Abstract:PurposeFrom an institutional perspective, this study empirically examines whether institutional pressures, such as industry pressures and public attention, significantly influence corporate philanthropic disaster responses (CPDRs). Furthermore, this paper aims to examine the moderating role of a company’s prior history of philanthropic donation.Design/methodology/approachThis paper uses secondhand data from 217 Chinese listed companies that responded philanthropically to the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake.FindingsThis paper finds that both industry pressure and public attention are positively associated with companies’ donations; their prior history of philanthropic donations significantly moderates these relationships such that these relationships become stronger and for companies that have prior histories of small philanthropic donations.Originality/valueFirst, this paper contributes to the philanthropy literature by identifying two kinds of institutional pressures (i.e. industry pressure and public attention) that exert great influences on CPDR contributions. Second, by studying the moderating role of firms’ prior philanthropic history, this study contributes to the understanding of companies’ different reactions to institutional pressures. In addition to the theoretical contribution, this paper encourages companies to proactively establish a sustainable philanthropic giving plan rather than being passively driven by external stakeholders.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate that corporate philanthropy can be driven from the bottom to the top. In particular, the authors investigate whether employees’ donations influence corporate philanthropy and under what conditions this effect occurs. Design/methodology/approach The sample consists of Chinese listed firms that disclosed the amount employees donated in response to the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. The Heckman two-stage selection model is applied to examine the effect of employees’ donations on corporate philanthropy and the conditions under which this effect occurs. Findings The results show that employees’ donations are positively associated with corporate philanthropy. Furthermore, a higher percentage of females in top management teams can significantly strengthen the effect of employees’ donations on corporate philanthropy. When the average age of the top management team members is high, the influence of employees’ donations on corporate philanthropy is stronger. Practical implications This is an empirical study that helps to predict corporate philanthropy. Another practical implication is that employees should be recognized as an important element of corporate social responsibility. Social implications The results encourage employees to become drivers of corporate social responsibility. Originality/value This study contributes to the corporate social responsibility literature by demonstrating that corporate philanthropy can be driven from the bottom to the top. Moreover, this study integrates signaling theory into the study of corporate social responsibility. Finally, this study identifies two important contingent factors that strengthen the effect of employees on top managers’ decisions about corporate social responsibility.

Abstract:A research was made of the data collected from 290 firms in Yangtze River delta involved in contribution from the year 2004 to 2006.The analysis and test based on a structural equation modeling show that corporate giving can be reified to different kinds of characteristics,which affect the competitive advantages of firms differently.The characteristics of contribution have indirect influence on the firms’ competitive advantages by transferring social capital to firms and the competitive advantages of firms are improved.Finally,some effective policies are proposed to encourage firms to participate into philanthropy.

Abstract:PurposeThe effect of board intellectual capital on non-profit organizational performance in non-western, less developed economies has been an important yet under-researched area. Given that the institutional and business relationships of a board account for the majority of board intellectual capital, the purpose of this paper is to fill the previously mentioned research gap by addressing how the interactions of the two relationships of board directors influence Chinese philanthropic foundation performance.Design/methodology/approachFollowing Creswell's (2014) explanatory sequential mixed-methodology, a qualitative study (Study 1) was first conducted to pre-test the assumptions, and then a quantitative study (Study 2) was carried out based on a secondary database of 1,405 Chinese philanthropic foundations to further examine the hypotheses. Several regression models were built for analyzing the results.FindingsStudy 1 confirmed that Chinese philanthropic foundations gained greater revenues and hosted more public welfare activities by leveraging the reinforcing or complementary effects of board directors' intellectual capital to improve organizational performance. Study 2 further examined the hypotheses that the interactions of intellectual capital increased the total revenue and public welfare expenditure of the foundations; however, significant positive relationships were only identified in foundations at the local level, and no significant associations were found in those at the national level.Practical implicationsThe research indicates that the intellectual capital of board directors may influence the performance of their philanthropic foundations. Thus, Chinese philanthropic foundations should be more aware of the importance of this influence when determining which candidates will join the board.Originality/valueThe study makes significant contributions to the existing knowledge of the development of non-governmental organizations; it incorporates the resource dependence theory and agency theory into understanding how the intricate interactions between the institutional and business relationships of board directors affect foundation performance and how the jurisdiction affiliations act as a boundary condition for such relationships in a non-western setting such as China.

Abstract:While past studies have enriched our understanding of the impact of returnee executives on firm market strategy and outcomes, we know relatively little about the relationship between returnee executives and firm nonmarket strategies. Grounded in upper echelons theory, this study explores the relationship between returnee executives and corporate philanthropy, the latter of which is an important nonmarket strategy in emerging economies such as China. Using data on publicly listed Chinese companies from 2010 to 2017, we find that the proportion of returnee executives is negative related to corporate philanthropy. We also find that this negative relationship is strengthened by executive ownership, but weakened by corporate prominence and political connections. Our study makes important theoretical contributions to strategic leadership research, upper echelons theory, and the literature of corporate philanthropy. The managerial implications are also discussed.

