Abstract:Abstract Biomass-based energy conversion and storage applications have proven to be the most effective technology for practical and sustainable applications. However, their further development was hindered by poor electrode performance. Naturally, abundant biomass is a green alternative carbon source with many desirable properties. This study presents a relatively easy approach for the synthesis of activated carbon-based electrode materials derived from natural biomass with an emphasis on supercapacitor applications. The selected biomass waste is Longan leaves. The precursor was converted into activated carbon through ZnCl 2 impregnation at three different concentrations in high-temperature pyrolysis. All activated carbon confirmed a good amorphous structure. Furthermore, oxidative compounds were also found to have an effect on their electrochemical properties. supercapacitor cells prepared in a two-electrode system exhibit high electro-capacitive properties with a specific capacitance of 169.83 F g −1 at a constant current density of 1.0 A g −1 in an aqueous electrolyte of 1 M H 2 SO 4 . Furthermore, the optimum energy density was found in LF0.5 samples as high as 19.04 Wh kg −1 at a maximum power density of 124.37 W kg −1 .

Abstract:The exploration of biocompatible energy storage media for future generations has been continuously carried out. This includes the investigations of electrode materials that are renewable, environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and rich in heteroatoms. The electrode materials undergo carbonization as a promising thermochemical process to create an active material with a porous structure of well-defined and controlled geometry. The main objective of this study is to thoroughly examine the conversion process of electrode materials derived from Mangifera Indica Seed Shells (MIS) using carbonization and activation methods for supercapacitor applications. Pyrolysis at various temperatures was carried out to determine the definitive influence of carbonization temperature on the capacitive performance of MIS active materials. The optimum carbonization temperature of 600°C significantly enhances mesoporosity, which is positively correlated to the specific surface area, hierarchical structure, and the presence of self-doping oxygen, leading to a substantial increase in capacitive behavior. In the experiment, the MIS samples were used as electrodes for supercapacitor cells, and they were found to exhibit a specific capacitance of 255 Fg −1 . The goal of this study is to offer a sustainable solution by using biomass as an active material for high-performance supercapacitor cells that can be utilized in energy storage applications.

Abstract:The investigation of renewable, cost-effective, and environmentally gracious electrode materials with high adsorption, fast ion/electron transport, and tunable surface chemistry is immediately desirable for the development of next-generation biocompatible energy-storage devices. In recent years, biomass-derived carbon electrode materials for energy storage have attracted significant attention because of their widespread availability, renewable nature, and low cost. More importantly, their inherent uniform and precise biological structures can be utilized as templates for fabricating electrode materials with controlled and well-defined geometries. The current review mainly spotlights on recent research progress towards biomass derived carbon electrode materials include plant, fruit, vegitable, animal waste, and microorganism based carbon electrode materials for supercapacitor applications. And over view of different synthesis methods for conversion and activation of biomass waste are discussed. Furthermore, summary and future research trends in this filed are projected.

