidance of Mao Zedong's technological thought. Abstract:This article focuses on a specific aspect of Yu Hua’s satiric criticism of Mao-era rhetoric through the use of double-voiced discourse in his full-length novel Cries in the Drizzle. I analyse how this double-voiced discourse is achieved through the contrast between the focalizers’ unreflective and matter-of-fact use of Maoist rhetoric and the public narrator’s clear awareness of the shabby realities behind this rhetoric. The varied understandings of Maoist rhetoric within a variety of narrative voices give rise to sarcasm, irony, and parody. Four episodes in Cries in the Drizzle will be analysed in detail. In each of these, Mao-era rhetoric is projected and embedded in the daily conversations and language of some characters who hail from villages in the countryside. These episodes invite readers to reflect upon just how much of the daily discourse of the Chinese people alludes to, or incorporates, the words of Mao and the Party, and also to appreciate the varied forms of double-voiced discourse brought about by differentiated perspectives of the public narrator versus the focalizers in Yu Hua’s story.

Abstract:As an important part of party building, the party’s style of work is an important reflection of the party’s nature and purpose. During the Central Soviet Area, Mao Zedong continued to carry out self-revolution in the spirit of self-sublation and self-criticism on the basis of inheriting and developing the Marxist-Leninist theory of party building, and maintained the advanced nature of the Marxist party. Although Mao Zedong did not put forward the formal conclusion of the “three styles” and the “two musts” in the form of a complete text, he proposed to the whole party the strengthening of the party from three main aspects: ideological style, work style and life style. The idea of strengthening the Party’s style of work has enriched the Communist Party of China’s experience in theory and practice. This has important implications for persisting in promoting comprehensive and strict governance of the party in the new era, promoting the party’s self-revolution, and building an advanced Marxist political party.

Abstract:This paper examines the relevance between the examples of Words of the Lianxiang Style(lianxiang ci) referred to by Mao Qiling in his West River Comments on Poetry(xi he ci hua),and his imitations of that style: No Selling Oneself in Marriage and No Conniving Thief,including their names,categories,contents,format and origin.It holds that what Mao has written in his imitations does not come out of thin air.As a matter of fact,the two books reflect the conventions and customs in the Liao and Jin Period(916 A.D.~1234 A.D.) of China;therefore,they are of great significance for the folklorists.

Abstract:This study adopts a corpus-based approach to examine the linguistic features manifested in the English translations of Mao Zedong's speeches, taking Winston Churchill's speeches (representative of normalized spoken texts) and the spoken texts in BNC Sampler (representative of original spoken texts) as the reference corpora. By investigating the macro- and micro-linguistic features, it is found that the translated Mao's speeches (both direct and inverse translations) differ from normalized spoken texts as well as original spoken texts in three aspects: (i) macro-linguistic features, (ii) the use of personal pronouns, (iii) the use of modal verbs. In terms of macro-linguistic features, the average word length of the English translations is higher than that of normalized spoken texts and that of original spoken texts; the standardized type/token ratio and average sentence length of the English translations are higher than those of original spoken texts, but lower than those of normalized spoken texts. Meanwhile, in terms of the use of personal pronouns, the English translations of Mao's speeches prefer the underuse of the first person singular pronoun I. Furthermore, as far as modal verbs are concerned, the English translations of Mao's speeches prefer the overuse of must and should on the one hand, and the underuse of shall, could, may, and would on the other hand. Therefore, it can be said that the translated Mao's speeches exhibit some particular linguistic features, which can not only be differentiated from normalized spoken texts, but also be distinguished from original spoken texts. They are in a middle position in relation to normalized spoken texts as well as original spoken texts. This in-betweenness not only exhibits Mao's creative and idiosyncratic language use, but also reflects the influence of the language transfer from Chinese into English.

Abstract:The linguistic style of Mudan's poetry is an issue which easily arouses controversy and misunderstanding,the core of which,we believe,lies in his metaphors.With an initial probing into a particular phenomenon of his metaphors,i.e.,his method of combining thought with sensibility,or his method of personification of Abstract ideas,this article then introduces the concerning topic to the whole of Mudan's metaphors,and to Mudan's own cognition of metaphorical language,which is to eliminate the boundaries of conceptual categories while realizing the correspondence of inner reality and outer world.In addition,the article also investigates the negative effects of his usage of some metaphors with the conclusion that the overly frequent bridging of categories of objects in such metaphors has lead to the mess of perceptions,which may be regarded as a lesson on the proper use of metaphors.
