Professor Andrzej Katrusiak of the Faculty of Chemistry at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, has recently been appointed as a Section Editor for Acta Crystallographica Section B: Structural Science, Crystal Engineering and Materials , having served as a dedicated Co-editor of Acta Cryst. B since 2014. Andrzej studied Physics at Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) in Poznań. In 1978, he was employed as an assistant in the Faculty of Chemistry at AMU and in 1979 was awarded an MSc for thesis on `Quantum efficiency of dye lasers', supervised by Professor Franciszek Kaczmarek. In 1983, he defended his distinguished PhD thesis on the crystal structures of alkaloids, supervised by Professor Zygmunt Kałuski. Between 1983 and 1985, Andrzej was employed as a research fellow at the Department of Physics, Edinburgh University, where he and Professor Richard Nelmes conducted the first high-pressure single-crystal structural determinations in the UK using a diamond-anvil cell (DAC). His habilitation (1990) was dedicated to high-pressure crystallography and he was nominated professor in 1997. His current interests are thermodynamics, phase transitions, symmetry and materials chemistry under extreme conditions. After returning to Poznań, he implemented high-pressure experiments using the DAC, marking the first such experiments in Poland. Andrzej has also written and implemented several computer programs for processing high-pressure measurements, and designs and builds equipment for use in his research. He is known for scrupulously checking questionable results and regularly publishes in the IUCr Journals. Andrzej has organized many workshops dedicated to high-pressure crystallography, including 13 High-Pressure Frolic Goats Workshops in Poznań. In 2003, he co-organized the first High-Pressure Course in Erice with Peter McMillan and, alongside Professor Andreas Lemmerer, the High-Pressure Magic Workshop at Witwatersrand University (Johannesburg) in 2015. In 2014, Andrzej was elected Chair of the IUCr Commission on High Pressure and currently serves as a consultant to the Commission. He chaired the 55th European High-Pressure Group (EHPRG) Meeting in Poznań in 2017. We, along with our Managing Editor, Amanda Berry, are delighted to be working with Andrzej in his new role, helping develop Acta Cryst. B to serve the crystal engineering, crystal growth, materials and structural science communities. We would also like to thank Marc de Boissieu, who has recently stepped down as a Section Editor for Acta Crystallographica Section B , and wish him well for the future.

It provides a simple and easily accessible publication mechanism for the growing number of inorganic, metal-organic and organic crystal struc- ture determinations. The electronic submission, validation, refereeing and publication facilities of the journal ensure very rapid and high-quality publication, whilst key indica- tors and validation reports provide measures of structural reliability. In 2007, the journal published over 5000 structures. The average publication time is less than one month.

Abstract:Professor Reinhold Kienzler and his team have provided us a sound foundation on which it is now our responsibility to further build and maintain a high-quality and influential scientific journal in all branches of theoretical and applied mechanics. Part of this development will raise the profile of the focusing on continuum mechanics in general, structural mechanics, biomechanics, micro- and nanomechanics as well as hydrodynamics. In particular, the following topics are emphasized: thermodynamics of materials, material modeling, multi-physics, mechanical properties of materials, homogenization, phase transitions, fracture and damage mechanics, vibration, wave propagation, experimental mechanics as well as machine learning techniques in the context of applied mechanics. Thereby, new analytical, numerical and experimental methods suited to research in the above-mentioned subjects as well as contributions reviewing the development in these fields are welcome.

Abstract:The study of main-group metal elements and their coordination complexes with amino acids is an important theme in coordination chemistry, but it has often been overshadowed by the intense interest in transition-metal coordination complexes. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in main-group compounds, extending across all members of sand p-blocks in the Period Table, which has resulted in the discovery of numerous new classes of compounds with previously unknown structures and bonding. Among these achievements, the coordination complexes of main group metals with amino acid ligands are especially notable. As a kind of functional ligand, amino acids set up a bridge of interdisciplinary subjects between coordination chemistry and biology. The research on coordination chemistry of main group metals with amino acid ligands will benefit to understanding of the biological effects of main group metals; developing new medicine; designing and synthesizing functional and environmental friendly materials. To achieve these targets, the structural information of these new coordination complexes is very important and it provides fundamental knowledge for more extensive investigation in the future. Therefore, this review focus on the single crystal structures of the coordination complexes of main group metals with amino acid ligands based on X-ray crystallography. Literature coverage is around the last 15 years and ends to May 2013 although some older works are also included for comparing. Specially, this article has been written to commemorate 2014 the International Year of Crystallography declared by United Nations.

Abstract:The Journal of Coordination Chemistry has developed and grown significantly over the last 25 years, moving and developing within the field of coordination chemistry, but also with the growth and development of publishing since the turn of the century. For 18 years I had the pleasure and good fortune of working with Professor Atwood as the Journal grew and developed from a publication with Gordon and Breach into the major repository of content that the journal has become. I joined the JCC team on the publisher side from early 2001. At that time the journal had been published by Gordon and Breach since its inception in 1971. The journal had grown steadily over the first decade publishing 4 issues per year. By 1986 it was publishing 2 volumes of 4 issues per year in sections A and B and then further expanded to 3 volumes a year by 1993. Professor Atwood became the Co-Editor in 1993 as the journal started to expand and returned to publishing in a single title format.

Abstract:Continuous-rotation 3D electron diffraction methods are increasingly popular for the structure analysis of very small organic molecular crystals and crystalline inorganic materials. Dynamical diffraction effects cause non-linear deviations from kinematical intensities that present issues in structure analysis. Here, a method for structure analysis of continuous-rotation 3D electron diffraction data is presented that takes multiple scattering effects into account. Dynamical and kinematical refinements of 12 compounds—ranging from small organic compounds to metal–organic frameworks to inorganic materials—are compared, for which the new approach yields significantly improved models in terms of accuracy and reliability with up to fourfold reduction of the noise level in difference Fourier maps. The intrinsic sensitivity of dynamical diffraction to the absolute structure is also used to assign the handedness of 58 crystals of 9 different chiral compounds, showing that 3D electron diffraction is a reliable tool for the routine determination of absolute structures.

Abstract:Four! That’s what golfers shout as a warning when their ball is going off target. Or so I used to think when I was small. Actually it’s ‘Fore’, which seems a bit of an old fashioned English word these days. But there’s no mistake in the title of this Editorial – we are celebrating the first impact factor for Advances in Physics: X, and it’s Five! Which is rather good, for starters. Five is an interesting number. For example, in the Bible where numbers often have a secondary, symbolic meaning, Five is the number of fellowship. In the Exodus the Israelites came out of their captivity in Egypt ‘in fives’ (Exodus 13: 18, original text). Other examples could be given, but that might be stretching even the legendary breadth of APX! And not even the most enthusiastic advocates of the project would regard our journal as spiritual! But this most encouraging marker of the successful establishment of the journal depends in every way on an International Fellowship – amongst Authors, Editors, Advisers, Referees and Staff. My grateful thanks to all who have contributed, five years after the serious work of creating the new journal began. And where next? We can only hope Onwards, Upwards and Fore-ward . . .