Abstract:The delicate hierarchical structure of bio-waste is a cost-effective route to develop rational nanostructures for high-performance energy storage device. Bio-waste carbon materials receive extensive attention owing to their excellent physio-chemical properties and economic values. Herein, we demonstrate the facile route for the synthesis of porous carbon material from bio-waste without any physical/chemical activation and studied for supercapacitor application. The synthesized carbon materials exhibit a highest specific capacitance of 121 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 in three electrode system and 106 F g−1 in symmetric device at current density of 0.2 A g−1 with specific energy 11.84 Wh kg−1 and specific power of 361.8 W kg−1 with cyclic stability of 100% over 1000 cycles in device configuration. The effect of pyrolysis temperature with exclusion of the activation on the electrochemical performance is elaborated and hence the rational design of economic biomass-derived carbon material is studied for supercapacitor application.
Conversion of Biomass Waste into High Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes for Real-Time Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract:Sustainable conversion of biomass waste into an economic and high performance electrical energy storage device receives excellent scientific and technological interest. The high manufacturing cost and low energy density are the major obstacles for supercapacitor developers. To overcome these obstacles, the present study delineates the fabrication of higher energy density, faster charging, and excellent durable supercapacitor electrodes derived from industrial waste cotton used as a sustainable and economic carbon resource. The obtained supercapacitor electrode exhibits excellent volumetric capacitance of 87 F cm–3 at 1 A g–1, and it delivers higher volumetric energy density of 30.94 W h L–1 owing to the simultaneous achievement of high loading of active mass (9 mg cm–2) and maximum voltage window of 3.2 V. Besides, the supercapacitor electrodes showed an excellent durability up to 15000 charge–discharge cycles at 4 A g–1 even at higher voltage of 3.2 V. It can be ascribed that a large electrolyte ion accessible surface area (1893 m2 g–1) with an interconnected porous network of activated carbon fibers can enhance the rapid electrolyte ion transport even at high current load. Very interestingly, good capacitance retention at high current with high voltage clearly demonstrates the presence of the optimum pore size of the carbon electrode which can match with the electrolyte ion size for rapid capacitive response. Furthermore, integration of a solar powered supercapacitor as a self-powering energy harvest and energy storage device is designed, and it powers the commercial solar lantern. This work provides a simple and feasible synthetic strategy of converting sustainable biomass waste into economic and high performance supercapacitor electrodes for real-time supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:This study explores the potential of utilizing pistachio waste, which is low-cost and eco-friendly, as a precursor for the synthesis of activated carbon for supercapacitor applications. Pistachio shells, a common agricultural waste product, were subjected to a controlled pyrolysis process followed by activation to produce activated carbon materials. The resulting activated carbon was characterized by using various analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrochemical testing. The electrochemical performance of the pistachio waste-derived activated carbon was evaluated through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. The pistachio waste-derived activated carbon exhibits excellent capacitive behaviour, with a high specific capacitance and good cycling stability. The use of agricultural waste-derived activated carbon not only addresses environmental concerns but also contributes to the development of green energy storage solutions.

Abstract:Cost-effective and sustainable high-performance supercapacitor material was successfully prepared from cellulosic waste (Sapindus trifoliatus nut shells) biomass-derived activated carbon (CBAC) by physical activation method. The CBAC displays nanofiber morphology, high specific surface area (786 m2/g), large pore volume (0.212 cm3 g−1) which are evaluated using FESEM, BET and possessed excellent electrochemical behavior analyzed through various electrochemical methods. Moreover, the assembled symmetric CBAC//CBAC device exhibits high specific capacitance of 240.8 F g−1 with current density of 0.2 A g−1 and it is maintained to 65.6 F g−1 at high current density of 2.0 A g−1. In addition, the symmetric device delivers an excellent specific energy maximum of over 30 Wh kg−1 at 400 W kg−1 of specific power and excellent cycling stability in long term over 5000 cycles. The operation of the device was tested by light-emitting diode. Hence, CBAC-based materials pave way for developing large-scale, low-cost materials for energy storage device applications.

Abstract:This study addresses the prevalent use of chemically synthesized carbon nanomaterials in commercial supercapacitors, accounting for over 80% of deployments, marked by costliness and reliance on non-renewable resources. In response, biowaste is explored as a prospective source of sustainable carbon. The research focuses on converting biomass waste into an economically viable, high-performance electrical energy storage system. Renewable and environmentally benign biomass feedstock is prioritized for cost-effective and sustainable supercapacitor electrode design. A cost-effective three-dimensional (3D) porous honeycomb carbon is synthesized from bamboo shells via carbonization and activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH). The resulting activated carbon exhibits significant porosity and a high specific surface area, validated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Morphological studies using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) showcase the 3D honeycomb structure. Structural analyses through Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further affirm the material's characteristics. The carbonized bamboo shell-derived electrode demonstrated an outstanding specific capacitance of 310 and 135 F/g at 1 A/g in a three-electrode and two-electrode systems respectively. Remarkably, even after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 2 A/g in a 2 M KOH aqueous electrolyte solution, the electrode exhibited remarkable capacitance retention at 78%. The fabricated symmetric cell demonstrates high values of an energy density of 10.8 Wh/kg and a power density of 720 W/kg at 1 A/g. Utilizing the developed electrode, a symmetric supercapacitor device is successfully demonstrated by illuminating ten red light-emitting diodes (LEDs), showcasing its practical utility in energy storage applications.