Abstract:Executive characteristics have a significant impact on corporate decision-making, corporate sustainable behavior, and stock market performance, which may influence the corporations’ sustainable development in the long run. The role of returnee talents in the corporate sustainable development has received extensive academic attention. Using data of Chinese A-share listed companies over the period of 2008–2018, we find that there is a negative relationship between executives’ foreign experience and stock price synchronicity. We also prove that corporate social responsibility (CSR) has a significant mediating effect on the relationship between returnee executives and stock price synchronicity. The returnee executives tend to pursue long-term sustainable activities and improve CSR engagement quality, thereby reducing stock price synchronicity. Our extended analysis reveals that the benefit of returnee executives is more pronounced for non-SOEs and for firms located in regions with a low degree of marketization. This study has some implications for the Chinese firms in relation to their CSR information disclosure behavior, and it gives suggestions to strengthen capital market efficiency for the sustainable development of corporations.

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between returnee directors and cost of debt. We use robust econometric modelling on large unique sample data of 15,832 firm-year observations from 2007 to 2018. We find a negative and significant association between returnee directors and the cost of debt, suggesting that these directors give firms access to cheaper debt capital. The negative relationship is more pronounced in private-owned firms and firms with more than one returnee director. In further analyses, we demonstrate that returnee directors' favourable influence on the cost of debt is through improvement in internal monitoring mechanisms evident in quality financial reporting. Our findings provide evidence of how returnee directors send positive signals to the debt market through effective monitoring and transmission of superior corporate governance practices to emerging markets.

Abstract:Many corporations actively engage in political activities to enhance their relationships with politicians, facilitating access to scarce resources and creating competitive advantages. We investigate corporate donations to explore how they initiate interactions between firms and new local leaders in China. Specifically, we propose that political turnover creates unique opportunities for firms to win over new officials via corporate donations, especially in competitive markets. Moreover, we find that firms that make generous donations at the beginning of a new city secretary's tenure receive more attention from representatives of new local leaders, especially firms that were politically disadvantaged under a predecessor's governance. Empirical studies on the turnover of city secretaries between 2001 and 2012 in China strongly support our hypotheses. Consequently, this study improves our understanding of how corporate donations initiate social exchanges between firms and politicians.

Abstract:Donation issue in emerging economy has been a research focus in the field of corporate social responsibility.When a firm faces up with a natural disaster,society will have a strong expectation for the firm to donate.However,the existing literature ignores the comparison between Chinese and foreign firms' donation behavior when they have different external environmental understanding in this background.Based on context of Wenchuan Earthquake,we study the donation amount,donation density,and reaction speed to this earthquake on account of internal strategic resource and external social expectation.The conclusions lies that,due to different home country's culture and behavior recognition,Chinese firms donate more money and have bigger donation density and faster reaction speed to the expectation than foreign peers.This conclusion is contrary to general intuition that foreign firms should more actively take part into CSR activities considering that they earn more money.Moreover,there is different motivation for these two kinds of firms to donate.Internal strategic resource elasticity drives foreign firms to donate more and react faster than Chinese firms,and external public opinion will push Chinese firms do more than their peers.Therefore,this study enriches the understanding to Chinese and foreign firms' implementation of corporate social responsibility in China.
Diversity of returnee executives’ foreign experience and corporate social responsibility performance

Abstract:Top managers’ past experiences (e.g., foreign experience) significantly impact their decision-making behavior, which may influence firms’ sustainable development. The available literature, focusing on the role of the increase in the number of top executives with foreign experience in corporate social responsibility (CSR), yields mixed results. In order to clarify the ambiguous relationship between executive foreign experience and CSR, we empirically examine the effect of the geographic diversity of top executives’ foreign experience on CSR. Based on a hand-collected dataset of the top management team’s (TMT’s) foreign experience, we demonstrate the positive impact of the geographic diversity of returnee executives’ foreign experience on firms’ CSR using Chinese A-share listed firms from 2009 to 2018. Moreover, this impact is stronger in firms with political connections with the central government and in regions with good market development. Furthermore, the mechanism analysis shows that returnee executives drive firms’ CSR by promoting corporate donations and green innovation. This paper offers clear policy implications by suggesting that hiring returnees with a broad geographic scope of foreign experience as corporate executives is an efficient way to enhance firms’ CSR.

Abstract:We develop a theoretical framework---competition-commitment-compliance---to capture the motivation of philanthropic donation in the transitional economy of China, where there is a lack of mature institutional infrastructure concerning corporate social responsibilities. We argue that firms donate not only out of marketing purpose, but also out of managerial commitment or compliance to external pressures. Political connections of executives either serve as a source of commitment to social welfare or as a buffer against external claims. We test our framework with a panel data of Chinese published listed firms from 2001 to 2006. The results generally support our argument that philanthropic donation in China was driven by threefold motivation. More importantly, we found the different function of two types of political connections (pre-position government connections versus post-position political status) for state firms and private firms.