Abstract:In the present study, biomass-based carbon was prepared by simple heat treatment from biowaste of the Nerium oleander flower. The scanning electron microscopy image depicts the porous-structure of biomass-derived carbon. The prepared bio-mass carbon delivers a surface area of 420.42 m 2 /g with mesoporous nature. The prepared material has been inspected as an active electrode for both lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) and lithium-ion battery (LIB). In LIC, the as-prepared carbon displays outstanding electrochemical performance with a capacitance of 300.28 F/g at 0.1 A/g. The capacitance is maintained at 84.1% after 8000 cycles of charge/discharge at a current density of 3 A g −1 showing excellent cycle stability. Transitioning to LIB, the NO anode showed a remarkable capacitance of 705 mAh/g at 0.1 C rate, and it continued to shine with enhanced cyclic stability over 1000 cycles. This study not only introduces exciting possibilities for the future development of metal-ion capacitors and battery electrode materials but also contributes to the advancement of sustainable biomass energy. This research embodies the commitment to nature-inspired innovation.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>The production of activated carbon using biochar exclusively for energy and environmental applications is attracting attention. In this review, an outline of the recent trends towards biomass-derived inclusive specific lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose-derived electrodes is explained in a holistic manner. Distinctive lab-scale approaches for manufacturing biochar, including carbonisation, and the role of activation agents and conditions are also considered. In particular, various modification procedures and their influence on the electrochemical performance of super capacitor-based applications are described, as well as its suitability towards multiple environment applications. Feedstock with diverse compositions, carbonisation and activation procedures have considerable domination on the properties of produced biochar. Activated biochar is pristine, environment friendly and cost-effective with advanced potential in many fields. Furthermore, a wide range of available renewable precursors and investigations on adaptability and sustainability are briefly discussed in the present manuscript.

Abstract:Restricted by the poor volumetric performance, biomass-based supercapacitors are challenging to meet the rapid development of miniaturization and portability of energy storage devices, and the Faraday active nitrogendoping strategy proves to be an efficient approach to address this concern. This study successfully synthesizes functional carbon materials with significant Faraday activity through a straightforward and environmentally friendly co-pyrolysis method. Mango branches served as the primary raw material, NH4B5O8 center dot 4H2O acted as a template, and NH4Cl and NH4B5O8 center dot 4H2O were utilized as the multiple nitrogen-enriched agents. A surface micro-NH3 environment can be achieved by modulating the addition of NH4Cl, and the decomposed NH3 is adsorbed on the biomass surface by the electrostatic adsorption of NH4B5O8 center dot 4H2O. MA1.5N1.5-T700 showcases a compact self-supported structure with micro/mesopores, boasting a substantial nitrogen content of 2.95 %. It achieves a notable volumetric capacitance of 320 F/cm3 (368 F/g) at 0.5 A/g and maintains an exceptional rate performance of 72.9 % at 20 A/g. The constructed symmetrical supercapacitor also reveals an ultra-high energy density of 13.01 Wh/L (14.95 Wh/kg) and an impressive capacitance retention of 94.03 % undergoing 10,000 cycles. This study offers theoretical insights into fabricating electrode materials for high volumetric energy density supercapacitors through the pyrolysis of forestry waste.
Development of high-performance supercapacitor electrode derived from sugar industry spent wash waste

Abstract:This study aims at developing supercapacitor materials from sugar and distillery industry wastes, thereby mediating waste disposal problem through reuse. In a two-step process, biomethanated spent wash (BMSW) was acid treated to produce solid waste sludge and waste water with significantly reduced total organic carbon (TOC) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) content. Further, waste sludge was directly calcined in presence of activating agent ZnCl2 in inert atmosphere resulting in high surface area (730-900m2g-1) carbon of unique hexagonal morphology. Present technique resulted in achieving two-faceted target of liquid-solid waste remediation and production of high-performance carbon material. The resulted high surface area carbon was tested in both three and two electrode systems. Electrochemical tests viz. cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge and impedance measurement were carried out in aqueous KOH electrolyte yielding specific capacitance as high as 120Fg-1, whereas all solid supercapacitor devised using PVA/H3PO4 polyelectrolyte showed stable capacitance of 105Fg-1 at 0.2Ag-1. The presence of transition metal particles and hetero-atoms on carbon surface were confirmed by XPS, EDX and TEM analysis which enhanced the conductivity and imparted pseudocapacitance to some extent into the working electrode. The present study successfully demonstrated production of high-performance electrode material from dirtiest wastewater making process green, sustainable and economically viable.

Abstract:Biochar produced from the thermochemical conversion of biomass, provides a green and sustainable platform for the preparation of various functional carbon materials (porous carbon, heteroatom doped biochar, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon quantum dots, etc.) towards advanced application. Their preparation involves the physical as well as chemical activation of biochar or directly from the biomass. The inherent versatile physicochemical properties of these versatile materials have been explored for the construction of the electrochemical energy storage devices like supercapacitors. In the present review, the various methodologies for the preparation of various biomass-derived carbon materials are summarized. Further utilization of these materials in supercapacitor electrodes and the properties associated with their charge storage ability, along with associated challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract:The world is rapidly moving toward growth and energy has been a noteworthy aspect of achieving growth. Rapid growth has also led to the over-exploitation of the environment to meet energy demands. Natural resources such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas are rapidly depleting to fulfill energy demands. Using natural resources has also increased pollution, and, consequently, detrimental climate change is knocking at our door. Many countries are trying to follow the Paris agreement to control the Earth's rising temperature. One of the ways to achieve this is to utilize renewable resources for energy generation and storage. In this context, biomass waste is a sustainable resource for producing energy storage materials. The intangible outcomes of doing so are effectively recycling the waste and reducing pollution, which is the consequence of the uncontrolled burning of biomass waste. In this review, wide-ranging scrutiny has been done to showcase biomass-derived carbon materials as suitable electrode materials for supercapacitors, fuel for catalytic activity in fuel cells, anode materials for batteries, and excellent supporting material for shape stabilizing the phase change material for thermal heat storage applications.

Abstract:This comprehensive review addresses the need for sustainable and efficient energy storage technologies against escalating global energy demand and environmental concerns. It explores the innovative utilization of waste materials from oil refineries and coal processing industries as precursors for carbon-based electrodes in next-generation energy storage systems, including batteries and supercapacitors. These waste-derived carbon materials, such as semi-coke, coal gasification fine ash, coal tar pitch, petroleum coke, and petroleum vacuum residue, offer a promising alternative to conventional electrode materials. They present an optimal balance of high carbon content and enhanced electrochemical properties while promoting environmental sustainability through effectively repurposing waste materials from coal and hydrocarbon industries. This review systematically examines recent advancements in fabricating and applying waste-derived carbon-based electrodes. It delves into the methodologies for converting industrial by-products into high-quality carbon electrodes, with a particular emphasis on carbonization and activation processes tailored to enhance the electrochemical performance of the derived materials. Key findings indicate that while higher carbonization temperatures may impede the development of a porous structure, using KOH as an activating agent has proven effective in developing mesoporous structures conducive to ion transport and storage. Moreover, incorporating heteroatom doping (with elements such as sulfur, potassium, and nitrogen) has shown promise in enhancing surface interactions and facilitating the diffusion process through increased availability of active sites, thereby demonstrating the potential for improved storage capabilities. The electrochemical performance of these waste-derived carbon materials is evaluated across various configurations and electrolytes. Challenges and future directions are identified, highlighting the need for a deeper understanding of the microstructural characteristics that influence electrochemical performance and advocating for interdisciplinary research to achieve precise control over material properties. This review contributes to advancing electrode material technology and promotes environmental sustainability by repurposing industrial waste into valuable resources for energy storage. It underscores the potential of waste-derived carbon materials in sustainably meeting global energy storage demands.