Abstract:This study examines how privately owned firms that are listed on Chinese stock exchanges and often surrounded by Buddhist or Taoist temples use money to bind themselves to officials who can mitigate their underinvestment problems. Philanthropic giving is a traditional way of achieving this task. Based on social-exchange theory, we consider the potential for indirect reciprocity, in which visiting officials do favours for local businesses that do favours for other social actors. We analyse whether China's Buddhist and Taoist cultures influence how philanthropic giving induces visiting officials to do favors. We also examine temple locations and the behaviours of privately owned firms listed on Chinese stock exchanges from 2001 to 2012 in an empirical study that provides strong support for our arguments. Results show that philanthropic giving initiates and amplifies indirect reciprocity between visiting officials and local businesses, thereby increasing corporate investment. The magnitudes of these effects depend on the magnitude of religious norms. Our study thus illuminates the influence of visiting officials on corporate investment.

Abstract:This study offers a theoretical model of how and when investment in employee development affects employee entrepreneurship. Drawing from the creativity theory of knowledge spillover entrepreneurship, we examined whether employee creativity mediates the relationship between investment in employee development and employee entrepreneurship. We also examined the moderating effects of the institutional environment for entrepreneurship and the corporate entrepreneurial environment on this mediated relationship. Two time-lagged studies were con-ducted in China to test our hypotheses. Study 1 involved 219 full-time employees from five high-technology companies, and the results showed that investment in employee development was positively associated with employee entrepreneurship through employee creativity. Study 2 replicated this mediation finding with 289 full-time employees from organizations in a variety of industries. The results also showed the moderated mediation effects of investment in employee development on employee entrepreneurship via employee creativity, which was contingent on the institutional environment for entrepreneurship and the corporate entrepreneurial environ-ment. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these results for investment in employee development and employee entrepreneurship.
Overseas imprints reflected at home: returnee CEOs and corporate green innovation

Abstract:Drawing on imprinting theory and upper echelons theory, this study addresses how enterprises in emerging economies overcome low heterogeneity in ethical and causal cognitions through CEOs' cross-border mobility to accelerate corporate green innovation. Using longitudinal data from 1270 Chinese publicly listed industrial companies from 2009 to 2018, we find that returnee CEOs (CEOs with foreign experience) positively affect corporate green innovation. This correlation is stronger for CEOs with deeper imprints from their overseas experience (i.e., going abroad for work instead of study and staying abroad in countries with high environmental awareness) and for CEOs with high managerial discretion (i.e., those with CEO duality or in highly competitive industries). Our research sheds light on how executives reestablish their ethical and causal cognitions through overseas experiences and the conditions under which the reestablished cognitions are greatly reflected in firm strategic choices for green innovation in emerging countries.

Abstract:Using survey data for a sample of high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Zhongguancun Science Park in Beijing, we examine the impact of returnee CEOs on the innovation performance of SMEs. Based on both quantitative and qualitative analyses, we find that firms with returnee CEOs are not more innovative than firms without returnee CEOs. However, returnee CEOs do have a positive impact on firms' innovation performance when they work in publicly owned firms, when they have ties with government agencies, and when their tenure as CEOs is relatively long. The findings have important implications for governments in developing countries that aim to increase their countries' innovation capability through attracting returnees and also for returnee managers who want to contribute to the innovation performance of their firms.

Abstract:Emerging economies are burdened with multiple tasks related to economic development and environmental protection. Based on the phenomenon of "brain gain," we examine whether overseas-returned executives ("returnees") help emerging economies better cope with this multitasking. Drawing insights from a Chinese listed firm dataset for the period 2010–2020, this study provides significant observations regarding returnees' influence on firms' environmental performance. The findings show that hiring returnees makes firms greener for three main reasons. First, returnees enjoy favorable treatment provided by the worksite, and the mood of giving back makes them inclined toward low-pollution development. Second, returnees have more green skills. Third, returnees alleviate the principal–agent problem of firms in green development. There are also some extended findings from this study. As inferred from the firms' environmental performance, returnees' overseas study experience may be more important than pure overseas work experience. Additionally, firms that green up by hiring returnees are not biased by firm seniority. Finally, if returnees are viewed as a scarce resource, conditional talent wars will emerge among firms. These findings provide insight into how emerging economies can balance economic development with environmental protection.

Abstract:Although the notion of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been largely Western driven, it has now also entered the popular discourse in many non-Western countries. In dissimilar social settings, the driving force of CSR development differs between its Western origins and its non-Western adaptors. This study examines the developmental dynamics of CSR in China, and how such force have influenced the CSR discourse in this country. This Chinese experience helps illustrate how an exogenous path of CSR development evolved in China. With this experience, we maintain that the standards of CSR have instrumental value in promoting social quality through its function on enterprises, in regard to improvising social relations of the companies with their employees, the local communities, and the public agents of localities.