Abstract:Applications, economic advantage, and effective waste management have sparked much interest in porous carbon compounds synthesized from renewable and biowaste resources. Self-heteroatom-doped carbon compounds have recently been made using various biological precursors. This study investigates the ease of preparing biomass-derived porous carbon (BPC) matrices from raw and verdant Mikania micrantha leaves using a direct activation and pyrolysis procedure. With the aid of preactivation and pyrolysis, BPC materials can be synthesized with a high surface area of 850.62 m2 g−1 and total pore volume of 0.85 cm3 g−1. Raman spectra reveal the successful creation of pores and enhanced structural disorder following carbonization account by achieving higher intensity ratio of the D band to the G band (ID/IG) of 0.97. At a current density of 1 A/g, the BPC materials MM-700 exhibit a specific capacitance of 393 F/g. Interestingly, the MM-700 BPC materials have a greater capacitive contribution to charge accumulation during the electrochemical reactions. The BPC material MM-700 solid-state device manufactured with a PVA-H2SO4 gel electrolyte has a specific capacitance of 119 F/g at 1 A/g current density and a power density of 13.284 kW/kg at 30 A/g current density. Even at a high current density of 30 A/g, the synthesized porous carbon materials retain a high specific capacitance. Abstract:The rising energy demand and fossil-fuel use, along with growing environmental pollution, need the creation and development of innovative, ecologically friendly, and renewable high-performance energy storage systems. The key requirements of sustainable translation of biomass waste into a cost-effective and high-performance supercapacitor have become a primary concern to overcome the existing pitfalls. The current work outlines the large-scale synthesis of greater energy density, quicker charging, and superior long-term supercapacitor electrodes using banana peel as a heteroatom-doped carbon (H-PC) precursor that is both sustainable and economical. Dried banana peel carbonized at 800 °C for 2 h under the argon atmosphere was homogeneously mixed 20 wt% of MoS2 by the dry-impregnation method. Few layers of MoS2-decorated H-PC (MoS2@H-PC) composite owning micro/mesoporous structure, and satisfactory surface area (210 m2 g−1) was fabricated as the active electrode material to examine the electrochemical properties. MoS2@H-PC exhibited significant faradaic reactions and electrostatic adsorption due to the presence of numerous electrochemical active sites leading to a profound specific capacitance of 408 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Exploiting the unique heterostructure and the synergy of nitrogen atoms, MoS2, and carbon layers, MoS2@H-PC reveals impressive cyclic stability with 90% capacitance retention beyond 10,000 cycles. This study paves the path for the future development of high energy density and robust supercapacitors from various agricultural waste products and landfills.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Energy storage devices capable of delivering high energy and power are crucial in fulfilling the ever-increasing energy demands. Supercapacitors (SCs) are electrochemical energy storage devices for next-generation applications, exhibiting high energy and power output with ultra-long cycle life. Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are extensively used for the realization of many green energy storage solutions owing to their low cost, abundance, and sustainable characteristics. This study explored an inherently doped hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) derived from an aromatic root, vetiver for SC application. HPC with innately doped iron oxide nanoparticles and heteroatoms (nitrogen and oxygen) was prepared using a facile chemical activation method. The influence of pyrolysis temperature on HPC's morphology, pore structure, and energy storage characteristics was investigated. HPC prepared at 800 °C (HPC-800 °C) demonstrated a tubular morphology with a large specific surface area of 1879 m 2 g −1 and a total pore volume of 0.91 cm 3 g −1 . The tubular morphology in combination with inherent functionalities in HPC augments the transport of ions and electrons within the carbonaceous matrix. Reaping these benefits, the as-fabricated symmetric SC using HPC-800 °C electrodes exhibited a maximum energy density of 67.8 W h kg −1 and power density of 15,000 W kg −1 with ~ 88% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. This study opens a scope for developing green supercapacitors for next-generation energy storage systems.

Abstract:In this study, the fruit of Terminalia chebula, commonly known as chebulic myrobalan, is used as the precursor for carbon for its application in supercapacitors. The Terminalia chebula biomass-derived sponge-like porous carbon (TC-SPC) is synthesized using a facile and economical method of pyrolysis. TC-SPC thus obtained is subjected to XRD, FESEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, ATR-FTIR, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses for their structural and chemical composition. The examination revealed that TC-SPC has a crystalline nature and a mesoporous and microporous structure accompanied by a disordered carbon framework that is doped with heteroatoms such as nitrogen and sulfur. Electrochemical studies are performed on TC-SPC using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. TC-SPC contributed a maximum specific capacitance of 145 F g-1 obtained at 1 A g-1. The cyclic stability of TC-SPC is significant with 10,000 cycles, maintaining the capacitance retention value of 96%. The results demonstrated that by turning the fruit of Terminalia chebula into an opulent product, a supercapacitor, TC-SPC generated from biomass has proven to be a potential candidate for energy storage application.
